    Wow! Wonder if you still have that Chaucer 3+ years later? I know that fear you spoke of, I'm feeling it. "Bitcoin, silver and books"...one more asset you didn't mention. Love your enthusiasm.

    The Chaucer is fantastic! Whatever you paid for it, I’m sure you got a good deal. Something like that elevates your whole collection/inventory. That’s also a great copy of the first of A Moveable Feast, one of Hemingway’s best reads. I’ve got one of Scribner Mag’s issues with an installment of Farewell to Arms. Got it about ten years ago and unfortunately haven’t come upon another installment, but I’ve got mags with works by Whitman, Robert Frost and Faulkner, among others, with the best the first publication of The Snows of Kilimanjaro in a 1930’s Esquire. Enjoyed this very much! Best wishes from Fort Worth, Texas!

    Phil you really enjoyed that auction, your energy was just going through the roof. And yes that Chaucer was exceptional. Would definitely contact the Jesuits to see if their interested in that set.

    Great buys , Man! I picked up "A Moveable Feast " copy last summer at an Estate sale that was no where close to that condition. Most of the sourcing I do for books are the online auctions around here, so I know what it's .like to get carried away in the moment. Keep an eye out for "Hemingway Reviews". They bring good money if you can get them cheap.

      Will do thanks for the tip! Yeah I may do a couple more or at least monitor ones I like, I just get so many coming in the door or going to picks I don't really need to, nor have the time but boy was it fun! Thanks for checking the video out Jim!

    Why is this Chaucer work considered rare or a find? Chaucer was commonly printed at that time. He died in 1440. 1721 is not too old in book collecting. What is important is the actual volume, desirability, condition. I have incunabula (two) which cost me all of a few thousand dollars about 20 years ago in Europe. The places I was visiting had thousands of books from the 1500, 1600, and 1700 for a few dollars each. Thanks for sharing your work and experience. I subscribed.

      Well for one it's a gorgeous folio filled with wood cuts and copper illustrations. Also for the first time some of his unpublished works are in this book. I believe it's also one of the first types the type of print was used. It's just a beautiful book, held and bound well!

    Ahhh...so YOU'RE the guy who was bidding up the lots! haha I was following that auction and was going to go to the preview on Sunday morning (I'm about an hour away in New Hampshire) but decided not to go at the last minute...too bad, I coulda' said 'hey'! That was a great auction, but the prices were just sooo sky-high for most of the lots. Did you happen to win the "Last Men of the Revolution" book? That's the book I was after. Congrats on the Chaucer...what a beautiful book - that was one of the highlights of the auction for sure!

    • @thebookpeddler
      @thebookpeddler  3 года назад

      🤣 ya know I remember you commenting on one of my videos that you were from New Hampshire, that woulda been cool. Yeah you're right on the lots, they went high, I won 8, 5 out of them I got the lots for what I wanted but yeah went over my established numbers for the other 3. The Revolution book was definitely one I wanted, I bid with it up a ways but then let it go... that was a special book, I think after losing that one it made me not want to lose the Chaucer all the more. - man the buyer premiums were high too! But exceptional books! Thanks for watchin Craig, if I'm in your next of the woods again I'll drop a line!

    Sorry... just found your video! The bookplate in the Chaucer book (hope you've sold it by now) has the name of Harold Jefferson Coolidge who was a prominent lawyer and was great great grandson of Thomas Jefferson and also a distant relative of President Calvin Coolidge!! Sometimes bookplates are as interesting as the book! Chaucer was the father of English literature and the last great writer to come before the printing press... his works were handwritten and hand-copied (manuscript form)!!

      That's really awesome information and thanks for information! The Chaucer book is the only purchase I made that day that I had yet put out on the market, so it's really great of you to share that information, thank you so much! If I do decide to put it up here before Christmas I'll definitely be adding that to the description! Thanks again, Phil
