I had this professor the same semester that my mom died. I was 19 years old. I told him that my mom was in the hospital. He asked me if she’s going to be OK, and I shook my head no. He said “OK, that’s tough, but just focus.” I wasn’t able to keep my grades up. After we got our tests back, he told the class that if we were struggling we should come talk to him. So that’s what I did, and it was like he completely forgot that I told him my mom was dying. He said something very dismissive and deflecting, basically to tell me that I’m too little too late and that I should’ve come in earlier. But I had told him previously that I was having trouble with time management because I was driving back-and-forth to Kaiser on Sunset Boulevard every day for two weeks. He either completely forgot or just didn’t care and wanted to go home and was willing to tell me whatever would get me out of his classroom. He made me cry and then he gave me a C. I retook the class at Cal Poly and got an A. I’m a smart girl, I just needed some support. This was not the first, nor was it the last time I was not given the support I needed while attending all three Ventura county community colleges.

I had an employer that did the same thing. I was in the back room crying a couple weeks after I repeatedly said "my mom is dying and that's what's wrong." She just goes, "oh," and I got cut from the entire schedule because of my "attitude." Some people are just like this. But you never forget that they're like this.

When I go back to visit my hometown I always remember that professor and what he did to me in front of everyone in the classroom. I would like to talk to him and let him know how it impacted my life.

The school is to blame too. At my college campus there was an office dedicated to students with disabilities and they coordinated with professors to accommodate students. If you didn’t want to go up to the professor and tell them you needed accommodations, the ADA office did it for you. Then again, this is OC.

The students who witnessed it and tried to intervene where shut down and he didn't seem to give a damn about the distress he was causing! this is why young white privileged kids shouldn't by given professorships. There's a reason professors in the past slightly older, more MATURE, people. The emphasis is on mature. Just because someone is good in their field, it doesn't automatically qualify them of educational experts. There's also a high level of maturity (no necessarily linked to age), compassion and social awareness skill required by an educator, especially when dealing with older more adult students. his attitude and statements are reasonable in the beginning if he was never made aware of her disability and translator. but after he was made aware.. he was pig headed and kept treating her like she was in the wrong instead if just apologizing and explaining politely how things looked from his point of view. im hard of hearing and customers treat me like this. they take it so personally when you don't respond because you didn't hear them. they feel disrespected and bullied when really that ends up being them even after i explain that I'm hard of hearing.
