Mudpaw being chili oil and his mentor being a dried chili actually has layers???
Like you said dried chili peppers also give the soup a spicy flavor, and can be a nice addition, but they aren’t great to find while taking a nice bite of whatever else may be in the soup, and can discourage the unfortunate being who takes a nice bite of spicy hot hell. Because of this they have to be removed or else they’ll ruin the pleasure of eating the soup without having to fear the sudden spice in what’s already moderately spicy.
This ties into Wrentail being a good mentor, but what made him unbearable to Mudpaw *was* the sudden spicyness, the sudden lashing out, abusing him mentally and physically. He would’ve been tolerable otherwise and the two might’ve even had a bond.
Mudpaw WOULDVE enjoyed his soup!
Mudpaw being chili oil actually makes SENSE. He is like Wrentail in a lot of ways! Spicy and spiteful for seemingly no reason other than that’s just how he is. But the difference between the two is he doesn’t need to be removed because he’s not a bad cat. He won’t ruin the soup. He just needs to figure out how to cope properly with being hurt over and over. That part ties in with Starclan feeling like he needs to be removed, or he’ll ruin the soup that is his clanmates. But Mudpaw is actually an important addition and flavor to the soup! He is a chili like Wrentail, but he’s a better form of chili, a chili that can still be kept in the soup, that can still be helpful to the flavor.
You also pointed out chili oil floats on the top of the broth and isn’t easy to mix in. That ties to Mudpaw unable to make connections with his classmates because he’s like an oil. You can’t mix oil with water. The two just don’t go together. He has trouble fitting in because he’s just not like his clanmates. They don’t understand each other.
Honestly I can’t believe you put that much thought into making your angsty battle kitties ingredients that actually fit with their characters lmao

I love how you just broke down your battle cat ocs' personalities in the most interesting way possible. I feel like I know them all a lot better, when before I only felt I knew Mudpaw and had hazy ideas for the others, some which were confirmed and others that were wildly off. I don’t think there is anything more neurodivergent than going into detail about your battle cat ocs and what soup ingredient they are associated with. If I lost people talking about how words and names can be different colors, shapes, and textures, then this would have them utterly hopeless

I'm impressed how you broke down your characters the way you did with just soup ingredients. I understand all of them so well from just what the ingredients are like. For example, Whitepaw; Sweet Potato is very sweet and works with almost every soup, so therefore she's a real sweetie and gets along with everyone. This is basically a 101 on all the characters in your story and I'm loving it!
You described your OCs very well to each ingredient! I barely eat soup myself, but even so your descriptions made a lot of sense!

2:32 in like 4th grade sometimes our teacher would give us slices of ginger root since gum wasn’t aloud we would just suck on the slice until it tasted nasty I have very clear memories of this dhdhfdsbbsna

honestly I’m kinda craving soup now too...
With my characters as soup ingredients... hm.. let's stick to my Torclan characters because if there's any of my characters I'd make a story like yours out of it would be them!
Berry'gaze is celery, it's healthy and a bit out of place most of the time but very soft and simultaneously crunchy.
Moth'stripe is bone marrow, it's not what you'd expect to be in a soup if you've got little experience and no one really mentions it's there until you comment on it. But, it's the base, it's solid, it's tasty.
Silver'hare is peppercorn. Just straight pepper corn. Specifically straight peppercorn in an otherwise creamy and gentle flavored soup. He is the sudden and extremely unpleasant crunch that leaves a bitter and bad taste.
Arnica'paw/seed is potatoes. Soaks up flavor, but not as much as tofu, and is always there when you need a good and tasty soup ingredient. A little mushy and easily ruinable, though.
Ginger'paw/gaze is ginger.... because..... cmon
Breeze'flower is chickpeas. Its just really good, yknow? Hardy, can get really soft and creamy, and just all around wonderful.
Bracken'paw and Golden'paw(conjoined twins!) Are broccoli. Alot of people think it's weird, but the people that love it truly do love it.
Sand'paw is chicken chunks. Specifically the kind that don't taste bad but scare you at first because you have no idea what it is.
Rose'stripe is noodles. The first thing to go.

As a polish, I guessed I'm gonna see like: carrots, parsley, potatoes mayby tomatoes if its tomato soup, and then noodels or ready bullion XDD I was suprised XD Mayby we just have dieffrent definition of soups or just how we understand it, and i knew this things exist, but I would never put some rice to a soup xD

and hmmm, my OCs... I think Kestrelstar would be beans. Just because people either seem to REALLY like em or REALLY hate em, not really an in-between there. Lightningfur (main antagonist) would be like finding a hair in your soup... you don't notice until it's already down your throat and then you can't get it out. She's a piece of work, Lightning is. Wingleap (deputy) I think would be the broth, just because without him the clan would be more of a mess than it already is, and your soup kinda falls apart if it doesn't have a broth.

My OC ReedBlossom is definitely a tomato, because tomatoes are delicious, sweet, and it'll be very pleasant if you get a big chunk of tomato in your bite (for me atleast) also one of ReedBlossoms main colorations is red, and red is usually associated with tomatoes! :D

love this!!! never seen wrentail in color before and I have a note/question as a cat breed/pattern fanatic, is wrentail trans or just a rare chance? getting a male tricolor like him is like a 1 in 3000 chance, of course battle cats are very genetically inaccurate in the books and just about having fun, but I'm still curious if you've thought it over!!
He’s one of the genetic rarities! I didn’t want the abusive character to be one of the few trans characters ya know? Felt kinda gross haha

Remus is from a scrapped ending where mudpaw ends up driven out of the clan, and finds his way to a small town! While he’s having trouble navigating the place, he basically just gets adopted into a housecat friend group. Remus is the one who first makes friends with mudpaw in that storyline!

hmm well the BORING answer is “lots of practice” but I’ll try to think of a few tips!! Incoming wall of text haha
When I’m designing a character, I usually try to pick an “aspect” to emphasize, or a certain angle/curve I’ll use a lot in the design! Like when I draw mudpaw, his big design thing is his little fur spikes, his lanky-ness, and his face being a very particular shape (which is a little hard to describe in words but is sort of triangular??). Compare that to drawing a character like puddlepaw, which is all big curves and round shapes! Or another like sandleap, who I always draw sort of cartoonishly ‘stretched out’ with big ol paws and ears.
I try to make characters that people could look at without any color and yet still be differentiated! And a lot of that is just kinda. picking a shape for each one haha. Like mudpaw is triangles (pointy and sharp like his personality), hawkpaw is squares and curves (also Being Tall) (solid and steady), puddlepaw is circles and long/wide curves (soft and approachable), and whitepaw is a mix of sharp angles and soft curves (like his lil cheek fluffs)!
Little details, especially in the face/ears, can go a long way in making a character recognizable and different from you other characters! I have a few different types of ears that I give my characters (big, small, pointy, rounded, etc) but I also have their ears set on slightly different places on their heads. Like Hawkpaw‘s ears are set high up on her head, making her always look alert, while Sandleap’s ears are set a little more on the sides of his head, to make them seem more flared out!
Fur types/lengths are another great tool for designing a cat character. Like, Foxjaw and Owlpounce have very similar body types and fur lengths, but because Foxjaw’s fur has those clean cut edges while Owlpounce has those rounded fluffy points, they end up having different silhouettes!
I hope some of this word salad has been actually helpful, a lot of what I’ve learned about character design is through trial and error! I hope this all makes sense??
tldr: choose specific shapes for specific character and incorporate them into their designs
