Dirt 5 Review, After The Dust Has Settled

- Опубликовано: 15 ноя 2020
- Dirt 5 is here, and there's been a fair amount of discussion about technical and performance problems. Two weeks later, and after two patches, Dirt 5 is much better than it was upon launch, and Kacey takes a deep dive into the game's campaign to find out if the game itself is as good as its predecessors. Game was provided by Codemasters but that did not influence any praise or criticism.

The motorstorm community seems to be loving dirt5 from what ive been seeing in one of the fb groups I'm in.
Well, i heard that some people of evolution studios worked in this game
@@AnotherFoxBoy
Yes, the whole Onrush team worked on this game I believe, so that is true
i'm not surprised
Should have called it DirtStorm
Motorstorm Dirt Edge
"But on a positive note, this is Codemasters we're talking about. They are generally very good at listening to fan feedback"
Now that they've been bought by noted evil publisher Take-Two, I don't know if that's gonna hold true going forward.
When it comes to fixing bugs and all, sure, but there’s no way in hell Take Two isn’t gonna make it monitised and all, also ads
Like making Dragon Rising not very mod friendly despite that being the appeal of operation flashpoint. (and not giving Dragon Rising a server browser.)
@@samz8691 Or the sequel to dragon rising...
@@netherwolf3012 Where we didn't even get the mission editior and they didn't even bother making a steam version when they ran out of Windows Live keys. (So you can't buy the PC version anymore.)
Which is a shame, Red River is admittingly very flawed but it's still enjoyable.
@@samz8691 It is a real shame. It was the closest to a milsim on consoles, and I could imagine it could be a real rival to ARMA if they kept working with it. Especially with the new generation console power.
FINALLY someone acknowledges server browsers. Without them matchmaking dies in weeks.
Could you explain?
@@zer0slayer1 A server browser is basically a list of game sessions that displays the number of players and game mode, so you can choose manually what game to join. Without that you depend exclusively on matchmaking, which most of the time isnt as efficient.
So players jump into multiplayer, try to join a game via matchmaking, and if it doesnt find any games, people will think its dead, which will snowball into your game actually dying in a matter of weeks. Hell, its what's been happening with the Avengers game as of lately.
@@agustinhoj6347 Thats a really good explaination. Reminds me of the Friday the 13th game actually
Honestly, I don't think the "problem" with this game has anything to do with it being "good" or not, or pretty, or having content... What I find trully mindboggling is how *nobody* points out the way it *feels* , how DiRT5 plays absolutely *nothing* like ....well, a DiRT game. It's made by the makers of DriveClub and OnRush, with the engine that powers these games, and it show. It plays well, yes, the physics engine is good (I mean, we're talking about guys with WRC and Motorstorm credentials, they know how to make offroad racing games), but it never feels like you're playing DiRT ; it feels like you're playing DriveClub on dirt, and it's not the same thing at all.
I partially noted it in my steam review I believe but might have only describe it as odd rather than putting it out there like that. Definitely a huge part of my disappointment, the fact it isn't very DiRT-y apart from game mode selection. I don't like the physics that much either, though half the cars are still fun to drive. Just not worth the money. Also, the mp has no (re)play value at all, playgrounds are OK but don't make me want to come back as much.
Thank you, it's the main thing that bugs me about DiRT 5. It wouldn't have sold if it weren't for the name.
@@m-seb Somewhat unrelated maybe, but what bugs me as well is the fact that there are only ~500-600 reviews of it as of now. I know that reviews are a small-ish portion of the player base but isn't that really small? We're talking DiRT, or has it gotten that unpopular?
Edit: I am inclined to give DiRT 4 a try, despite skipping it initially because of procedurally generated tracks. Unrelated to Kacey's review.
That's very much my issue. It doesn't feel like a Dirt game, which isn't what I wanted to experience. The content itself isn't the problem, it's how it's been iterated.
Along with the handling, the damage and collisions are the biggest downgrade. Can't even wreck your car as far as I can tell. Still no Cat and Mouse modes... AGAIN.
To be honest the same was said about dirt 3 and dirt showdown.
This is what the reviews are for. Dirt 5 is just something else.
In my opinion it is still a less terrible than marketing for project cars 3. Which is also suffering because of the name.
Have a nice time gaming!
Finally, the only proper review I've seen of Dirt 5. I genuinely thought I was the only one who enjoyed the wide range of physics depending on the car/track/weather, and coming from Motorstorm I felt it almost immediately.
For your first review copy of a game, given by the publisher, this just shows HOW BIG and revelant you are in the racing games content on youtube. You're the best on the nich, surelly. Keep up the good job, because i'd have no doubts that you have the best channel to review racing games. Cheers
You actually can play Path Finder on Arcade Mode. You just have to select Time Trails.
Ah, cheers. Glad to hear. Can you use other vehicles?
No, still only Rock Bouncer available.
Great to see someone with a fair review of DIRT 5. I've always wanted a dedicated arcade off-road racing game as FH4's off-road content wasn't cutting it for me. It honestly hurts to see not a lot of people into it.
The art of big budget niche racing games is becoming a lost art I feel.
The fact Dirt 3 has more active player base than Dirt 5 kinda says it all really.
2:05 - THIS! A hundred times this!
I can get the criticisms on the technical faults, but the gameplay/style/content? From the very first marketing material, we knew this game was going to be an over-the-top arcade off-road racing.
Same went for Project Cars 3... People just need to complain about something I guess.
@@yoshikempenaers8621 actually no. PCARS3 is the 3rd game in the line of games claiming to be simulators, which is not only a shitty game in it's own right, but was not marketed as an arcade racer.
@@benfennell6842 It was marketed as such from it's very announcement onwards! Don't stick your head in the ground man...
@@yoshikempenaers8621 Project cars 3 is different I think. Dirt 5 I don't believe deserves the complaint because people can always go to dirt rally. I loved dirt 3 but hated the gymkhana game mode so dirt rally was perfect for me. Project Cars on the other hand did not give us a split title and just change the game direction entirely and call it arcade...and it obviously back fried on them. If slightlymad made project cars: Motorsport or somethin then they wouldn't have that problem. thats my view on that game.
A Dirt game with no Rally or Rallycross mode ;(
I pre-ordered the game. played for about an hour and then got a refund. the lack of rally/trailblazer stages (why have so many rally cars yet no rally mode?!!?) and the simplicity of the handling (even compared to Dirt 2 & 3) just annoyed me too much. it's a good game, but I'd rather get it on sale in a few months than pay 80$ now.
I played the game a few days before release and had no problems getting a couple races in though. even at 1am on a Thursday night/Fri morning
100% agree with your comments on Dirt 4. it was trying to appeal to two very different audiences and that was never going to work. I love the game too though.
i might have to check this out man. when you noted the detail of the water getting melted at the beginning of the race is badass. I wanna check it out for that reason, i had fun with dirt 3 and i played a good amount of dirt rally too
4player split screen! Is what is gonna keep me coming back to this game!
I'm still really upset that they got rid of Rally as it was my favorite part of the DiRT series
they didnt
@@Filipe1020 That doesn't even make sense. DiRT Rally is a sim, DiRT is more arcade - different markets. I'm sure the demand for an arcadey rally game is still there, and they just ignored it.
They didn’t get rid of it
Pretty much the exact same thoughts I ended up having.
Appreciate that they finally settled what each series' identity should be, after the strange mishmash DIRT 4 ended up being. Also love how communicative the team is, just hope they follow through with the patches they've been teasing sooner rather than later. They're certainly doing a good job thus far.
Congrats on getting a review copy! Ever since I found your channel a while back, I’ve been hoping you’d start to get the attention you deserve
We need a motorstorm Pacific rift remaster
Or all three PS3 Motorstorm Games. Maybe Arctic Edge.
No we need new franchises, enough with the "we need a remaster of this game"
@@romus3550 We need both.
i like motorstorm apocalypse a whole lot too. but if i could only pick one to get remastered, pacific rift.
1 and 2 were sooooo good have to give the edge to PR because split screen !
it's funny that most of the fanbase seems to be completely uninterested in the sprint cars, cause those are exactly what made me interested in the new game lmao
Going into a more arcade based game is fine, they announced it well ahead of time. The problem is it's still a Dirt game and judged against even Dirt Showdown it's short on features such as not being able to use my G29 or DFGT with it, replays and celebrated modes like RALLY being replaced with a Sprint Car mode so weak that it makes Tony Stewart's Sprint Cars look AAA.
It really feels like that this was just a cash-in to have some sort of next-gen racing game for next-gen titles and that's all it feels like, the game performance and online servers were horrible on launch day and it has bugs reintroduced that other Codies games had patched out long ago like the mouse cursor not going away when using a controller. A track editor is...cute, but Trackmania exists. DualSense controls are...fine, but I already own a dedicated tool for racing games.
A lot like PCars 3 needed to be called something else, this should've just been called like Dirt Showdown 2 or OnRush: Now With Actual Racing, maybe.
I absolutely love your review of Motorstorm... I mean, Dirt 5!!!
I'm waiting to buy the game until Xmas but your review has certainly influenced that decision. I was never going to purchase it on release but I didn't how long I should wait for. Xmas seems reasonable enough so let's hope some of the issues get fixed by then.
Talking about Motorstorm, the main reason for Evolution Studios to die as because Drive Club's lobbies were a failure at release. Let's hope Dirt 5 doesn't see the same fate...
I recommended my friends your channel and I hope they can get more people to know you more.
Keep up the good work and do it at your own speed :D
Can you make a review of the xbox 360 version of forza horizon 2? I never see a real review about this version.
And great video.
I bought it and will be getting around to it
@@Kaceydotme YES! The version i always played
God. I loved that game. Until my xbox decided it was fun to lose and corrupt my save at level 700 and something. I
I got that game for free this summer because it was in a double pack with Marvel Ultimate Alliance. I was very surprised with how well that game aged
@@PerfectImperfection64 You're thinking of Forza Motorsport 2! The OP was referring to Horizon 2, a 360 port of an early Xbox One game.
Everyone have dirt 3 because it cost 70 cents lmao, I am waiting for next dirt rally doe
I really, really lived Dirt 2, presentation, songs, cars liveries. It just worked. Dirt1, Dirt3, Dirt4 seemed to me that they follow different dirrection far more serious and progression seemed not important in these games. I never git invested in them. So is Dirt 5 more like Dirt2 or Dirt4?
more like DiRT 3
None of them. Dirt 5 is bad.
certainly more leaning towards Dirt 2. I hugely recommend playing it yourself.
I feel like this is near perfect for me. I love dirt games but the rally series and 4 take effort to play. This allows me to play dirt more relaxed and chill
great review - how do the cars handle and feel compared to fh4? vibration etc
Extremely well done review. I have no idea how I ended up on this video but you've earned a sub. Time to go through and watch every video you've ever made!
Hi, I have little suggestion - it would be great if you add name of the game on the screen when you show pieces of footage from the other games. I'm not familiar at all with modern-ish racing games and that would be quite handy!
Why?
Hey, how did you get in touch with Codemasters? Twitter?
A friend that works for a different studio put a good word in BUT my backup plan was Keymailer, where the game was available for creators to request keys.
Great review, probaly gonna pick up this game sometime, since i really liked dirt 3
What game is that at 6:16? I don't recognise it, and I'm usually very good at that.
3:00 - Sonic Adventure OST.
Thank you
Be cool be wild be groovy!
Shoutout to the 27 people still playing Dirt Showdown online on steam
Good video has always Kacey, you sparked curiosity for the game maybe I'll try it.
And thanks for featuring me at the end of the video and taking the time to respond my question.
of course! thanks for the thought provoking question.
This is a fantastic review of Dirt 5. Well done. I feel it gives me a good idea of what to expect, where it's strengths and weaknesses are, and gives me a good idea of if I, personally, would enjoy it. Thank you.
This is probably the first Dirt game I have no intention to buy. I'm no virtual rally hardcore driver, so I have no interest in Dirt Rally. The Dirt series was my way to go to play a good rally game without the need of a racing wheel and the hands of Richard Burns or Sebastien Loeb. For me Dirt 4 was a great game and the end of an era. It has been great fun Dirt series, RIP.
Will you ever make a video on Tokyo Extreme Racer Zero?
Still waiting for Codemasters to remember they own Operation Flashpoint.
Finally someone came to mind to compare the game to Dirt 3 and Dirt 4. Thank You. Great review.
Does it support Impulse Triggers on Xbox controllers?
Got this game on my PS4, PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Have to say out of the 3, the PS5 played better just because of the DualSense Controller.
Just wish they would take the game back more to it's roots.
Main issue I have with the game is that the AI/ difficulty is all over the place depending on the event. I tend to race on medium difficulty and some races you can win by a country mile, while others the AI will come out of no where and vanish into the distance after shoving you into a wall.
this doesnt have enough views. you seem like the only reviewer who understands this game. 10/10 reviewer review
9pm would be me as I live in inida
Hi Kacey, great review. I do have a request, though. Could you cover Need for Speed Heat, like your thoughts on the game, also kind of how it pretty much got abandoned.
Don’t feel pressured or anything I just thought it would be cool.
I’ll get around to all the NFS Games with time
@@Kaceydotme I see, thanks for the reply btw.
It really bummed me out to see Heat get dropped like a bad habit. Was a really fun game, but I just ran out of things to do pretty quickly since I'm not into PVP racing.
When I need to know something about racing games I always come here. Kacey seems to be the only one that knows and enjoys racing games nowadays.
@Kacey Did you review small racing indie games? I made one and I'm curious what you think about it. Could I send you the Steam key?
Hit me up in the business email in my about section and I’ll take a look!
It's a decent game and I've had some fun. Some of the design decisions boggle my mind though. Why would you not have replays? Why has the damage model been almost completely removed. These were two of the key things that made the first couple of Dirt and Grid games so great, TOCA as well. Do I miss rally? Kind of but, there's the previous versions of Dirt I can go back to. However getting rid of fundamental features just confuses me and worries me about the companies future. Why not have a replay option? There's no downside. I can only assume it's because they cannot figure out how to implement it and keep the new graphical prowess in this latest iteration of their game engine. So their decision was for looks over function, that shouldn't exist in a racer.
What's the game at 6:16?
this game makes me really sad
i made friends im still friends with in dirt3 multiplayer and we were hoping to rekindle that, but the game in its current form is just not worth it
i personally refunded the game after i realized it has no wheel support despite codemasters saying it would, sneakily adding "after launch" at some point, but even if i looked past that the technical issues made it a really hard sell to my friends who dont buy as many games as i do.
id say ill revisit the gasme once wheel support is in, but i fear this botched launch has killed player population forever.
the problem with expectations is on dirt 4 though. if they would kept rally rally and the mainline series what it was instead of making 4 a weird mix people wouldnt have expected a rally game in 5.
Dirt 5 reminded me of Sega Rally Revo 2007 and that's not a bad thing
What's that server browser?
assuming you're referring to Dirt 3
Tbh i've just got it this week and i love it (oh and also i'm playing with a keyboard)
I respect the fact thst you waited for the patches. That should have been the correct way of doing this because folks down the line might still think the game has these issues.
Ahem, don’t mean to be rude, but at 2:10 . COD Infinite Warfare had sidequests lol.
Love the video though!
The Infinite Warfare campaign was sooooooo damn good. The backlash to that game's trailer was just stupid.
I wish they would make a new dirt showdown game.
The worst offense is the appaling handling physics..
There are dozens of superior racing games out there! This game has gone backwards and has some of the most mundane tracks I’ve ever raced on 😩 Incredibly disappointed
As a casual racing fan this game looks very fun to me
I love Dirt 5. I'm having a lot of fun playing it and going after the platinum (which, face it, is probably one of the easiest games to get a platinum on LOL). It looks, feels and sounds nice, has lots of variety, and hopefully, will only go up from here. It's not a hardcore sim for hardcore fans. It's a racing game for those who love racing and drifting and jumping and just having a damn good time. I personally think Pathfinder is a dope game mode, and hopefully they'll expand upon it in the future. A lot of hilarious stuff happens in this particular mode, and with the rest of the game as a whole. I really hate the sprint cars though lol...
Its on my Wishlist, so glad Dirt is back in true form.
I think the online component will get better after some time. I'm holding off until the PS5 releases on 19th so it still a few days off, as it is for many other people. Since it's an arcade racer, I think it will be more suited to Console gamers with a Controller rather than to a PC player who have higher expectations from a game.
Maybe it will take a while until it get's it'S first price cut on a christmas sale or whatever. Just don't give up on it yet. There is no "new" Need for Speed, Forza, Gran Turismo, Crew or whatever coming soonish so it's the las t arcade racer after Grid and Project Cars 3 to hit the market.
BTW Which one of the last 3 do find the best?
Great review
Why would I ever play Pathfinder cars in this when I have a perfectly good pathfinder level in Monster Garage on Xbox?
I bought the game on PS5 in a Black Friday sale, the bugs were still there when I played last week, trees floating in mid-air, and the game crashed so hard that I lost about 2 hours worth of progression. But still enjoying it. It's almost an arcadey game, which I surely miss in gaming.
But Codemasters deserve some leeway missing bugs, what with the global pandemic happening during development. Reviewers should have been more forgiving.
Shame the consoles versions are still experiencing issues. Seems to be widespread rn: both Valhalla and Cold War are experiencing pretty bad bugs
Yooooo Kacey read my question!
I still play DR 2.0. I hope to god they make a 3.0
Alright here we go
I had indeed not seen this one. I have watched pretty much everything before and after this one BUT this one until now
And
Well
I will get it now. Not one to do multiplayer, so its issues there are far from a bother for me so, yay
Thank you for a sweet video
2:12: And Black Ops 2, don’t forget that.
OK, I admit it was kinda funny hearing him banging his head regarding not having much luck with the Online Multiplayer, while seemingly ignoring the 4-Player Local Split Screen Multiplayer at the same time.
Guess I am one of the lucky ones.
none of my irl friends play racing games :(
Here's the thing with Dirt 3. The game was and still is great, it runs on a potato and its been on heavy sales since forever. I am not surprised that it still has players. (even if most are the classic breathe into the mic Russians)
Meanwhile Dirt 5 has issues running on average 2020 hardware and its 55$.
Personally I think Codies really needs to try and get their racing games working cross-platform. The simcade/arcade audience doesn't seem to be as strong as it was 10 years ago. Cross-platform would've helped GRID 2019 a ton and I believe it would've helped D5 as well.
Definitely agree that crossplay is the way forward, especially for niche games like off-road racers.
come to think of it, this might be the reason why DiRT 3 got removed from Steam's store - to try and direct more people into getting the newest version
@@purpleneons nah, it’s licensing. This has happened with most old Codemasters games. It also went on a steep discount (mightve even been free like grid 2) before it got delisted
It's a DiRT game, but they forgot the DiRT part.
I'll never understand why would someone play this over Dirt 2, the Trailblazer races alone in Dirt 2 worth more than the entire Dirt 5 game.
I played it about one hour, got a refund and felt the urge to play dirt 3 right away.
Dirt 5 is not a bad game, but it isn't a game that made me interested on what I played. The only thing that I really liked was the trackmania-like user created time trials. Maybe when the price lowers I buy it exclusively for this mode.
This review kind of makes me think of NFS Pro Street for some reason
i want rally stage in this game. idc about the physics really
I love the aesthetics of Dirt 5.
Why?
@@timmyolaleyeisback5128 because they're pretty. I like the bright colors of the loading and splash screens. I like how the cars look. The tracks are pretty, and the weather effects are really good.
What's the game at 6:17 and 6:24 ?
6:24 is Gran turismo3 the other im not sure.
@@Theottselmaster It's Sega GT on the Dreamcast. Weird that I couldn't figure it out since I love Sega GT2002 on the Xbox

"Codemasters are generally very good at listening to fan feedback"
1 Month Later, EA announces the acquisition of Codemasters.
Well, this will not age well...
They promise that they will have creative freedom, but that's how every studio bought by them start.
DAMN YOU EA!!!!!!
I'm not sure if Codemasters is going to stay the same, since Take2 is going to buy them
I would think they won't change much since T2 doesn't really push its various developers to follow any particular direction like most other massive publishers. but of course we'll see.
@@iansteelmatheson They're traded on the stock market, just you wait and see. Though you are right, they aren't the worst of the big publishers.
Great review has always but man wouldn't it be nice to the rival racers constantly taunt you while your racing, almost like how it was in midnight club or back in dirt 2
I honestly hate when AI quip like that during a race so I don’t miss it
@@Kaceydotme I see what you mean but it does give the races more life to them as it feels like you are racing against people and it gives these no name drivers some sense of a personality
I think adding DiRT 2 style mid-race banter would be great, but they should also give the player the option to turn it off if they so desire.
I loved Dirt 4 because it was a lighter hearted Rally game... I don't want over the top Arcade game
Right, but that’s what dirt has always been. Dirt 4 was the exception. Dirt 4 is my go-to in the series honestly, but it’s not what Dirt has always been about
I honestly feel this is the best they have released till now, excluding dirt 3 that is
I'm not seeing the great visuals talked about here. I've got everything maxed out at 1440p, but I've just thought "it looks fine. Nothing special" and can't even see the watery effect on racestart you mentioned here. Or anything changing with the mud banks based on weather.
Also, the performance ratings are misleading. For example on paper the 911 is better than the Carrera, but in races it's the opposite. Balance is also off in some categories
Unfortunately the new patch just destroyed the framerate on ps4...
@@comdrive3865 Its better now but the game is total shite.
I liked Dirt4’s driving mechanics, it was arcade but still had to be mastered. I love dirt rally but don’t play it because I don’t want to invest in a steering wheel and it’s impossible to play on a controller. I feel like Dirt5 is too Arcady and too easy compared to Dirt4
You confused me by showing clips from what I believe are multiple racing games. I wanted to see Dirt 5.
Should have been called Dirt Showdown 2
I strongly disagree with parts of this review. Grid reboot is NOT good game when talking about it's base and driving model. It is worse than RaceDriver Grid in every possible way and physics (collisions, driving and damage model) are the worst part of it. I've said that Grid 2019 has bad physics and weird feeling after I watched pre-release footage and playing game myself only confirmed my opinion. I've had same story with Dirt5. After playing it I have to say, it is NOT like previous Dirt titles. It is showdown pushed to its limit. Again, suspensions feel weird. Cars have their suspension fully "extended" while stationary, damping is just wrong, vehicles often lose contact with ground and shake like crazy but not in authentic, fun way. Just like they are not dealing with terrain at all. Lack of rally events is laughable. CMR Dirt and Racedriver:GRID are among my favourite games, I spend countless hours playing them on Xbox360 and replaying on PC. Dirt5 is just shallow but pretty attempt to get few more quick bucks, same as Grid2019.
If you enjoy Codemasters games, better look at BTCC game coming in 2022. This is made by touring car fans and ex-codemasters developers that launched Dirt, F1 and Grid series.
How many codemaster racing games do we need to buy until we realize that they don't support multiplayer for shit. I'll never buy a another's codemaster game at full price. Wait until its 20 bucks. Or better yet, wait until its on gamepass in 6 months.
To your point that some people are unhappy about the graphics.
I might be suffering from some form of blindness, but to me most PS4* and PS5* games don't look that much graphically superior to PS3* games. And, maybe it's just me being old school, but I cannot understand anybody complaining about graphics in this day and age. Like literally all new games these days look gorgeous to me. Is something wrong with me if I don't distinguish between the amount of polygons when they're in thousands?
Perhaps it's because I remember going from 320x240 and blocky models vaguely resembling humans to such things as "facial animation". I don't think I can be impressed anymore.
*using PS as a signifier of generations, but I really mean all the comparative platforms
What really puts me off about this game is how you’re racing on tracks that are as wide as a freeway. Even Dirt 3 took more ability to drive in. This takes zero.
I feel dirt 5 is a sequel to gravel not dirt
Review NFS HP remastered?
I want to. Don't have the money to buy the game right now but maybe when it goes on sale.
@@Kaceydotme yeah I am holding off as well. 40$ is way too high, don't see any new content.
@@zer0slayer1 they did add custom paint colors for all cars as well as all dlc included but yeah I didn’t get it till it was around 20$
Ugh Dirt 5 is such a mixed bag for me. I find the ice physics and sprint car racing infuriating. It seems like they included just enough depth to distract without being nuanced enough to reward practice. I greatly prefer Dirt Rally 2.0 for this reason (it even has better graphics lol).
Already platinum last week, desperately needs more content. Online multi-player is lame.
I'm a huge fan of both the mainline Dirt series and of Dirt Rally.
I absolutely hated Dirt 4.
Wild. I actually loved dirt 4
I enjoy the game
