Amazing how high you can set the HPF on all these instruments and still have them sound so full. Beatiful sounding demo!
Wow, I was immediately blown away by the sound and your musicality. Well done and thank you so much! This was super helpful. All the best
Thank you so much Terry!
Wow! Sounds amazing and even with stacking all those tracks it just was more and more amazing!
Thank you! :) it’s a great unit.
First! I'm your channels biggest fan man. You need to release more of these sir. The presentation and music is top notch.
Thanks so much!!
Wow! First off, you rock. Great songwriting, you killed the performance on everything, and the mix was great!
Thank you so much Jordan!
Such a good channel. Hope you can keep making them
Thank you Musa! :)
Very well done, Alec. I have the Daking mic pre one and love it, for the reasons you mention, but I would rather comment about your excellent song. Well sung, well performed, very tasteful arrangement, expertly produced... It reminded me of the music of a Canadian artist I like called Ron Sexsmith. Keep it up!
Thank you so much for the kind words! :)
Very smooth in the high end. Solid throughout the rest of the frequency range.
Fully agree. 👌🏽
What a ridiculously great demo..
Thank you so much Sean! :)
Great demo!
Thanks so Bobby. :)
Bro this song is lit af bruh good job man
Thank you so much Dirty Red! :)
I bought one of these because the engineer I work with loves using these pres for vocals. I bought the transformer version. It’s awesome how the sounds stacks up on this recording. Great songs you’re producing too!
Thanks so much! :) congrats on your purchase.
Very nice song, made my day! great job my friend
Thank you sir!! :)
again great reviews! and for a suggestion I'd love to hear your thoughts on the tree audio branch ii :)
Thanks!! Ooo, yes, I’ll see if it’s possible to get one in.
This is the video that basically has made my decision as far as my first outboard purchase, thanks for the help! Also give us an EP or something lolol
Thank you so much! :)
Yes! Working on it!
@@alecbrits dude I can’t wait, you earned a sub with this one! I’d love to hear you try out some CAPI pres if you could ever get them loaned to you or something
"The green faceplate with the weird logo"... That's exactly it! Thanks again for a great video. Very informative and entertaining, as always with you. And since you ask about gear we might want to see tested, well, if you haven't tested the API 2500+ compressor, I'd love to see what you think about it!
I’d love to get a 2500 test on the go in here. Would be a lot of fun! :)
@@alecbrits Between the three knees, three sidechain eqs, stereo variable coupling, fully variable auto realeases, parallel and cross "dry/wet" you'd have a handfull. Oh did I mention the FF/FB? (and btw in FB mode, it's the only compressor that feedbacks AFTER the gain makeup. I know it's weird... Check the schematics!) 🙂
@@alecbrits btw, since you tested 2 channel strips, one could say you're halfway there! The API and "Britstrip" are awayting you (and us)... 😉
So, I'm confused now as to whether why I'm here - like is it for the Daking Mic Pre-II review or to hear that amazing performance. 😅 Also, mate you are one gorgeous chap 😉🥺🥰 Oh, and I'm not sure why I'm not subscribed yet. Also, shoutout to the marvelous and wonderful people at StudioCare 👍
So many lovely words there! Thank you so much DFPH!! :)
Great review. Daking gear is first rate and competes with Neve and API👍✌️ Use them all the time here..
Thank you Dan! :) I do miss having them around here.
Did not want to like this song but you had me once the harmonies came in. Beautiful lyrics, great tune.
Thank you so much!
Your music is nice Alec and it's great to hear reviews on these pres. The only thing that I would recommend is perhaps to hear some of these instruments isolated a bit more, and totally dry. That way we could get a little better perspective on the sound of the pres. Thanks
Thanks so much Damion, I will be offering that later this year. :)
👏👏👏
This was a great review man - amazing song writing and production. How would you compare the Daking Pre compared to those on the 1073OPX? 4 of these to get 8 pre's would cost the about the same as the OPX so am interested to hear your thoughts on that
Good Question Jason! I think they are rather similar really, the Daking and the Neve are open and solid. I think the form factor and flexibility in the Neve allows it to edge forward in my mind a little.
I'd go neve in that situation bro. The neve has alot of functionality and the ability to remote control it is huge. Especially for a midsized studio.
I saw Warren huart do a demo where he had the opx in the live room and remote controlled it from the control that's a big deal
Superb ☺😚
Thanks Paul! :)
Very warm is what I’m getting
Absolutely. :)
Would love to hear your take on the new Heritage Elite series. Maybe the EQ version - HA73EQ vs the Neve SPX (also smt and more affordable).
I’ll see what I can do, I’m going to be reviewing my 1073DPX soon, so I’m sure that will help your choices. :)
Well done! :-)
Thanks again John! :)
Daking design the pre using the circuit of a legendary trident console.
And it sounds ace! :)
Hi Alec, i love your videos and music. i think you do everything rigth in your videos =) I'll really love if you do some AB comparison. For example: Neve 1073DPX/ Daking mic pre. Just to be able to hear they diference, and not nesesary to say wich is the "best" ;-)
greetings from Berlin
Thanks Jimmy! I’ll try my best to figure out a good and accurate way to sort that out!
Thanks for this great video, Alec. Would you use this to track drums rather than the Neve 1073? I am going to buy a 4 ch preamp and I'll be tracking drums in the same room. I see how straight forward the daking is (or the sebatron as well but it's a tube preamp) and I'm a bit concerned on how dialing input and output could be difficult without a real control room. Any advice would be super helpful. Thanks
Hi Roberto!
I think for Drums the Neve’s are a little more forgiving. When the Daking reaches a clipping point the distortion that happens is not particularly flattering, but it is a great open tone. More open than the neves I would say. As someone who records myself a lot, figuring out input and out gains takes the same amount of time as just having to dial in an input gain. You will need to listen and adjust after a take or two to make sure the level of saturation that is desired is being achieved, as well as the mic placement. So a little more time in the setup will save a lot of time in the mix. The other side of it is the investment side, if you purchase Neve outboard, it will retain its value should you want to sell it in the future!
@@alecbrits thanks a lot for the answer.
AEA rpq, daking mic pre and Neve 1073 cover from as clean and precise to as thick and heavy as I want to go with a mic pre. I can accomplish anything else I'm interesting in changing outside of a mic pre.
Good advice there Timothy! :)
Great channel! You’re very talented and you should definitely release your own music.
Question: how did you deal with the lack of an output trim? What happens when you dial in the perfect sound, but the output is too hot for an Apollo x8?
Thanks very much Greg!
I would have very much preferred to have an output trim on the unit, but in reality it was not that much of a big deal.
When the Daking was driven, I was not the biggest fan of the clipping/distortion. However, they have just released a new version with an output transformer, that looks like something that I would very much like to drive. :)
@@alecbrits Thanks for your quick reply. Keep up the good work!
PS: Avedis Audio MA5 preamp review?
Ooo, very curious about the avedis pieces!!
Hello my friend, what are your thoughts about the compressor that apearse on the video. Did the tracks go through it?
Hey Aleks, I did get to try it, but not enough to have given an in depth review sadly. It’s not on any of the stems you hear on the demonstration. That is only the Daking mic pre, no eq, no compression.
Curious what you would prefer if you had to choose between having this or the neve 88m.
Depends on workflow really. :) the Daking is not an interface. I do really like the sound of the Daking, so if I’m looking for a pre, this one would be high up on the list. :)
Sounds amazing. Reminds me of Local Natives!
Thanks so much Jared! :)
do a review on daking comp 2 video i just subed
It’s in the rack review is coming soon!
@@alecbrits thanks i highly appreciated it
how do you feel about this pre vs the Cranborne?
Tough choice! But the Cranborne allows for more tonal choices. :)
IS THERE A POWER BUTTON ON THIS UNIT?
Seems like there is not one! :)
Do you still use it?
It was a review unit :) I had it for a few weeks. Was a great piece of kit.
Great video but I completely disagree no one tries to keep this company's products a secret if anything they say it's surprising they aren't more prominent. Regardless, wonderful sounding song.
Thanks for the feedback! :)
What is dakings
Daking is a company that makes pro audio equipment. :) named after Geoff Daking.
Almost as good as the Daking mic/pre/eq
Their EQ’s are magic. :)
@@alecbrits Powerful eq's yeah
why are you doing demos,.
Not sure what you mean? I really enjoy the gear and like sharing the sound of pieces of kit in a way that is not common on RUclips. :)
@@alecbrits your great, seem too good to be wasting your time with demos when you could be doings shows.
