For those who watched (and mostly agreed with) my original GT Critique series, did you ever want to share it with someone but didn’t want to link them to a three and a half hour video they probably wouldn’t watch? Well, here’s the solution! The closing statement from that series which summarises pretty much all of my main points. Enjoy!
(If you want an even shorter summary just tell them that GT7 is a really shit, baby-fied version of a Gran Turismo game)

I really struggle to get how hard can it be.
All they needed to do is release Gran Turismo 2 with GT7 graphics and driving model.
Like why do the lootboxes? Why try to ram in the microtransaction model? Why try to force in GT Sport type racing?
I feel like every 'improvement' in terms of the game loop, is actually a downgrade. Nothing in this game is better over the experience we've had with GT2. All sense of mystery and journey is lost and it's a perfect metaphor for current childhood.
You're handheld through everything, GT7 is the embodiment of helicopter parenting you through a safe experience, so I'm fully on board with calling it a babyfied version of GT.
Shame, was really looking forward to it when it released, and I will never forgive the /r/granturismo subreddit and all the other idiots that live behind hype curtain trying to defend it. Like how blind or daft do you have to be to not see this game for what it really is?

    • @o00nemesis00o
      @o00nemesis00o 11 месяцев назад +37

"show don't tell" is not just about visual media. It's not about visually seeing something, it's about experiencing the evidence of something rather than just being given information. "Jim told his family to run, while he kept the wolf at bay" is superior to "Jim is very brave".
But even then, the same criticism applies. The game should be letting you find out what these cars are like and then giving more information if you go looking for it. Instead, the game is trying to tie you to a chair and FORCE you to appreciate some really surface level car history.

I completely agree with your assessment of GT7. To me, it seems like it’s less about actual, hard-core racing and more about the pomp and circumstance of the ideal of racing. The focus is more elegance and preserving some kind of “racing heritage” than getting in there and race for the fun of it. There’s a whole lot of fluff layered over a platforms that tries to please everyone but ultimately pleases no one.
I love this series but it needs a 100% complete overhaul. It needs to be less “shiny” and more gritty. Less formal and more ‘in your face”. Less “spectacular” and more visceral. I’m thinking of the Grid series of racing games as as example of these descriptions. Regardless, I will still appreciate GT and always follow it but yeah, Polyphony Digital needs to re-create and re-work GT from the ground up. It’s not fun anymore.

    • @WardenOfTerra
      @WardenOfTerra 9 месяцев назад +2

There is no 'elegance' or 'racing heritage' in GT7. The racing also has no feeling of actual speed. If you've ever gone 200mph, then you'd realise just how fucking nerve-racking that actually is compared to GT7. There is no sense of danger or loss in GT7, and that genuinely sucks. I'd like to see a hardcore mode where you have to repair and replace vehicles. Everything feels far too smooth and 'nice'. It's a massive shame that GRID never properly took off, as the first game was genuinely amazing. Codemasters fucked it all up because they allowed players to be trolls online and didn't put the progression in the player's control. Now, if Codemasters were to make a game like GT, then we might have something to be excited about...

When you hit the end credits and see videos of Kaz throughout the making of the game, and contrast it with the car and motorsports enthusiast he used to be and the pretentious rich guy he is now, you understand why this game contrasts with the older ones so much. Maybe I didn’t word this right but I hope it makes sense. Just reading about Kaz since the original game and to now, he’s a different guy and we have a different game that’s targeting different people. It would be better if this game was never marketed as a post-gt sport return to series form. If we have GT 1-6 and GT Sport, (I’m ignoring the prologue and demo games) this is more like Gran Turismo Hors d’Oeuvres.

Kaz is such a brilliant game designer but he seems to only care about progress instead of doing what works and progressing from that. Imagine GT4 but with new cars, 4K Graphics, new tracks, new events, car customization, scapes and a slightly different progression system (maybe something incorporating the car collecting aspect while still keeping things open ended for players, the cafe can act as side quests or a method of getting money or cars if you can’t progress in the main game). And don’t forget Vision GT! It could be a side mode for those who don’t want to see them mixed in with regular real cars, it could be like the missions we have in GT7 but it could still be separated by car class (so the Bugatti VGT isn’t racing against the Copen VGT). But that’s just my imagination, we probably won’t get that game unless Kaz is literally babysat by Sony into making a masterpiece (which won’t happen).

It really feels to me like Polyphony wants to move away from the classic GT formula, but they needed to brand GT7 as a return to the old games, probably because they (and Sony) knew that doing that would sell more. As someone who liked the direction they tried to go with in GT Sport, I feel like it would have been better for both "classic gt" and "sport" fans if GT7 didn't try so hard to brand itself as something PD doesn't seem interested in doing.
I'd rather have a focused, well designed GT Sport 2 that captures a niche, than a half-assed attempt at recreating the classics that pleases no one (obviously a bit biased as someone that likes Sport, but you see the logic).

Thank you for saying GT7 is a total SNOOZEFEST. Yes it really is. Not to mention I've been robbed 3 times during roulette tickets from getting a Ferrari Invitation with 4 star tickets. I have not even got a single Porsche invitation nor even a Lamborghini invitation (the Lambo invitation only gives you a Veneno, and it's kinda pointless because you can drive the car in GT Sport but Invites are still dumb) The Invitations are so pointless and forgotten to an extent that getting monthly updates with new cars that are purchasable in the Brand Central anytime are more expensive than the Invite cars. They should just remove them immediately and permanently. The only 3 races from different tracks that I could grind for almost a million credits for 30 minutes/hour is getting tiring and repetitive too, same goes with trying to wait for 2 weeks to get either one or two million credits depending how fast you are after setting the fastest time on Lap Time Challenge in Sport Mode and target times will keep changing depending the amount of players attempting it and also setting it for world record, it's mental.
GT7 doesn't feel like a true Gran Turismo game anymore, it's just Gacha Turismo. Monthly updates with just 3-5 new cars won't save the game even with new extra menus. Even I agree the most people complain about are the lack of single player events in some tracks, I know it's understandable we can't get a new track every month honestly. I've already finished all License Tests and Circuit Experiences with Gold, and not interested to do Mission Challenges at all because some rewards aren't worth it.

I don't mind the lack of events for specific cars. I just want to drive them so I'm happy they are in the game. Not like I can just whip out my McLaren P1 or my '69 Mustang Boss any day of the week IRL, this is the next best thing and it does extremely well in that regard.
Is it perfect, far from it, as you expertly detailed here. However, is any game truly flawless? I'd say no, but what GT7 does get right is the love story for all car lovers. It shows the history, scanned to nearly imperceptible levels when comparing IRL models and in game models. The overall driving experience in GT7 is honestly miles ahead from where the series used to be, especially post major physics update, changed everything for the better in my opinion.
I just think we shouldn't downplay the tremendous amount of work that's been involved especially when its essentially a launch title for a new system that developers haven't fully realised its potential. Like you mentioned, with all the pitfalls, at the end of the day, STILL many of us would chose this as our favorite game. I'd say just enjoy what we have in the moment and learn other aspects of the game that you may have otherwise never touched. If you hate the story mode learn more about scapes or learn how to be competitive in Sport. If you dislike Sport than go drive your favorite cars around some of your favorite tracks in custom races or time trials. The beauty of GT7 is that it's massive and not many ppl have collected every vehicle or conquered every aspect of the game so truly its a game for the consumer, with however you decide to play.
I just think from your perspective these highlighted issues are YOUR unforgivables, and you're entitled to that opinion and shouldn't be castrated for your opinion. However, lets not forget that not many any other games or even racing games can beat the enjoyment level we receive from GT7 and at the end of the day isn't that how we should define a successful game? How enjoyable it is? I'd say largely yes... and GT7 at least for me is achieving this with flying colors.
I'd like to say bravo to PD and everyone involved. I'm happier with GT7 than if I would be without. I'm excited for how this game and future iterations continue to evolve.

My latest grievance with Gran Turismo 7 is the fact that out of any region the americans get way more exclusive content compared to any other region. Additionally some of that content seems to spit on the face of the rest of the player base. Since launch here is all the exclusive content that could be earned in GT7 and how you get it (I'm not including the Dior Mangusta since it can be bought by any player without some sort of pre-requisite):
Mazda RX-Vision GT3 Concept Stealth Model - Pre-Order bonus (available to everyone)
Toyota GR Yaris 'Nation Livery' - Purchase the 25th Anniversary Edition of Gran Turismo 7 (available to everyone)
Toyota Supra GT500 'Anti Social Social Club' - Code received when purchasing clothing (available to people who can actually get the clothes)
Mclaren F1 GTR 'Hagerty Driver's Club' - Code received with membership (America only)
Dallara SF19 'Red Bull' - Code received as part of Red Bull Capture Point (America only)
Red Bull X2019 '25th Anniversary' - Participate in the 25th Anniversary Event (available to everyone)
Porsche 917 K 'Hagerty Driver's Club' - Code received with membership (America only)
Porsche 959 'Dakar Rally' - Participate in the Porsche event (America Only)
Porsche 917 K '1970 Le Mans' - Participate in the Porsche event (America Only)
Porsche 911 RSR 'Pink Pig' - Participate in the Porsche event (America Only)
So if you're keeping track, American players of GT7 have the opportunity to get *two* versions of the Porsche 917 K a car that costs 18 million in-game. And they don't even need to win, just participate. How is that fair to the rest of us? I find it also ridiculous they get the cheap red bull promotion (a brand sold everywhere) whereas the only brand car the rest of us can get is the Anti Social Social Club Supra, which if you've tried to buy their clothes is not cheap. This is ridiculous.

If GT7 was released on PC, modders would instantly make a great campaign mode.
All the elements like, the cars, tracks, simulation, etc. are already there. The solution is so simple, and that makes this all the more frustrating. In Gran Turismo 4 we got a pace car, a car with a 16 liter engine, the first ever cars, the Model T, the Auto Union Streamline, and others I can’t recall now. Not a single one of these cars had a ‘purpose’ or events dedicated to having a chance to use them, but were a part of the unique charm and culture of these games.
And yet, twenty years later, here we are stripping a game of its identity as a GT game for the audacity to do that again. Now an ambulance is crossing the line into absurdity that can’t be tolerated.
I also wouldn’t mind some more events, but it’s not like the opportunity to drive historically relevant cars or quirky cars is useless in a game. It’s not useless because it doesn’t act as a cog in the linear progression of the ‘game’.

From The vision GT cars being a great addition imo but at the same time being a completely missed and underused opportunity to some cars just not even telling you the truth about their specs. When they dropped GT5 2.0 Christmas update it truly renewed my fate. I'm praying for GT7 2.0. Just like with the vision GT cars/ concepts cars I'd rather have them than not

Someone make a translation of this video in Japanese for Polyphony to watch, please
I still cannot swallow the fact that PD has fallen from making games like GT4 to the clownshow that is GT7. These were the people who had to sleep multiple nights in the studio to try and make a game back in the early days and now it has become the company that gives little to no shits about their game or the people that love the franchise, or even what the franchise is. GT7 has shown us in many ways that Kazunori has completely forgotten what GT is at the end of the day: a video game. He seems to be trying to make GT something bigger than what it actually is. He seems to be trying to make the franchise a so-called "car culture platform" with the emulation of prices, VGT program, etc, all while seemingly ignoring the fact that we are dealing with a video game, which in the process only insults the heritage that GT has left, and spits at the face of us fans. What a way to destroy the franchise for both competitive and casual players. If GT continues to be at this state from GT8 onwards, then I am afraid to say that the franchise as we all know and love, is dead.

Right now I’d be elated if they just fixed the bugs.
Some are silly. The little pilot lights on the 996 flicker. The ducktail on the 2.7 rs does nothing but is adjustable(!) on the 964.
Some are serious. Engine noise still cuts out every now and then.
Disastrous class. Steering freezes on the Stratos often, on the Shelby Mustang occasionally, on the Beetle with the engine swap often. Always on the same tracks in the same corners. It’s ridiculous. Check for yourself with cockpit view, which is also quite bad.
Misc. There’s nothing to do for cars like the Renault r8, the Ferrari p4, the Alfa Zagato, the F1 1500, the Toyo 86 special ed. And the list goes on.
Extra. The AI is rigged to prefer overpowered but unprepared cars over well prepared but underpowered cars. Online, everything is bopped or factory spec. So why do we have all those tuning facilities?
If they can’t or won’t fix that, what am I here for? Classics are the reason I’m here at all. I’m biased like that, sure. GT claims to be biased too. By practice, they’re not. Who wants a Tesla or Honda Fit? Or the upcoming ambulance no one’s ever heard of. Anybody?
