I've listened to many interviews with Ronnie and I would have nominated him for the Official Historian and Spokesman of Heavy Metal. This interview is too much with Ronnie explaining Heavy Metal to Joan, who has no clue about heavy music. But, you have to give her a lot of credit for being so open, welcoming and non-judgemental about Ronnie. She is genuinely tickled to death to have him on the show. She is really enjoying learning about something she seems to have absolutely no knowledge of from the master teacher. What a trippy interview. Is this a TV station, cable, or what? Like being interviewed by your Aunt Joan. Tell us about your nice musical group Ronnie.. She really would have enjoyed Dio and the Prophets.. And those boots.. and that weird set.. Love it!
Right, Ronnie was in many bands in the 1960's and early 1970's playing all over Upstate NY,even before when Ronnie and his Cousin David ((Rock)) Feinstein started The Electric Elves then shortinning the name to just ELF and released there debut album in 1972. Just wanted to add to the other comments about how genuinely heartwarming this interview is for so many reasons. My first question, which I didn't see anyone ask below - was HOW did he end up on this show in 1994? Like others here I enjoyed the interviewer so much, and she got such wonderful responses from Ronnie simply by being genuinely interested, engaged, and NOT following the tired, cliched scripts of music journalism that I had to look her up. Well, heck folks: Joan Quinn was apparently a force of nature herself and a fixture on L.A. cable for decades, with an interview show that focused largely on the 'fine arts' (about the only other "superstar" person besides Dio I could find, on some quick superficial research into her RUclips - is Cheech Marin). She was especially keyed into visual art, and apparently worked for Andy Warhol (Interview magazine) at one point. If you are into painting at all you will probably recognize a few names among the many people she interviewed; if you don't think you are, maybe give some random ones a try and you might find your horizons expanding. Back to Dio: I would still like to know how ended up as a guest on this show, because it seems kind of random (maybe we should write to Wendy?) but I would like to think that this ebullient Joan Quinn recognized true artists no matter what medium they worked in, and so she and Ronnie just naturally clicked and fell into a rhythm right away.
She's asking all the right questions, and he's giving very good answers. She seems completely ignorant on the subject (and not afraid to hide it), which is actually a good thing, which is why her questions are so good. Nothing worse than interviewers who try to prove that they know something. She doesn't have that pride, and it's for the better. She's a great interviewer. We all doubt our faith, that is why it is called faith. When our faith gets tested we need to be accountable for our own decisions to believe or not.
