After surviving the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Hogg and his classmates became vocal activists in the fight for gun control. But that spotlight has made them prime targets for the right-wing smear machine: a collection of Fox News hosts like Laura Ingraham, conservative pundits, conspiracy theorists like Alex Jones, Twitter provocateurs, and RUclips commentators who piled on to the teens in the wake of the shooting.
Rather than crumbling under the pressure, they're using humor and advertiser pressure to keep their cause in the media spotlight while disarming their critics. In the face of intense media attention, the Parkland students are putting on a masterclass in how to deal with bullies.

Right, so if I'm with my parents walking down a sidewalk, and a truck comes and kills both my parents while I'm standing helplessly watching, does that mean that suddenly everyone is going to take me seriously when I start calling for all cars to be banned?
Edit: For you darlings out there who were so blindly focused on my comparison of guns to cars that you missed the entire point of my comment, let me elaborate for you. I was merely pointing out that we should not allow emotions to overwhelm our ability to think rationally. I was trying to say that if someone had a very traumatic experience with anything, a car for instance, it wouldn't be unexpected for them to suggest radical policies with reference to cars, no matter how absurd the suggested policies were.

Carson N S why though? I don’t recall those two harassing, abusing and slandering a teenager who survived a shooting.
Tell me, why does Fox and right wing media feel the need to not merely critisise, but attack the kid personally, rather than his ideas and what he’s actually saying ?
Not just attack the kid, but makes up lies about him to attack him.
@@cn2673 Okay ya fair I do concede the CNN bit, but what of Vox? Didn't see them "attacking" the kid.
Also I feel that's a slightly false equivalency. The smirking kid thing was in the context of a clash between ideologies in an open environment with confrontational behaviour on both sides. While the kid certainly didn't deserve the person abuse for what he did, I don't see the issue with criticising him.
With Hogg, this was a kid who had survived a mass shooting, and was simply campaigning for some kind of change to stop these kinds of massacres from happening, or at least making them way less frequent as best as possible. And despite that, he was slandered, abused and threatened by the media and their followers.
@@cn2673 Okay, fair but I have to ask, what was the relevance of any of this?? This was about a teenager talking about how to handle abuse and lies from the largest media corporation in America, not necessarily "taking them down". So why the need to mention CNN and Vox in those contexts? This thing had with Hogg had nothing to do with the smirking kid incident. So why bring it up like that?

It seems like everyone just shouts "gun control bad" and "gun control good" in the media all the time so the one thing that sticks out to me was his point that like nobody talks about the policy. Why can't these grown adults engage in the issue of policy instead of insulting his GPA, that's so terribly immature, it's like they don't even care about the issue... oh wait...
Siara Hughes people taking a hard stance one or the other side about anything, especially gun control are quite often ignoring the nuances. I think striking a balance is important. I don't want to see all guns taken away (small arms are pretty good for protecting yourself) but simultaneously something must be done when you have the worst stats for gun related violence per capita in the developed world. You don't really hear about mass shootings anywhere in but in the U.S. and they happen frighteningly often here. I think gun control in the sense of regulating who exactly gets guns (i.e. those who do not have mental disorder like schizophrenia) and what is very difficult to get even if you're healthy (I think anything larger than a hunting rifle should be very heavily regulated).
That's what Kyle Kashuv (another survivor) has been doing. He spoke to state and federal representatives and helped suggest policy that has actually been implemented.
Siara Hughes nobody talks about how since the 1950's 98% of all mass shootings have occurred in gun free zones
I don't engage in policy issue discussions with children. For the exact same reason we as a society do not allow them to vote. We do not consider their mental, emotional, and psychological development adequate to vote.
I'm not even remotely interested in what they think.
Now, if I were their parent, I'd listen to them out of "respect" and to nurture their development. However, when craven ideologues exploit these children and put them on stage "demanding" anything, and in the process demonizing and scapegoating millions of citizens, well, I'm afraid the swift and explicit sanctioning by the adults in the room will ensue. As it should.
The disgrace in all of this is actually the children's parents. For they are not serving them by allowing what has transpired. The children were exploited, period.
greg sheppard The constitution can be changed. It has been in the past due to grievous errors that were put into it.
Besides which, if you'd actually read the 2nd amendment, it clearly says "well-regulated militia", which has nothing to do with personal ownership.

Laurence I'm not saying what Laura said was right, but silencing voices and ridiculing others isn't how to make anything better. All it does is spread more hate, when he supposedly wants to get rid of hate and unite Americans. He's approaching all of this the wrong way in my opinion.
trollslayertim 92 I never said that they didn't ridicule him. BUT he should know by now that by putting himself in the spotlight that he's going to be ridiculed. It's just a part of life, he needs to grow up and decide whether or not he's a child or an adult, because it seems like he's confused right now. When grown men and women insult victims. these people would the type of parents to say to their kids,oh it's alright you got shot at least you're alive.
Abe the insults came from him first many times. The woman who gets raped and says all men are evil is left alone. When left wing media shoves a mic and camera in her mouth and face and that's all we here on there news outlets for 4 plus weeks. Her victim pass has expired and she will get verbally brutally corrected.
If you put yourself out there on media claiming certain viewpoints wanting to challenge certain rights afforded by the Constitution, heck yeah they deserved to be argued with and debated with logic, sure of course it is not nice to call people names that have nothing to with what they are saying but they have to be ready to face all kinds of opposition. Some of the opposition may be illogical, some may be logical but that doesn't mean that if they are a victim of tragedy and decide to rally behind gun control and go on to the main stream news that they are "Free From Criticism." You have to take all of it, including the insults. Right now I am stating my belief therefore I have to be ready to take insults. If you can't handle mild/weird insults then maybe you can't handle the spotlight.
getting shot at doesn't make someones political views less retarded
Black Iron Tarkus it doesn’t mean he is retarded, it means we can argue the effectiveness of his policy/ let’s have a separation of person and policy proposed
That’s like saying I survived the cancer, now I know the cure ( sorry for my blunt example )
I find fascinating that most criticism targets his age, not what he may have actually said, to showcase that he apparently doesn’t know much about gun control. Classic ad hominem arguments, dismissing what he has to say based on who he is instead of what he said, and getting lost in the inane debate of wether or not he should be listened to. I mean, if he’s so young/inexperienced/alien/an actor, I’m sure his arguments would be easy to disprove, no? I‘m aware of how tough it is to get facts due to NRA blocking studies and how murky it can get, but there are a few legitimate studies out there. Seems to me that either you discredit someone‘s arguments with facts, or... well, if you can’t, maybe consider either research or adding nuance on your viewpoint.
The smear campaign seems more like desperate attempts to discredit someone because they cannot actually debate the issue itself.
In the words of the great Donald Trump...
„sad“.
He literally swears and makes obscene statements in his interviews, and completely exaggerates most of his comments. Moreover, news outlets such as CNN and Vox express David's opinions, as they are young and have a shield of immunity having just survived a school shooting. This leads to false ideas and facts being spread due to the exploitation of these kids. His main view on gun control is fine, but when he backs it up with rude statements, he should be criticised on all fronts.
Daniel Howlett his "view on gun control" is not fine at all. He supports ban and consifiscation. Communist scum like this needs to be physically removed from polite society.
Sorry, I’m not familiar with his swearing/obscene comments. That should absolutely be criticized if true. But that does not mean that his points on gun control should face the same criticism-the way someone says something doesn’t necessarily discredit the content of what they are saying. That’s what I find distressing-the shutting down of his comments on gun control based on the way he said them is irrational. Now, in terms of the shield of immunity he may have as a victim, regardless if justified, should not be applicable to the facts that he may present, I 100% agree with that. As stated before, I would like to see the rebuttal of his arguments based on their content, his character has little to do with it, and should be criticized seperately. I would actually understand the immunization of being a victim within a school shooting if applied to criticism on his character-I think we can all understand Hogg went through traumatic events and should benefit from more understanding and compassion than a non-victim when criticizing his approach. But I also disagree with using this immunity as an excuse to not think critically and fact check his arguments on gun control.
So essentially-he should be criticized for his way of approaching this issue but I think we can all agree that we should keep in mind that Hogg went through trauma-adult or not. However, this should not mean that if his arguments are factually incorrect, they shouldn’t be highlighted as such, with explanations of course.
I won’t defend the media outlets that aren’t doing so.
I would point out that if the conservative media adopted that strategy from the beginning, they wouldn’t be seen as the type of people who would try to smear a victim of a school shooting. Positioning yourself as understanding but arguing his points factually instead; hence removing yourself from being confronted to this « immunity », would have been much smarter. You may argue that the townhall debate was an attempt at doing so, but the media coverage of it fell right into the trap of questioning these kids’ validity and hence hit the wall of immunity. Factually disproving them and avoiding a smear campaign at all cost would actually have positioned them in a much stronger place against gun control.
T.J. Upchurch He's a teenager who just survived a shooting. Is it that bad that he's a bit stricter on gun control than you think he should be? I'm not saying you should agree with everything he says, but it's a lot more valid than NRA propaganda. Also don't you have better things to do than advocate beating someone for having opinions than yours and vilifying a highschooler? Just a thought
J ronnn J ronnn J ronnn hum, NRA has a history of blocking government research on gun control. It’s been quite well researched. I’m quite disconcerted by that comment actually, this is quite well known?

On the research on Gun violence that is available (internationally and the little that is available nationally), please do point me towards research that would show how ease of accessibility to guns causes higher safety and lower mass shooting rates please? Genuinely curious, read a little on the topic and the statistical evidence overwhelmingly points in the other direction.

Choosing which arguments to debate is the most debaty tactic in debating
I don't give a platform to people with enough of a platform. Debates aren't useful.
Lol no, it proved he primarily parrots talking points and would be totally unable to hold is own in a debate.
When you have to resort to insulting or threatening kids and teenagers to win an argument, either your argument is weak at best or you abandon morality and lie to make your cause appear valid.
Jesse Torres When you have to resort to calling all of your government opponents child murderers who "only see dollar signs" then your argument may be weak.

Because teenagers have nothing valuable to offer the world
He LITERALLY said on an interview he was NOT at the school. He literally said he biked to his house while the shooting was happening LOOK IT UP.
NachosandWhatNot Not true! David was in School during the shootings but left to go home and then he returned later that evening!!! Get a life loser!!!
Good way to change the narrative. It doesn't even matter even he wasn't at school that day. He knew people that got killed, and attended a school that was victim to a mass shooting.
Dana Loesch: "If you're too immature to carry a firearm, you're too immature to make policy."
How do you presume to measure maturity? In my life, I've known _60-year-olds_ who were too immature to carry a firearm. The State did _nothing_ restrict their policy-making ability.
lazyperfectionist1 I think the concept is right on point, but the policy doesn't reflect the concept. Just like marriage is available for adults but there are tons of 20+ year old children getting married resulting in divorce rate increase :/. Same thing.
Adults are more experienced than children. Whether or not they *learn* from those experiences is a different question, but there is a good reason why someone would weigh an adult's opinion higher than a child's.
I just wanna tell you i see your comments in nearly most of the video I watch and I just wanna say hi, and let you know that I feel like your assigned FBI agent
I think the idea that a child is less experienced and can't make a valid argument is bullshit. We live in the internet age if a kid wants to make an argument they have access to all the same information adults do. What matters is not life experience for it misses the complexity of the real world, numbers and evidence is all that is needed for a good argument. Adults just use the young factor to discount the views of the youth, its a basic ad hominem and for some reason it's one that works. The elite just want to avoid debating the argument at hand like usual so they go for the low hanging fruit. Regardless of the age the person is or their background you always debate the point at hand with a rebuttal, evidence, and a good argument anything less isn't honesty in a debate. Come one people you should know this, it's debate 101.
Pre frontal cotrex is your friend. Your brain is not even fully wired up until 25 or so, teens do not use their brains in the same way as adults, they are works in progress... intelligence and wisdom are not mutually exclusive.

It worked awesome. She doubled them and got new ones when they came back.
It was an epic example of vengeance overkill done with a malicious motivation. As far as being a survivor is concerned, that is all I've ever been. Born in a bad neighborhood, poor, abusive WW2 PTSD father, inner city schools, Vietnam vet, accident survivor, heroin and other drug use, blizzards, tornadoes, hurricanes, robbery , heart disease, combat vet, agent orange exposure and born too late to be computer proficient. Father died one year, mother the next and wife a year later. And no media calling me a survivor or heroic.

Don't worry, just call them child killers enough and they'll admit they're wrong eventually...not.

Ms Articulate not rlly ... the real person that is actually doing something is Kyle kush cuz he actually met with senators oh and he’s a conservative.
Ms Articulate at what? David Hogg’s already mocked half the legislators, he’s rejected a phone call from one of the most powerful leaders in the world. He’s ostracised every gun owner, he’s called for boycotts of companies that disagree with him. He’s called the NRA child murderers. He isn’t going to accomplish anything through his ignorant behaviour. It’s only going to annoy people.
Isn't that the kid who's dad altered emails between him and CNN? Because that certainly isn't social media savvy.
Edfromchowderheads David Hogg and other Parkland survivors have done something people of the previous generations have spectacularly failed to address; school shooting massacres. I am the generation that went to high school during Columbine, and since then, absolutely nothing has changed. School shootings are a norm in this country because we refuse to take responsibility and recognition for our firearms.
I am very glad the new generation has made this a priority. The politicians have failed. The NRA has failed. And we have failed. Why do we continue to tolerate and pander to psychopaths to own fire arms? I am glad Hogg is calling BS on this.
Ms Articulate Bullys=People who want to keep their constitutional rights. Heroes=People who want to take rights from others. How brainwashed does one need to be in order to believe this statement?

He travels with armed security so evidently guns are good if they are used to protect him, but not good for you if you want to protect yourselves or family! It's called HYPOCRICY folks!
their policy recommendations literally aren't to ban guns entirely. So, where's the hypocrisy?

Haha, yeah that would be me too

Crowders Rebuttal video for this is going to be a good one :)
Shawn Walsh I really hope that he brings up how David talked about how clear backpacks went against students rights meanwhile he was trying to ban certain guns all together... Oh the irony

And what do you mean by more gun control.
Those riots were in direct response because of aggeavated police during peaceful protests; for example, in Canada our police aren’t armed to the teeth so our protests remained peaceful and without bumps, and also we got gun control so we don’t have school shootings every weekend. 😄
Bumper Bonnie Why you turning this to Canada vs America thing? They are severely deferent countries.
@@noodles5438 Absolutely, but because people don't have access to automatic weapons (except the N.S shooter who got his weapons from America, go figure), while maintaining a large gun culture in hunting. Roberto Fontiglia Not forgotten, but strangled by the press and the public. It’s not about whether or not they’ve forgotten, it’s that they were suppressed by opposing opinions with money and power so that their voices couldn’t be heard.
Wow Vox, your videos are getting a little too controversial... You are disagreeing and refuting Alex Jones? How courageous of you.
i'm really trying to work out what's being criticised here...that alex jones is an easy target? but its entirely relevant to this conversation...were they supposed to deliberately ignore alex jones? im confused.
that's like saying that hitler is an easy target for criticism so in a documentary about the holocaust they should avoid talking about it? hm
likeastarbaby no, they shouldn't, but they act like every criticism this kid gets is as valid as Alex Jones' hatemongering. Now I don't know whether this guy David Hogg is speaking the truth or not, because i dont really care, but whatever the case may be, this video completely misrepresents every other criticism he is getting. So as much as I dislike fox new and steven crowder for being dishonest all the time, i cant say that this video provides me with any less biased information.
Michael Mansheim what about the hundreds of millions of guns that will be as available after implementing gun laws as they are now? Don't get me wrong, I do think that guns are the problem. But it would be necessary to pull out all the guns in the market AND black market to make gun-control work like it works in every other civilized country on earth. IF there were relatively the same amount of guns in the market than there is in the UK for example, then of course gun-control laws would be for the good of all people including hunters and such who have a real practical use for guns. So please, do not call me an idiot, and try to explain me, a European, why would gun-control laws work as efficiently in America as they work in Europe? If there was a politically acceptable way, that wouldn't lead to civil war, to pull the guns away from the people that own them with no use, I would certainly support that, but just controlling additional gun purchases from now on would in my opinion be for the worse, because the black market wouldn't disappear anywhere.
I repeat, I am not here to fight or anything like that, I don't even have a definite stance on American gun-control laws, but this is the conclusion that I have come to with my limited understanding, and I would be happy to change it.
And by the way, I hate the American patriotism probably as much as you do, but I won't support the opposing just for sake of that.
Michael Mansheim i don't think the mass shootings are the real problem. They are a marginal issue compared to gun violence in general, statistically speaking. Of course they get the media attention and such.
As to your utopistic view about gun production being stopped after federal action, it just won't happen, sadly. As long as the US has no borders, guns can be brought from Mexico, and the black market would grow even more, because the demand for guns wouldn't disappear at least in the next 50 years. So I basically think that opposing border control and supporting stricter gun-control is a contradiction.
While the comments are a mess, I'm just going to follow a bit of advice from the video and say, "I love you." Hope anyone who finds this is having a good day.

It just occurred to me; Hogg survived 9/11 as well as the Parkland shooting by not being anywhere in the vicinity. He could possibly have peddled his tricycle over to the towers if he'd been in a hotel nearby at the time.
Whether he is any of those things or not, I don't care. Im just so happy and thankful that you got Laura Ingraham REAL GOOD!

silvsilvsilv so Hogg calling adults murderers...was not out of line?
Harassing someone's check-writer to undermine their freedom of speech is asinine and should be illegal. It's using your freedom of speech to directly cause real damages to someone else, and that's immoral.
Kevin Tanuwijaya, it's absolutely out of line. That doesn't address my point, however.
Just because you were involved in a tragedy doesn't mean you should be immune to criticism...
Leftist can’t take criticism look at the other guys comment he was triggered by your statement which was slight criticism at most. Leftist equal facist, either think like them or your a racist bigot
Eric Taylor actions dictate argument sometimes and calling for a national boycott because someone makes a stupid comment they shouldn’t have show many that his whole existence is based on “listen to me like an adult because I know Best because I survived a shooting, but don’t disagree with me because I’m a kid who survived a shooting.” We would ALL welcome his arguments if he actually had some... he mainly just demigogues people to death or curses them out for being “child murderers”.... there’s no argument...
Also, Emma Gonzalez is worlds better at this entire thing, I cannot for the life of me figure out why David Hogg is the one people latched onto when you have a girl who can literally make a point in debate by extending a moment of silence. SHE is who we need to watch. Not this boy.
B S Emma also stated this.
Since he was in middle school, it was no surprise to anyone who knew him to hear that he was the shooter. Those talking about how we should have not ostracized him? You didn’t know this kid, OK? We did.
They admitted to ostracizing the kid for years and they still can’t see that they pushed this kid too far.
Jason Evans the shooter was selling knives out of his backpack and was expelled for being violent and causing trouble. No wonder the other kids avoided him. Would you want your kid associating with someone like that? And even if it’s true that Emma bullied him, does that excuse the shooter? No. If you bully someone and they go out and do something stupid, you are not responsible for their behavior. You are responsible for YOUR behavior, not someone else’s.
