- Today we're in Edmonton, AB in Canada, at a place called Miss Saigon Vietnamese Noodle House (no, it's not named after the musical)...
We're doing battle with their 'What The Pho' challenge, which costs $65 and consists of 2lb of beef, 2lb of noodles, vegetables and 4 litres of broth. If you can finish it inside one hour, you get a spot on their wall of fame, a winner's shirt and half price food for six months!

Finishing the broth should absolutely be a requirement. It's Vietnamese Noodle SOUP. The broth is the MOST integral part of what makes Pho. Literally 99% of all Pho places uses the same rice noodles, but the broth is the signature point of what makes Pho different from each other. In my opinion, you're the only one that finished the ENTIRE BOWL and is the true winner on that board.
They should have given him a shirt that said Pho King.

I was just saying some places the broth is what I come for to chug and slurp up at the end. Either after a long day at work or if you're not feeling to well pho broth or wonton soup is that miracle feel better liquid.

I know the slurping is usually seen as rude but one time I read that in Japan they don't mind because it means you enjoyed your meal

It’s crazy she was so thorough with the rules except the broth one.
They must have a lot of chumps who have argued and debated with them on those rules. With 200+ losers you'd have some pretty salty and combative challengers.

I think that amount of broth might have too much salt to be safe. Adding soya sauce on top is also not helping.

That is because unlike solid foods, liquids are unsafe to consume in these amounts. Immediately unsafe, not through long term health effects.
Look up hyponatremia, and yes, you can get it from salty broth nearly just as easily as from water.

Who doesn’t finish the broth? What sort of challenge is it when you only need to finish half of the meal. Well done Adam 👍👍
Probably because it's nearly impossible.
Food can be compressed and mushed in your mouth to make the end result much smaller than the food that was made.
Liquid can't be compressed. The volume will stay the same whether it's in the bowl or in your stomach. So unless you train your stomach to stretch (like most food eating professional) you're not gonna be able to do it.

I'm not sure I could conquer this, but I had no doubt you would. It must be refreshing to do a challenge like this that's not a mountain of burgers/gigantic pizza/monstrous sandwich/platter of tacos. The relative rarity of a big soup bowl must be a nice change of pace.

Yeh, its seems like a moderate challenge if it's only the meat and noodles, half the challenge is the broth.
Yeah makes you wonder why they give you so much broth, you'd think they'd just cook it in the broth the ladle it out on a big platter for you to eat.

@sfsuphysics Because pho is traditionally served in the broth, it’s like a soup. Putting it out on a platter would be the opposite of pho.

I laughed my arse off when you lifted that bowl up. "He won't do that" I said to meself, but in true English fashion it happened and the size of that bowl lol. Classic. I had pho once in Toronto and people were leaving broth in regular bowls, I couldn't understand if they were full or just was scooping the good stuff
