      I have been contemplating a design for a 55'er myself for a couple of years now. I have found that it is mostly the mechanical filtering that is doing most of the water clarification.

    • @justbecause3187
      @justbecause3187 2 года назад +2

      @@78tag the design in this video looks to be about 80% mechanical/bio filter and 20% swirl separator, so you could definitely build better stand alone swirl filters if you wanted to. It does look pretty good for an all in one solution and I don't doubt it does a great job, but it would still be interesting to see how much of the solids the swirl part manages to catch.

    Very good video! This is pretty much a small skippy filter but with a clean out added. Skippy says never clean them ever ever...but I can't wrap my head around that. I had one for about 15 years. I grew plants in it and the root system basically took over until it was impossible to clean. At that point I just let it do its thing. Never had a problem.

    The design is good, but the filter material is to fine and compact. Its like putting an end cap on the pump. I think it would be better if you cut the green pads into 4 pieces and just drop them in the bucket. with out compacting it, so water can flow around and through without to much resistance. The idea with this type of filter is it doesn't need or shouldn't be cleaned and the top should be exposed to sunlight.

    I got to the end of the video before I figured out what was going on. So, if I understand what this is, it is a pressurized (versus gravity) biofilter. The outlet in the bottom (which I didn't see you use) must be for cleaning the unit. Is this correct? I would have liked to see how you go about cleaning this unit. I am just beginning to learn about biofilters and am attempting to understand the benefits of pressurized versus gravity drain biofilters.

    Great video... The main issue that jumped out was when you finished by filling the filter with tap water that contains chlorine or chlarimaines. Instead, use aquarium water, or precondition your water. I prepare all my filter media in a big laundry sacka in the flow of a differnt filter, aquarium, or pond to grow a bio film. Spend the time to grow your beneficial biome just as your would your livestock. Never rinse your filter media with tap water because it kills off your bacteria. It will save you weeks of having to reestablishing the colony of beneficial bacteria. That being said, the design was very cost effectve and effecient. Also, this is not a swirl filter as the media is stationary. A swirl filter utilizes the same as spinning principal as a cyclonic partical seperator in a wood shop dust colletcor. Keep up the great educational work. :) I'm a biologist that managed millions of gallons of aquatic life. I enjoyed watching your video. GinoJazz.com

First off, I'd like to compliment you on this video which is the first of yours that I have watched. Now onto my question. What power would you recommend for the pump for this particular setup? Bonus question... where do you place the pump in this setup? The reason I ask is because one of the biggest "bottlenecks" that I struggle with in my pond is "pump gunk". The pump regularly requires extensive cleaning to prevent burnout.

    • @MYANIMALHOUSE
      @MYANIMALHOUSE  3 года назад +1

    I have a question that hopefully isn't too stupid ;) Since the water is going into the bottom, why does it need to go into the bucket from the top? Why not enter at the bottom?

    Sorry but those aren't sponges they are called scrubbers! Sponges would soak up the water these let water go through them ju d t saying because some people won't see the difference and would buy sponges which might not work i think good video

    Amazing DIY build! Very clear explanation.
    I started raising Tilapias (not aquaponics but to breed and consume) and the amount of waste they produce is beyond explanation lol. Been looking for something like this to help with the poop cleaning. Will definitely be building something similar some time soon.

    I built a filter using this method for my styrofoam pond. When I switch off the pump, the water from the filter flows back into the pond. I've placed the filter above the pond level. Any idea how to fix this issue?

    • @MYANIMALHOUSE
      @MYANIMALHOUSE  3 года назад +1

      When you shut off the pump disconnect the hose to the filter

    • @MYANIMALHOUSE

      Or put in a Shut off Valve

    Yep, this is as sweet ass of a home made DIY doohickey as you are ever gonna lay eyes on. I know that sombitch is gonna work like a charm. The only changes I will make is, I'm using a 25 gallon blue water tank & I will not add 2 giant rocks to hold down the media. Respectfully, in my opinion, it's a waste of valuable filtration space. I will add a fine pea gravel atop of a finer mesh seperator. Thanks a million for the killer easy to understand and afford filter design video. It helped Ole WW out quite a bit.
    Go easy pimp & GOD Bless!

    There are so many videos on filters on youtube...all slightly different. Very confusing. I have 2 small ponds with a small river connecting them. I was thinking of making something simple filter where my punk draws water from the LEFT pond through a hose over to my right my pond side but drains into a bucket first...and inside this id put a hole at the bottom with some rocks...then on top of the rocks some polyfil and then on top of the polyfill id have some kitchen sponges and on top of the kitchen sponds id have a pasta strainer to catch big things... does that sound insane? And does the order of the things sound correct. Oh and I am unsure what the difference between polyfill and sponge purpose is.

    I just made a 5 gallon bucket canister filter for my aquascape tank, it contain only biomedia. Using the same swirling effect on bottom. A prefilter is fit on the intake to collect the dirt. Wish I found your video earlier, my design would be more perfect. Hope I can make better filter next time. Tx for the inspiration.

    WOW! There's a blast from the past! That big metal 68"x38" Camel Joe advertising sign is worth around $800 bucks now... 23:58 sorry, what'd you say? 😜 I'm in the process of redesigning a pump/filter debris skimmer for my Dad's 1800 gallon Koi pond so thanks for the ideas. I think I'm going to build a massive version of something like this but "upside-down", with the feed pipe swirl "T" up top, layers of fine filter media on top, then rocks at the bottom around the pump and also a valve at the bottom too so you can open it and let any super fine sediment flush out every so often into a hidden French drain. All that is just to keep the pump clear and working, which feeds up to two big bio-filter drums. With the feed coming from the top I think it should be easier to clean out larger debris or possibly even be "maintenance free"? (The pond is under a bunch of Fir trees, so lots of stupid NEEDLES to deal with...)
