The fact that wright only concedes when he finds the "no no, he's right" evidence is the best

Request: Are hot dogs a sandwich?

He claims that "sandbox" is distinct from open-world, but how is that so? Sandbox can be summarized as "open world, do what you want", no? That said I do believe open-world is not exactly a genre, simply because defining it is fundamentally arbitrary as no matter how large it is it is at the end of the day a map with boundaries. There is no fundamental difference between it and being able to wander around just a small house.

weren't sandbox games originally more about the physics based mechanics?

@@mrfro3354 I'd say that's too vague of a distinction, since every game is going to have some sort of percieved purpose as long as interaction (even through pure visual exploration) is even possible. Regardless of your intentions for how you perform within a sandbox that does not change the fact that it is set within a non-linear map. It's the difference between Half-Life and Gmod.

It is distinct because you can have a Sandbox game without it being open-world. Sandbox games are more defined by the use of objects and the physics surrounding them, and the lack of an end goal, not the setting. One of the earliest sandbox games only had a single screen to play in, but had many materials that all interacted with eachother and the environment in different ways. You can have an open-world without a sandbox, and a sandbox without an open world. As such, They are seperate.
