    Gran Turismo is a landmark in the history of racing games, PlayStation and car culture in general. Over the last nearly thirty years, Kazunori Yamauchi's Polyphony Digital has continually pushed the medium further and further towards photorealism, and created uncompromising racing game experiences. But after all this time, is Gran Turismo's maiden voyage worth revisiting? In this retrospective review, I set out to see for myself.
    All game footage in this review is from my own gameplay, captured on real PS2 hardware. Most footage was captured through an XRGB Mini Framemeister upscaler.

    Gran Turismo 2 had major role for our family in the early 00's. My father used the in game used car model to search/as a reference point for his next family car at that time, and he finally bought a '95 Levin AE111 BZ-G after saw it the first time at the game 😂

    I grew up with the original Gran Turismo and 'till this day, i'm still a GT fan. So much so that i actually own every main GT title ever released including a rare GT2000 Demo for the PS2 and GT HD, imported from Japan of course. I was pretty young at the time and sucked at it but i had lots of fond memories of playing it with my older siblings and even my uncle's & Aunt. From buying a Toyota, fully modify it and race it in Sunday Cup just to win a Mazda Demio lol to racing my aunt in a C2 Corvette around Grand Valley East or maybe that time in GT4, where my brother took a Castrol Toms Supra and forced me to use a Daihatsu Midget 2 around Nurburgring but it's all in good fun. Despite all of the flaws GT games might have, I still think it's one of the biggest reasons why i became a car enthusiast and why i learned about a lot of cars existences that otherwise i wouldn't have known about.
    Sorry for the long comment but i'm happy to see another of your videos, a video that talks about my childhood.

      @G G I don't consider sport a proper GT game because it has no campaign, it's a PVP spinoff and no hate against it, it is probably a good game but I don't mind skipping it, I am sure all the PVP mechanics will be added to the GT7 online multiplayer

    • @user-wq1ng2up1w
      @user-wq1ng2up1w 3 года назад

      @G G @G G Fully agrree, Sport is super underrated, it's a baseline for GT7. The physics of the cars feel good, while it was never intended to be an offline game, it birthed something much bigger: the competitive online racing system. From battling in the Nations cup to representing your favorite car brand in the Manufacturers cup, the whole feeling is amazing. Not even to mention the events Polyphony put up, World Tours all over the world, regional championships that boil down to the Finals in Monaco with the best players battling it down. I hope all of this makes way in to GT7 with even more manufacturers and racing cars, a massive market for Gran Turismo. Anyone reading this and dislikes Sport, watch the Nations cup final race at the 2020 World Tour in Sydney. If GT7 becomes great, GT Sport has to be thanked for that.

    • @Gojira_uz
      @Gojira_uz 4 года назад +21

      I'm guessing that's because of the games tire model, where cars with thicker tires had more grip for the most part. The Viper has very thick tires, which obviously helps with grip in real life, but in GT1 the effect was over exaggerated

    I was introduced to Gran Turismo series early in the childhood when my elder brother owned ps2 along with some racing titles, including Gran Turismo 4. I remember absolutely loving the game, in fact, it was pretty much the only game I played on his console, with the exception of Burnout Dominator of course. After a decade, I managed to buy two Gran Turismo games with my own money: GT PSP version and Gran Turismo 3. Currently playing the latter :)`
    I have a special place in my heart for Gran Turismo series. The series had helped me when I struggled to make friends in school, and when I wasn't in a good mood. I have yet to play the latest GT games, looking forward to doing that!

    Games like this are the reason why I really hope the PS5 eventually offers PS1 emulation with advanced settings. While I would honestly just like an easy way to play these games on modern hardware (my PS3 is getting a bit... old at this point, lol), I would also like to do things like ratchet up the internal resolution and such, without doing it on bespoke emulation hardware or a PC. I know the warping and such means they don't exactly transition to higher resolutions well, but it's still something I think would be fun to play around with. Great video!

I would try my best to progress in GT mode while my dad would play the online events. i still remember one day my dad was playing the 4 hour Mazda roaster endurance race and 2 hours in he asked me to take over because he had to go do something and I ended up winning the race for him. then in 2014 we got GT6. I don't think I've made as many memories as i did on those two games. Then I finally got GT2 last Christmas.

    The idea of buying, tuning and upgrading a collection of increasingly high-end cars in a racing game was already years old when Gran Turismo came out. Street Rod had used basically the same formula back in 1990. In fact, when I played Gran Turismo for the first time I basically considered it to be a modernized update of Street Rod, albeit with organized circuit races in the then-modern day instead of illegal street races in the 1960s.

    Your comments about difficulty were spot on. This is going to sound weird, but, two years ago, I started playing Gran Turismo 2 on a Playstation emulator on my Blackberry Classic. It's surprisingly playable on the Qwerty keyboard. Coming from modern racing simulators, I really felt like it took longer to progress, and that the AI were merciless. Looooove GT1. I didn't get to grow up with it properly, but it came with a demo disc I had. It was basically arcade mode set in Clubman Stage Route 5, and you could only pick between a Corvette, an NSX and a racing version of a Subaru Impreza. Used to replay it all the time, and eventually I got into GT3 once I got a PS2. Definitely one of my favorite series of racing games!
    Side note: Am I crazy for preferring the way GT1 looks over GT2? The addition of reflections on the cars in GT2 was no doubt impressive from a technological standpoint, but I feel like it was just too advanced for that generation, and I think it makes the overall presentation look more dated than GT1.

    For some reason they changed the physics in GT1 in subsequent releases for the worse. NTSC-J original release has a handling almost equal to GT2. All of the cars seems to handle like if they were rear wheel and the true RWD cars are unusable without proper tuning. The licenses were also way more harder in NTSC and PAL due to time being less forgiving. Also i entirely disagree with Gran Turismo 1 rewarding clean driving. It actually punish you since AI is rubberbanded and to do fastest times is better to just sticking to the wall in a good angle to prevent breaking. NFS High Stakes by putting car damage and a reward at the end of the race for doing a clean race did this correctly.

    love the video, and I agree on pretty much everything. This is amazing game, although my least favourite from the main games in the series (apart from ps3 titles that i never owned, but I played to death every other one). It's funny how close they were to almost perfection, and my all time favourite game to this day is Gran Turismo 2. Overall it's amazing series, games are different enough to justify owning every one of them, and whem you know them well they seem so different. Probably the only one that I don't really like is the one for psp, and i'm not too crazy about GT Sport missing amazing original gt tracks.

    i think GT1 was a baseline for car games, and the next after that was GT4, GT2/GT3 was not ground breaking, just upgrade of the former, but GT4 was a good game on its own.

    I had similar issues later on in GT1, especially when it came to the stock car challenge. I basically bought the same NSX that kept beating me (type S?) and eventually i got it. if you can manage to deal with that event consistently, its a godlike moneymaker. Sadly I never completed the game due to playing on an emulator and not being able to make the game look more visible. Which made the Special Stage routes almost impossible to do for me.

    I have USA and Japan copies of the first GT game and I'm convinced the physics aren't the same. The JPN GT feels a bit more like GT2, IMO. Maybe I'm just insane but the grip, brake efficacy, and ease of getting the car airborne in sim mode seems way exaggerated in the USA version, leading to faster play but a lot of odd, fidgety driving dynamics.
    Between that and the music, I usually play the Japan version these days.

    • @strikerecho2592
      @strikerecho2592 2 года назад +1

      I feel the developers made these changes to the US market as at the time they felt that they’d be bored with a completely grounded racing sim.

    • @sebastianaliandkulche

    • @sebastianaliandkulche
      @sebastianaliandkulche 25 дней назад

      @@strikerecho2592 Its funny since the USA version still "tries" to be a simulator. The handling isnt arcadey like NFS. But they didnt knew how to find a good balance. The RWD cars are pretty much undrivable and the USA handling wasnt made for these type of tracks. Even a cheap Subaru Wagon car can outperform a completely tunned Skyline or Viper.
