Awesome job completing the collection of playsets, Joey. You have the best vintage SW channel out there. There is no shame in being a Padawan. The Sears Cantina Adventure Set is among my top 10 favorite playsets that holds a place of honor in my collection.

The Sears/JC Penney Wishbooks! Talk about a yearly highlight in my childhood in the 80's. I can vividly remember waiting for this book to hit our mailbox each year, and the joy I would get flipping through to the toy sections to see what was being offered.
I remember my folks ordering from those and we would go down to the local Sears/JC Penney store to pick up the items once they arrived.
I recall a few occasions where the items never stocked and were thus canceled. Talk about heartbreak. 😢.
Always interesting to get a history on all of our favorite Star Wars items, thanks for doing the hard work and compiling all the research for us Joey. 👍
By the way, I also bid on that Cantina playset instruction sheet, and was outbid as well. 😅. Looks like neither of us got it unfortunately. Maybe next time - and hopefully we won't be bidding against each other.
I think that the price you paid was fair for this Joey. 👍

@@thepadawancollectorofficial Haha - yeah, this one was pretty low until just the last minute or two. I capped out at $105, thinking for sure I would get it for that price or less. I was surprised that I was outbid. Hopefully we'll both find it for much cheaper than that in the future. 😉

The promotion worked so well that now those certificate/stands are worth a small fortune.
Considering what was going on in the late 70's, Kenner did a great job with the Star Wars line. The first truly successful movie-based toy line.
It's amazing how fortunes have changed for Sears. They went from the biggest retailer of the 70's and earlier to now being out of business. I worked for them back in the early 90's and had a good time working in the electronics department.
Great deep dive into the Cantina Adventure Set! I didn't know about the history of the belt buckle on the Snaggletooth figures! Very interesting!
I got the four pack from JCPenny's as a kid, but never got the Cantina Adventure set from Sears. Kinda surprising considering that my family shopped at Sears a lot back then and I'm sure that I circled the set in the Sears catalog. :)
It's a hard to find set in great shape and for an affordable price.
I'm not surprised that the POP was cut out considering how most of us kids cut those things out and mailed them in to get the exclusive mail-away figures back then. Another good idea that Kenner had.
I agree that Iain's Displays is a great company to get stuff from. He's a swell guy to chat with on Facebook too.
    Great video!

Thanks John and thanks for your insights as to where you and your family shopped. I remember going to Sears to buy the big things with my dad, like BBQers, Lawnmowers, and refrigerators. I never thought of them as having a toy section for some reason. For that there was toys R US - even JC Penny I never thought of as a toy store. Going there meant school clothes lol

@@thepadawancollectorofficial You bet! Where I grew up in Western Nebraska, we didn't have very many hobby or toy stores, and none were nearby where we lived. The only stores that my family went to that carried toys were Sears, K-Mart and Gibsons Discount Center. The last one never had any of the new toys back then. They didn't have a lot year-round, but when November came around, lots of stores had toys - especially the hot toys of the year like Star Wars was starting in 78. Even Wheelers - the local hardware store had a few. Sears really became a good toy store then with a whole section devoted to Star Wars. It was the only big department store other than K-Mart in our area, so they got sent a lot of stuff. You could see almost every Star Wars toy that was in the catalog in person in the store during that time. Our K-Mart had a pretty good toy aisle in November too. That's where I got my first Star Wars action figure: C3PO from.
I do remember going to a Toys R Us in Denver, I think in 1979, when I had to go there to see medical specialists. I was wowed by the massive displays! I'd never seen an entire store devoted to toys before.
In 1980, a local guy started his own version of Toys R Us called "Sir Jim's Hobby and Toy Castle' in a much closer town than Denver. In my eyes, it was even better because he made it look just like a medieval castle inside and out. Even had crenulated walls, a turret on top and a little moat with a drawbridge in front. I wish I could find pictures of it somewhere because in my memory, it was incredible. He had everything in there from parts to build and repair firearms and bows to model rockets to model trains, kits, to little kids toys. I found the best model rocket kits for 4-H there as a kid as well as getting to see every Star Wars toy available as they came out, along with all the other toy lines. By the time I went to college, he had had to sell the place and shrunk his business down to a tiny little store front downtown.
      Good times!

I think you paid a fair price. I bought one a year ago for a little over $700. It had no insert but did have the instructions. It also had the blue Snaggletooth and the pegs were loose. I'm done collecting the playsets now too, except I still need a box for the 2nd edition Jabba Dungeon. Also I have not yet delved into Palitoy as you have! Toasting you with a cup of tea!

Brother, I love these videos because you provide information about a figure or a play set, historical information about their background stories, and how life was at that time in America. The price was excellent and as it was the last play set missing from your collection it was worth it!
Next step, let's go hunting for some ships and vehicles!!

Great playset/ display stand. The Sears cardboard Cantina and Cloud City are personal favorites but much too rare and Expensive 💰 for me to acquire. I settled for very nice facsimile copies of each set I acquired on eBay which were very reasonably priced. ($22 - Cantina) They are NOT authentic - but they allow me to display my collection on realistic copies without having to spend a small fortune to obtain originals. All the other plastic playsets are much easier to obtain at a reasonable cost. 💲

I think as far as Kenner were concerned, the push to get product into the shops by Holiday '77 was because they were worried that the comparatively untested Star Wars might be a flash in the pan and forgotten about, especially by Holiday '78, before they could get any amount of product to market.
    They needn't have worried... 😂

  • @tperson8347

I don't think that playset was too expensive.
    Definitely not Jawa dropping. ;)
I'd say this is more of a backdrop than a display stand.
To me, a display stand is hard plastic base with or without figure pegs.
    Thanks for going over this
    Thanks for the video

Great description and storytelling! Now, If they did not change the box art for the 1979 version, and it is still sealed, how do I know if it has the blue snags or the red snags?

    • @thepadawancollectorofficial
      @thepadawancollectorofficial  2 месяца назад +1

Great question, and at that point you would have to do an x-ray if the box. I have seen examples where CAS has done that for some collectors.
