"afraid of my lack of talent." Trent, you did all of the instruments by yourself and learned them because bands weren't getting the sound you wanted, except drums. That is insanely talented.
Vlad Tepes Dracul let's see... what about Dave Grohl, Josh Homme, & Jack White? they are also talented people and played almost all the instruments in their first album
Lap Duy Nguyen Thien Of course they should be greatly revered, the problem is often that the younger audience does not know or understand how truly incredible that is.
Vlad Tepes Dracul III who cares though. Why do you care so much about random kids and what they know about executing music. Trent isnt even the genius everyone makes him out to be. He had lots of help and ushered into the industry. he had access to knowledge and equipment, its really not as genius as you think. Hes also a liar and closet egomaniac.
Nick Kapenkar Him and my LOVE of music are the reasons why I am a DJ for 25 years. So much so that my early goth band mates would jokingly tease me nicknamed me Boy Reznor cause all my Synth riffs were dark dance riffs. However I Agree Trent is a Superamazingly talented hombre It’s crazy how much he hated himself
Yes and you get a double album worth of NIN...I saw them on that tour and getting that album in 99 I was 18..The Fragile & Broken are top 2 favorite records..
Trent and NIN changed my life when it was going from really bad to worse. It's still the most incredible synchronicity I've ever experienced, 11 years later. Thank you.
I remember maybe around 1995....I went to Media Play to buy a new CD, and I saw Further Down The Spiral. The CD cost $3.99 and I thought it was a single or a sampling (CDs generally cost between $12 and $15 back then). I bought the CD, found out it was a full length album, and it literally blew my mind. I frickin loved it! and $3.99!!?....Trent was a true pioneer. I respect the shit out of NIN since that day forward. Also, once you've seen him live....forget about it. Spectacular performer!
I completely agree with Trent when he says that "With Teeth" was his most honest record. I noticed that the first time I listened to the thing the whole way through. He was self-reflective on a lot of things when it came to his past & was growing as a person in the songs, and I remember getting so excited as the record went on & on. Trent has such a great way of telling his stories and making you feel a part of it somehow. He's not on a pedestal on the record, it's almost like he's sitting down and telling you something so very personal. The fact that he ever thought of suicide makes me really sad, because he's such a good person.
You have no idea how many people I've come across that thinks NIN is an actual band. It's one guy until he tours. I've known this since I was a teenager. Recognize the talent.
Trent has sailed so close to the edge he's frightened by the concept of going over into the unknown....over intellectualizing things is a component of it all.....
Somebody told me recently that I need to get out of my own head. If you know what you're doing, even if you don't, back off of the throttle and check what is happening around you. It's most vital.
I miss the music industry in the 90's... I never thought I'd say that but there was music stores, more concerts, better exposure in terms of culture...Say what you will I liked digging and taking chances on bands. I didn't mind paying for physical copies (still don't). MTV played music videos from more then just 10 pop bullshit R and B "market-rap" ...good times
Although, it's good to see less people relying on record labels. So many artists that have emerged that labels would never have given a chance, some of them are pretty good too!
I definitely feel your sentiment despite not being alive in the 90s. I do love physical music and taking a chance on something i’ve never heard, but I also love that the internet can expose you to so much amazing music from all over. There’s good in both
The one good thing to come from Terminator Salvation was the trailer. I was instantly mesmerized and the first thing I did after the movie i was watching, was RUclips terminator salvation trailer music. I've listened to the fragile so much I can't even put a number on it. Pretty hate machine is a close second in number of listens. Now the watchmen score is racing to number 1.
Trent was a master at many things but one for sure is the way he puts together live shows. I went to many shows on the Fragile tour and the With Teeth tour. Great light show.

Intelligent, humble, down to earth and extremely creative. Everything a human being should be. I do hope Tapeworm will be revisited in the future because that project has immense potential.
Props on this video, you did a great job narrowing Reznor’s life through interviews. He’s quite transparent and enjoyed the parts and snippets you created here. Centers the art in music from creation peeling pieces of the human spirit for fans to enjoy. Thank You
Interesting thoughts from Trent here. I'm not a musician, but I am creative in other ways and listening to him outlining his creative process was very insightful.
Nice mix of stuff where you can see some of what he's gone through. No matter what you think of Trent, it's hard to deny that surviving this long in the music industry, doing both performance and soundtrack work, is an admirable feat. It's obvious age has tempered him somewhat, and he comes across as pretty level in this.
Very well done, sir! I'm impressed of how you managed to get a narrative deep story out of seemingly regular work-related interviews. While watching this I felt how the inner world of a person revolves around his personality, deeds and occupation in life. How that inner world has a life of it's own and, if uncontrolled, can distort your reality, can influence personality in unpredictable ways, somewhat damaging or flatout destructible, can force one's deeds against his values or judgement or will. Here we see a story of a human being, flawed like everyone else in many relatable ways. And the best part is when we can clearly see that one can always take responsibility for his fate, for his actions, for who he/she is in the end, fighting off the desires and gaining control over that inner world and, as a result, things outside of it that we call life. This film also made me like NIN's song "everything" and gain deep respect for it, now that I've understood the story of a life struggle that inspired it.
Trent is literally me, man. Ego aside, hearing that he was the only one producing those compositions, writing the lyrics, doing the vocals, most likely engineering them as well. No way am I his equal, but this is my rule of thumb 95% of the time. This man is the epitome of what it means to be musically independent, and to create an entirely new genre.
I like how at one point he mentions an upcoming album is more like a collection of songs that can stand on their own as opposed to previous albums that are epic as a whole. Then a few years later he mentions his new album will be like a whole piece instead of just a collection of songs. Both are great ways to look at it. Myself personally I always try to do the next thing differently than the last one to try and keep things fresh. This was an informative and inspirational video.
There's an honesty and an integrity to it, that I think can only come from meaning something, instead of pretending you're a character doing something.
PHM is still my favorite album he's done. Live he is fantastic I was lucky enough a while back he toured twice in a small venue my brother and I went to both . He was insecure and stated he was afraid of his lack of talent WTF,. He's one of the most innovative and extremely talented people I've heard in a long time even plus his work with Atticus Ross. He took on Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids I still refer to them. His wife has a beautiful voice as well. I can honestly say I like every single album this man has created. I loved his induction speech for The Cure at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He should be inducted as well. The Cure's best album Pornography.(1982)
Fragile was 24/7 for 3 years straight.... What a fucking genius masterpiece. I am jelaous I can't forget about this album completely just to be able to discover it again!
Tomas, thank you for putting this together. It's so interesting to see someone who is so talented, be so insecure. Nine Inch Nails is by far one of the best bands that has ever existed.
Nice job, Tomas! As someone who has loved NIN since... I think 1994, it's a treat actually SEEING interviews with Trent (I've read lots over the ages, but, for whatever reason, actually not SEEN many). SUPER inspiring stuff. Thanks for assembling these, in the way you did.
And he's still kicking fucking ass almost 20 years later. I just saw him end a tour in Cleveland for a one night only reunion with the 90s lineup. It was perfect, as always. Nine Inch Nails has provided the soundtrack to my life for most of my 40 years.
1:03 the way they cut from one scene to another made it look like he played that gig then went to the interview\ like Yeah me Trent Reznor when i'm not on tour i play gigs in a retro 80s pop band in the town i grew up in just for giggles.
and Trent, if you ever read this,I'd like to say that you are one of the most capable people that I've ever heard of in articulating the complex emotions of..being a...human (I lack your talents, clearly)

Amazing. Saw him once live right up front about 2 years ago.....Didn't get to meet him however maybe someday...Either way I will be following him. I really loved "The Fragile" more than the other albums but every album has it's place.
Oh no, not weird at all! Some people just "have that voice" or they don't. Thanks Tomas Guitar for posting, and thank you to Trent Reznor for creating so much music that expresses real emotion: please keep doing so for many years to come!
Brilliant piece! I find myself a bit envious. I've always wanted to work with him too and this is probably as close as I will ever get. I had no idea he and I had so much in common, being so opposite. I love it. I really love it! Thank you so much for this.

"afraid of lack of talent" -- says the most talented musician ever IMO.
It's every artist's biggest fear.
Agreed!
I agree. Trent is the most talented musician I have ever seen/heard.
shows how hard he worked, he never let it go to his head, hes a very smart person period
Nick Kapenkar Him and my LOVE of music are the reasons why I am a DJ for 25 years. Most people agree that the downward spiral was his masterpiece. I totally get that but for me, I think the Fragile was his true masterpiece.
Yes and you get a double album worth of NIN...I saw them on that tour and getting that album in 99 I was 18..The Fragile & Broken are top 2 favorite records..
Absolutely agree. The Fragile is one of my favourite albums of all time.
With Teeth is his tue masterpiece imo it’s solid bangers
The come latelys like the fragile better
With teeth is the best album by far imo
I like how vulnerable and open he is in his interviews
Ikr
He is the motzart of our time, I'm just happy he made it through the angry time and is in a happy place
in a warm place even
nine inch nails kept me alive for 38 years so far, thanks for the music trent
You kept yourself alive.
Keeshan Barton...ditto mate. Like you’d not believe unless you’ve lived it mate.
Hope you're doing well

I'm jealous tbh
Handsome man, right after Andrew Eldritch. :)

Not true anymore, only in the begging, he has used a studio band since 94
izer202
He works with Atticus Ross now
I think its smart, the Prodigy is the same idea. Liam Howlett staying behind the scenes making all the music.
This and the prodigy

"with teeth" is by far the best NIN album. i put Reznor up there with the greats. lyrically he can't really be touched.
Lyrically I personally think Trent is pretty bad... musically... he is a GOD

With Teeth es como In Rainbows: álbumes de la década del 2000 que superaron sus obras maestras de los 90 (The Downward Spiral y Ok Computer).
Obviously never heard of Chris Cornell...may he Rest In Peace
Uhhh....dude No. I love NIN, but lyrics are not his specialty.
