I quite disagree with the lack of turn instructions being a problem, because I thought it wasn't annoying at all. Thanks to the high angle camera & simple low poly graphics with its distinctive colors, it's really easy to read the tracks and turns. The roads are wide with forgiving rounded turns, that it never feels that you have to be constantly focused with turning like most rally sims out there. I initially thought it's going to be an actual problem with the faster cars, but nope, it's as pleasant as before. Nevertheless, the absent of pacenotes is really weird for a rally game and it wouldn't hurt to add it, though I understand why it isn't there for the more minimalistic presentation.
There's another thing that's absent in the game: checkpoints. It's hard to see your current position during the race without it. It's like another basic feature we've seen in a rally game since forever that it's so bizarre to be omitted.
Also, the concept of historical rally event starting with the 60s era and progressing through the years, while interesting, is not something that hasn't been done before. Dirt Rally plays around with that concept too, especially considering that this game really feels like it was influenced by that game.

    • @ShOwOba
      @ShOwOba 4 года назад +17

I totally agree with the co-driver thing, but I feel like I wouldn't want checkpoints for the same reason I wouldn't want a co-driver. As someone who never liked Dirt Rally and rally games in general because of having all the directions hammered into my head all the time (like imagine the GPS from Forza Horizon kept telling you where to go during every race), art of rally is my first rally game and I enjoy it so much because of how calming it is, despite the roaring engine consuming my ears more than anything. It's just you, your car, the music, and the spectators as you drift or speed along the track with it's luxurious scenery and gorgeous artstyle.
Just my opinion but I stand by it; the game feels perfect the way it is.

The lack of pacenotes is a problem depending on how you drive. Personally seeing a turn is not enough for me to judge how tight it really feels

As long as I can switch it on and off, I'd agree. Personally, I like the way that the only thing guiding you is having your eyes on the road. It works surprisingly well! I don't really want things like a co-driver that people want a lot because I feel like I drive fine on my own and it's fun to just listen to the music, the engine, and the occasional fan cheering. I feel like that's what funselektor wanted and I'm glad it worked out the way it did.

I noticed that shit too, I'm 21 years old and I fucking hate social media with a passion (RUclips included but it's different enough) and replacing EXP for "Follower" is the dumbest shit I ever seen in a video game... Breaks the immersion for me cause I know that the fact that I will never get popular thought the internet and real life means. FH4 and The crew 2 is the worst offender of this, not really bad games (I prefer TC2 if you're wondering) but originally is lost in the process. I just wanna play my game without being reminded by shitty social media PLEASE.

I just had a stupid idea about the lack of co-driver:
Instead of actual said notes, have a distinctive noise/grunt for each separate concept (left, right, easy medium, hard, hairpin). It may sound like a Sims character is your codriver, but it could be usable across all languages...

    • @Audiojack_

Yesterday on the community post announcement for this video, I said that I hoped you would take a look at DiRT 5 when it came out, to which you responded that you probably wouldn't, for reasons that you would explain in this video.
Now that I've seen this video, I still think that DiRT 5 might interest you. It is treading a lot of new ground for the series, and doesn't even feature traditional rally. From what they have shown, it is going to focus on including a very large variety of events, ice racing, off-road oval, gymkhana, rallycross, rally raids, and even hill climbing up a quarry with massive jumps and steep angles.
Also, DiRT 5 is being developed by a bunch of the devs behind ONRUSH, who previously worked on Drive Club and Motorstorm, so there's a lot of talent behind it. Digital Foundry did an interview with one of the directors, and they talked about how incredibly optimized the game is.
The point I'm trying to make is that if you believe that the racing genre is stagnating, I think DiRT 5 will have at least a few events you've never seen in a racing game before, and might even enjoy.

There is actually another racing game with a focus on the past; Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed. It looks at the history of Porsche and how they evolved as a brand. I'm told it was actually inspired when researching Lamborghini history for NFS: High Stakes. "Lamborghini got started in Italy... as a tractor manufacturer." That line (not a direct quote, here) is what inspired NFS: Porsche Unleashed.

The game is designed to avoid the need for pacenotes. Between the birdseye camera angle, background music and wide, smooth stages, there is little need for pacenotes. They would also intrude on the more relaxed, minimalist atmosphere of the game. I found it strange at first, but I quickly learnt that the game is probably better suited without pacenotes. This is coming from someone with combined ~1k hours in different rally games.

The problem is that devs now know a formula that makes money, and they stick with it....without giving it any new twist or innovation to it. Most racing games now feels different enough to distinguish between them, but not different enough to make it feel unique. I hope the best for indie games like these so we can see more of it in the future.

There have been a bunch of vintage racing games
    · Spirit of Speed 1937 is one of the worst racing games of all time plus one of the best CONCEPTS for a racing game ever attempted (interwar racing was unique and spectacular, probably the best the motorsport has ever been in terms of being daredevils)
    · Mille Miglia was PS1 shovelware that wasted another bit of motorsports history
    · Golden Age of Racing was PS2 shovelware but once again it's a damn good concept
    · Grand Prix Legends was made by the guys that eventually made iRacing and it's still incredibly good
    · GT Legends (similar name, different developer) was also fantastic and made by the rFactor guys
    · Ducati 90th anniversary is just RIDE2 but with only the entire history of Ducati available
    · Indy 500 Evolution is a hidden gem but the difficulty is kinda low
    · A crapton of games offer classic cars and sometimes tracks too
I'm still waiting for a motocross/supercross/FMX game based in the golden age of the sport, the mid-late 1990s. Trophy girls, 2-stroke engines, awesome gear and no scrubs.

Art of rally is what SIMCADE should be like. About pace notes: top-down(ish) view make pace notes unnecessary since you see both entry and exit of corner. What is necessary however is mark of some kind that warns you about elevetion change. For me the most important part of Art of Rally is passion. You can see more love for motorsport and care for car scene in names, car roster, descriptions and locations than in most of AAA games that are trying to overwhelm you with "car culture" in every second. About ideas of recreating magic of touring car racing in this way: there are TONS of comments about this idea in Funselektor's discord server and youtube comments. And he reacted to some of them so I hope he thinks about it. If you are interested in stuff like that you could follow Patrik Marek. He is extremely talented modder who is learning Unreal Engine 4 while creating project focused around touring cars.
I would recomend you getting familiar with PC sim scene. Games like Assetto Corsa + Competizione (these games are totally different experience on consoles), AMS2, R3E, Rfactor 2, old titles like Race07, GT Legends, Richar Burns Rally or GTR2... Simracing is NOT that gatekeeping, unaccessible stuff. But I have to admit, I have way less fun driving in F1 games after spending some time with modded F1 cars for Assetto Corsa.

This looks like a lot of fun! After spending 20 or so hours trying to download mods for RBR and then the game breaking on me (sadly my internet isn't as great as it should be, and the mod I download-which is RSRBR-has 40 different installation files which requires to be installed chronologically I have to download), I would certainly like to try an arcade-esque experience that gives me the same feeling and passion of rally.
Also because I would want to try the Group S Supercars (that never went out due to regulation and events that happened in 1986), since I heard that this game has those. And it's cheap on Steam too, so this might be a fun experience I want!

Hearing about the cancelled Group S being included is a cherry on the top. I'd love for Dirt Rally to incorporate those and a few other missing legends.
Shame about the RBR modding experience. I'm really interested in getting it, but I think I'll only try to conquer it with a wheel. I want to feel the full, genuine sim itch again.

02:34 my gaming knowledge is also limited, but before buying them I knew that Dirt and Dirt 2.0 have 1960s rallying in them and not just a year and then rouguelike-generated tracks, different each playthrough. Playing in those fragile 1960s cars on the icy roads of Monte Carlo, and say taking a header through some wooden twigs for "barriers" and realising you would have died in real life does make for good gameplay in classic racing, which I have a lot of time for.
Art of Rally to me is a more casual racing experience with nice historical cars, but not realistic models of them with actual physics on the courses they raced back then, like you get in Dirt onwards.
It would be nice to just be told that these are generated tracks each time in the career mode, instead of having to piece it together last night from pausing on gameplay of the menus plus slight hints from reviewers.
OK, it's obviously not a "sim" and more of a very nice-looking casual or arcade racer. I have a whole section of those as a Steam directory and the sims in another, they're not the same kind of gameplay, but I like both. There is no cockpit view, like with all sims and it's controller only, which there are few sims nowadays that have controller support, i know because I don't want to invest in a wheel and pedals for racing fun on my PC, so I avoid those sims.
In cockpit view, you actually need pace notes even more, don't you because you cannot see what's ahead, like in AoR, hence the dev saying that.
In sims we expect to race actual circuits and not made up ones, no matter how pretty and with localisation. There are many reasons why it is not a sim, don't risk your credibility trying to sell people what something is not, espcially when the facts are not on your side, as the above 4 reasons prove, I think you barely mustered 2 on top of being wrong that this has not been done before.
I've definitely memorised famous tracks from doing so in the 1990s in F1 simulations, it's why I hate Monaco and love Monza for being so easy. You cannot base your conclusions on how you experience the world only, that's called being subjective and not being objective, you need to look at how other people experience things and find a consensus. Otherwise you're trying to say that your memory problems are something that everyone experiences in racing? I've never heard this theory before, it looks more like an excuse. I'm sorry, but maybe that works on your parents, but not out here in the real world.

personally, there's no need for voice-acting for a co-driver, for i think it would ruin the aesthetic of the driver-car-nature, or more like you have the control over the car than anyone else. but then, patchnote should be available, and frankly, won't mess up the experience that bad.

Hey Kacey, if you want to play some more games set in the past I'd recommend NFS Porsche Unleashed. it starts you out in the 1950s before moving on to modern day vehicles. And also Sega GT 2002 which has a Chronicle Mode.

ps if you really liked this so much, you should really try Dirt Rally 2.0. it just... *feels* really, really good to drive, even with a controller

Honestly, the only problem I have with the likes of Need For Speed is that they add too much junk gimmicks. Most racing games on pc have this issue as well. I just want to race and that's it. That's why I like the f1 series, dirt rally and assetto corsa. I would've liked Dirt 3 (and 4) more if they didn't forced rallyx and landrush so much down my throat.

i dont think this game needs co-driver. yes, it will be realistic, but it will not benefit the driving i think. With the camera angles in this game you see corners way before you need to take any action for them. In rally you need a co-driver, because you don't see very far. plus you can go through this game, not needing to be first or even on a podium position - you just drive and progress.

    • @CaroFDoom
      @CaroFDoom 4 года назад +3

I find the big arcade racing games these days just are not fun to control and/or often take control away from the player without much feedback as to why it happens or how to avoid it. The last four Need for Speed games are especially notorious offenders of this and even when each successive release is noticeably improving; they're still not great. Then there are some games that play just fine but have other features that can suck fun out of the experiences, like FH4's seasonal rewards can make a player feel like they're being forced to come back every week, or Dirt Rally 2.0's always online campaign combined with irritatingly inconsistent servers stopping you from playing your singleplayer career.

Just English voice work supplied with the game would serve the purpose just fine - and i'm saying that as a person who learned English as their third language. And having it be in a horrible Finnish accent would only be appropriate. There's only a handful of instructions, so you don't need to be fluent in the language, just have a minimal grasp of it. A sensible enhancement would be Steam Workshop integration where people can just upload a ZIP of wavefiles and you get a menu where you can select the installed voice pack. If you're lucky, you might get some REALLY funny navigators that way, like celebrity impersonators, vtubers and whatnot. But also a lot of Microsoft Sam TTS uploads - but who cares.

Hm, this game may now be on my radar instead of Hotshot Racing. Have to watch that review though, but you do allude to it being the inferior product. Or maybe I'll get both after consideration.
I feel similar about arcade racing games though, however whereas I used to love NFS etc. in the past my focus has gone towards the sim side of things. Even then, I enjoy a good arcade racer, but nothing got my attention in the past 10-ish years except for the Dirt games (2 & 3) that is, and none of them are old-school.
