This is seriously the most helpful tutorial I have ever watched. My mum is an insanely good knitter but terrible at explaining so knitting was always this big mystery for me (away from knitting a scarf). Cable knitting - along with socks - was always my personal holy grail of knitting. Thank you for explaining it so so well!
I looked up several instructional videos on cables, and this is certainly the best one I've seen. All terms explained, simple, step-by-step, and goes through the entire process. Thanks so much!
I am so excited to try this tomorrow! I was also so happy to see that you are a Continental knitter like me! Thank you for such a clear and inspiring video! I have been knitting for 8 months now. I know I can be successful at the cable cowl pattern I want to make thanks to your great video.
I just want to say that your tutorial is the most clear and most helpful of the ones I have watched . They are all good but YOURS is in continental style and it makes sense to me. Thank you.
Hello..just have to tell you this...I had never knit cables before but with your excellent instructions I can now do them! Took LOTS of practice, but i took your pattern and made a throw for my daughter. She loved it, and now am making a full size one for my granddaughter. Thank you so much for teaching me anything is possible!
This is by far the best cable tutorial I've watched - everybody else only shows how to operate the cable needle but doesn't show what happens before, after and on the reverse side of the cable. For a complete beginner like myself your video was much more informative!! Thank you! :)
very clear instructions, I am getting my supplies tomorrow. I will keep you posted on my progress. I have bad arthritis in my fingers and my doctor suggested I start knitting....!!!
I have been knitting for only six weeks. This video was so well done that I was able to accomplish a little sample tonight. I feel like a genius! Thank you so much. Well done.
This is the only cabling video that made sense. I am so glad you started us off on the project. All the other ones I tried had the swatch already made up so I was very lost. Thanks to you, I actually did a cable!
Awesome! Thank you! I needed a refresher, I could knit cables 4 decades ago, but I forgot... It is so much nicer with a video. Not sure how I learned back then, from explanations on a sheet of paper probably... Anyways, please forgive my long talk and thanks again for this EXCELLENT video !!!
Thank you very much! I remember knitting a sweater for my daughter when she was 3 or 4 years old. It had a beautiful cable on the front. Need I say how family & friends were impressed! Haha. That was 30 Yrs ago,! No internet/no You Tube in those days, only library & mags then. I really appreciate your video thank you.
Thank you. Great instructions. Just returning to knitting after 50 years. Love the fact that you knit Continental which is the way I learned. I will be back often!
Thank you for your straight-forward tutorial -- it was very comprehensive! I really appreciate the time you took to show every step. I've been self-teaching knitting for several years now, mostly the hard way of trial and error, but these sort of videos that cover 100% of the process are exactly what I need. Hoping to take on the curved needles this summer :)
Thanks for such an easy and explicit explanation of how to do the cable stitch. I had followed other videos but could not get it right, but your video corrected my mistakes. So jow I am all ready to do the Cable Stitch!!!
I have watched many cable videos and almost gave up until I found this vedio and I was able to do it and it looks great. Thank you for your clear instructions and I look forward to learning more from you.
Brilliant tutorial, my first time knitting a cable came out lovely thanks to your fantastic tutorial, can't wait to experiment this technique in various sizes and yarns!
Since I'm self taught I sometimes have problem picking up a new stitch and cables made me mad for a week. Your video is perfect and I think I will finally be able to make a cable. Thank you!
Thank you for posting this! I wasn't understanding what I was doing wrong for a basic cable knit, and now I know how to fix it! Yay! No more giant holes next to my twists!
Hello! I am a beginner knitter, and I have wanted to do cable stitches for some time now. After searching through several tutorials and blogs, I have failed attempts at making a sample. But your video is just brilliant. The way you have explained the cable stitch, with stockinette and reverse stockinette stitch, it just makes it so easy to understand the stitch. I was able to make my swatch at the first go. Thank you so much. I am sharing this on Pinterest!
Finally I've found someone that was able to explain me how to do cable! Thank you so much for this video, God Bless You and all those who take their time to explain! How I wish I could find near my home someone who know well this splendid art that is almost forgotten by many (even though today it's returning again!)
Thank you for this wonderful explanation! As I learned the basics of knitting in my own language, I was especially grateful for the terminology introduction. Great video!
First off, who in the heck gave this tutorial a thumb down??? I taught myself to knit in 1998 & never thought I was ever going to learn more than knit & purl. Then this morning, I decided to play around after finishing a big project. Ironically, I cast on 26 and started in stockinette. Decided on a Saturday morning whim to attempt to learn to cable. While I'm sure there will probably be other kinds of cables to learn in the future, I know, from this awesomely simple yet thorough tutorial, that it's not as hard I always thought it would be. I just turned 50 (going on 20) this month, and so far learned arm knitting and cabling. You CAN teach old dogs new tricks, if you're going to make it this easy. You do not know how excited I am! My next project will definitely have this cable in it! Thank you!
Thank you so much. I’ve been terrified of cables. Now my daughter in law wants a cable beanie for my granddaughter so I thought I’d better learn. I’m so glad I found this tutorial. You made it so simple!,,
I'm getting ready to knit my very first cables. Your video has been one of the most helpful thus far. You have a nicely toned teaching voice as well. Thank you.
I watched a coupla other ones first, but glad I finally got to yours because yours was straight down basic and that is what I needed. Others showed moving the stitches around assuming you already knew everything else and I didn't, so I learned about the rss and only doing the cable stitch every 7 rows, etc. I'm guessing that the actual pattern will tell us on which rows to do the cabling, cuz I don't think it would be 7 rows for every single cable out there. anyway- very nice video. well spoken, clear, precise and above all extremely informative. and you answer your comments! cool beans :)
Dear Viewers! Thank you so much for your kind comments. Let me know what kinds of knitting techniques you'd like to see and I'll work on getting a video up!
i agree with the rest of the comments this is the easiest most thorough explanatory video on here. there is another by knitpicks but I think the videos overcomplicate things. I no longer have my nana around to show me so your videos are going to be a huge comfort and I will be learning at the same time
thank you! I bought a cable holder in hopes I could make stuff look nice, elegant & a little difficult ;P , but all the patterns used other needles I didn't have D: or it didn't thoroughly explain. your tutorial is easy to understand & a great first cable stitch "project" I love it(:
@Lilly Smith Stockinette stitch is knit one row, purl the next. It gives the "fabric" look. Reverse stockinette is purl one row, knit the next. I hope that helps.
Thank you so much for your tutorial. It was easy to follow and finally after watching other videos and no success, with yours I got it!!! --- Blessings!
Thank you so much for this tutorial!! I have looked at no less than 6 or 7, and this is the first one that shows the back. I have successfully done a cable like this, on a sampler, purely on how you explained it. I do have a question, though... you have very neat edges on the stockinette stitch - would you do a video on this manner of selvedge for stockinette, please?
Hello, your video was very informative and great. I was hoping you could tell me how to incorporate it into a continuous border for my ten stitch knitted afghan that I'm working on. I haven't gotten to the last rows yet but i figured I may as well look for a nice looking border for it by the time I'm done.
+Kaitlyn Clark I think I know what you want. The technique for cable is the same. You might try ravelry.com and search their patterns for what you're looking for. You could also ask in their forums. If you're not a member of Ravelry (free!) you must check it out! :-)
YES!!! Finally, the pattern and explanation I was looking. Your video gives me the confidence to finally attempt a Cable Scarf. Thank you, HowToEugene! But I will use a larger size needle (maybe a 10 1|2) and yarn (6 bulky).
+Precious Harrison Hooray! Yes, this technique is applicable to all yarn sizes and needle sizes. Just follow your pattern instructions and you'll do great!
I have long been afraid of trying to cable because it looks like it would be hard to make but it is easy and now I can attempt the cable cowl I wanted to make
Jessica Lynn Gibbs it makes up into a gorgeous afghan!! I made a throw for my daughter and my granddaughter loved it so much, I am now halfway done with a full size afghan. Beautiful pattern!
THANKYOU! This video was very informational and helpful. I'm currently starting to knit a scarf foe my mother and I was confused on the cable (I'm using size 13 needles for the yarn)
THANK YOU AGAIN-V HELPFUL ADVICE INDEED- TELL ME PLEASE,WHAT CAN I DO THAT THE FINISHED KNITTING-WORK WILL LOOK AS SMOOTH,(LIKE IRONED) AS IN MAGAZINES?
What you're seeing are pieces that are blocked. Either blocked piece by piece, then sewn together, or blocked in their finished stage. The cable sampler in this video is blocked. It's very important to know your yarn before blocking (never touch your iron onto acrylic!). There are forums on Ravelry that answer questions about blocking. If you Google blocking, you'll see different techniques. Have fun!
Lynette, For this sampler, I just knitted a couple of rows before I did the first cable. If you are following a pattern, for a sweater perhaps, the pattern will indicate what to do. Often, a sweater will have a rib bottom, then a cable pattern after that. I hope this helps!
Thank you so much for this tutorial ma'am, but I would really like your advice that for this particular pattern should always the Cable needle be turned towards the Front on Every 8th Row?. Am really looking forward to your Reply. Thanks once again!.
I am with Rachel in the comment below. I have only ever done knitting and purling before. Please can I have a response. I am trying to knit a cable. I understand the first and second row as shown on the video, but then... what do you do up until the next cable on the 8th row? Do you continue to knit 8, purl 2, knit 3, pull 3 off with the cable, knit 3, purl 2 and then knit to the end of the row etc or am I not supposed to use the cable holder until the 8th row? In the video it skips to the next cable, so I am not sure what is done in the knitting up to that point. Does this make sense? Thanks, this is the only video that has made any sense to me!
Sorry for the delay in answering! Think of the swatch as a combination of knit and purl stitches. It is *only* when you're making the "cable," the part where stitches come across the front of others, that you use the cable hook to hold those stitches. For the rest of the time, knit the pattern straight across the row. Knit the knits, purl the purls. Put the cable needle down until the pattern calls for the cross in front. I hope this helps. Let me know!
why or how do you do a reverse stokinette? i'm rather new to knitting but love your viideo and am willing to try but i the "reverse stokenette" i do not understand? any help appreciated thank you
Hi, I have been knitting and crocheting for many years. After seeing the way most of the people do it, I find that the way I hold my work and technique is different. Could it be the European way, although I have never really seen it, it is just the way my grandmother taught me. I love this pattern though and hope I can follow it. I am wanting to make a scarf for a man and this is what I want. Thank you for this pattern........
Great video with very clear instructions! I managed to do my first cable after learning to knit in January. My only problem is that my swatch is curling on the sides, is this to do with the tension? Does anyone else have this issue? Otherwise it looks beautiful :)
Hello, I have been trying to knit a scarf that involves a pattern with various cables, to form a reversible scarf. My point is that I have tried it with narrow (5mm) and wider (7mm) needles, and either way, I end up with holes where the '4' cables cross. What do you reccommend? Thanks so much!!!
Do you think you could make a video on how to knit a jumper/ sweater- the sleeve part (when knitting with circular needles?) please? :)) It would be a great help!
Stockinette is knit one row, purl the next. It gives the "finished" look to a piece. Reverse stockinette is the same, but it's used as a contrast, to make the cable pop out away from the fabric. If you're following a pattern, it will most likely tell you when to knit and when to purl. Only when you're done will you see that you've been creating reverse stockinette. Happy knitting!
Hi there. This might be a silly question but after doing the first 2 rows, what do you do for the next seven? Do we just follow through the same thing or just continue to knit one row, purl one row?
No questions are silly! After the first two rows, yes, you continue to knit "the pattern" which is knit one row, purl one row, which is stockinette stitch. Remember to "reverse stockinette" on the stitches next to the cable. And the cable itself is stockinette. I hope this helps. Happy knitting!
i am pretty new with knitting and i want to try the cable stitch. so far your video has made the most sense! i haven't tried to tackle it yet so wish me luck. quick question, if i want to do more than 26 stitches, say 30 or 40, what would the pattern be like?
The Stockinette stitch on either side of the cable pattern can be any number of stitches. I've made it this size as it makes a nice square sampler. If you were, for instance, knitting a sweater with a cable edge, there would be a lot more stockinette. If you want to practice this, but make it larger, simply cast on more stitches, but leave the basic reverse stockinette, cable section the same. That will make it easier for you. Does that help?
HowToEugene got it. this video truly explains the cable stitch the best. thanks again! just to clarify….you are doing the cable stitch every 7th row? and in the beginning of the video you started a couple rows then jumped into the cable. should i just do 7 rows before jumping into cable or can i just start with the cable row? thanks again for all the info!!
Micheline Bailey I'm sorry I didn't get back to you sooner! You can start right in with the cable pattern. If you're knitting something from a written pattern, a sweater or leggings, the pattern will explain when to begin the cable.
I don't off hand. I did a quick google search and found that a site called BrooklyTweed dot com has pretty good written instructions. Also a good knitting book will have it as well. You'll catch on quickly! Happy knitting!
i'm working on this swatch, doing the exact same thing as you, but my edges are curling in a little too much for it to really work as a scarf. i know that stockinette typically does curl in a lot but your swatch doesn't seem to as much as mine does..any suggestions as to what i'm doing wrong?
Yes, stockinette would curl at the edges of the scarf. One reason that this swatch doesn't curl is that it's knit from inexpensive acrylic yarn and blocked. For your scarf, you might try a seed stitch edge to keep it from curling or if you're too far along to change up, you might find that blocking will help keep it from curling. Happy Knitting!
Thank you soo much! I could follow your teaching easily, but ma'am, should always the Cable Needle turned to the Front? Will the Pattern be the same one you have shown?? Am waiting for your reply ma'am. Thank You once again.
Thank you SO much! I tried three other videos before hitting on this one. Your instructions are perfection!
Thank you!

very clear instructions, I am getting my supplies tomorrow. I will keep you posted on my progress. I have bad arthritis in my fingers and my doctor suggested I start knitting....!!!
+Mario Denis Good luck! Yes, I find that knitting can keep the fingers moving and that certainly can't hurt!
I have been knitting for only six weeks. This video was so well done that I was able to accomplish a little sample tonight. I feel like a genius! Thank you so much. Well done.
+Carol Smiley There's something about a cable, isn't there? It looks so complicated, but isn't!
This is the only cabling video that made sense. I am so glad you started us off on the project. All the other ones I tried had the swatch already made up so I was very lost. Thanks to you, I actually did a cable!

Thank you! Most tutorials only show one or two rows. You knit quite a few! It really makes a difference.
Glad it helped!
By far one of the easiest tutorials to follow! Thank you! I feel a little more confident in attempting to cable knit!
Since I'm self taught I sometimes have problem picking up a new stitch and cables made me mad for a week. Your video is perfect and I think I will finally be able to make a cable. Thank you!

Happy Knitting!
Finally I've found someone that was able to explain me how to do cable! Thank you so much for this video, God Bless You and all those who take their time to explain! Thank you for this wonderful explanation! As I learned the basics of knitting in my own language, I was especially grateful for the terminology introduction. Great video!
Thank you!!
Thank you so much. This is very clear and nicely paced so I could follow you easily. I am only just now learning to cable - I now know I can do it.
First off, who in the heck gave this tutorial a thumb down???

@Lilly Smith Stockinette stitch is knit one row, purl the next. It gives the "fabric" look. Reverse stockinette is purl one row, knit the next. I hope that helps.
Helped me! I understand knit one row, purl the next. Thank you.
What type of Yarn did you use in this Demo ?? Is it a cotton blend ?
You are fantastic! I just put this on my Pinterest board. Finally, great instructions in a voice I can listen to!
I'm glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for your tutorial. It was easy to follow and finally after watching other videos and no success, with yours I got it!!! --- Blessings!
Fantastic, easy way to make cable
Thank you so much for this helpful video! It was very easy to understand. A big thanks for showing the reverse/wrong side of the cable!
Thanks for your comments!
Thank you - great directions! Much easier than I anticipated.
+Kat Maeda You're welcome! Yes it's easier than it looks, isn't it?
Thank you so much for this tutorial!! I have looked at no less than 6 or 7, and this is the first one that shows the back. I have successfully done a cable like this, on a sampler, purely on how you explained it. I do have a question, though... you have very neat edges on the stockinette stitch - would you do a video on this manner of selvedge for stockinette, please?

+Precious Harrison Hooray! Yes, this technique is applicable to all yarn sizes and needle sizes. Just follow your pattern instructions and you'll do great!
Thank you. Your instruction was great and the camera at the right angle to see exactly what you were doing. The best video on cable.
I’m a permanent beginner. Need to watch this a few times to get it. TY
Thank you so much for a very clear understanding. I am thrilled i can make a cable stitch now!!! Thank you again!! Happy Holidays!
Thanks for your nice comments! Knitting a cable looks so complicated, but it isn't and that's a wonderful thing!
More videos please like this! I'm a beginner you made this video very easy to understand.
Thanks ! I got it, after of course playing the video 10 times, you tube is the best !
RUclips is great, isn't it? You can find almost anything you need to know. And we all *need* to know how to cable. :-)
Great job on the video. It's very easy to understand and I'm excited to try this!
+Rhiannon Orizaga I'm grateful for your comment!
Best tutorial on knitting cables!
Brittany, I'm glad it was useful. I love how cable looks difficult, but the basics are pretty simple!
Can I get a written instruction .
Thank you for this. I have returned to this video many times.
I'm glad to hear it! That makes my day! Happy knitting!
Thank you for this! This is such a good tutorial for knitting a cable! I've mastered my first ever one and am going to cable myself a scarf next!
I have long been afraid of trying to cable because it looks like it would be hard to make but it is easy and now I can attempt the cable cowl I wanted to make
+hawkrocker I hope you can get the cowl done! It's almost winter here in Oregon!
This is a good video. Helpful, nice pace, thorough, good quality. Very pure. Thank u @HowToEugene
Thanks!
What would this swatch look like in pattern instructions?
Also, thank you so much for your video, it was extremely helpful!

Lynette,
For this sampler, I just knitted a couple of rows before I did the first cable. If you are following a pattern, for a sweater perhaps, the pattern will indicate what to do. Often, a sweater will have a rib bottom, then a cable pattern after that.
I hope this helps!
Thank-you :) Through explanations. Wish there were more "beginner's" tutorials ?
very good, thank you. this really helps, I keep going back to watch it.
Thank you so much for this tutorial ma'am, but I would really like your advice that for this particular pattern should always the Cable needle be turned towards the Front on Every 8th Row?. Am really looking forward to your Reply. Thanks once again!.
This is a front cross cable. Knitting patterns will specify whether in front. (And yes, it's every 8th row.)
Thanku dear.. I m a beginner.. and this is very helpful.. sending love from India
Let me know!
why or how do you do a reverse stokinette? i'm rather new to knitting but love your viideo and am willing to try but i the "reverse stokenette" i do not understand? any help appreciated thank you
thank u very much. it is very easy to understand row by row.l enjoyed it though i watch many vedio this is easy to understand. thank u again.
Glad it helped!
I thought cables were so much harder than this! I'll certainly be adding them to my next project!
Do it! They look great!
Thank you for your comment!
This was the best version Thank you
Would a popcorn stitch down the sides instead of stockinette prevent the scarf from rolling in on itself?
+steven groze It could, if you mean "seed stitch." This one doesn't roll so much as it's acrylic and been blocked. It's almost like fabric. :-)
I am new with this. Would you be able to write the instructions, so it make easy to follow. Thank you!
thank you... I have been banging my knitting needles over my head for the last three days trying to figure this out.
I'm glad the video helped! Happy Knitting!
How many rows do I do before I do the first cable?
Great video with very clear instructions! I managed to do my first cable after learning to knit in January. My only problem is that my swatch is curling on the sides, is this to do with the tension? Does anyone else have this issue? Otherwise it looks beautiful :)
Curling on the side is because of the stockinette stitch. You can block it flat or do a garter stitch border.
Could I use a needle that is the same size
Hello,
I have been trying to knit a scarf that involves a pattern with various cables, to form a reversible scarf. My point is that I have tried it with narrow (5mm) and wider (7mm) needles, and either way, I end up with holes where the '4' cables cross. What do you reccommend?
Thanks so much!!!
You might try posting your question on a Ravelry forum. I have a feeling it's a tension issue.
Happy knitting!
thank you very much, your video was great stuff you showed both cable and reverse side parts very very helpful huggs to you ;) happy knitting
I too would like to know where to find written instructions? maybe a scarf?
i am pretty new with knitting and i want to try the cable stitch. so far your video has made the most sense! i haven't tried to tackle it yet so wish me luck. quick question, if i want to do more than 26 stitches, say 30 or 40, what would the pattern be like?
Do you have the written instructions posted somewhere I can print it? I've dreamed of doing this.
Happy Knitting!
where could I get the written instructions for this stitch?
Thank you soo much! I could follow your teaching easily, but ma'am, should always the Cable Needle turned to the Front? Will the Pattern be the same one you have shown?? Am waiting for your reply ma'am. Thank You once again.
I noticed that knitters use different amount of rows before doing a cable --- what is the average amount of rows to knit before a cable row?
Good question! The knitting pattern will specify!
