We played Persona 4 Golden for weeks on PS Vita, so even though we’ve only got a few hours under our belt for this Persona 4 Golden PC review, we’re confident in recommending it. The mix of social school sim and JRPG battling is brilliantly done and while Persona 4 on PC is not the most advanced of ports (it was based on a PS Vita game) it’s been awesome to rediscover it.
As you can see from this Persona 4 Golden PC gameplay, it’s a very straight delivery of the game - with some rough textures distracting from those gorgeous character portraits. But it wasn’t enough to derail our Persona 4 PC review. One blast of the Junes theme tune and we were back in love. And best of it; you can get Persona 4 on Steam… now. Imagine how fun that would have been if Persona 4 steam hadn’t leaked earlier. Oh well!
It’s only a short Persona 4 Golden PC review - we break down the port, and explain why, with the sexier Persona 5 on shop shelves, it’s still worth a visit to Inaba. If you have any questions about our Persona 4 Golden PC test, pop them in the comments and we will get it answered. Thanks for watching.

Fastest $20 I've ever spent.
I just found out that this version even existed thanks to this video. Instant buy and no regrets.
Same. It was like "its out" and my money was like "Im out"

Yeah mistake .... You should have spent 25$ and gotten the soundtrack it's the catchiest OST in gaming history
@@neoshenlong Same. I should have kept an extra $30 to afford the Deluxe Edition.
Yeah but let's be real half the people buying this will be people who are already fans.
Hopefully the review explained it to both groups.
Most likely new P5 fans are least interested in this.
@@Anacone I watched the animation a couple years back so I'm imagining some people are buying it because of that.
No I will go in without much knowledge
I am a huge fan of P5 and have had no way of playing the old games... until now. Loving it so far!
Please ATLUS - Remaster all Shin Megami Tensei games (Main line and spin-offs like Persona). The PC platform is the best platform for keeping their legacy alive - Consoles come and go, but PC is forever.
And throw in some Etrian Odyssey, too.
Man, I would love HD remaster of Nocturne or the Raidou Kuzunoha games
I second this!
Except when you can't run stuff because it's not compatible with new windows.
But yeah i would love to play other shin megami tensei games, like persona 3 fes, nocturne or raidou kuzunoha games
Digital Devil Saga and mainline SMT baby.
You know someone is going to make an HD mod for this anyways
Hopefully!
I cannot WAIT to see the ridiculous mods people come up with.
wow.... I didn't even think about that....
A mod that makes time not pass lol

Can we get that for real life? Not right now, with COVID, but I don't wanna get old before I maxed my Social Links.

same goes for resident evil 4 remaster
Yeah, the high frame rate was actually really jarring.

I’m actually really satisfied with the price. I was super impressed to see $23CAD and I respect that in a way I wouldn’t have if it was $35+
Reminds me of the Yakuza ports. Also generously priced.
A little off topic but I think the reason the Persona 3 and 5 dancing games didn’t sell well is because the main line games have dropped down to $20 and the dancing games are still $60 each. I bring this up because ATLUS has been concerned about the sales of porting the main games. If the dancing games were $30 each with full pack being like $70 I think it would have sold waaaay better.
@hama mudo The dancing games are ok, the music selection is kinda varying in P3 it's pretty good and the remix are worthy of dancing while the P5 only one Joker and One Futaba songs are like danceable while the others are meh. If they waited after P5 Scramble then I think they would have a good selection to play from for P5.
@hama mudo I was going to comment this. I think it may be cultural with japan's idol scene being strong. they conflate something popular in their culture not being popular here with the idea that other regions disinterest. It's the dancing that turns people off not the personas!!!
I didn't realise this had just been unveiled... just accidentally bought it about 5 minutes after launch. Wow.
It feels just like yesterday when I played it in summer 2009, 11 years ago. I feel very old suddenly.

Persona 5 is phenomenal and is the better "game" of the 2 BUT Persona 4 has way more heart and is something you will remember forever.
Being in front of newer technology does that to you sometimes
Something that I always find funny when I read the Persona games and Monster Hunter fandom is that they always try to compare each entry when each entry imo feels very different from one another, and very different styles and feelings to them.
So conparing them although they are in the same genre for me would be like comparing The first 3 halo games and reach, they are all amazing games that are similar but at the same time so different from one another, they all bring different strengths so comparing them or choosing a favorite would be near impossible for me, persona and monster hunter games feel the same, many have strengths and weaknesses but imo comparing them is kind of pointless
Lol, I feel exactly the same as you do in terms Persona 4's writing, setting, and overall charm. I prefer Persona 4 Golden over Persona 5 because of this, even though I believe that Persona 5 is the overall better game with all its improvements and cool features. Hell, I feel that Persona 4 Golden is my favorite game of all time. Good to see more people getting the opportunity to play it on Steam....
From this series I only played P5 and both PQ games until now but while I love P5 I can see its weaknesses in the story.
@@sofaris576 I do believe that Persona 5's story is fantastic, I just prefer Persona 4's story and setting. Persona 4 was more focused, engaging, and I just liked most of the characters more...
I agree completely. I really didn't like the social links in Persona 5 as well. They felt really bland and they didn't add anything to the story. Even though P4G is bloody light-hearted, it had (at times) this really dark atmosphere which made the story more compelling.
I replayed p4g more than 10 times. I didn't finished p5 second playthrough.

we were in the same boat! Cheers for the port, friend, our dream came true ;3
I've beaten P4 Vanilla, but not Golden. Should I buy?
Yes. Golden adds a bunch of event and a new dungeon too.
It's worth replaying imo.
Golden is the cannon, you have to play it.
@david cruz Also Marie's Social Link and a whole new epilogue.
I think the new content that Golden has sucks. Marie is a horrible character who is a forced love-interest. Also, there are all these new fan-service events which don't fit the story in my opinion. However, its still a great experience especially if you loved the original.
@@user-yi5mt2df5q well... i don't have any problem with Marie. She isn't the best character in the game, but she's not the worse too.

I'm gonna miss that weird feeling of playing a "Vita only" game, but at least it's cool that a company is bringing their old games back to life every once in a while

EVERY DAY'S GREAT AT YOUR JUNES!
I bought this as it’s a great upgrade from the Ps2 release I own
Can this game be beaten without using a walkthrough?
Doing research into getting this game for PC after I finish persona 5 royal (which on turn was my first JRPG thats not kingdom hearts and also my first persona game)
This is my first Persona game and I have a feeling I'm going to get PS5 immediately after finishing it. The music alone is worth the price of admission.
Killer soundtrack.
I liked the story and characters of this more than 5. 5 was still cool though
My favorite game of all time. Bought it on steam as soon as i saw it for sale.
1:50 I'll take good story and interesting characters over graphics any day of the week
I'm a little burned out of jrpgs right now... do you think I should a wait a bit or play right away(I'm a p5 fan)
Depends, I would play it in a while personally especially since it’s an older game. But, this game is basically a must play for any persona fan. As persona 3/4 always had better characters and writing compared to 5. 5 is a lot more aesthetic than substance. If you prefer really deep combat stuff than wait a bit to play it. If you like persona for characters and writing go play it immediately.
Hey man, I don't have pc and ps vita, but i have ps3, what are the differences from golden to the normal version?
So like, Is Persona 3 next to be ported over on Steam?
I just bought this game no questions asked...
did they keep the audio quality lower like on the vita did
i might just presume so
Thanks for this very informative video! But I still can't make up my mind: considering the overall quality, would it be better to just buy the PS2 port for the PS3 (which is cheaper, but it's not Golden) or this PC version?
I like the Vita, and it's probably the best version, but It's not comfortable to play so many hours looking at a little screen with my neck bent out of shape. PS Vita TV is also ruled out. So, if I buy Persona 4 it would either have to be on PS3 or PC.
No, buy this. I personally like the Vita version most - being able to put console on standby is handy during very long cutscenes (you can't do that on PC). But if the Vita version gives you problems, PC is the way to go. It's the cleanest image of any version. If anything, it's *too* clean, showing off those rough parts mentioned in video. I didn't want this review to put people off PC version. It's an incredible game everyone should play. I hope it didn't come off more negative than intended!
@@rockpapershot Rough textures is somewhat annoying to me and it did put me off a bit, but I can deal with it given it's not that expensive and it's not a remake (maybe it's almost a remaster? I mean, a little bit better than a port?).
In favor of the PS3 version, there's the comfort of a console. However, the PS3 doesn't have trophies, from what I learned, and it's definitely not clean at all. On the other hand, the PC version supports a controller and, as you said, it's the cleanest version. And it's Golden. I made up my mind. Thank you for your help!
Does it have a dub?
You can play in English and Japanese.
@@rockpapershot NICEEEEEU

I'd love a proper remaster of Persona 3 combining all additions to the later versions. Basically the PSP port, but add back in the cut scenes they snipped out.
After playing p5 and p4 I want to play p3, should I wait for a possible pc release?
Lucky you
Already got the platinum trophy for P4G on the Vita. Day 1 buy on PC. Hopefully this game’s success sees P3 and P5R releases on PC (or Switch).

Japanese audio option is new, and there's Steam Achievements. But outside of that, no new content.
@@rockpapershot still worth revisiting. Japanese audio reruns always fun
My problem with this is my sound doesn't work and the game is broken on basic level. with no sound effects or music in general outside of the animated cutscenes, the game just feels dead.
I hope someone fixes it because I was genreally looking forward to this.
Have only played P5 and P5 Royal. It's a bit dated but I've heard so many good things about this game I might just pick it up soon!

I've been wanting to play a proper entry in the Persona series for some time now. I don't have a PS4 (nor do I want to pay the scalpers prices to pick up a PS2 and a copy of whichever one is on that system) and I didn't want to buy the system to play Persona 5. So, I snagged the Nintendo 3DS Persona Q2. It was...alright. I could tell that the source material was probably great, but, again...not gonna buy a system for one game. Anyways, as I was perusing Steam today, I discovered that this game FINALLY released on the PC. AND since it's a port of an already super old game, I could run it on my PC laptop with integrated graphics and not take it on the chin graphics or FPS wise. So...definitely going for it. I've heard several people say this is their favorite game of all time and I guess I'll find out. And, I also heard that the soundtrack was outstanding (as the one produced for Persona Q2 was great, IMHO), and to add it for $5 to the already dirt cheap price tag of $20 seemed like a no brainer. Hopefully I have the time to get through this one...
My first ever Platinum.
I hope they would start remaking all the previous Persona games with P5 graphics and mechanics improvements like what Capcom did to the RE series
This sucks, im 12 hours into my playtrough on vita, just After finishing kanjis castle. Should i still get it? I really want to play persona on pc
I still think it's a more natural fit for Vita - the ability to put console on standby to pause it is very handy - but it hopefully won't break the bank to get it on PC. It's £15 on Steam.

Its a shame Atlus does't want to shake of their rep of doing bad ports, but still, i hope they will also remaster the older Persona game we never got to play, heard so many good things about the over the years it does make one curious.
I wouldn't say it's a bad port. Just a straight port. With some really nice work being done with remasters and remakes these days, it's important to point it out when it's a simpler job.
@@rockpapershot could't agree more, but i can't but hope they put more effort in any future releases.
@@weertangel7231 it's their 2nd game ported to pc, I think they were hesitant to release it to PC because they are just begginers and didn't want to make a bad port of a game and disappoint fans. That being said, Atlus for the most part listens to criticism and betters itself overtime, so I'm sure they'll fix this issue in the coming days.
Weird that most of your critiques are about the graphics. I was actually pleasantly surprised at how good this looks despite it's age.
Not critiques, really - just flagging that this isn't a flashy remaster. As I say in the video, the style of the game lets it get away with quite a basic port. It's pretty timeless.
I want to play it so bad, but it doesn't stop crashing.
I have this on PS2, PS3 (PSN) and PS Vita. Do I dare get it on PC too? -_-
I just want to say the comparison to Pokemon always felt odd to me as SMT has been around far longer and the capture and Fuse mechanic has been there since Digital Devil Story Megami Tensei in 1987. It would seem to me that Dragon Quest took inspiration from these games and Pokemon in turn took inspiration from both.
People who know Persona, know about SMT and its relation to that. I was explaining the game to newcomers. I don't think SMT means anything to them. Pokémon is useful shorthand, nothing more!
@@rockpapershot No I get that. A lot of people don't realize how much of an impact this series has had on JRPGs and I think it's because the series has always sold lesser than other franchises. I am sure that has almost everything to do with the Mature content preventing it from even coming west for a decade. I am glad that the series keeps topping each other with each release. P4 then SMT IV then P5. Here's to hoping that SMT V Sells as well as P5 did. cheers.
@@HoudiniFontmeister I'm betting SMT V will sell really well since SMT IV Apocalypse's gameplay is godtier and if they improve on it even more so, oh boy I can't even imagine what will happen. SMT IV and SMT IV A were on handheld, which I believe limited sales, but now it's on a home console and can expect even more sells. Also, at the time Atlus wasn't well known but P5 has paved the way for Atlus moving forward and helped Garner the attention of the public marking Atlus on the map of game developers who's games are worth buying and playing. All these reasons are why I believe it's going to sell well, oh and Atlus makes more PS5 games and hardly makes any Switch games, I think a good amount of people who've wanted to play an Atlus game but couldn't due to not owning a PS5 will buy it just to have a taste of that Atlus goodness.
@@Bros_Before_Hee_ho_hos Well SMT IV outsold P4 and was their biggest seller til P5. The 3DS was a huge seller. I agree. The devs said when they began that they wanna combine the Gameplay battle mechanics of IV with the Charm of Nocturne. I think that means they want it to be a fully 3D world with the gameplay of 4. It is definitely something to be excited for. It is exciting to see the series finally getting the love it deserves. They need to Port SMT I, II, If, and KMT to the switch. in english. They have hinted at remaking Nocturne as well. It would be nice to remake IV for the switch as well since it is so low res and trapped on the 3DS. A HD switch port would be amazing.
