My mother (would be over 100 if living) would bend a double-pointed needle to make her cable needle. She bend it into a fairly tight U-shape in such a way that one end was longer than the other. When it was time to knit the stitches that were on the cable needle, she would knit those stitches directly from the cable needle -- i.e. she did not transfer the stitches back to the left-hand needle. Women of that era had to be resourceful since they did not have access to the gadgets available today :) Thanks Mom for your patience in teaching me to knit.
Jo-Ann, I enjoyed your video. Here is the tip that I use :) Because there is an "F" in the word leFt.....F/front. Because there is an "R" in the word Right.........R/Rear. (same principle for M!L/M1R)
I ❤ your step by step instructions & illustrations. Nice & slow! Thank-you for that. I'm just a beginner & sometimes arnt quick to pick up things. I have saved you tutorial to my play list so can refer to it anytime
Thank you so much for your very clear explanation and instructions! I purchased a kit to make my husband a fisherman’s sweater. It came from Ireland and it’s way more advanced in knitting skill than anything I’ve ever done before. I studied the pattern for a long time before I decided I needed to make a chart, which took hours! But I was still unclear about how to do the cable stitches. There are some mistakes in the pattern, and your video helped me to understand how to correct them! You’re a great teacher!
You can also do the first technique with a doible pointed needle- no need to buy a cable specific needle. I go up one gauge so i dont have to worry about it falling
I found you on my RUclips suggestions and boy did they get it right! You are an excellent teacher. I particularly appreciate the way you demonstrate in both left and right handed styles because I am right handed but I knit left handed and some pattern instructions are more difficult for me to figure out. I also often find my ideas for my work on Pinterest where it's often difficult to find the written pattern, so I have to figure it out by looking at the picture only, then write the pattern for myself. Thank you for your great suggestions of different ways to do this also.

Thank you for explaining cables in such a simple and distinctive way!!! I appreciate your explanation of a graphed cable and your free guides sooo helpful!! I will definitely be following you for help in my knitting journey!!❤
Thank you for your easy to follow instruction! I am learning to read my knitting and matching it to the pattern, this was very helpful💖. I do watch at least one ad on your videos, & always thumbs up to help your algorithm.
Am I famous now? 😂 So happy to have new tricks for a motif that I love! I’m going to be a brave girl and cast on a cable-heavy Marie Wallin pattern soon(ish) and I need to practice before I dig in 😬
I learn so much from your videos. I have crocheted since I was a pre-teen but always had the hankering to knit, it is a texture thing for me, touch and visual. I have been learning to knit from the internet and books, none of my friends or acquaintances knit or crochet.(sorry for the long winded story...) I always let cables defeat me in the past but with your help I now feel I can ace them...with some practice 😊. Thank you!! I would also like to see the pattern for the swatches in the background of this video...the X,O swatch really caught my eye. I am thinking a project of swatches with different cable patterns in each?
Another factor in yarn choice is the number of plies. 3 or 4 ply yarns have a more rounded cross section compared to 2 ply yarns. Because of that, they make cables pop more. They hold their shape rather than flattening out. Great video, thanks!
I have also used as cable needles: toothpick, bamboo skewer (BBQ removed and cleaned), ink cartridge refill for a pen, a pencil, a T-pin and a tapestry needle. 😂 I have tried to knit cables without a cable needle, but it wasn’t pretty. I prefer a cable needle that grabs the yarn so it can’t slip off.
Your timing with this tutorial is incredible! Stephen West just hinted that we will need cable needles for the MKAL that starts in October. Thank you for showing how to do these. I really love the different ways you did your samples in white. So lovely! 🙂
After following a pattern and setting the first cables, I don't remember any sayings, I cross one index finger over the other in whichever way the previous cable is oriented and immediately know whether it's first stiches to the back or first stiches to the front front. Be right back is fine but then I have to remember the direction of right.
Hey..is there any trick to increase the width of the complete sweater...I have knited the sweater with soo much hard work and Ig now it is short...can I increase the width ?
I was searching for advise how to make that last knit stich before the next being purl more tight - and that tip to purl the next stich in a twisted way and the in the next row on wrong side to knit it thru the back loop totally works! but is there a similar way if we are knitting in the rounds?
Try to intentionally relax your hands when knitting (it takes work - but I'm a former too-tight knitter so it can be done!). Also - yarn choice matters. A wool or acrylic yarn has more elasticity than other fibers so will be easier on the hands.
The pattern you are using should specify how it should be worked. My guess is that it is two stitches held to the back on a cable needle, knit one stitch, then knit the two stitches from the cable needle.
Hello! I've just found this great video and subscribed. I see in the background that you have an off-white colored blanket, that begins with about 8-10 rows of seed stitch, and when you get to the cabling, there is no "rippling" of the border. I just bought a lovely pattern to make a cable baby blanket, but the seed stitch border is all bunchy and ripply. Years ago (like 35) I made fisherman knit baby blankets for my children, and nieces and nephew, but I can't find the pattern. The seed stitch border didn't bunch up like this new pattern I just bought. Do you have a pattern for a baby blanket that I can buy? Without the rippling in the border?
I don't have any patterns for blankets. The blanket you see in the background is this pattern: www.lionbrand.com/products/knitting-pattern-treasured-heirloom-baby-blanket-1
You stated there was a pattern you could download to follow you but I could not find it, can you help? I am new at cable knitting and would enjoy following. Thank you
Literally crying here. Been knitting for 8 years and decided to finally delve into cables. A hot mess is an understatement. When i try to knit my stitches off the cable needle they are too tight, they get twisted something awfulmand fall off the cable. I am using the plastic one with the little dip in the center. If I try to put the stitches back onto my needle they either twist up or fall off completely and start to unravel. I am cable-handicapped and cable cursed. 😢
Thank you! I ordered an almost straight wooden set from an artisan on Amazon. They are just ever so slightly wider at the ends and about 4 inches long. What a game changer!!!! I was able to make 4 earwarmers in 4 different cable patterns and now am ADDICTED to cabling. I love cabling now and found this video extremely useful. Saved to favorites playlist! ❤❤❤
And p.s. I am able to knit right off the cable needle without sliding them back onto my keft knitting needle! How clever! Love your be RIGHT BACK. I use that with M1R all the time! (I LEFT thru the FRONT door for M1R works for right leaner cables too) More ❤❤❤❤ 4 U

Your mom sounds very resourceful! And what a beautiful memory of her. ❤️
Thank you for this information. I learned the saying “Be right back, I left the front door open” for increases. It also works for cables. ;)
Oh, I like that! I'm definitely going to have to remember that one.

Don’t be LEFT BEHIND, be RIGHT IN FRONT! This also works when skipping sts to cable with out a cb
Great way to remember!

Good trick! I have difficulty counting cable rows. Never thought of the reverse stocking stitch. Da. Thanks.

So is braided yarn even better or not particularly?
@@snokful It should also maintain a nice round cross section, making cables stand out.
Thank you for your much needed cable knitting tips. I have already knitted cables but I need to learn more techniques.
Glad it was helpful!
This was a very wonderful way of teaching. Thank you.
Thank you!

In my head it is always Be Right Back for cables and Right REAR (pick up ) for M1s and LEFFFFT FRONT for both cables and M1s
Thank you, excellent video!!

I learned so much. I cable but now I know how to do them better. Thankyou.

Thank you! 😃
I downloaded your free pattern. Thank you very much. 😍
You're welcome!
Thanks for the information. Have one more question. Does a set up row count as first row of cable pattern
It can - really depends on the specific pattern.
Please share more different cables thank you
So very beautiful ❤
Thank you for the wonderful tutorial
Please can you teach is how to do the XOXO cable that was on your table in cream 🙏🏻💕 please
There are lots of tutorials online for that - you just have to do an internet search!
Great video.
Could you not put the stitches onto a DPN and then knit them off the DPN?? Just that seems easier than putting them back on the needle ❤❤
You can definitely use a DPN!
This is wonderful, thank you thank you!
You're very welcome!

Same thing - just purl it through the back loop.
What are some ways to knit more loosely? I tried an all over cable hat and had to quit because my hands were sore.
Try to intentionally relax your hands when knitting (it takes work - but I'm a former too-tight knitter so it can be done!). Also - yarn choice matters. A wool or acrylic yarn has more elasticity than other fibers so will be easier on the hands.
Can you knit along side cable besides cables
Yes, cables can be side-by-side without any extra stitches in between - it creates a whole new cable!
Thank you so much
I would like to know how to do a right slant 3 please. I'm stuck.
The pattern you are using should specify how it should be worked. My guess is that it is two stitches held to the back on a cable needle, knit one stitch, then knit the two stitches from the cable needle.

What did you do for the return/wrong side rows?
Just knitting and purling. In many cable patterns, the wrong-side rows are 'rest' rows where you knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches.
I’m looking for a yoga mat strap pattern
I like the XOXO cable. Where did you get the directions for it?
I think I found it in Barbara Walker's 'A Treasury of Knitting Patterns'

I can get the cables . What I have trouble with is at the beginning it puckers up they do not lay flat how do you fix that
Cables do that along edges.
Literally crying here. Been knitting for 8 years and decided to finally delve into cables. A hot mess is an understatement. Take it slow, loosen up your stitches and try a different cable needle. You can do it!
