- Sensei Jesse Enkamp--the "Karate Nerd"-- is a long-time student, popular teacher, a successful entrepreneur, a blogging superstar, and a world-class Karate competitor.
Does all of that make him a martial arts sell-out... or a friggin' genius? Listen to the man himself and let me know what you think! :)

Thanks for the unique interview Sensei Ando! 😄 Hopefully people realize martial arts is not about the income... it’s about the outcome! 🙏 Keep keepin’ it real! 👊
Thanks for sharing so much, sir! 🙏🏻 You’re definitely changing lives... which is the greatest outcome. 🙌🏼
+JesseEnkamp I am fascinated by that painting behind you. What is the story there?
Yes he is a sellout, oh no he's on the podcast, lol, oh no this is his comment, lol
No sellout. He is the real deal. Great guy. Great instructor. Thanks for sharing!!!
I agree!👍🏼
First a video of Jesse teaching Icy Mike a kata and now a video of Ando and Jesse again? My day couldn't get better! Love the co-operation between you all!
Glad we’re all connected, sir!
Working in the same vineyard!
Two guys here who are a credit to martial arts! When I started training as a teenager in the late 1960s in the north of England there was no internet and finding a good instructor was not easy! Young martial artists are so lucky to be able to access the net as a supplement to their Dojo training. Of course, there are many fakes out there but after a little bit of training and research, they are easy to weed out. I have been following these two guys for a while now and as far as I am concerned they are both well worth it and I always feel I have learned something after watching them. Do not forget that it is free as well, so a big thank you to you both for taking the time to teach online!
Your constant support is a great gift, sir. Thank you!🙏🏻
Jesse Enkamp seems like a genuine guy, I hope nothing but the best for him.
But he's not a sell out in his perspective he's spreading martial arts and having fun doing so.
He is also smart with marketing himself to get the attention needed to financially be safe and get his word out there.
Jesse Enkamp looks like he's living the dream.
Seems so! :)
Fantastic interview! Thank you for doing this. I can honestly say that Jesse has had a very positive impact on me. I love his humility, his skills and his willingness to help us all expand our knowledge.
I’m a fan, too! Thank you!
Thank you for all of your inspiration and advice. And I look forward to hearing more from you. Thank you.
Thank you very much, Felix!
Wow! Fantastic! Just finished watching Jesse teach icy mike a kata and then this came up! Absolutely respect and admire you both!My 2 favorite martial artists, besides my sensei( haha)
Respect and admiration to you, too! 🙏🏻
exactly the same here! gotta love the YT algo, lol.
Love both you guys! Thank you for all yall do. Your videos truly make a positive impact. At least for me.
Thanks for the smile, sir!
In my opinion, you two are the most inspiring outcome of RUclips. Keep going and keep fighting, for yourself and for everybody alse out there who's enjoying your great content.
Thank you for the kind words, David! 🙏🏻
lol I love how you always throw in some comedic relief in between the information. You two are both great.
Thank you very much!
Awesome conversation!
It amazes me to see such motivated trainer, coach, mentors who are willing to pass on their skills to their students
Wish had the opportunity to learn from such committed personalities
Thank you very much for the positivity!🙏🏻
This is very nice collaboration and during this video we all could hear some very normal and useful thoughts and very interesting informations. I generally know from watching before his videos of Jesse thoughts and philosophy in general, and I find him completely ok as a person. Of course I don't know him personally, but as hi said, considering the part of his personality that he is giving to the public, I found him very normal and cool, so I like him for that. Additionally he is doing something that I am interested at, so that is just great. I also found some of your thoughts very cool, normal and useful in some of your videos , so I found both of you two guys very cool 😊👍🙏
Sounds like you’re very thoughtful and cool yourself! Thank you!
Wonderful interview. Very enlightening. Thanks, oss!! :)
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching!
Great video. From experience what I caught on the end... My very first formal class / 35 years ago still affects and drives me today. Great video
Glad you had a great foundation! Thanks for the comment!
I love both of your channel. It's like taking me on a journey , of let's search for the truth together. Martial Artists should be a family together. There is big path to go. And it's a pleasure to me, to be a part of the journey 🤗
I agree, Rade. One family of good people! Happy training!👍🏼
How dare Jesse attempt to make a living at what he loves doing, and is passionate about?! 😊
I'm glad that they made this video, because there's so much ridiculous idealism that martial art should never be about making a living ("it's not about making money.")
Martial arts, of course, like any endeavor, should never be about ripping people off, by making false claims of any sort.
But Jesse is the real deal, he's legitimate, so why shouldn't he be properly compensated?
If he can't make a living and what he's passionate about, he's not going to be able to continue doing it on a full-time basis, because paying utilities never stops.
And historically, the military arts, which is what martial arts is about, has always been about compensation (after all, the samurai were paid for their services.)
And yes, "value." Subconsciously, we only value those things that we properly compensate. In other words, we tend not to value those things that are just given to us for free.
Again, I'm not advocating the rip-off "mcdojo" artists. But legitimate instructors who are giving a legitimate service must be paid, idealism or not about "it's never about money."
Thanks for the comment, Michael!
Another great team up. I really enjoy the golden nuggets these two Sensei's provide. Oss!
Oss to you, sir! 🙏🏻
Great stuff.. keep it up, guys. thanks for the awesome interview
Thanks for watching!
This was an exceptionally interesting and deep interview. Excellent questions from Sensei Ando, excellent responses from Jesse
Thank you very much!
Excellent video, and begins to reveal parts of the complete Jesse Enkamp, beyond the karate nerd. Many thanks for sharing.
Agreed! It was cool to see another side of Jesse. 👍🏼
Awesome video, thanks for sharing your journey in both karate and your karate life
Thank you for watching! 🙏🏻

Hey! I grew to love Jessie after this interview. When I first started karate and google the term , Jessie website popped up. I didn’t like his delivery then. Guessed I missed out sth good. And he does have real skills!
Absolutely worth following!
A SELLOUT!? He gives nothing but good moves and instructions
Ya, Lot of time when sombody calls others 'sellout' in fact is pure jelousy
Uechi-Ryu practitioner here. I enjoyed this collab and love both your channels!

I love that there were ads right here! 😄
HA! 😄
Jesse Sensei's answer to your question at the 4 minute mark is spot on. This is why I like what he is dong and why I follow him.
Excellent! 👍🏼
Thanks a lot for the cool interview ! I really like to see you collaborate with Jesse Enkamp ^^ !
It was fun! Glad you liked it, too! 🙏🏻
Great interview! "Connect, don't collect!" Got it! I'm getting that on a t-shirt! ;) Great video - many thanks :)
Ha! Right? 😄
@@AndoMierzwa ;)
This was a great discussion. Felt like I gained quite a lot from this.
Very happy to hear that! Thank you!
I've lost my faith in karate years ago but Jesse is a genuinely great guy! Great interview
I’d like to think there’s good in everything and everyone. 😁 Thanks for the comment, sir!
Can I ask why you have lost faith in Karate? In Karate as a whole or a particular style?
Gene SImmons from KISS was once asked "are you a sell out?"
He responded "Every single night!"
Nothing wrong with making money doing what you love
HA! 😄 Thanks for that quote!
and he made a LOT!
check out his book 'Me, Inc' 😎👍
Thanks for the book recommendation!
@@KARATEbyJesse
For sure. It's an entertaining read!
And I think you will appreciate his enterprising spirit and work ethic ✊
Mr Enkamp by living your passion of karate you are passing on that knowledge to other people who share your passion for karate, even new people coming into the art you are inspiring them with that knowledge and passion to be the best they can be both at karate and in their personal life, keep up all the good hard work that you were doing, all the best to you and your family
Wowsers, two superstars together. Thanks this was cool.
Thank you so much, Alison!🙏🏻
Outstanding gentlemen! The values you embrace and live by are inspirational, and effective for living a meaningful life!Death is an incredible motivator, I agree wholeheartedly, squeezing the most out of every moment, is a wonderful way to live.unusual to see a person jesse’s age, have this wisdom! Thank you! Thank you!
He’s an old soul, for sure! Thanks for being here, Arlene!
Anyone misguided enough to thing badly of Jesse should go check the video he made about his mom. A such respectful son can't possibly be a bad person, and it also gives a good perspective on where he is coming from.
A very shrewd insight, sir!
He’s a young master! What he does is in concert with the spirit of the world at this time!!
True!
Always a good listen
I appreciate that. Thank you! 🙏🏻
I love Jesse and his content but what some of these “fans” who call him a sellout all ways seen to keep forgetting something, he isn’t your friend, he is a karate social media personality that needs to make money to continue doing what he loves. The content he gives is fantastic(some of the click bait makes me wince but hey whatever gets the views in), in both an informative and entertaining way but to expect this content from him without him making revenue from it is unfair.
I agree completely. 👍🏼
It’s almost like retard Marxists have infiltrated every level of society to complain about people that work harder than them at their chosen career path.
You mention your "parents" and how much they mean to you and who you are. We have seen your mother in a lot in videos and she is amazing. As a father of two sons myself, I would love to know more about your father's life and his influence in your lives so that I may try to inspire my sons in the same way to hopefully create the same motivated young men your parents created in you two.
Jesse probably won’t see your request over here, but it’s a great question!
Thanks @@AndoMierzwa, I've listened to a LOT of his content and looked for him to mention the subject but he hasn't as far as I've heard and, knowing Jesse, there must be a purpose behind that and I wouldn't want to press him, make him uncomfortable, or disrespect his privacy. He's just, AS YOU MENTIONED, so passionate and "alive" in so many ways and I've always looked for ways, as a father, to inspire my own sons to "thrive, not just survive". If you speak with him again, and he's comfortable speaking on the topic, I would love to know more about it. Respect and honor. /deepbow
@@rolandgdean Yes, sir! So noted. Although it sounds like your sensitivity and respect already make you a great role model!
Do what you love love what you do
I’m so glad I watched this video all the way through. I was put off by the title at first and the negativity I perceived towards Jesse. I thought whoa that’s not fair. He has a brand and he is a good promoter and very professional. He works hard. What’s this about! ... 😁
I’m glad I watched it. Thank you both !
Exactly! Thank you for watching! 🙏🏻
Mr. Enkamp.first of all I could careless what your haters say, because if they are getting upset then you are obviously doing something right,so I have observed you objectively.I veiw you and your work in the Karate world as invaluable. We are seeing a small renaissance in the karate community as far as practitioners opening their eyes and learning the value of kata, bunkai oyo and history. Your handy work is changing the world one karateka at a time and I salute you sir, well done.
Thanks sensei Ando cool video love it
Thank you very much!
Love this conversation👌
Thank you very much!
I came here to say that i love him and he's doing a great job then it turned out to be a nice video I'm glad you ❤
Absolutely! 😊🙏🏻
2:57 The Internet is actually a return to an older form of communication, oral history. Oral history is the greatest form of history.
The definition of selling out is to sacrifice one's ethics and values in exchange for personal gain.
To call him a sellout, one would have to prove that anything he's said goes against his personal values.
Well said.
Great interview
Thank you very much!
I enjoy watching and listening to Jesse Enkamp.
👍🏼
I asked jesse in the comments when he started Karate and said 2 years old 👍👍👍👍he is so honest
👍🏼
What you say is right, we as a martial arts also need to eat and survive. Why do we learn martial art?? To survive in a worst conditions of life, in old time people use it to survive at war.
Survive is #1!
Genius: he is entertaining and informed. He has great research and communication skills. He is among the best martial art RUclipsrs
Thank you for the comment, Andrea!
Did someone say ice cream??? Great chat. Good energy.
Stick it in your cone. 😁 Thanks for your good energy, sir!
Click bait got me in content made me stay amazing chat I will watch it again also a new subscribe to your channel oss
Thanks for staying! 😁
This is like having an interview with Steven Seagal and asking him are you the greatest martial artist ever?
😆
Good team interview!
Thank you very much!
Jesse embodies the spirit of Budo! An inspiration to me and I'm a"Judo Nerd"! hahaha
Love to see you guys talking.
Nerds unite! Thank you for the support! 😄
When the world opens backup again, I think you two, and maybe a few others, should do a brief teaching/seminar tour.
Misty Mountain Video Sounds fun! 😄👍
I demand pie on the tour bus!😄
Thank you men. You have made myself and my wife better!! God Bless
Bless you, too, Doctor! 🙏🏻
Makes me so happy to hear!
You know I'm really digging Sensei Ando!! He seams like a great guy and I would like to know more about his style. I think in one of the other videos he said it was a self-defense based system which is perfect because I study Kenpo Karate. What's the website or any other way I can receive more information. I've been looking to get involved in another system so this could be right for me. My name is Alan R. Love, Black Belt American Kenpo, 26 years and 19 as an instructor. Any further information is appreciated. Again, thanks!
Hi Allen! Thanks for the kind words, sir. Visit me over at SenseiAndo.com 🙏🏻
Both of you gentlemen are my role models 💪😎👊
Very kind of you to say. Thank you!
Thankyou Ando and Jesse loved the chat 😊
TMNT FOREVER Our pleasure!
Always happy to see you here! 🙏🏻
You’re not selling out if you’re providing value.
Amen.
22:02 The biggest Kung Fu impressions on me.
"The best defense is not to offend." - Chuck Norris for a Speed Stick deodorant commercial.
"When you want romance to come on strong, you have to come on soft." - Jane Seymour for a perfume commercial. (That is actually the ultimate Yin strategy, from the ultimate Woman.)
HA! 😄 those two quotes are definitely not shared enough. Thanks!
I am of the opinion that you only begin to really understand techniques when you have to teach them to other people.
Teaching is learning twice!
Great interview by two different mindsets due to a generation diffrence.
One comment I would like to put forward is that I believe all martial arts that came to the west were for Business not pleasure. These days you need to manage keeping a school profitable and also being humble to the martial art roots.
They can absolutely be a balance, yes. Thanks for the comment!
Insightful...
Thank you very much!
I think it was Walter O'Brien, if you know who that is, who once said: "We're all software people." Which means that in 2020, if we wish to remain relevant, we have to manage technology. Social media, web, video, LinkedIn, etc... all becomes a part of what makes our living, even if we bake bread! Mr. Enkamp does a marvelous job of building a future out of what he loves, while so many others fail to operate a Dojo for any length of time. He succeeds by being a software guy.
That’s a great term… thanks for sharing it! Happy training!
I was very happy to see that this was a legitimate interview and that the title was, maybe, a little clickbaity. I find Jesse's enthusiasm great and he often demonstrates techniques so while he can't critique my form I've learned a couple of moves from him and that's just huge. Jesse needs to make a couple of bucks so that he can share with the rest of us and that's all good.
All good is right. Thanks for the comment!
Is Jesse Enkamp a sell-out? Not only no, but HELL NO!!!
Well said, Terry!👍🏼
Absolutely Terry! Sensei Enkamp is not forcing anyone to buy products but offering a service we can choose to take up or not. Also, both he and Sensei Ando take time out to make videos teaching great stuff that we can all access online for free and I say a big thank you for that!
Excellent! 👍👊🏻🙏🏻
Thank you kindly, sir!
16:53 Pankration was in the Original Olympics.
I consider myself a martial arts and fitness freak (at least in terms of the enjoyment I get from it...skill...pending). Okinawa as separate from Japan. I've heard that karate delineation before. And I thought Okinawa was in Japan. Thinking I'm overlooking something historically. Or I'm just bad with directions
It’s an interesting history, for sure!
People like this inspired me to make my martial arts channel. In fact I am uploading videos as they speak. They both are super interesting people
Thank you! Good luck with your channel!
@@AndoMierzwa thank you!

HOW DARE YOU share your experiences with the world Jesse...Didn't you know that knowledge is meant to be horded? 🤣😋
Great Video guys. The idea of "Living Your Passion" is definitely something that everyone can grow from. Thank you both for the positive impact you have on the Martial Arts community as a whole.

22:02 From a few that that I have seen, the Chinese bo kata. Jesse said it looked exactly how he practices.
When I discovered the root of Western Chess, which is Indian Chess, Chinese Chess is closer to the original Indian Chess. I'm most impressed how Chinese Chess is closer to the common ancestor Indian than Western Chess.
And he had a most interesting style of writing back then on that blog.
Jesse, and you, Ando, have impacted my training. Thanks.
I appreciate that. Thank you! 🙏🏻
The dude sitting there talking on RUclips in the bright red gi that says "Happy Life Martial Arts" is calling the Karate Nerd overly-commercialized. Gotta love it! LOL
I love it for sure. 😁
10:11 Kung Fu movies have a positive impact on people, as seen by their popularity. EVERY movie is practically a Kung Fu movie. The Matrix, Taken 2, Kill Bill, etc.
1:50 You should read Spiderman comic books. Peter Parker has that Peter Parker / Spiderman dichotomy.
In fact, Karate Nerd is kinda like a super-hero name.
I hope he doesn't sell out of anything. If he does their, will be alot of backorders.
HA! 😄
I just wanted to dislike 👎 because of the misleading title of the video but after watching the full video , I love the video so thumbs up 👍.
Thanks for the open mind! 😄
I love you both you both are awesome
Love to you! 🙏🏻
16:53 The Olympics is kinda funny (in a bad way).
There is boxing which you can punch to the face, but you cannot kick.
There is taekwondo, where you cannot punch to the face, but you can kick.
Why not combine both rules and call it Karate. Or more correctly call it Tae Kwon Do, the Way of Hand AND Foot.
Makes sense to me!
Sensei Andy: You’re a little younger than me.
Me: A little?
He’s an old soul. 😁
Sort of an opposite situation but, in a way, similar to maintaining brand. When I was in jail for 15 months (long story, but I prefer to not go into it, not theft, drugs, violence, or sexual, but enough to be arrested and held for, which was triggered by my OCD), brand can be somewhat of a survival tool.
Everybody has probably heard the age old advice of going for the biggest guy and fighting them on the first day so that nobody else will mess with you. That advice never made sense to me, as it turns you into the new biggest guy and now you have others coming after you for the same reason. My family and friends assumed with my martial arts training that I would physically hurt somebody, but instead I tried to be as peaceful and non-antagonizing as possible. Sure there may be one or two who bother you consistently, but I did my best to ignore them.
It was to the point that when I moved to the privileged pods, that one of the guys who had moved there from max told me, "You have this whole tranquility thing going on. I dig it." Ironically, by trying to not stand out and be as unassuming as possible, it actually made me stand out in a good way, as I was selected to be a mentor and granted a few small privileges. Aside from the general card games I played (never gambling, as not only do I dislike gambling, doing so in jail or prison (and yes, those are two very different things) is a very bad idea), I did some work as a scribe, since several inmates were less than literate.
The brand I went for was to be somebody who did not need to be defeated, but rather one to provide assistance if necessary. I rarely displayed any of my skills. The one exception was my hand speed, but only out of boredom and the one guy being really annoying. It was not an attack but to demonstrate how simple it was to deal with his teasing of not only myself, but others as well. When we played Cribbage, one of the rules we had was that the last person who touched the deck was the one who deals. The benefit of that is that dealer gets the crib, for a chance to get additional points. So, we never asked other players to cut, since they would claim the deal that way.
Anyway, the guy would hold the deck out like he was offering it, only to close his top hand down if anybody thought of reaching for it (they usually did so at average speed, being used to other card games, where they would normally cut the deck). So, after dealing with this dumb joke about a dozen times, when he did it again, I just grabbed the deck from like he was a small child. Most of the inmates were in great shape and very muscular, whereas I am fairly unassuming, so they did not expect that level of speed.
Really interesting perspective as always!
@@AndoMierzwa If you ever find yourself in a situation like that, there is an old military maxim you should take to heart - The superior soldier uses his superior judgment to avoid situations which require the use of his superior skill.
@@Bansheexero Great quote!
You mean you want to feed your family and pay your bills? How dare you! I will admit, the first teacher I had, did not charge for lessons, but had no overhead. When I went to other schools, I certainly understood that they would need to charge for lessons in order to maintain the business.
Is it true that Ando Mierzwa writes fortune cookie snippets for extra income?
I don't honestly know but my face hurts from laughing so hard. Not from the content in these videos, but from their open love and fun in sharing. Love and Peace.
Love and peace, indeed! And yes, fortune cookies can make you a fortune!😄
A sell out? No way!
👍🏼
If Jesse is a sellout then every RUclips 'martial arts expert" is also a sellout 🤔. Jesse went to Okinawa to make content to share with his fans. Nothing wrong with that at all
Agreed! Thank you for the comment!
Oh, no....what I got from this is that he sold out, but for all the right reasons. Many sell out for the wrong reasons, and what they have to offer reflects this.
No. jesse is wrong. He is not an immigrant. Finland was a part of Sweden for 700 years.
5% of the population of Finland has swedish as mothertongue. And there are about the same amount of finnish speakers in Sweden. The finns are our brothers and Will allways be welcome. Not as immigrants but as brothers.
Froggy Brothers fight and quarrel at times ...
And Swedish Finnish-speakers have not always been treated nicely.
