  • Hey guys ! We successfully created a great DIY skimmer pond filter box that can change heights due to water level changes - float or not.
    Parts to make
Washable Amazon Course Filter roll material (black) $22
Washable Amazon Fine Filter roll material (white) $35 link below
Washable petco aquarium fine roll filter material (blue) $10
Box Target heavy duty industrial tote 27 gallon with lid $20 link below
Mesh front and firm plastic support inside $10
Pump 4500 GPM submersable pump from harbor freight with coupon + 2 year extended warranty $120
Exit pipe we carry the water away from the box about 15 feet $30
Mouth of the tote cut below handle
Smaller better you can always cut it bigger later
We added pool noodle float on 3 sides if we wanted to make it float. Not dollar tree those get eater logged. Thicker the better. We ran a rope through and cut noodle at the corners and tied the rope around the top. If you float it you will need weights on top because the pump is so strong. You will have to make a lot of adjustments to get it just right.
We lay the filter material not stand it up. We want as much in the water as possible and want the dirty water to be forced to travel over every bit of all layers of the filter.
We put the pump in the back and have a counter weight large stone in the middle. You will have to experiment with your water flow to get it just right.
Our pump exit exit goes out the side of the box and the hose we bought is about 15 feet long. The hose goes through a perfectly cut to size hole in the side of the tote. Very small amount of water does excape through the hole but its minimal and not bug enough for a fish.
To disguise we are going to decorate the tote top with plants.
If your tote isnt deep enough your pump will work too well. Make sure it's deep enough so it has enough water.
Your pump will come with different outlet sizes. Bigger means more water flow. More water flow means it's harder to get the box just right especially if its floating. We had to step ours up and down a few times to get the flow and volume we wanted. We went one size up from a garden hose.

This was a great instructional video. My question is do you think a system like this would work for a small duck pond(4 ducks)?
I just noticed this was from 2 yrs ago. So you still have the same system and if so could you do a follow video? Thanks

What kind of substrate do you have your plants in please? I put a plant in my koi pond 2 years ago (my first small pond) and it killed all of my fish. I have been afraid to put any plants into my pond since then. I do have 1 water lily that is in a mesh bag with some small pebbles to hold it down and protect the roots from the fish but that was given to me from someone that i bought koi from and they didn’t speak very good English. I’m afraid that i would go buy beautiful plants from like a Home Depot and then kill all of my fish again.

Where's the video on the biological filter?

It is a secondary pump at the bottom of the deepest part. It pulls and dumps the water on top of a new rolling trash can full of bio material with an exit at the bottom. That exit is gravity fed and goes to a small waterfall and back into the pond. The bio material are hundreds of dollar store plastic scrubbiest ( round colored) enough to fill the whole trash can. We have a large piece of rolled filter material on the top which we clean off and our back with a pressure hose once a week. This works amazingly well and super simple
