this lovely lady is amazing, I started knitting 3 months ago and already made loads thanks to youtube. Her tutorials are great for knitting an entire project especially. Cable is not very difficult once you get the gist. Just stick to it, youtube is there to help you for any knitting problems.
I'm taking a knitting/crocheting class and enjoying it.I made a sweater in another class 18 years ago and now only am finishing it up.The teacher is helping me a little.I loved doing the cable stitch on my sweater also. The cable was easy for me to do.Crocheting is a little harder.
HI there i have been knitting for 55 yrs and love it,i am 64 now, also love cabling ...when i am cabling i do not slip the 3 stitches back on to the left needle,i was taught to just pass them down to the other end of the cable needle and knit them from that end ..onto the right hand needle.i've always done it that way...there are lots of types of cable needles,i use the double pointed end ones..but i do like the look of the hook ones, but once you have all sizes, seems pointless buying new designs...love the scarf design i.m going to do this for xmas presents xxx by the way i am still learning new things margaret xxx
Wow, someone who knits just like me. I am from the UK and my Gran taught me when I was nine. I have been knitting and crocheting for many years now. I recently decided to start cabling again. I just checked out your tutorial, thank you. You have managed to remind me of all the steps involved.
This is exactly what I was looking for. Your voice is so soft and a pleasure to listen to. Very well explained. The instructions were written too. It's what we call in French "cherries on the cake" Gonna make one right now for my one year grandson who will be wearing this scarf tomorrow. Thanks for sharing. Hugs xxx
This is so much easier. I watched another video demonstrating the same pattern, but that person knitted directly off of the cable needles, and now I know why my project got screwed up.
All the written instructions you need are in the description box below, so that you can work along with the video. Check out my facebook page and you will see that many other RUclips knitters have had wonderful results with the help of this video. One lady even made the most beautiful throw combining multiple panels of this knitting pattern. I do hope you give it another try, there are even free instructions ready to print out from my web site www.thecastingoncouch.com.
The pattern works in multiples of 13 sts (k9, p4), plus an axtra 4 sts to allow the edges to mirror. Three cables consist of 13 x 3 plus 4 = 43sts to cast on. Four cables consist of 13 x 4 + 4= 56. Written instructions can be found www.thecastingoncouch.com or in the description box. Good luck!
I will be adding more cabled and lace scarf knitting videos soon. I'm working out some interesting stitch combinations at the moment. I'm glad you have found my knitting tutorials helpful. Thanks for your post.
Thanks so much for this video. I learned how to cable knit from this and made 3 blankets using this pattern. I was wondering if you could do a tutorial on how to make a teapot cozy?
Thank you for the great tutorial and the written instructions! It was very easy to understand. I was able to finish the scarf on my own. Although I made my scarf more on the chunky side (by accident because I didn't know how to pick the yarns), I still love it!
Yes and if I am able to make this beautiful scarf, I don't know how to bind off with purling and knitting. I'll get help. I've just knitted and can bind off. I am new to this and excited!
Lightly spray your scarf at the end and set in position. Leave to dry over night. This helps with any curling. There should not be excessive curling. I would either go straight into pattern, or work out a rib pattern to begin and end the work, (still retaining the garter stitch to the selvedges). Good luck!
Hi Maureen My guess (without having seen it) is that you have repeated the same cabling row twice rather than alternating. It would only take one lapsed row to then throw out the whole pattern. To rectify this you will need to unravel back to the point where the cables were running in the same direction.
I've been wanting to do cabling for a while but thought it was going to be super hard. I've used a couple of your videos for projects and saw how easy you make everything so I've started a cable scarf. I just wanted to thank you, I'm terrible at reading patterns and I've found it very hard to find easy RUclips tutorials til I found your channel
Kim Smith - There are so many brilliant knitting channels out there, so it makes me really happy that you think my tutorials are nice and clear. Many thanks!
I see you use bamboo knitting needles. Are they better than plastic or metal ones? You made it so easy to understand. Thank you for sharing the video. Great job!
Oh I see what you mean! I went back through my work and saw where I had skipped a row, oops! Writing down my rows as I go along is a good idea, I wish I had thought of that before LOL. Thanks so much for being patient with my questions! :o)
Hi there, I've followed the pattern for the one column only and it worked out great, only the friend I'm making it for would prefer something slightly larger. It would be really great if you could share how I could increase it to 2 columns. I'm a beginner knitter and haven't gotten the hang of the math of knitting. Thanks so much.
You are welcome to use it as part of your news letter. All I ask is to be credited as the source. Nice looking web site by the way. I have just been ogling your 4ply yarn. Lovely colours. Thanks for your post.
i am not the teacher, but if you look closely, CF6 means take 3 Forward w the device she uses to knit them afterwards which is done during Row 3 and; CB6 (cable Back 6) means pick up 3 stitches and put them back behind the work to knit later. the 6 means that the total number swapped is 6. (just divide by 2.example: if it said C4F it would mean grab 2 ) hope that helps. watch the video she shows it... it took me a very long time for the knitting lightbulb to turn on, so no worries.. : )
Hi, I love your all patterns they are very pretty. Im a beginner so I am still learning :) I was wondering how many stitches I should cast on if I wanted to do half the size that you've done. So I'm guessing you'd only be able to fit one cable pattern along the scarf if I do that. I hope this makes sense. Thanks so much!
Hi, I am trying very hard to follow this pattern but I don't know what's happening with row 3, it's not ending only with p2 and k2... I repeated CF6,k3,p4 twice , and did the other one, exactly how it's said in the pattern I took from the website, and it's not working... Could you give any clue about what I may be doing wrong?
I'm going to try this pattern.. Good luck to me.. I'm a first timer knitter.. Got one question after I finishe the first row I'll repeat back to first row??
What do you think is causing my accidental stitch gain? Also, do you think this can be adapted to using knitting needles of smaller sizes? I'm fairly new to knitting, but this tutorial has been really helpful :)
Vilia Garcia - the pattern works in multiples of 13sts plus 4. I use 43sts on this scarf, so add 13sts for each additional plait or cable. Print off the written instructions: thecastingoncouch.com/assets/plaited-cable-scarf-free-pattern.pdf
Thank you for the swift reply, I will try it. I haven't knit in several years and I was looking for something to bring back my love for knitting. Thank you for inspiring me!
I've been knitting this on a smaller needle & yarn than her, (size 6 needles, I'm about 18 inches in now) and while this pattern is gorgeous and honestly not too hard once you memorize it, it's definitely tedious. Each 8 row set takes me about 45 minutes, only producing about an inch each set. Since a scarf should be made 60 inches, it's gonna take me like 45 hours to complete. TL,DR: great, fun, and easy once you get the hang of it, but don't expect this to be a scarf you can pump out in a week or so.
For one plaited cable cast on 13 to 17sts. The plaited cable itself takes 9 sts, then you will need 2 to 4 sts on either side of the plait to build the edges of the scarf, (this helps prevent the sides from curling).
This is going to be beautiful! I've watched several cable scarf videos and I'm a beginner. I learned you have to turn your work and do the reverse stitch and make the cables on the RS. You can't succeed w/o that. That can be disappointing.
Thanks for the response! For clarification, what do you mean by "alternating" the cabling row? When I get through with the 8-row pattern the first time, what does my next set start with? Sorry for all the questions, its my first time trying to knit with a cable pattern. *sadly starts unraveling work*
I've been looking for an easy instruction for cable knitting since i finished my first scarf and I am already psyched to try this pattern. I am actually considering to leave the bed just to get some chunky wool to get started. I do have to check, though. You said all the "wrong side rows will be stitched like row 2. So, am I right to think that actually, we have 15 rows, but the ones listed in the instructions are on the "right/starting side", while every other row will be stitched in row 2 style?
Hi....Have you printed off my free instructions from my web site thecastingoncouch.com? It is an 8 row repeat: Rows 1, 3, 5 and 7 are the right side rows that I demonstrate because they are the more active rows if you like. Rows 2, 4, 6 and 8 are wrong side rows that are repeats of row 2. Good luck!
Thank you, I checked the pattern online after I commented and then noticed what you meant. Thanks a lot. I'm really enjoying the tutorials. As others have already said, you have a very lovely voice to listen to. Maybe you should consider adio books. ;)
I just checked the web site. If you click on the image under the free patterns section it does work. It took afew seconds to load though. If you still have no joy, send me an email request and I will send the PDF file.
I would guess that you may be using a finer yarn, or that you could be knitting quite loosely? 100 per cent wool would give you the best definition. What yarn are you using and what size needles?
K2, p2, k9, p2, k2 for 1 repeat with 2 stitches on both sides set up for a garter stitch edge. So, for a blanket I'd see this as a multiple of 13 + 4. So for a scarf with only 2 panels of cable, co 30 stitches. For a blanket, make a swatch in the size yarn & needles you wanna use co 17sts, measure & then decide how wide you want it, then cast on in multiples of 13, then add the 4 stitches at the end. I'd cast on enough to get around 30 cables with the needles and yarn she's using in the video.
Beautiful, easy pattern - but, i'm having the hardest time completing without error. My thick, white yarn is thinning and becoming troublesome to work with. Unable to correct pattern without unraveling entire project. *is there a video on a successful way of correcting knit/purl/cable stitches? -Sage
Message for Meghan Arora - I would not recommend going any smaller than 4mm if you are a beginner. The accidental stitch gain may be due to not positioning the yarn correctly when working knit wise (after just completing a purl section). Remember to place the yarn to the back of the work when beginning a knit wise section. I would have liked to respond directly but find I have difficulty responding to linked comments.
Hello! Can you make a tutorial on how to make a bag out of this stitch. I have seen some bags that are made out of this stage. They are so beautiful. Thank you.
Hi, Im new at this, but cables scared me so much until I watched this video. I do have a question: I often see reference to wrong side and right side. How do you know which is which?
So how would you alter the pattern to include only two plaited cables. I'm still learning how to customize patterns...Would it be 9 sts for each cable plus 4 on either end equaling 26 sts to cast on? Or would I need maybe 4 more sts to make the spacing between the two cables equal...making it 30 sts?
Have you tried following the free knitting instructions to go with the video tutorial? You can print them directly from the web site.It may be worth watching the video again whilst having the written instructions to hand. Hope that helps!
I've only just started to teach myself how to knit. Just lookd at your knit pattern and noticed it says cast on 43 sets? Can you please explain what is meant by that? Thanks!
Have you printed off the knitting pattern instructions? See the web site. TIPS - Remember that rows 4 and 6 are the same as row 2. Make a note of each completed row as you go.Use the written instructions with the video guide until you get used to the pattern. Keep trying and you will be able to do this!
Hi, love this pattern but I'm confused... when you get to row 8, you knit it as row 2. Do you then go to row 1 and begin the repeat again? Thanks so much.
Yes work a total of 8 rows to complete one repeat and begin all over again. (All even rows ie rows 2,4,6 and 8 are worked as a row 2). See free written instructions from my web site for further information.
It's called The Encyclopedia of Knitting. I use it as a background. The Plaited Cable featured in the video is my own stitch combination and is not in the book. The Yarn is a 100% Wool called Freedom. It's by Twilleys.
One more question, i've done about 24 rows now and have noticed that the scarf is curling inwards. Is this normal or have I done something wrong? And can this be fixed without redoing it?
This may be a stupid question but at the start of the video you mention to put on 43 stitches and the patter goes per 17 stitches so to speak (13 for the cable and 4 for the edges). 17x2= 34 en 17x3=51....I can't seem to figure out why I have to put on 43 stitches xD Could you please explain :D Thanks alot!

I hope it turned out well and that your grandson appreciates all your hard work! If you get chance send me a picture to my new facebook page.
Thank you for this video and pattern on your site. I am a beginner and your instructions so are clear. Please continue with your great content!
Thanks because with these instructions I learned to read patterns in english, and the scarf is so beautiful =)
I love this plaited cable scarf too! It really isn't as hard as it looks when you give it a try.
Wow, honestly never thought I could manage something like this. This tutorial is perfect.

+The Casting On Couch NOW I get it :) Many thanks :D!
The Casting On Couch
So if we would want to reduce the number of cables to 2. It would be 13x2+4= 30 cast on? And we just follow the pattern. Is that correct?
I will be adding more cabled and lace scarf knitting videos soon. I'm working out some interesting stitch combinations at the moment. I'm glad you have found my knitting tutorials helpful. Thanks for your post.
Thank so much for making these videos! I am self taught and had no idea how to knit cables!
Thank you ! Love your channel/tutorials.
Greetings from Brazil! I love the way you knit, it´s easy to understand specially when you are just a begginer.
I love all your videos an I have all your patterns, I cant wait to try this one m please keep making more videos.
i tried this out. its not hard. i love it. thanks a lot for the video
late to the party but a million thank you‘ s! this is my first cable project and it’s working up so nicely :)

You are welcome to use it as part of your news letter. All I ask is to be credited as the source.

super easy to understand tutorial !! thank you !! subscribing to your channel

I love your tutorials. you make everything so easy...
But i keep unravelling... I must practise practise practise...:)
Figen Figen - Many thanks. Glad you like them. You will master this one I am sure.....you seem very determined!
Lovely cable stitch....what is the name of your book...love stitch books....thanks for sharing

I love this pattern and tutorial! Thank you for sharing and teaching me. Any recommendations on how I can make this into a wrap or wider scarf?
Vilia Garcia - the pattern works in multiples of 13sts plus 4. I use 43sts on this scarf, so add 13sts for each additional plait or cable. Print off the written instructions: thecastingoncouch.com/assets/plaited-cable-scarf-free-pattern.pdf
Thank you for the swift reply, I will try it. I haven't knit in several years and I was looking for something to bring back my love for knitting. Thank you for inspiring me!
Hello, your video tutorials are great. What is the title of the knitting pattern book beneath the working piece in this video?
Thank you ! This is turning out rather well
IS THIS CABLE REVERSIBLE FOR THE SCARF ?
THANKS A LOT.
I LOVE YOUR TUTORIALS
It’s not reversible. It has a definite right and wrong side. Good luck!
If the yarn you have works with your 7.5mm needles, this cabled scarf pattern will be fine. It will be a tiny bit narrower that's all.
Nice and easy, thanks
Adriana Stroze So glad you found it easy! ♥️ ♥️ ♥️
I love your accent
Love this Pattern , I think I can do this ! ♥
It is an 8 row repeat:
Rows 1, 3, 5 and 7 are the right side rows that I demonstrate because they are the more active rows if you like.
Maybe you should consider adio books. ;)

I would guess that you may be using a finer yarn, or that you could be knitting quite loosely? 100 per cent wool
would give you the best definition.
I'd cast on enough to get around 30 cables with the needles and yarn she's using in the video.
would have loved to see the finished result
Beautiful, easy pattern - but, i'm having the hardest time completing without error. My thick, white yarn is thinning and becoming troublesome to work with. Unable to correct pattern without unraveling entire project. *is there a video on a successful way of correcting knit/purl/cable stitches? -Sage
I was just wondering if you could please tell me the name of the book that you have in this video as it looks very interesting?
it is very attractive, but what it means : CF6 and CB6 ?
thank you very much teacher
Message for Meghan Arora - I would not recommend going any smaller than 4mm if you are a beginner. The accidental stitch gain may be due to not positioning the yarn correctly when working knit wise (after just completing a purl section). Remember to place the yarn to the back of the work when beginning a knit wise section. I would have liked to respond directly but find I have difficulty responding to linked comments.
cannot access web page to get written pattern for this scarf
Hello! Can you make a tutorial on how to make a bag out of this stitch. I have seen some bags that are made out of this stage. They are so beautiful. Thank you.
Can you please do a video using worsted weight yarn please?
im curious about that neat lil book you have:)
I'm considering including the full tea slurping sound effects on my next video!
It's terrible being a tea addict you know
Ah the video makes the written work make much more sense !!!!
I was wondering if you could do this with way less stitches?
Thanks
I love this pattern! Is there a hat pattern to go with it?
I have one worked out but have yet to film it.
Hi, Im new at this, but cables scared me so much until I watched this video. I do have a question: I often see reference to wrong side and right side. How do you know which is which?
I understand, thank you very much TahitianBliss :)
great share!
The recommended yarn in the instructions say one that is for 8mm to 10mm needle size. The largest ones I have are 7.5 mm, would that be a problem?
it's beautiful... thanxx
Have you tried following the free knitting instructions to go with the video tutorial? You can print them directly from the web site.It may be worth watching the video again whilst having the written instructions to hand. Hope that helps!
from what book are you stitching from ? if you have any books you can refer to invest in, i would appreciate. #enjoyed the tutorial. TX
When you come to the end of a row and ie. you don’t have enough stitches to finish knit 9 do you just go ahead with the purl 2 knit 2
The written pattern is abbreviated and states to cast on 43 sts (which means cast on 43 stitches, not sets). Hope that helps.
It's called The Encyclopedia of Knitting. I use it as a background. The Plaited Cable featured in the video is my own stitch combination and is not in the book.
The Yarn is a 100% Wool called Freedom. It's by Twilleys.
Who is the book written by?
@@fromafar217 Odhams Encyclopaedia Of Knitting by James Norbury and Margaret Agutter
Good day, what book were you using in the background? I am looking for a good knitting book. Thank you.
If I wanna make a blanket out of it, I'm just gonna multiply the number of stitches, right?
Hi I would like to do a scarf with 56 stitches do I follow the instructions as given for 43 stitches
