Actually a solid point. From what I've seen of boxers, they like to keep their elbows glued to their ribcage and their punches short and to the point. They don't leave room for misdirection.
@@theempressbunny This is why it is important to practice the art of rhythm against a trained boxer. If you've watched a lot of boxing fights then you'll know that one of the ways boxer can win a fight is by changing their rhythm of attack. So rhythm and timing goes hand in hand in my opinion. Defense also has a lot to do with where your body's position and feet are at the moment. Certain types of defensive maneuvers won't work in certain positions. If you train the art of redirection while keeping these things in mind and also spar often with trained boxers, kickboxers and mixed martial artist then it can be effective. If you're thinking that the art of redirection is ineffective then you can watch clips of it working in MMA or do whatever you believe is effecient for proper defense as an alternative.
@@AndoMierzwa Mate, this would never work against a well trained striker. Try moving to the side when a striker like Conor McGregor swings his left hand at you. Keep your hands up, elbows tucked to your body, learn how to slip punches and throw counters.
You can use these tchniqyes as self defence. You dont have to feel like you are bullying. Once you are done with you'r bully. You dont have to do it again
Fighting tips: -If your bully has you pinned up against the wall and is strangling you, keep on kicking them until they stop -If you have sharp nails, scratch them. -Kick them on their private parts -Hit them with hard objects like text books -If they throw a punch, grab their arm and twist it as hard as possible. -Punch them in their stomach -Kick their joints
I just found y'all... I have been in Aikido for 7 years...love it. I like your video... Especially the ending...the ego part. Its so true....kill your ego and be empty.
But...but...but...Sensei Ando, subtle defensive movements and disguised attacks don't look cool in live demos and movies. How will I ever get rich and famous doing this stuff?
Ha! You’re right. No one at the mall will stop to watch your internal prowess. That’s why I always keep cinder blocks and a flame thrower in my trunk. 👊🏼🔥
At the end when y'all talk about not liking the word block reminded me about something. For all the karateka reading, uke(what we use as the word for block) actually means "to receive", because you're not trying to completely block an attack, you're just "receiving" it.
I still prefer not using the opposite hand to block. I did learn this technique early on, but it's better to use the same arm they use, and cross under your other arm to grab the elbow, then pull them forward. You can then throw them to the ground or use that momentum to strike. Maybe it hard to explain, but it puts them off center allowing you many other options. When they strick with their left arm, you block with your left and use your right arm under and around and up to grab their elbow. You can then pull them closer and then use your other arm and step in to put them on the ground or strike, you're choice. I hope this makes sense, I don't have someone to do a video with.
My name is Erin I'm 34 years old I have ADHD I was recently attacked by a woman at work she didn't work for my job that I was working at several months ago and I had to defend myself and I'm proud of myself for being quick enough to respond to the attacker like I did your video taught me how to defend myself
Hello Sensei Ando. I'm a big fan of Martial Arts and I just recently found your channel (and your very insightful podcast). Subscribed! But what I really wanted to know - speaking of not getting hit - is how to effectively dodge attacks. I've been training Muay Thai and dodging seems to never get easier. I mean, throwing punches is so natural, but thinking quick enough to evaluate the speed, direction and trajectory of your opponent's attacks is so difficult! Could you give me your opinion on how to actually get better at dodging? Thank you so much!
Hi Matheus! Thanks for the kind words. And glad you found the podcast! 👍🏼 Be sure to check out the other video I mentioned in this video... I talk more about dodging in that one. The answer boils down to experience. It’s also important to LEAD your opponent into doing what you want. Giving them the freedom to do whatever they want will make defense very difficult. Control the ring!
Im different because the bullys in my school are always targetting smart dudes im one of the smart dudes im not a begginer and my bullys are not asking for money there asking for me to get hurt and im gonna say why i think im not a begginer cause i never get hit (sorry for the bad english)
Teach the same thing in Ninjutsu. No need to waste movement ,move only the few inches required to make the punch miss. Stay facing him and stay close but avoid the fist by moving to the right position. All about angles, footwork and shifting your body . And keep the spine straight. And most importantly never turn your head away, common mistake. Keep your eyes glued on him the whole time. And helps to train slowly and as your timing and perception get better increase the speed of the attacks.
You say let the shoulders do the motion for you, but I say let the shoulders do the motion & bashing simultaneously on your opponent with your shoulders in rotation on creation of developing centrifugal force from one angle to another. I do remember I wrote to you to follow thru my demonstrations of this a long time ago I am only so glad to see you doing so! You should also take care to use my back hand hand grenade exploding into or onto your opponents head & body with snap crackle pop action. And by the way I'd always been the one to say it's better to fight smarter & not harder Than it is to fight on hustle/ muscle! I'm 64 but I'm still able to close the other guy's door! L.O.L Anyway I also developed my own way how to defeat the hands & feet with my own technique. I teach the rodeo bronco buckaroo bag training workout &, the arm lift under over loop smack n whack, sword/arm fighting & fencing skills, how to fight in & around /not in & out like hopalong cassidy or be a bouncing Betty sissy & how to slip n slide in & around not in & out till i'm wore out & or become myself un-anchored or off balance You don't come tipsy toeing in like a ballerina or & bouncing Betty. But you must alway's keep your arms in tight to yourself, cress crossing them back n forth, to twist, spin, jerk, grab n toss. just smash n bash bucking up & down moving in & around while hitting him with your ass, back hips, elbows & shoulders using the back hand hand grenades. Stop running & keep fighting by eliminating his efforts of deciding what he's going to do next. In other words' stop playing his game & fight your own game! Take no shame or blame but leave him in pain! Actually this style can leave you smile as it gives you the advantage to fight in close contact & still not be took back or be it necessary to severely hurt or damage him seriously to injure your opponent if say you don't need or want to destroy him/her but still be it kept easily protective of yourself. On the most part It's kinda like sword fighting, or rodeo bronco buckaroo where you convert yourself into a wild bull stomping mad & bucking him off of you. It just takes redundant practice to develop the right habits & then you'll easily have it! Practice it slow & easy as you go for the power & speed will just come naturally & easily. Only remember a habit is a habit that once you develop it 'you will definitely be stuck to it. develop only the right habits & avoid developing unnecessary bad habits as not be needed! & alway's remember the power & speed will come with it faster than if you rush it for haste only makes waste! Just slow down, take your time & understand your body is like that of a machine that has only so much wear & tear before you lose a gear or two & then your done & thru! Just keep tuned up & know your stuff!, It can & most often will carry you through. I am Sting em dead Dave Overbey & if desired' You can watch me on RUclips' by just typing in only my name.Dave Overbey I am also a good man to keep on hand, Dave the handyman home repair guy w/ doing home rehabs. Some people just don't get the principle of an action and don't understand how it can be more versatile than the word for word description of an action. The base creates the variables. Thanks again for another great video.
I would reccomend that you either avoid it or jam it. You can avoid it by moving out of range or to the side and forward (diagonal), in case its straight both sides work, if it's circular you move the way its not coming. About jamming, if you get close enough, then high kicks just aren't very effective (against low kicks thats a more tricky, but works). I think the avoid or jam idea (or all the way in/all the way out, BUT not in the middle) works against most strikes, actually. There are orher ways, and actually better ways, but that's the one I'm more comfortable with. So, one idea: get out and avoid OR jump in and jam. And counter. As soon as you can. The counter is what stops the combination.
if its leg kick, check it.. if its body kick, check it.. if its arm kick or head kick, lean back.. dont take it full on by using your arms! you'll get dead arms like me!
Excellent video. It seems like it is also easier to just alter a punch slightly. Even if you get struck slightly from a blow, you have eliminated 99% of the damage of the blow.
I wonder, does change the color of gloves give off any advantage? I heard red makes you more attentive, which maybe is why boxing gloves are usually red. but in a real fight you may not have that luxury. What do you guys think? maybe the gear as well maybe one of these newbies mistakes. (i'm not talking about changing the design, obviously they're made for a purpose, but rather the color to make it as skin like as possible)
i think it kinda does, at least for me, if my opponent wear red gloves, my eyes are blinking, but other colors doesn't, i can see the punches come as close as touching my nose without blinking, but red gloves make me blink. anyone else having same exp?
Block with the outermost points that you can, make that a shield, usually forearms, and create space with your feet, get side-on and always keep your guard up and keep upright on your back foot ready to counter. The most important part of your body in a fight if you're right-handed is your right foot. That's your centre of gravity, your hands can take care of themselves if your feet know what to do
large movements are the signs of a beginner who cant fight.. practice more and you'll use smaller movements to get the job done better! less energy wastage too!
Redirecting energy is common in many styles, as it is a super useful way to take easy advantage of physics. I remember learning a lot from my Aikido days; Now though I can only remember all the uke ukemi😅
Sabre fencing is super useful at blocking. I've mentioned it before, but they don't block specific attacks. However, in this case, the stance is a necessary to make this more efficient. L shaped placement of feet, and body leads with the dominant side, so you are standing sideways. It reduces your physical profile down as much as it can to only expose a thin line for the attacker to try to strike. It limits their target area, which helps determine their speed and rhythm as it becomes far more consistent. You guard segments with your defense, essentially blocking any and all of attacks that would target a specific area, rather than micro-managing for specific techniques. Unlike doing this in a normal stance, you don't twist your body at all, you just deflect attacks around your center line, which is your side, rather than broader stances where it becomes your chest. As you block, you can simply step through it to attack immediately. In sabre, you do not cross legs while advancing, nor do you lead with your rear foot (while it is a rule based on banning flesche attacks (sort of a kamikaze rush), it is more efficient to lead with the front foot when advancing and your rear foot when retreating). This leads into that other technique I mentioned, but lack a means of properly recording it due to the limitations of my video recorder. Start by deflecting an attack outward, opening the target area, with the punch missing you but still close to your side. Then in the same motion, you punch forward, as you advance or lunge, with your front foot. Always lead with the hand, not the foot though. You can advance your hand and foot simultaneously though. Fencing is all about removing unnecessary movement and being as efficient as possible. After I started fencing, when I went back to Taekwondo, defending became super, super easy because of how much slower people were (the one exception being my instructor, as he just straight up outclassed me). I'd also point out that you are faster using only one arm than you are trying to defend and attack with both (crossing your body eats up significant time between attacks and blocks. The trick is to produce sufficient power in such quick progressions, but that is where the legs come in, where you draw all your force, rather than simply your upper body. I've knocked people across a room with a fencing punch/thrust. It's not quite the same, but I found a video that might better describe the concept. ruclips.net/video/Y98ukMekKdA/видео.html
Flinching to avoid getting hit is what I’m talking about. Your body is already wired to protect itself if you let it. The trick is staying on offense at the same time!
ando i let the flinch response work to my advantage.. my natural flinch response is to do a hop step back.. when im up against a person who i feel can hurt me with strikes in a sparring, i tend to do the hop step back while extending my hands in a Muay thai long guard position.. it protects me very well! even experienced thai fighters cant hurt me cleanly when i use that technique! however, im unable to hit them as my abilities are no where near them.. i mean if i cant even hit them, i must well not let them hit me either LOL..
Ya know? If only street fighting were in slow motion... Fact is, in a real fight, its all a blur, super fast, all ad lib, all automatic responses. If you have any time to think at all, either you've already won or already lost. Either way, it's already over.

Great advice and completely true I’m only recently moving past a few habits I have had since I first started martial arts and now I am noticing even more lol. Amazing video as always.
Excellent! There's always something to update. That's the bad news and the good news!

Excellent video, thank you both (howdy Sensei Alec!)
I got a whole lot out of this one (I think, anyway ). Reminds me of the old quote "Learn it all, then forget it all. Learn the Way, then find your own way." So here's some lessons I pulled from this: Fine motor skills become more natural in a state of comfort over time (confidence through repetition and experience ); When you forego your wants and attend to your needs, self defense becomes simplified and energy flows more fluid (less effort more effectiveness). Wants and needs are akin to being, respectively, emotionally reactive vs. intellectually responsive.
I really like (paraphrasing) be comfortable here, with less panic you will breathe, see and feel better what's going on, the clarity of your "needs" are made manifest in the moment, so comfort equates to self-trust...but beware of the ego (Fight your ego!). I hope I'm not taking liberties in interpreting this lesson; If I am misunderstanding I apologize and invite your correction.
Thank you for another great video!
I/We appreciate all the kind words! Your interpretation sounds right on the mark. Keep up the good work! Thank you! 🙏🏻
Now try this against an uncooperative boxer.
Try anything against an uncooperative anybody!

Mate, this would never work against a well trained striker. Try moving to the side when a striker like Conor McGregor swings his left hand at you. Keep your hands up, elbows tucked to your body, learn how to slip punches and throw counters.

-If your bully has you pinned up against the wall and is strangling you, keep on kicking them until they stop
-If you have sharp nails, scratch them.
-Kick them on their private parts
-Hit them with hard objects like text books
-If they throw a punch, grab their arm and twist it as hard as possible.
-Punch them in their stomach
-Kick their joints

At the end when y'all talk about not liking the word block reminded me about something. For all the karateka reading, uke(what we use as the word for block) actually means "to receive", because you're not trying to completely block an attack, you're just "receiving" it.
Exactly right! Thank you for the comment!
Also, going for the face first is a beginner move ... go for the mid abdominal area... or hit the spleen.

I am honored to have you here, Anshika! 🌈🙏🏻💙
Makes sense. Prepare for everything!

Oh, I see! I'll watch the video you recommended. Thanks a lot for the tips!

I appreciate the comment. Thank you! 🙏🏻

Please add a video on blocking kicks because that's the thing I need to improve
P.S knocked out by a kick 😛
Knocked out? Sorry about that! 😳 The same principles will apply, but it’s still a good idea for a video. Thanks!
Beta blockers... Lol
Excellent video. It seems like it is also easier to just alter a punch slightly. Even if you get struck slightly from a blow, you have eliminated 99% of the damage of the blow.
Strive for efficiency, yes.

Swat the punch? Pfffft I tank it
Me too I just take it and counter
Block with the outermost points that you can, make that a shield, usually forearms, and create space with your feet, get side-on and always keep your guard up and keep upright on your back foot ready to counter. The most important part of your body in a fight if you're right-handed is your right foot. That's your centre of gravity, your hands can take care of themselves if your feet know what to do
Thanks for the tips! 🙏🏻

so... sorry for the dumb qestion, but how do I this apply when fighting a small pack of people? Large movements kinda help me dealing with the mob....

large movements are the signs of a beginner who cant fight.. practice more and you'll use smaller movements to get the job done better! less energy wastage too!

Thanks for the link!
Blocks are not instinctual at al. Just watch a begginer spar in boxing for the first time
Flinching to avoid getting hit is what I’m talking about.
That’s what training is for, I reckon...to build better automatic reactions! Happy training!
Thank you Im gonna practice this now!
Cool! Happy training!👍🏼
