    This is a really interesting insight into the world of remakes. Starting from the beginning and covering how gamer's favorite nostalgia trips came to be. Getting multiple perspectives for this type of thing is the only way to do it. As Kevin put it, "There's not a single rule." And so many people like, or dislike, these types of games for so many different kinds of reasons. Great job on shedding light on the different ways people consume this popular and essential piece of gaming media.

    I’ve always felt like it’s pretty easy to distinguish three types of RE-games. But it’s gotten more and more difficult to figure it out this generation. Final Fantasy Rebirth is a reimagining. Resident Evil 2-4 are somewhere between remake and reimagining. Resident Evil 1 on the GameCube is an outright remake but even that has new monsters, new areas, and new mechanics. And then there’s a remaster which for all intent and purpose is a port with graphical upgrades. But now we’ve got stuff like The Last of Us, where I’m not even sure the developer knows if it’s a remake or a remaster. And gamers DEFINITELY don’t know.

      feels like the distinction becomes harder to make with the games thats purpose is less understandable imo. like tlou is confusing because they added onto it to give people a reason to rebuy rather than revisiting the game because their were inherent reasons to do so

    I feel like The Last of Us Part 1 ruined the gaming community's preception of remakes. That was such a confusing decision to remake a game already playable on the PS5 so that it would look slightly better.
    But most instances of remaking a game are effective in revitalising an IP or shining a light on an old classic. The team that made the Live A Live and Dragon Quest III remakes still puts out original games like Octopath Traveller and Triangle Strategy.

      funnily enough, the 1st time i remember being annoyed by a remaster is the OG TLOU being remastered for PS4. it was insane to me that their public reasoning was to allow more people to experience the game when PS3 sold over 80m units

      @@WatchReDirect Reminds me of when Scott the Woz said people were mad at Tomb Raider definitive edition for some reason. Even though it wasn't a game playable on modern consoles.

      @WatchReDirect The PS4 was released about month after the og and wasnt backwards compatible. So i think it was fair for it to be rereleased. A lot of people probablu jumped from xbox 360 to PS4 and were unable to play the origional

    This was so insightful! So many questions lead to answers for things I hadn’t ever considered, like the question about having newer hires work on remakes/remasters. Just really good discussions all around.

      thanks, trev! yeah i’m really happy with both conversations. wayforward seemed pretty happy about it as well, they offered to give interviews for future videos whenever i need so that should be hype depending on the topic. very good studio to have a connection with i think

    Great video and slick transition to the merch. It's cool to get a few different looks on remakes/reboot/ports other than "remake bad"

      thank you! & agreed. i think it's a dishonest take because even before i did this video i knew there was always a chance that most long standing devs/publishers would be able to announce SOME type of remake that i'd be excited for.

    There's a recent colossal cave VR recreation, that I guess Roberta Williams of Sierra is mainly responsible for.
    I've seen no coverage or opinions about it whatsoever lol

    They are absolutely a bad thing with how they’re currently handled as a replacement for the original rather than a complement.

    • @WatchReDirect
      @WatchReDirect  27 дней назад

      would you say they are ALWAYS treated like that? because from my pov they run the gamut also in many cases the original is unattainable for various reasons. does that change anything for you on a case by case basis?

    Remasters are perfectly fine if you can't play the game on current gen hardware or if the game is multiple generations old with no ease of access such as digital purchase or the game is so old the graphics look terrible on current tvs

    • @WatchReDirect
      @WatchReDirect  Месяц назад

      agreed! i think there’s other reasons for them too but there’s just as many reasons why they can feel greedy &/or pointless & that to me feels like a big reason people complain about them so much
