    Arizona is full of great motorcycle rides, but one of the best-kept secrets in the state is also one of the curviest, least traveled federal highways in the country: The Devil’s Highway. Featuring over 400 curves in 123 miles, US Route 191 (aka, the Coronado Trail Scenic Byway) is a thrilling ride for an experienced rider. This ride’s been on my bucket list for years, so I decided to couple it with a bucket list destination: Pie Town, New Mexico. You already know what we're eating today...PIE!

    Thank you so much for highlighting Arizona in a very fun video. I just wanted to share with you that I rode to Douglas Az and picked up US 191 spur that begins at the International Border and rode it north to the routes end at the International Border with Canada in Morgan MT and crossed into Saskatchewan at Monchy.

    I just did Devils Highway 4 weeks ago and was not that impressed. I’ve been wanting to do it for the last 40 year and finally did the loop in one day, Phx, Sanford, Eager, Payson and back home. 542 mile loop. The road is rough and torn up pretty bad. The run from Morenci to Hannigan Meadow is 2 hrs of under 25mph. After Hannigan Meadow the road gets really smooth and more high speed bends and corner. 30-40 min of 50-60mph is really nice. If you really want a nice road to take in AZ, take 89 into Prescott or 89a into Jerome. Much nicer roads.

    • @ridetofood

      I’ve ridden them all! Yup, the roads in terrible condition. Congrats on crossing it off your list 🤙

    I loved this ride many years ago (not so many tar-snakes??) and arrived at the Morenci mine after dark and in a thick fog (low cloud). Dipping into a series of sharp downhill turns in a cloud in the dark was more than my previous experience had prepared me for. Going NOBO in daylight looks way more promising.

      Niiiice! If I had any advice on that, I'd say be sure to do the second stint of it in the daylight. once you start to climb up out of western AZ and into the mountains of eastern AZ, the deer and other animals get a bit bigger and more frequent at night. That'll be a fun trip! :)

    US 191 is probably the greatest motorcycle road that nobody knows about. I think we saw 6 cars the entire ride....and a cow in the road....and some elk crossing the road. We rode SB to Morenci. When I was done, I was just exhausted from all the shifts. But it was totally worth it. I had a smile stuck on my face.

    OK, you must stop making good videos so I can stop binge watching. I was there Sept 2020 after leaving PHX, Prescott, Pinetop, then Pie Town. I was stuck in my tent for 2 days while it rained nonstop. When it slowed down the only good weather was Silver City NM so that where I went. I never did Devil's Highway. Now I wish I did. You have great content and very professionally done videos. Thank You.

    I live on 191 and could have given you an update before you rode. The recent chipseal is horrible and the amount of people that have crossed the line and ran me off the road I can't count. I ride daily here in eastern AZ.

    Wow ! Now that’s a ride . A very interesting route that I’m not familiar with. . From Phoenix I’ve gone to Globe then headed north on a beautiful road . I think it’s 60 which goes up to Snowflake area and I’ve gone into New Mexico from there . .
    Really enjoyed your ride .
    Enjoy Taos . I was there about five years ago. Beautiful area . May I suggest while in that area go visit Taos Ski area . You don’t actually have to go to the ski area it’s just a beautiful scenic drive towards it . You’ll be glad you did if you haven’t been there before.

      Highway 60 from globe is awesome! Goes through the Salt River Canyon. And that ride through Taos is beautiful as well. I go there a few times a year to see friends and family. :)

    A bit of history: US Hwy 666 ran from Gallup, NM through Cortez, CO to Dove Creek, UT where it ended. (I traveled it for years before the name change and since) US 666 was named as such because it was is a spur off of Route 66 now I-40 beging at Gallup. US Hwy 666 was renamed to US 491 due to some superstition (political correctness). US Hwy 191 has been designated that for as long as I can remember. US 666/491 intersect US 191 at Dove Creek where 491 ends.

    That look so nice and the road look like something that you don't drive at 65 or 70 mph, take your time driving it and good that you got the full pie so you eat a little than and have the other half for supper or breakfast, take care and ride safe lot of nut out on the road.

    Would you say this road was worse than the 3 twisted sisters in Texas…? Because every time I ride the twisted sisters, even as recent as June 2024, I swear I’ll never Ride it again, because the road conditions are so poor…

    • @ridetofood
      @ridetofood  17 дней назад

      its a different type of poor condition... I don't think the twisted sisters are bad lol, they're just paved with very coarse concrete. This is just filled with tar snakes and loose gravel. so yes, I'd say this is worse.

    AZ may not have Grizzlies but it does have black bears. These can get huge, 600 pounds. Use a bear-bag to put foods and anything that smells “sweet” like soaps/shampoo/deodorant that’s vanilla, oatmeal, etc. A bear bag is a bag you put that stuff into, and toss a line over a tree branch and suspend your stuff in a tree away from your immediate camp/sleep area. ZERO foods/flavored drinks in your tent, don’t even leave candy bar wrapper in your tent.

    • @ridetofood
      @ridetofood  2 года назад

      Yes. You are correct on all of these things. Thanks for leaving helpful tips for others :) Don't forget clothes you cooked your food in as well. NOTHING ever goes in the tent that has a scent! :)

    You did have pie at the original pie place in Pie Town. The original is called the Pie-O-Neer just 1/4 mile east of where you stopped. Which I think is a good thing. Every time I pass through Pie Town I stop for pie. Last year I stopped in and the pie was not very good, this year the pie was a little better but every time I stop they do not have apple pie. The Pie-O-Neer changed hands a few years ago and since then the pies have taken a step down in quality. Thanks for the video.
