I wanna pin this comment ahead of the premiere & address some stuff about GT7 that I didn't really find a way to work into the video. First: No, Gran Turismo 7 is not bad. I'm not saying it's a trash game or unplayable or whatever people on Twitter are calling it this week. I just am personally not enjoying the game all that much. The driving mechanics are solid, it's a very pretty game, and I am of course glad to see a mainline title releasing after so long.... but the issues I outline in the video make the experience feel very hollow to me, as someone who loved the singleplayer aspects of GT1-6.
At the same time, the complete backseat Sport mode has taken is really disappointing to see after Polyphony carved out such an incredible foundation with Sport. It feels like they've overcorrected in response to the traditional, singleplayer crowd-- whose opinions are of course valid, but these two sides of the game could coexist much better than they currently do.
I also find the handling model to be a bit shit, with ridiculous snap oversteer in even the slowest, weakest RWD vehicles. This is admittedly a mixture of playing on controller & being used to Sport's more forgiving throttle.... but this is, once again, too far in another direction. I've played iRacing on a controller with less frustration than I've experienced here. It feels as if the entire game was built around GT3 cars on racing tires & everything else just.... doesn't grip. I am glad I didn't end up seeing it as important enough to address compared to this video's main points, because literally the day I finalized the video & sent it off for sponsor review, the 1.13 patch adjusted the handling. It is *not* fixed, the RX-8 still snap oversteers as if it doesn't have the torque of a lawnmower, but correcting oversteer is now.... possible, instead of a fool's errand.
Anyways, I'm excited to hear about how y'all are feeling about GT7. I know it's been a divisive game among fans-- though it seems nobody is without complaints here or there.
edit: comments about driving line & assists are pretty rude, and usually wrong. I do not have brake assist on, as some have insinuated. I had TCS on ONE because of how bad the snap oversteer was. Note that this video came out the same day as the patch where they reduced RWD oversteer. Because it was bad. As for the driving line: I have ADHD & I dissociate/zone out really easily. The driving line stops me from ruining a ~10 minute race by accidentally driving off the track or missing a braking zone. if I know a track really well, I don't need it, but I also have trouble memorizing track layouts due to that same disability.

1.13 definitely made the Circuit Experiences a LOT easier for me (as well as a generally better driving experience overall). Even as someone who managed to earn gold on the NA version of R-6 on GT3, there are a select few sectors that felt impossible to gold on a controller. GT7 made me realize I no longer like Catalunya after spending well over an hour on sector 3, lol
I've been getting away with flooring it out of certain corners that would've punished me for even giving 25% throttle in the past. It might not be as big a challenge as license tests of the past, but I'm no longer pulling my hair out over inconsistent driving mechanics

Is Ride 4 the final pure vehicle collector videogame then?
I've been playing it for like 2 weeks now and it's pure as fuck - You can buy whatever whenever, you can hate some type of sportbike or circuit and still be fine...
Here is some things I dislike about an otherwise great game:
      · The lack of European sportbikes between 1985 and 1999 (they skipped some GREAT Ducatis) plus the scarcity of Japanese ones (Suzuki has the most with THREE, Yamaha & Kawasaki have 2 each, Honda has ONE)
      · The complete lack of pre-sportbike (1985) fast bikes
      · The complete lack of TTF3 sportbikes (1980s/90s 400cc 4-cylinder sportbikes)
      · The complete lack of "supertwins" (midsize 2-cylinder sportbikes, very popular nowadays)
      · The amount of paid DLC (so many fantastic bikes locked behind real cash!)
      · How the adjustable difficulty works (only affects how the AI accelerates, not how it brakes or corners, which means the AI guys can be really fast around certain circuits even on a very low difficulty setting)
      · The simplicity of the endurance mode (1st motorbike game to have one so whatever, no multiclass racing!)
      · How non-dark the darkest of places are (you can run around on a racebike without lights at 3:00 no problem)
I hope Ride 5 keeps the core mechanics, readjusts the career mode (it's over 500 races long), expands on the endurance mode and has a better vehicle selection

Having it billed as a "return to form" and the classic Gran Turismo formula returning, I feel pretty betrayed by it to be honest.
Replacing the old formula with the cafe was one of the worst decisions in game design I've seen in a lot time. The cafe itself is actually quite a nice feature. It should've been an optional side thing where you had all menus unlocked from the get go, and as you collected cars naturally yourself, you began to fill in the menus.
Having the races be track based and not event based (Sunday cup with 3 races, Clubman Cup with 3, Turbo/NA etc) was also a terrible idea.
The way they've constructed the dealerships also feels like it's been intentionally restricted for no reason other than encourage FOMO. Why can't I go into the brand central and look at their legendary cars in the way you could in GT4? I loved seeing all the special cars that were in the game, and wondered how did you win them.
Speaking of which, something I've not really seen anyway talk about, but I absolutely hate the fact they showed you the prize car before you even started the race. One of the things I found most exciting in the old GT games was seeing what prize car was awaiting you once you won all the races in the event.
I simply cannot fathom the people defending this game who claim to have played the older GT games. GT7 is something that had the potential to be great if their first objective was to make a great game, but it wasn't. It's first objective was to make the game just good enough to get players to tolerate it while tweaking everything to encourage the purchase of microtransactions ever so slightly wherever possible at the expense of the enjoyment of the game.
Modern gaming has really left me feeling disillusioned with my lifelong hobby.

Thank you for so much for this comment! I've not played the game yet as I was going to just wait and see if they would patch in a proper "offline" mode down the track. That and I was still trying to get my hands on the ever elusive PS5 to begin with.
I'm not even going to bother now as I completely agree with the points you raised in your comment. Things like the prize car no longer being revealed as a surprise at the end, or that races are just categorised by track and not into events. They are such small things but it's what makes me treasure the Classic GT games.
I think with the direction the series has headed I'll just be content with having fun playing GT 6 on my PS3 and no longer dwelling on it. If I'm lucky enough to see a future return to form than that will be a bonus.

      Nail on the head.
They removed the freedom of player choice with cafe garbage. Collect these 3 cars you dont want. Do that again 20 times.
Imagine if they didnt waste their development time on this. The campaign could of actually had a decent amount of events and not feel like a rushed afterthought.
World circuits is an absolute uncoherent mess. Menu layout makes no sense at all.
Secret prize cars were a staple motivator in completing the game.
Now you have intentionally rigged daily roulettes with crap prizes. And sport mode filled with bop races.
Very sad that more than 50% of the cars is a race variant or some retarded ass vision concept thing.
Also i miss the 20 variants of the same cars. I want the s4 rx7 infini without the turbo. Not the s5 rx7 gtx savannah.
Alot of things that made GT unique have died over each release.

It feels…sterile. Too sterile to the point it feels hollow. I hate being forced to collect cars; I don’t care about that, I just want to build my own car, my own race car.
I hate how every race is a catch mission, rather than a grid start. It’s so annoying, because by the time I’m 2nd place, 1st had already finished 3 minutes ago.

Though I like a lot of the customisation for sure, the widebody, the upgrade parts, I also like the car selection. I think PD has this vision for GT to be this grand racing experience with the glamour and class that is portrayed on TV with F1 and Le Mans etc. It's really hard to explain what I mean, but the whole cafe thing, the jingle when winning a prize car, the midi classical-jazz remixes, getting Lewis Hamilton to play the opening theme. There's just this air of pretentiousness that I feel when playing this game. Older GT games just had this amazing playful vibe, they were absolutely full of charm and they seemed to have a rhythm to them. The menus, the music, the noises when selecting or deselecting, the art direction, they just had this amazing flow to them that hasn't been replicated since GT5. As said in the video, the game will be better in the future, but not many will stick around to witness it sadly. The first impression is very important for games. If a game doesn't convince you from the get go, then usually the majority of the player base drops the game and never touches it again, regardless of future updates that are supposed to improve the game.
I can kinda live with all the other "bad" things mentioned in the video, but not having the freedom based career mode like in the older games was definitely devastating to see. The linear menu book progression was the single worst thing a GT game has ever done in 25 years, and I really hope that GT8 goes back to the old career mode style. Honestly i was very excited when this Game came out, after the State of Play presentation i felt really hyped about this Game and what it could have been, i bought on Day 1 (Actually 2) for my PS4 (Yeah, i don't have a PS5 and for the moment that Console doesn't truly catch my attention), i putted the Disc, i was truly very happy to finally see a Gran Turismo Intro with Moon Over The Castle for the very first time worldwide and after i started playing the Game... It didn't feel right, the "Career Mode" felt kinda empty and extremely short compared to other GT Games (Even GT1 & GT Sport's GT League are even Longer than this attempt of GT Mode), i was just doing races and getting Cars, it took me less than a month to finish this crap, after that the only thing left to do was grinding and get cars, at first with the troublematic economy from versions 1.07 to 1.09 was really a pain in the ass to grind credits just to get the Car you want, also the lack of events make this problem even worse since now you have to grind and grind the same race over and over again just to get like 50k Credits per race, luckily 1.11 came and it pretty much improved the economy and with the addition of endurance events like the 30 Minute Circuit de la Sarthe Gr. 4 Event (Which is my favorite) that gives you 550k Cr or even 800k Cr if you do a clean race and now in 1.13 the 1 Hour Spa Francorchamps Gr. 3 Event that gives you 1M Cr really helped with the in-game economy, because of that i don't see the pay to win thing truly as the biggest problem anymore, now the true big issue is the pretty much Barebones State the Game is at the moment and the lack of stuff to do in the Game and the lack of race events for you to take advantage of your Garage, truly we URGENTLY need Gr. 1 and Gr. 2 Race Events since there are literally NOTHING at the moment, and also more races that involve Normal Cars that have Standing Grids, since at the moment we only have 2 of them that are from the Clubman Cup Plus Race Events, and i truly want to see more of them.

The real shame with modern gaming is that I don’t think the industry as a whole will ever be what our generation wants it to be based on the games we used to love growing up.
The entire industry is very different now and I see it all continuing in the same vain from here on.
On thing which made games great in years gone by is that companies couldn’t get away with releasing fluffed out or unfinished content like they can now.
In the past we got complete, well made, big free games that were entirely on disk because that was the best tech available and if companies wanted us to come back for the next one the whole game had to be spot on from its release.
I haven’t yet played GT7 but I adore the previousGT games 1-4 in particular and I’m a stickler for linear games (with enough agency to feel in control) that have proper hard progression systems.
I think what we’re (or at least I’m) finding is that games now are either too linear or far too open, lacking balance.
My particular gripe if I could narrow it to one point is the abundance of games in this generation which prioritise quantity over quality (I can’t really speak for gt7 as I haven’t played it yet) but your pints seem to make perfect sense.
For me the last 2/3 forza titles have been steps backwards, Dying light 2 for me is the worst offender of all (sorry for going off topic a little).
Dying light 2 is the complete embodiment of what’s wrong with games today: coma inducing story, massive and pretty but completely copy pasted and lifeless world/ map, rushed physics, buggy as hell, generic badly paced progression which promises agency but is ultimately linear and generic.

To me the big issue with GT7 is the prize-money-to-car-price ratio. I started the game on the licence tests and won a bunch of cars there, and have almost gone through the entire game with only purchasing a single car at a dealership, yet I never seem to actually be earning money, or at least I'm earning it at a very slow rate. I find myself spending equal-to and sometimes more money on tuning cars for particular events to meet requirements and be competitive than what the payouts offer, and this is even with me being sensible by just using the closest car to the PP target I have instead of wild 'dream builds', and again let me remind you that I've gone through the game with only purchasing a car with my own credits once.
It's just a constant grind, and I'm often having to repeat events twice just to be making a profit which gets boring. It's so obvious that they're trying to force players into spending money on microtransactions, and on top of that, the microtransactions are ludicrously expensive in proportion to the price of some of the most expensive cars in the game; the top most expensive cars in the game are worth almost an entire 9-hour's day wages for me, not that pay-2-win should be encouraged anyway. 9 hours of sweat, labour, and exhaustion is apparently worth the same as an imaginary car lmao. It's like their target audience is NFT bros with more money than sense.
It's funny and sad. I didn't even have high expectations of GT7 and was almost going to pass on buying it, but brought it under the impression that it was going back to it's roots. Unless Polyphony does a spectacular U-turn, I 100% won't be buying GT8, and I've owned every GT.

i agree with this. i loved being able to build up in my own way from nothing. didn't like how in gt6 you had to buy a honda fit at the start though at least you had freedom after that.
something else which i would say is a more personal problem, is actually something a lot of people have criticised gran turismo for over the years. if you look at the car list of gt7, there are 4 nissan skylines, that being 1 r32, r33 amd r34, as well as a 1970 skyline. gt6 has 10 r32s alone. each one has a similar body but slightly different stats. you get a lower end model, a facelift, a high end, a touring car even. and theres something about that which adds to the immersion of a used car dealership. maybe its just me but i like seeing lots of variants of the same model.
gran turismo has always been a celebration of the auto industry, as opposed to forza horizon which is a celebration of car culture (both are great in their own ways). and so seeing base models and facelifts is a part of that industry i'd like to be able to virtually experience? i dont know. i get that it was kind of filler for the numbers game of car lists but i liked it

Truth is, gaming has evolved in a lucrative business, like many entertainment businesses in history, this is nothing new. The graphics are not the problem, the gamers' demands are not the problem either, the real problem is that gaming went from a niche market for enthusiasts to a money machine. It blows my mind that some people actually think gamers can change the state of things. Yes, they might be able to with smaller developers, but triple A games are doomed to go down this path, because no matter how much a small portion of the players complains, the majority will always be buying it. Luckily Gran Turismo might actually have a chance since this portion is way bigger, but games like FIFA are doomed to stay money machines, hyped up before release, announcing features, and bla bla bla. I wouldn't say the gamers are to blame, it's just the business model that evolved and now prevails.

GT7 is the least happy I've been with a game in the greater part of a decade.
    - Old GT games had a lot of unique and interesting events with all sorts of requirements. Half of GT7 is copy pasted "WTC 700" or "WTC 800" events with no real use.
The game has Gr.2 and Gr.1 class cars and you can't use them in any sort of single player content. You spend the equivalent of 10 dollars on an in-game car that you can only use in Time Trials or custom races that aren't rewarding in the slightest. GT4 had all sorts of events where you'd use an extremely specific car you'd never use other wise to win something unique, like the Blue Mica Subaru 360 or the Nike 2022 or that one sport Silverado.
    - GT7 also has a godawful line up of cars, where you're forced to use the most famous cars in the world, with very few interesting "oddball" choices like the dozens of obscure kei cars in GT4 and GT5 and the lower end cars that you'd use a lot in GT1 and GT2. I've been playing racing games for my entire life, I'm kind of tired of driving Skylines.
    - The roulette system is a joke. A literal joke. I can almost hear Kaz laughing every time you land on the 5,000cr. That, or you get parts for a car you literally DO NOT OWN, CANNOT OWN, AND WILL PROBABLY NEVER OWN. I would really like for there to be a community crowdsourced effort to find the odds of getting anything other than the worst gift every single time. If GT7 was a person, GT7 would be one of the most punchable people I've ever met.
GT7 just feels like Sport again, with no real effort put into the single player content. I regret purchasing the game and I feel utterly insulted.
Welcome to the future of gaming, folks. It's only going to get worse from now on. The game isn't going to improve. It's going to remain the same soulless husk it launched as. I wasn't born yesterday.

Enjoying your review as usual. I just wanted to say that I’m sorry you have to deal with people saying things are clickbait or insisting you not talk about completely legitimate issues. I’ve been playing GT since 1998 (started with a Japanese import and the license tests were not easy when I couldn’t read the directions) and have since purchased 1-6, Sport and 7 as well as multiple GT branded wheels, but honestly my experience with Sony and PD on 7 was so negative that I stopped buying Sony products entirely for a bit.
GT7 was the first game from Sony I ever tried to return - and the first game of any kind I ever tried to return since the early to mid-90s. I know you made the choice to avoid getting mired in microtransaction discussions and I totally respect that, but between their handling of that, the always online requirement and refusual to let players refund the game (I talked to a lot of their people over the phone) over the changes, outages, etc. it just really made it hard to feel good about playing the game.
25 years was a long time to really like a series - I hope they can course correct and make me want to come back again one day. In the meantime, I can still enjoy your review.

if there's anything I noticed from the Gran Turismo series is that they rush a 1st game on a new Playstation console and fix and improve in the second,
example: GT1 and GT2 were both on the ps1, GT3 and GT4 were on the ps2, GT5 and GT6 were in the ps3 (correct me if GT6 was on ps4 or not)
and maybe GT7 could be improved on GT8 (if they're ever looking on making and sequel to GT7), the big thing I looked forward to in GT7 was different racing type's, when Kaz made the 1st game
he wanted to add different racing type's like Rally, Drag racing, even Derby and Banger racing but due to low storage he couldn't, in GT2 they had to rush the game and didn't have enough time to, and GT3 they abandoned that idea. I got really exited and nostalgic while playing the menu books but maybe just MAYBE they'll forget the menu book idea (in my opinion I hope they will).

but the "random" stuff you get are also exclusive parts you can't buy on the shop that gives you more hp / less weight etc, even for Gr3 cars for Sports. so even if 2 players build the same car buying every part from the tunning shop. if one player got lucky to get titanium / stage 5 / ultra parts, he will be in a unfair advantage.
also on the recent update they also added more engine swaps like the RB26 for the 180sx and BRZ FD engine for the Qs S13, yet locked on ticket system. there should've be a special shop exclusive for those parts that change daily at high price (for example 100k for a swap?) or something

Although not to worry, you can spend real money on GT coins.....It's so obviously been geared towards getting you to spend more that I find it extremely offensive and obnoxious, I would never have expected that approach from polyphony. It feels like the love for Motorsport has vanished while being replaced by a love for higher profit margins. The soul is definitely missing from GT7. As far as the cafe is concerned, they should have treat it like a literal cafe where you could take a car your passionate about and essentially attend a coffee and cars where you could meet other people in game with their car, speaking over the mic through a proximity based system. The fear of players quitting partway through is now influencing design deep into solo aspects of games.

I'm starting to feel like GT2, 3, and 4 could never be replicated again with how game develop is now. The technology obviously is there but no one either has or would devote the necessary resources to make masterful games like the classics. Also, the consumer base would buy anything now regardless of quality. Quite sad but atleast the past titles will always exist.

I don't like compact cars. It's a crazy idea that I'd be getting another Honda Fit like in GT6. Thankfully, there was the Mazda Demio among the three cars available, but I still hold that grudge. And about the penalty line system... I'm not going to cite it, it only makes me hurl by just thinking about it.

Odd when gaming companies release long extended demo.

This is the perfect example of @Act Man's "MoDeRn GaMiNg" meme....
