Thanks Mr,.Ryan.For me personal this video was very usefull. It helps me a lot. I share it to all my friends. Not to complicated explanations. I will study all your other video too. I wish you all the best. Greatings from Slovenia !!!
Great video on improving tennis serve, many thanks for making it! I never realized until watching your video that the tossing arm actually serves several important purposes: 1. it helps the serving hand relax when it supports the racket in the preparation stance, 2. it enables the toss on its way up, 3. it helps bring up the serving side of the shoulder on its way down, 4. it helps speed up the whipping effect and transfer the power to the racket head when it sends the tossing hand to the opposite armpit. Great stuff and can't wait to work on it and see some improvements on my serve!
Ryan, you are my GO-TO tennis coach - what great content!!! I'm so glad I found you. For me, the "checkpoint" approach to your instruction is really helpful. I think you mentioned coming up with a compilation of checkpoints. Have I missed it?
excellent. very clear. The leg drive video is perfect too. I follow the steps and points and I serve much faster than before. many thanks. Highly recommend
Wow! That birthday hat visual is unique and effective. For a while I’ve struggled to get my elbow to come forward more to get into stronger throwing finish (I was kinda on the comb the back of your hair as opposed to combing across the top...which I’m bald on top anyway so that’s out the window 😂) Very structured and good instruction!! 🙏
Thank you for great lessons and advice. About the serve, other instructors do not seem to agree on the ‘throwing’ idea. The other question I have is about using the palm down movement or not. That also seems to be taught by some instructors but not by others.
Been looking at a lot of tennis coaches online and after a while i end up very confused. I like the concept of the birthday hat and i am now practicing in the garden (in lockdown so can’t use courts) . Hope that if i can get all the moments in sequence I might have a faster serve. Very good instruction and a it makes common sense- just wish i was 6’ 4” and i can get the muscle memory.
Great video, I like your ball toss and bringing the racquet over my head had only one chance to practice but was using the palm up ball toss. Looking forward to implementing your 7 points serve strategy. Thank Again.

I am still trying to improve (my age and physical condition have never been the limiting factor -- my skill level is and has always been the limiting factor! I really fully agreed with this gentleman. The coach teaches with real passion for tennis and with so much knowledge of the game in such detail. I am hooked to his videos. I have learnt so much. Thank you!!!
Yes brilliant explaination! I just assumed I had a slightly weak serve and that was that... nothing I could really do about it. But now I think there is a ton I could work on...once we are not in lockdown perhaps. Thanks 😊. Really good coaching👍👍
played a match tried to do the serve with palm down before i came up to pronate and it felt like even though i am suffering from shoulder fatigue , when it worked it felt good and much easier to get effortless power , so thanks for this.
wow right the best tutorial I ever heard in the youtube even I didnt try it yet I believed on what you saying, the best coach for me, thanks for your unselfish idea
Excellent list of Check Points for the serve. I would add that after you release the ball ALLOW YOUR TOSSING ARM TO CONTINUE UPWARD ALMOST TO THE VERTICAL. This will insure a reasonable height for the ball and it helps to get you into the "Power Position" where your front shoulder is higher than your back shoulder. Another outstanding tennis video. Bravo.
Been watching this video at least two dozen times to catch details. Still working on the toss and birthday hat, but my sensor reveals I've already added 2mph to my serve on the deuce side. I call that "progress". More to come. Thanks!
Are you kidding me?!?!?! That’s amazing!!! Every little bit helps. John you just freaking made my day!! You Rick and thank you for the support!!! Have a great Sunday!
Noticing a nice improvement in my serve. Still needing work on the birthday hats drill, however. Seems easier when I move my elbow from right to left instead of my arm.
Excellent instruction. My main problem comes between checkpoint 3 and 5: when the hitting elbow swings from behind to in front and up slightly, mine stops half way (90 degrees of the semi circle/ pointing to side fence) and then extends to contact. This results in a nine o'clock racket drop. As I've served like this for years I'm finding it tough to undo the muscle memory. Any thoughts on this? I can reach 80mph with this technique. Hoping a full racket drop could increase the speed?
Thanks Ryan. Could you please comment on the lag/delay between the palm down and birthday hat please? I've noticed on slomo the pros have a delay then explode up and the hat is knocked off fairly late in the motion?
Excellent presentation. I have a question. I do serve better during practice. During a game i can not serve at all. The ball either goes to the net or I serve long. What is the reason and what to do to serve better while playing game?
You need way more views, this was super helpful. My serve is by far the weakest, most frustrating part of my game. Groundstrokes and such are pretty good, but playing competitive racquetball for a long time gave me no foundation for the tennis serve. Nor really baseball and football. Breaking it down into these positions is awesome as well as repeating that tennis is an edge game - especially when I frame one into low Earth orbit over the neighboring houses. Speaking of this, I've got a question about the toss. I know for most serves, you're throwing it above or slightly behind your body, but should the toss be right over your front foot, or more out into the court? I notice my misses are extreme the farther the toss is from the baseline (I'm a lefty, so I try to use relative terms rather than left/right if that makes sense)
For your checkpoint 2, you show the racquet tip facing to the right, and the strings down. I see other serve progressions where the racquet tip is pointing to the right, but the strings are pointed towards the net( racquet turned 90 degrees from what you show). Is there a reason to choose one over the other?
We move to checkpoint 2 with a relaxed wrist and palm down. We then move to checkpoint 3 to knock off the birthday hat... By the time we get to racket drop position, it looks like the wrist angle has changed from flexion to a bit of extension. When does this happen? Sometimes it looks like you knock the birthday hat off with the leading edge of the racket (palm still down, wrist still flexed) and sometimes it looks like you knock off the birthday hat with the flat back-face of the racket (back was just facing up at checkpoint 2). Which is correct? Appreciate your instruction.
Wow, another great lesson. Thank you! I just went to my baseline and went through the steps and surprisingly I do most of these steps naturally on my first serve where I just whip it. When I do this, my first serve is actually pretty good that most people in my tennis class (even my instructor) cannot touch it, if it's in. My problem is that it's not very consistent (about 50% it's in) because it produces a very flat (but very powerful) first serve. My second serve is very different, I go much slower and try to do slice serve, but it feels very different. My instructor just tells me to swing it at the same speed as my first serve, but it doesn't work for me, the serve would more often go out when I do that. So I end up doing a very soft slice serve for my second serve. Please do a video for the slice serve or kick serve, how different is it from this serve you are teaching in this video? Thanks again
Ti Vul hello! Thanks for the comment. So glad to hear you do most of the checkpoints already. Also, feel free to look at my other videos as I’ve made snd uploaded slice and topspin serve videos before. Thanks again!!
Pardon for meddling in. I struggled for many years with my 2nd serve until somebody (I forgot unfortunately who was it, but on the RUclips) convinced me that the speed of the racket of the 2nd serve better be even higher then at the 1st serve (for at the 1st serve you normally apply more body weight in). So given the technic is clear the 2nd serve racket speed better to be very very high that makes the spin (both slice or top/kick) = control. Wish you great success! 👍👋
@@omarsultanov362 This is absolutely right! Want safety? It lies in spin and the only way you get the spin is with a lot of racquet head speed. But it has to be mostly vertical. If you know some physics, as Ryan obviously does, and think of the racquet traveling along a vector toward impact with the ball, the vertical component of that vector is going to be much larger than when you are trying to hit a relatively flat, fast first serve.
And why does safety lie in spin, topspin in this case? Because topspin brings the ball down faster than gravity will. So you can clear the net with much greater margin if you have topspin on the ball and still bring it down into the court. If you just rely on gravity, a serve hit with same forward velocity can't clear the net by as much and still land in the service box. The other alternative is to clear the net by a lot, but with gravity alone, you need to hit a "very slow serve" as the original poster described her/his second serve (the slice, sideways spin will not help to bring the ball down quickly). The slow serve gives gravity time to do its job. It will also be pounced on by good players.
Thanks Ryan for that detailed video again. Just one question: I´m a bit struggling with my pronation while using the Continental grip on bevel No 2. Somehow it´s a lot easier to pronate while using Continental grip on No 1 (if you can still call it a Continetal grip then). Have you ever heard of that, too? What do you suggest?
Hey Rick. I’m a big believer in doing what works for each individual. If using a modified grip is better for you then by all means use it. Thanks for the message and support.
Hi Ryan, really enjoying your videos. Question: Between checkpoints 4 and 5, as the racket on edge is approaching up towards the ball, would you say the racket's edge should be aimed directly at the ball or to the right of the ball? If to the right of the ball, roughly how many inches to the right? In other words, should I try to hit the ball with the edge of the racket? I realize that will not happen because the arm will pronate and contact will be with the face of the racket, but I'm just trying to envision and create a specific target that I am aiming for in order to get consistency with each serve attempt. Thanks. Mark
Hello Mark. Thanks for the support. You should feel like you’re leading with the edge right at the ball. That makes sure the center of the strings are lined up with the ball as your pronate. Thanks so much for the support.
Hi Ryan. Thanks for the video. When we contact the ball for a slice serve, should we contact bottom half of the ball or the side of the ball ? Where should racquet touch the ball ?
another great video, Ryan. One worry from me - don't you end up rather tied up? It looks a bit as if the server is using his arms to make himself a strait jacket :-) So I suppose this is partly a question about what happens next!
This has definitely improved my serve, but it just lacks speed of serve because I am too mechanical and the movement has a pause instead of a continuous movement. Any advice or further drills will be appreciated.
Glad it’s helped. Try lowering the toss to give you less time to swing. That’ll help eliminate the pause. Also be sure your tossing arm is going up first. That’ll also help you not pause. Let me know if that helps!!!
Is that the cobra style server on check point 2 number .. racket face down .. seems that the TP is only happen a fraction of time before knocking the BH .. is that correct??
I'm gonna use that hat! So I can modify my damm pizza serve!!!!!! And then I will be back with comments. I wish i could improve mi pizza serve!!! Good tips with the left arm to acelerate the serve!!!!
Lotta good stuff in here but you are overemphasizing position 2. Yes some great servers get to this position but many don't...Sampras chief among them. Keep the emphasis on staying away from the waiter position. The parallel cock position is not necessary and can feel unnatural.
I completely agree with you when it comes to San Francisco serve. Ash Barty is another Player who does not do what I taught in this video. The issue is that amateurs who use the waiters position need something that’s an exaggeration, that actually keeps them away from the waiters tray which is position 2. Since position 2 is an exaggeration when amateurs try it they end up doing either that or what Sampras or Ash barty do. No different than telling someone who’s always late to be early so that they end up on time. Thanks again for the support and have a great day!!!
Won't it be much better if you find a tennis court to give instructions on? You then don't have to indicate where the imaginary base line is. You can't even toss the ball here, not to mention serve actual balls to illustrate the effects of what you are instructing.
peacemsnger you are 100% correct. I’m currently in a situation where my time is very limited on court though. And when I’m on court I’m busy teaching lessons/classes without the ability to film videos. So for the time being I’ll need to instruct off court. Though not ideal my hope is to inform people of proper technique so that when they go out on the practice court they’re armed with some knowledge of how to improve. Thanks for the support. 👍

Glad it’s helped. Try lowering the toss to give you less time to swing. That’ll help eliminate the pause. Also be sure your tossing arm is going up first. That’ll also help you not pause. Let me know if that helps!!!

Is that the cobra style server on check point 2 number .. racket face down .. seems that the TP is only happen a fraction of time before knocking the BH .. is that correct??
tavomagno5 I’m not sure what TP stands for but yes I’ve heard it called the cobra before.
2MinuteTennis TP= Trophy Position .. thanks
I'm gonna use that hat! So I can modify my damm pizza serve!!!!!! And then I will be back with comments. I wish i could improve mi pizza serve!!! Good tips with the left arm to acelerate the serve!!!!
I once hit my forehead instead of the birthday hat. Hurts like hell.
Hi Ryan,
wow ! thats a thing
bob bojkov haha thanks so much
Lotta good stuff in here but you are overemphasizing position 2.
@@2MinuteTennis fair enough
Nice video, coach Ryan.
btw, shave your beard otherwise you might turn into a Taliban. haha

@@2MinuteTennis Many thanks for your positive response. I do appreciate your efforts in imparting the right techniques and your contributions to the tennis community. Looking forward to seeing more of your lessons on court.
peacemsnger I’m here to help. I was eager to answer you and I appreciate you understanding my current situation. Have a great day and if there’s a video topic you’d like covered just let me know. Thanks you!!!!!
Great lesson. Keep up the very good work👍
2MinuteTennis I don’t care where you teach this. It was the information I needed to correct my serve. You transformed my serve from a liability to a weapon. Thanks so much!
