    Does an $800 Made in the USA preamp perform well? It has 70dB of gain, a variable high pass filter, a noise floor comparable to interfaces that have an EIN of ~ -127dBA, and it's built like a tank. It performs very well, but is it worth it for the price?

    Now for the important stuff. What a gorgeous interlude you played for us. The music you compose and perform as an ‘added value’ to your reviews is like buying a nice pair of shoes and getting a valet to come home and put them on and take them off for you.

    Wow, your music tests keep getting more stunning with every video!
    This is one of two preamps I have had my eyes on for a will, with the other one being the focusrite ISA One. It would be phenomenal to see you comparing those two. You make the best audio gear reviews on this platform.
    It would really help me out.

      not likely in a mix will you
      hear a difference but the isa (i have 6 ch of this) is crazy extra amount of gain. good for room mics / ribbons / maybe quit stuff like outside sounds in the beiakyard. sometimes weird to get the right amount of gain (design is kinda different)

    I owned this for a few months and recorded half a record with it. It's very hi-fi, the top end is open but not harsh, and it loves condensers. Very good with all D.I. signals, too. They have some of the best customer service I've seen too.

    You need to get a Ted Fletcher made pre, too. The guy is single handedly making some of the purest mic pres ever made. He's a little know secret here in the UK, and is probably open to talking to you about them too. He came off the back of the Joe Meek pres that were made in the 80s and 90s.

    Brother Bandrew. BB King ! I've done dozens of recordings over the last ten years with the Daking Mic Pre One and wanted to give my two cents. First off, I noticed in your video, you bring attention to the wiggle room present where the cable connects to the power supply. I had never noticed this but checked my own unit and sure enough there is some play in that connection. I want all your viewers to know that IMHO this should in no way present itself as any type of concern or play a role in a decision making process which prevents one from picking up this unit. The Daking Mic Pre One rocks. I love it. It has served me so well over the years and I have been extremely happy with it. In my experience, my favorite application for this preamp is for electric guitar - micing up guitar cabinets. It's warm, sweet, natural, organic.... I love this piece of gear and have been very satisfied with it over the years. Thanks man.

    Really really cool test. I think this video is an incredible example of the "stacking" effect of something like a preamp. The difference may be subtle on a single track, but when that (what sort of feels like a very very gentle saturation or even compression) is stacked in a recording with many tracks, it becomes abundantly clear how much of an effect just a single dedicated preamp can have in the recording process.
    With all of that being said, that 2i2 sounds very very nice considering the difference in price-point and utility of these two units.
    It also goes to show how far good microphones, recording technique, and performance go in a final product. No mic preamp, microphone, outboard gear, etc., will save you if you aren't getting something good at the source.
    I recently picked up a Focusrite ISA One--I'd love to see a comparison between the Daking and the ISA. It was a very tough choice between the two, so I'd be curious to hear your A/B to see if I'd regret my decision! So far I'm loving it.

  • @7171jay
    @7171jay 3 месяца назад

    @Podcastage You could run an in line pad between the Daking and the 18i so you could crank the gain a bit and see what kind of character could be gotten out of the Daking. Shure makes a nice variable pad (the A16AS) which runs about $50. Unless you can get a little character out of an external micpreamp I think there is little value over an interface that has a good mic input.

    I think it definitely sounds clean! Compared to the stock preamps, it adds _maybe_ 5-10% more articulation/ detail and slightly “tighter” bass (maybe). As you mentioned, it doesn't sound _drastically_ different. Whether that justifies $800 is entirely up to the end user, I suppose. If you're doing more preamp reviews, I would love to see you tackle the Cranborne Camden EC1.
    Cheers! And thanks for another great video :D

    Mic pres are gonna be REALLY hard to review on the tubes. Here's how I would describe Daking to MOTU pres (my current interface and really good): it's like the difference between an SM57 and an Beyer M201.
    Daking is my fav pre... it's also a killer bass di. Great on drums. Yes, the power cable is shitty and the HPF is AMAZING. I use neve when I need "cocaine cowboy". I also have API pres but need to sell... I always pick the Daking over the API.

  • @meistudiony
    @meistudiony 3 месяца назад +2

    Doobalee did! Never been a big fan of daking. The ones ive used were very dark (i think they were germanium) and a tad noisy at higher gain settings. (Kind of expected). This seems a little more neutral. 70db is respectable. Preamps are funny things. We have 10 neve pres and theyre all in the ballpark with one another but none are dead on exact tonally. Again with the amazeballs music test. Was hoping for a crazy drop and then full on heavy part… maybe next time. Lol. Great vid as always.

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  3 месяца назад +1

      Thanks so much Pags. It's interesting to hear your experience with the other Daking stuff (which I haven't tried). I have only tried one Germanium device and it was a Fathead Germanium and the noise was abysmal on it so I just stopped using it. It seems like that variability or tonal character is what preamps really offer nowadays; something to add imperfections to the sterile sound we get from completely flat preamps found in our audio interfaces.

    • @meistudiony
      @meistudiony 3 месяца назад +5

      @@PodcastageGermanium transistors are not quiet in any device they're in, but they offer harmonic content that other transistors don't. My thoughts on "color" pres has waxed and waned over the years, which is why my mic locker is so full. Sterile pre's aren't a bad thing (to me), in fact I rather prefer it for many things. Certainly testing mics is one of them. There are times where the microphone itself has such a unique character that can take care of the coloration on its own. In some cases, for instance, take a Rode NT1 (very bright mic) and pair that with a dark pre like one of the dakings or a Joe Meek VC1 and you end up with a well balanced sound that can work well in a lot of situations. Take that same pre with a really dark mic like an old ribbon and you have a muddy mess. After going down the impedance rabbit hole, I've found myself gravitating to pres that offer multiple choices of impedance as that can influence the tonal color more than anything. (lower impedance can choke the bottom end of a mic while higher impedance will open a mic's response tremendously. It can also seemingly effect the mic's sensitivity to a degree as well (because of the tonal shift mainly). Sorry for the book here.

    Some very nice features here. Variable HPF is the only way to go. Selectable freqs always leave me wanting something else. The ramped 48v is also a very graceful feature every mic amp in the world should have. Sound? It’s fine.

    Excellent review!!!
    The pre definitely sounds better than the Scarlett. I thought it sounded good on the instruments. For DI it really is hard to justify $800 that is as transparent as it is.
    The UA sounded better but it also colored the sound. Same with the WA. Both of those are similar in price to the Daking.
    Given its transparent sound, I assume it doesn’t have a transformer in it.
    Fantastic musical performance btw!

    You mentioned Colour Box in the video. Do you happen to have a JHS Colour Box Preamp on hand to test it in this same way?
    If so, how does it compare to this preamp? Ive heard that it produces quite a clean signal and it also offers extra features.
    Just curious if it's this kind of clean signal capable.
    Just realized the Colour Box doesnt have phantom power... that's bummer. But if you're running it into a USB interface or mixer, it's gonna have that anyway. So though it's a comparable piece of equipment, it does lack that function and also has less gain on tap. Maybe makes up for it with the other additional features? Hmmmm...
    Any thoughts?

    The only place I really heard any difference was on the bass, probably because bass is my principle instrument so I know it well. It seems to have more bass response than the scarlet, a little denser feeling.
    Interesting that the noise seems to peak around 60hz, and the power supply seems to be a bit of a weak point, especially with the loose jack. I do wonder if you replaced the power supply with something nicer if that would clean up a little. I also wonder if the jack being loose means that it's not grounded well and that's the source of that noise profile. Might be worth getting in touch with them about.
