Love this movie. As a black man I appreciate how we were portrayed in this movie

I’m a Black woman born and raised in NYC since the late 80s, so a lot of the discussions surrounding post-Reagonomics, police brutality and forced gentrification resonated with me. However, this was not a great film. There was no real plot, and it was difficult to empathize with the Inez character at times because she expected so much from Terry, not realizing he was just a child. She saw herself in him, so perhaps she was also a child brought up in a system where she was forced to grow up fast and deal with trauma differently…. I wish the director started the movie off showcasing Inez during her formative years at least, so that we can get that perspective.
I’ve met people like Inez and Terry, who end up falling through the cracks of the underserved populations in NYC. I had high hopes for the director to tackle the portrayal of these people. Unfortunately, this ain’t it. I spent the entirety of the film rolling my eyes or looking at my watch, waiting for it to end.

I loved the poignant discourse the director offered with this short statement: “Nobody gives a fcuk about Black women except other Black women and even that gets messy at times”.
      So true.

Nicely worded, thank you. I saw it yesterday at BAM. If this is not the best film I've seen in years, I don't know what is. I can't get it outta my mind, Though I'm partial... I'm a local kid myself. Props!

I absolutely loved this film. The acting, cinematography, script, and score were just chef’s kiss imo. This movie deserves to be an awards darling. Kudos to A.V. Brockwell and everyone from Teyana to Will, entire cast and crew. Y’all have outdone yourselves. Shoutout to one of my favorite creators Lena Waithe for producing and giving black creators a lane to continue to thrive ✊🏾

A damn good movie reminds me of the movie Moonlight but with a crazy ass twist at the end.

YES!!! Definitely gave me Moonlight vibes. It’s the cinematography & the storyline a bit for me that reminded me of how similar they seem. Very beautiful!

Im definitely going to go see it. When I first saw the trailer I was like ooo that looks good. I hope Teyana gets all the awrds she deserves in the acting world, cuz they played her in the music world by not giving her her flowers. And i don't appreciate it 😒

I can’t put respect on your name if you can’t see that the ending was lacking. There was no wrapping up of the story. They showed him wanting to date the girl only for her to move to FL…which is fine but how do we know more about her ending then we do Inez or Terry’s. If the ending would have given some closer to Inez & Terry it’s a A+ but other wise it’s a C-/D+ rating for me. Which sucks because Tiana acted her ass off in this film

Just seen the in my City. All I can say, it's a very good Film and everyone did a great acting job. Truely Real Timepiece Film of NYC! It was touching and emotional! Ms. Taylor, Lucky and the Son put their heart and soul into this film. Loved the Soundtrack Score too. This movie does addresses gentrification that has hit places like NYC, D.C. and Other Large Cities. I definitely won't forget this film. Great Soundtrack!

Thank you for this review! I've been waiting to hear someone's opinion on this movie for like a month now. One thing I can say...RUclips has been running the promo for this movie like crazy, and that's not always the case for a predominantly black cast. Love that for all involved.🤎

THATS WHAT I WANTED TO KNOW… WHAT WAS THAT SMURK ABOUT AT THE END… AND WHEN HE KEPT SAYING I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU MA… SHE DIDNT EVEN TELL HIM SHE LOVES HIM BACK. ALL SHE SAID WAS I THINK YOU SHOULD GO…

    • @nathanjohnson3329

In my opinion, Inez did say in the end, that she won because she knew Terry was gonna grow up and be somebody. She gave him what she never had so he could be what she couldn't be. Maybe that's what her smile represented..

Well, she explained it to him at the end. She saw him wandering outside a shelter unsupervised and stayed with him for hours, and no one ever came for him. So she took him in "to protect him" since obviously no one cared.

Your review was excellent. I felt the movie had too much profanity. The constant F Bombs were unnecessary. The drama at the end was too much. They could've worked things out. Nevertheless, the film was excellent.
