New Bujinkan Soke - Some Thoughts

  • The head of our Bujinkan organization, Hatsumi Soke, is the inheritor of nine Japanese martial lineages (ryuha). Recently, he decided to break up these ryuha by appointing new Soke for each one. This is something unprecedented (that I'm aware of) and a very significant event. The depth involved in passing such an honor cannot be overstated. The Bujinkan is truly evolving into a new phase and we are all witnessing history in the making.
    However, as significant and incredible this is, there is also a lot of misunderstanding and even controversy. People try to predict what will happen, wonder if there will be an actual Soke of the Bujinkan named, and so on. But, the truth is that we have no place to expect anything or make any demands. Yes, there is still a Soke of the Bujinkan and his name is Masaaki Hatsumi. He also is still the Soke of all nine ryuha. That has never changed. In fact, the Bujinkan Hombu office still processes ranking certificates and prior to COVID-19, the Hombu Dojo had classes taught by several of the Dai-Shihan. Once things open back up, I am confident those new Soke will continue to teach Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu at the Hombu. That will not change.
    In this video, I provide my insights regarding the awarding of new Soke, what I think this means for all of us, and I offer my tips on how to move forward individually and as a community. It is truly an exciting time to be in the Bujinkan!

    He’s giving a portion of the 9 schools to each of the best of the best and loved in the bujinkan. The master now see the 9 seeds lovingly sown. May they grow and flourish. Thanks 😊

    The Bujinkan is an organization just as Kodokan is an organization. It just so happens that Bujinkan has several schools within its organization. Each ryu-ha within Bujinkan can have its own soke. This is not controversial nor "outside the box". Menkyo Kaiden is a title of mastery of the art. Generally the soke of an art has menkyo kaiden, but not always the case. Since the soke is more of an organizational leader, there have been rare instances where a soke may not be the best and most technically adept of the group. Sometimes the best or most experienced is also the oldest and, thus, not the best choice to provide organizational continuity for the next 20 or 30 years. Or, the current soke of an art knows he/she is his final years and passes on the day-to-day leadership to someone younger. In any case, I think Van Donk has given the best perspective of what Hatsumi did.

    When I heard about it I thought it was a great idea for Reviving the Individual RYU HA and ensuring they are properly trained. Give them to the person that best represents them with their training. Great idea. It should actually REVIVE the whole Bujinkan.

      Doesn't the Jinenkan already do that ? They are pretty darn strict about the Kata and maintaining the old school way of doing things.

    Does bunjinkan have kicks and punches as well as weapons?

    • @shinobiwolf
      @shinobiwolf  3 года назад +5

      Of course! The order of training is to develop the taijutsu, the body mechanics, which includes specific ways to punch and kick. Then the various weapons, which are extensions of the taijutsu. Same platform, different applications.

    I'm always a bit astounded at the lengths that members of the Bujinkan twist themselves into to explain things they clearly don't understand... The very idea of "soke" is very much a business one... it was developed to basically act as a "copyright" holder of a particular art in a domain, and gave the holder of the title all licensing and teaching rights in the area... for very much commercial reasons. The idea of "splitting soke" is not "unique", look to Shindo Muso Ryu, for example, where licensing in the various fuzoku ryu-ha were given to different individuals; or to Hyoho Niten Ichi Ryu, where the 8th Soke was also head of a line of Sekiguchi Ryu, but that was split off after his time. Next, the idea that these new "soke" would still say that Hatsumi is "still soke" is ridiculous... if they do, then they haven't been awarded soke yet.. if they have, then Hatsumi is no longer soke of those schools. He's the former soke. Then, the idea that "these new soke won't be teaching only these lineages, they'll continue to teach Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu" is utterly undercutting the very idea of giving them the soke title in the first place... if they're not teaching and licensing in the school they are responsible for, then what's the point of them being soke? Finally, the Bujinkan has never really taught any of the ryu-ha... it has taught Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu, which is drawn from, but is not actually any of the schools themselves... which is the real issue. These new "soke" are so in name only... they are soke of schools that have not been taught, and they are not passing on themselves. It's utterly pointless, and is only there to stop Hatsumi's power from being diluted at the end of his career... if he appointed a single new soke, that person would be the new go-to... so, to avoid that, he splits the titles up, keeping him on top. Oh, and there is no such thing as the "soke of the Bujinkan"... it's not a ryu-ha, it's an organisation (well, originally a building...)... so you can have a president of the Bujinkan, or a Kancho of the Bujinkan, which is what he is, but not a "soke" of it. So much wrong in this video, and so much twisting to make excuses for what is simply a bizarre situation done for ego alone...

      Spot on! I didn't know BJK did gymnastics due to all the mental gymnastics done to explain why "X" thing is done differently. It boils down to backtracking, retcon previous stated facts or just "made up things"

    Japanese training schools are/were businesses - it is only modern employee and government wage collectors that think businesses should be/are well organized well packaged etc.
    Hatsumi soke did unusual thing because everyone else's schools shrunk until they became foreign federation sports. Others didn't do it because they couldn't.
    Only wage servants think that businesses aren't personal- which is why the heart in our cultures is rotting.

    We can all agree that the Bujinkan is complete nonsense. Everyone knows this. What is hard is for people who have dedicated themselves to it, to step away and look at it from a outside viewpoint. Instead they will defend it and Hatsumi because it is human nature to do so.
