Is anyone old enough to remember when police officers, (yes, back then it wasn't cops unless you were shady), were like knighted protectors? They would walk down the street and people said hello and they knew most of the people on their beat and were respected. The rarely paid checks at diners and restaurants because businesses knew that they kept the area safe so people could walk the streets to get to their place. Children looked up to them as heroes and dreamed of one day being a police officer too. It sounds corny but that's how it was. They actually helped and cared about their community. Now, and I don't place the blame on cops entirely, it's considered a business with budgets, bottom lines, quotas to meet and bean counters that tell how much needs to be generated per month or quarter to maintain the business. So reactions and compliance from citizens that were earned through mutual respect, are now still expected and when not given, are demanded and citizens are still expected to comply even though it's a direct violation of the constitutional and inalienable rights. *steps down off of soap box*

There’s probably an ordinance against having an open container in a public park. The officers probably could have pressed the issue but this guy isn’t worth the paperwork.

Police officers approach toward this guy was unlawful. You suppose to say sir I will have to issue you a citation for drinking in public ( if it was obvious that it was alcohol based off the circumstances such as alcohol odor on him or if he had slurred speech which he did not. .) They're search would have been illegal search at the highest level of an illegal search. Based off the questioning of the officers its obvious that he did not have a alcohol container with the alcohol brand name label on it. So the officers did the right thing by walking away, everyone is human and everyone gets nervous and makes mistakes.

When the citizens are armed with knowledge, and everything's on camera, the cops chose not to break the law. They still pushed the limitations, but they eventually left. So what we need to do is arm the citizens with knowledge and cameras. Thank you for doing that, brother. Respect.
Even better, require that all police wear untamperable body cameras and microphones at all times. Whenever all the police in a department are required to wear cams and mics, use of force incidents drop through the floor. The same holds true for citizen complaints. Community relations improve, crime rates drop, and people respect the police more when their actions are recorded by objective means instead of the neverending fucking lies they write on their reports. Additionally, actual criminal offenses are prosecuted more thoroughly with fewer lenient plea bargains when DAs know they have hard, nondebatable evidence to make their case, and fewer he said/she said cases are prosecuted when the recorded facts don't line up with the skewed version of the truth that always seems to find its way onto the police reports.

Cop shoots man in the back! Tail light stop! Camera 100 yards away. Cop posted his report before the video hit RUclips. The rest is history! The broken oath is the norm at many police departments.
