all over the world, this has become an issue especially in major coastal cities. Seoul, Tokyo, shanghai, Paris, London, NYC, LA due to low paying jobs versus high cost of living. not being able to afford the rent is mostly the issue, causing children to live longer and longer with their parents.
Yep and it’s done on purpose. Part of the globalists’ depopulation agenda. Make housing unaffordable for locals but import third world immigrants and give them free housing while making locals work long hours for low wages
Agree, I live in central Europe (Austria) and it's the same. My sis and her bf can't afford having kids & at this point with inflation they can barely afford rent. It's hard at the moment :(
@Rick&Morty I'm trying to stay at my parents house as long as possible, but they live on the countryside.. Once I'm done with my university course and start working I might have to move to the city for a job :(
This is a false assumption, affordable housing or more income does not result in more babies or marriages. Look at any poor demographic or country, they have too many children (they need welfare, or migrate to richer countries). Meanwhile rich people with demanding careers tend to wait too long before settling into marriage, women in their 30s pay to freeze their eggs, refuse to settle for not perfect spouse. It’s counter intuitive and doesn’t seem to make logical sense why rich people and countries have too few children when they can afford to. It’s because The reasons why rich and poor have babies differ. Poor women often don’t have career opportunities or education so they are more willing (often) to settle for a husband of economic stability, meanwhile career women don’t need men and only marry if they want to (not have to). And they don’t have a need to rush marriage until their ability to get pregnant runs out (around mid 30s). When it comes to developing 3rd world countries why they have too high birth rate. Often these countries lack female rights and empowerment. Women can’t decide to go for a career or get higher education. So like in ancient times, they need marriages for survival. They can marry for love and emotions but in ancient times that wasn’t the primary reason for marriages.
The housing crisis is definitely a reason for why I'm suspicious of having kids, I feel like it's a lot more expensive and scarier to raise kids these days (the pandemic, the war, global warming, etc.).
That makes logical sense but when South Korea had over population, it was a much poorer country. I think like Europe or Japan, throwing money at low birth rate will have opposite than intended results. This may be uncomfortable but it’s female empowerment that is the main cause. Low birth rate or shrinking population can be a worth while price to pay for gender equality but let’s not ignore facts. Old generation Korean women had no rights to work (with few exceptions) so their best prospects were to find a quality husband or even any husband that can provide and become mothers. Marriage was more about survival and livelihood than emotions or looks or romance.

Setting aside the fact that more than 11 million people are likely homeless, jobless and starving and, the fact that a lot of Russia's neighbors are nervous as hell that have nuclear weapons...Ukraine provided 50% of the world's sunflower oil supply, 10% of the world's grain supply and 13% of the world's corn supply. A lot of people aren't having children not just because they can't afford it but because they're thinking of the harm that might befall future generations because of the current generation's irresponsibility. Go ahead and keep thinking that you're the "mature" one in this, though.
It’s interesting for sure. I believe that many people in the past also didn't want to have kids but were pressured by society. When I look at my dad and other men his generation (boomers), most of them have zero interest in babies and small kids and downright avoid them/leave the room/hate them for being loud and annoying. I don't think it's THAT weird to not want/like kids. It's always been part of humans.
@abc68099 Agree 100%. Actually my mom has told me multiple times that she would've left my dad were it not due to financial reasons (he wouldn't have given her the house/property, and back then in Southern Europe, divorce law wasn't that fair, so you really just lost most of your stuff if you wanted to leave).

Putting women in the workforce beginning in the 60s or so reduced the price of labor and inflated everything. Most people are too blind too that, they don't want to admit that men and women are not equal, nothing in the universe is equal but everything has a function in this universe machine, when you force equality in the universe, you will have a disaster. Imagine if planet earth said, am equal to planet Jupiter because liberals say so and then decided to orbit in Jupiter's orbit, it would be swallowed up in no time and the whole solar system would become destabilized and you would have collisions and probably more planets would end up being thrown out of the system.
@@wamnicho There’s never a balance, but women in the workforce isn't a problem. Ur dismissing women who became doctors, scientists, educators amongst other very important positions. We have a lot to contribute to society so blaming us for inflation isn't fair. Everything can be affordable and livable if the people who run the country weren't so damn greedy. At the end of the day, it all comes down to greed, not the gender of who is working. They just want to use the excuse and blame women when their decision for greed gets out of hand and hurts the people.
It doesn't. Modern society has created a lot of situations that are just un-natural. Compared to historical life in villages. All of the stress, gatekeeping, and neglect ("You're on your own.") A lot of Korean men expect their wives to make these sacrifices. It’s a patriarchal society. The women do almost everything in the home, raising kids, and if needed, work too. So of course when faced with these options, why would a woman want to choose that life? It’s like a life of servitude.

The "asking your dating situation" thing is so common here in Italy. Maternity leave is mandatory but companies know how to skirt laws and are able to change schedules in order to force the new moms to quit from the job. 10 years ago it was common for women to sign pre-made forms of resignation that went into effect when the employee became pregnant. At the same time the government is railing about the declining birth rate and whatnot. Pure hypocrisy.

They make it so difficult for women to survive. Every country does this, discriminating against women because they fear having to pay maternity leave. It even harms childfree women. Men endlessly complain now that they are discriminated against but they don't know the meaning of the word. It makes me so angry.
Materialistic attitude toward life in combination with patriarchal tradition and comparison culture in which you constantly compare yourself with what others have and with what others expect of you - that is the cause of sub-1.0 fertility rate in Korea in my opinion. The fact that the society is not changing itself to solve the fertility problem is what amazes me. They would rather self-destruct themselves than change themselves. Some deep soul searching is due in the Korean society as a whole, I submit.
I totally agree. Even at current 0.7 birth rate, all that happens is yet another "task force" and a small increase in child stipend. The birth rate has been low for 13-14 years now. Yet, it's an astonishingly unimportant political and social topic, given the gravity.
17:00 That makes my blood boil. I have a rule that if I'm not being paid for the work, I'm going home. No over-time pay? You best believe I'm out the door at 6:00pm sharp. As someone who’s absolutely not interested in having kids it’s interesting to hear why people around the world don’t want them. Edit: if countries want women to give birth they need to treat women with respect and give them time to heal and figure out a childcare plan for their babies. I’m really tired of society and workplaces treating birth like it’s no big deal. The fact Korean companies penalize women for taking maternity leave right there would be more then enough to deter people from starting a family. It’s so backwards.
Trust me you got it all wrong. Studies and statistics have shown married couples on average have about 2 children. There is no such thing as married couples not having children because of finances or lack of time. What is actually true is people aren't getting married, it is getting less and less. People need to fix the dating scene in these countries. Also the problem is also not couples choosing not to get married, actually the amount of couples unmarried is in decline. Everything is in decline, co-habitation, sexual partners, number of dates, etc.
Well I’ve always thought that you need to have a reason to have kids not for not having them, for example you just like kids or something. When somebody asks me why I don’t have kids it’s as if asking me why I don’t have a horse. I have nothing against horses but having a horse just haven’t came to my mind even once in my life. I have a husband, I own an apartment, I have a job… but kids? Why do I need them for? People in previous generations just have kids because they didn’t have a choice. Contraception wasn’t simply that developed. We have a choice. We can have kids and we can as well live without them. I think in this situation is more important to have reasons to have kids, to change something. Otherwise you can just live the way you used to.
@@agatuuut Statistic show that when people are married they have slight about 2 kids on average. This would be enough to keep the population stable. So the problem isn't married people not having enough kids the problem is people are getting married less and less. But I think South Korea may have both problems. South Korea low birth rate is extremely low it is an outliner. The society or culture there needs deep reflection to solve this problem. I think one of the problems is businesses there having too much power over workers, this influences and changes the culture of korean life. In Korean they think they need to get hire by big companies or it is like they are a failure. It is probably the big businesses promoting this type of culture.
If you want to be able to decide not to have kids and not be pressured into it by society despite it being so necessary that women take on that responsibility then you can't also complain when companies want to make sure that you are committed to being a career woman when they hire you. You shouldn't expect to have it both ways and act like people are being disgusting to you for your own decisions. And if you want to be a mom you should forget about having some big important (meaningless) career and do it when you are young so your kid doesn't develop autism or all the other shit plaguing kids because women think it's fine to just start a family when they're over 30 now.
@@ickyfist Some do not 'try to have it both ways'. You try to sound reasonable, but the 'despite it being so necessary that women take this responsibility' gives you away mate. Thank you for creating this video. I’ve been interested in Korean culture for a while. It’s surprising just how education is such a priority (as it should anywhere) that you spend extra hours studying after school and then don’t get home until late in the evening. And also how many hours people spend working at their company to where they don’t have time to see their family. I spent time in Germany, where they have a good work/life balance and you’d think that would be considered common sense to have everywhere. I’ve had the chance to talk to a few Koreans here in the US and they concur with what you say that people in Korea spend too much time in either school or work and they say how more relaxed it is here.
germany is 3.5 times bigger than south korea, with a population only 1.6 times bigger, not to mention that 40% of germany are inhabitable plain, korea only has less than 20%, what makes it even worse for korean people is that they dont have natural resources, no minery, no oil, no soil, everything dependent on importing, that makes their cost of living unnaturally high and their life quality, vulnerable. also germany produces the most valuable industrial products on earth----automobile, with very least to none competitor, but what of korea? their economy highly depends on semiconductor, with potent competitors, and what make it worse is that big corporations in korea are held by foreign investors such as wall street people, korean people dont work for themselves, they work for the US. so of course german people possess more resource per capita than korean, of course they can have work/life balance.
@@namingshard17 I don’t see how Germany’s work/life balance has to do with being a bigger country (both in size and population). Germany’s economy is the 5th largest in the world and the largest in the EU, yet they’re still able to do so without working their people to death. Germany has been going green and has shut down their coal mines and oil production. While it sounds nice in theory, it means that they’re dependent on importing Russian oil (which has been problematic since their involvement in Ukraine over the past few months). Germany is known for its automobile such as Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz and Audi. But Korea has an automobile industry with Hyundai. Samsung has also become a successful international company. So the argument that Koreans can’t get much time off to enjoy life doesn’t seem to add up.
@@kyrohowe3156 I’ve traveled around the country. I enjoy so many things about it. In terms of living, I was in Berlin. And I don’t know if I was living in Germany or living in Berlin. Yes, I know that Berlin is in Germany. But Berlin has such a special place in my heart. I find it to be a vibrant city where you can find anything that interests you. It’s so spread out. There are so many trees, so many parks and so many open spaces that you forget that you’re in a city of 3 and a half million people. For someone like myself who’s really into history, Berlin is such an amazing city to be in. It’s incredible what the city went through in the 20th century. It has also attracted so many young people from around the world.
I think people should not be rushing to make kids in their 20's unless you have a stable life, job and maybe have a proper house that won't send you under. It's not a race, especially when many people make dumb decisions in their 20's and end up divorcing after getting kids. @@nxmir6126 most people would be fine giving birth in their early 30’s. Most women in my family gave birth after the 35 mark and they were fine. Trying to speedrun bringing a kid into the world before having an established life is just terrible.
The "truth" behind Korea's low birth rate is fairly simple. And it has to do with like 90% cultural norms rather than it actually being impossible. The biggest "realistic" issue is the housing market, and even then most people just can't imagine having children without owning an expensive apartment with a Mercedes Benz as their car. That is a cultural issue, because parents don't want to live in more affordable housing (which does exist: although still expensive.) because they're afraid they'll be "judged." Second, as mentioned before - 90% of the issues stemming from low birth rates are due to cultural factors, not that it's impossible. After school programs, private education, post-pregnancy centers, all these things are unnecessary costs parents add on and include in their calculations when raising children - but what is the point of all these things when all you're doing is limiting your child to Korean society & Korean companies when they grow up? You're basically setting them up for failure even with the "highest" quality education. A much more sensible approach would be to save all that private education money and send them abroad to study at any university (provided you teach them English from young age), alternatively have them pick up a trade skill and not be stuck in the Korean rat race education system. This issue bothers me because people blame Korea's economy for raising kids, when it is in fact cultural and up to each and every individual to not blindly follow the system which has more flaws than good. The reward for spending this much money unnecessarily is not worth it, your kid will end up miserable in a Korean company either way. It's always better to look for alternative routes, and let them have their childhood.
@@sijiaxie3438 Yes, China may have the same issues. Although people should not confuse Korea's situation with the rest of the world. For example, a higher cost of living is a natural deterrent to not have kids (as most of the world is going through right now). However, with that taken out of the equation, the reasons people choose not to have kids in Korea have more to do with the reasons I mentioned above, and not necessarily due to rising costs of living.
I think we have to face facts. Most people don't have careers. They have jobs. Most jobs DO NOT require college education in fact on the job experience is going to be more likely better time spent than studying. Who looks better on paper? A person with 4-5 years experience or a fresh graduate with no job experience? Most of the stuff you learn in college you can now learn through youtube videos and internet and/or books. Trade skills are going to be the next big thing in the next 20 years. Everyone wants cushy deskjobs so the pay will be so low with everyone applying. But the dirty jobs no woman wants to do is going to be where it is at.
There's more to the housing crisis than just immigration to Seoul from other cities. While there's a lot of demand to live in Seoul, Seoul City's population is actually slightly down over the last several years. And apartment prices over the last decade in secondary cities like Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, Sejong, Jeju, and even Incheon are up a lot over the last decade; not just Seoul. 1. Big decline in construction of new housing, largely due to various supply-restriction policies put in place by the former president, late President Noh, and the late former Seoul mayor. 2. Interest rates stayed way too low for way too long. 3. Jeonse loans are ridiculously subsidized by the government, effectively pushing up housing prices. In my opinion, jeonse should simply be ended in favor of monthly rent, as in most countries. My final bit is that it sure doesn't help the birth rate when stewards, stewardesses, and other passengers on SRT, KTX, Korean Air, Asiana, even the bus immediately get mad if you have a baby that's crying or a toddler whining.
The housing market is actually crashing in Korea, my apartment in Seoul went down by $750k. Busan housing prices are also crashing - they built too many apartments in Haeundae with not enough ppl. Its a buyers market right for now.

It's so sad that people are implicitly forced to work long hours. It's already proven to be useless. Experiments with 6 hour workdays were successful and people achieve the same or more in much less time than Korea or Japan for example. I hope this information will inspire more companies or governments worldwide. But change comes slowly, especially in highly conservative countries.
Its worse than that. The Kellogg Company in the US , they make breakfast cereal mostly had a 6 hour work week in the 1930's . The shareholders of the company forced them to a 40 hour work week thinking they could gain productivity . They gained no productivity but the shareholders instead of reversing it kept it. I've seen many Korean youtuber happy that their not living in Korea anymore. Many say it to much pressure living there, and are happy living in another Country.
I am finding your videos very interesting. I recently became addicted to watching the many romantic Kdramas on Netflix which give one a certain impression of Korea. I enjoy them even though I know they are quite different from the reality of real life in Korea. I already was aware of certain social problems in Korea but your videos highlight the many serious (& sad) problems that still exist in Korean society and will probably take generations to change. What I am particularly interested to hear from you is whether or not Koreans who choose to leave Korea & live abroad are happy to have left and consider that they are glad to have left. I notice that you said you have spent time living in Australia - I am an Aussie & have lived my long entire life here, but I live close by a Sydney suburb that has over the last decade become populated by Koreans. I find the many thousands of Koreans living here very positive, happy, friendly and hard working. I love how the suburb has become alive and energised at night with people socialising in restaurants and outdoors right through the night - it has been a wonderful transformation. I think our laws in Australia prevent the corporate bad behaviour that occurs in Korea - our employment laws are very strong and prevent mistreatment of employees on any level. Similarly Korean women working for a Korean employer in Australia are strongly protected by Australia laws and any Korean employer doing the wrong thing would be quickly and harshly dealt with. I think it would be almost impossible for a Korean employer to get away with bad practices or exploitation of their Korean employees in Australia. So I'm assuming that the Koreans that have come to Australia are happy to have escaped the problems back in Korea. The one thing which I do think remains is the unrealistic expectations that Korean parents out here place on their children. As a teacher I see that Korean parents are obsessed with getting their children into expensive private schools and spend huge amounts on private tutoring - they don't seem to realise that the public (free) education system in Australia is perfectly able to teach their children well and providing that their children just study well as well as doing other things like sport and socialising with friends then they will be able to get into any course they want at University - I speak from 35 years of teaching experience and have seen many many children become doctors & lawyers & engineers etc. from public schools who live balanced teenage lives. I am hoping that Korean parents will realise this over time and not be ripped off by expensive private schools and expensive tutoring for no reason and allow their children to go play sport and socialise and go out with friends etc. and not think that they have to force their kids to just study all day & all night & lose their childhoods. So I will be interested to see what you have to say about Koreans living in other places such as Canada & Australia.
I'm surprised no one has replied to your excellent post and answering your questions. I'm living in Republic of Ireland, also a teacher. We currently have some similar issues. We have a housing crisis. Even rent has become unavailable as well as very high. Many in their 20s still living with their parents. Irish also have huge interest in education. However, we are a bit more broad minded. We investigate schools to see what results or how the students succeed. Some go for private school but most go for better public schools. ( Although there's more private in Dublin. ) We also have cram school for final year before the leaving certificate, which is the exam that we all hate. There's a points system. Who ever gets top points, gets first choice of course. Tough on the students who feel sick for exams, there is no option to repeat. This year only, they allowed repeat for people who got covid19. This creates enormous pressure. As parents, we introduced different skills to our children when young. They went to a good school and homework I made sure was well done, with learning happening. Also, we brought them to play sports, making sure they learned swimming, and music, to provide a more balanced life. They all chose Music or Art as part of the final exam. They got high results in these subjects because they were an enjoyable break from the study. They are doing well. Two in engineering, one Maths science. Others still waiting. One having decision making time. Many Irish pay for extra tuition, grinds.. The students who had grinds often end up dropping out of university. We didn't do grinds. Yet they all did very well in this exam. There is an old saying ( English I think. ) All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. This is very wise. Now, too much play and less work is not good either. As you say, it's getting the balance. All parts of the brain need stimulation in order for it to work most effectively. This is why I love music. It has everything. Composition, maths, performance, confidence building and creativity. Listening, relaxing, but also, development of independent thinking. Surely these are the skills for competence in all areas of life? Love your post. Looks like us Irish are going to start emigration again. Foreign investment in property has driven up home prices. I love this country, but we are not being fair to our youth. They are loosing hope of owning a home. This is university graduates with well paid work.
@@materdeimusicd.buckley2974 I really enjoyed reading your reply and enlightening me about the situation in Ireland. You certainly share my views on providing children with a balanced life where they have the opportunity to experience many things and provide varied stimulation and experiences for their personal and mental development. I totally agree with you when it comes to music - it is well known that music (& art) works the creative side of the brain and for the child's developing mind it is critical that both hemispheres of the brain have the opportunity to develop. I am a strong advocate for all children learning music, regardless of them being "good" at it or wanting to pursue it further down the track. There is no doubt that the study of music helps students in their other academic pursuits. But it is also a great lifelong hobby to have. It is sad for teachers to see these days that some students who have worked hard for many years and have graduated from their studies are then able to not get jobs easily. Fortunately in Australia this has never been the case and at the present time with our unemployment rate at historic lows (3%) there is a lack of workers, especially skilled & professionally qualified workers. Moreover, our industrial & employment laws guarantee that our workers are fairly paid, not exploited by multi-nationals and mostly work a 35 hour week. I am simply aghast at the corporate culture that exists in Korea where workers are essentially slaves to the company working ridiculous hours, much of those hours unpaid, and being still being abused for not doing enough. Crazy stuff. Any company or corporate executive trying to get away with that sort of behaviour in Australia would be quickly prosecuted and the executives would face criminal charges and immediately lose their jobs. We have recently had a whole series of high profile investigations into the corporate behaviour of some of the most powerful and biggest companies in Australia which has seen massive fines imposed, numerous resignations of CEOs and their executive Board members, criminal charges laid and new even stricter laws imposed. Also, the Union movement which protects the workers is still reasonably strong in Australia. We have many millions of people who have emigrated to Australia from all over the world and I don't see many who have been disappointed with their choice either for themselves or for their children - certainly the Koreans living in Sydney that I see are happy to have made the move and won't be going back.
@@oldmanbanksia agreed. Interestingly, they have a difficult border. We have a border too. Less difficult, but it could well be a contributing factor to the attitude to education in both countries. People are anxious for their children to have a better future. I'm sure you are well aware of all the Irish emigration to Australia also. Mainly building trades and nurses. Nurses and Midwives here have to work much harder than in Australia. ( 12 hour shifts and unpaid handover which can last an hour.) I heard things are easier in Australia from people who returned to help Ireland during Covid19. They are also assigned less people to care for so care is then better than Ireland. We have a huge inefficient civil service. It's crippling our little country, affecting health, education, and gardai (police), firefighters. There seems to be a much worse problem in Korea. Inefficient service and corruption go hand in hand. Parents in Korea want their children to escape corruption and rise above it. Yesterday, things were really put in perspective in our house. I went with my son to the funeral of an 18 year old boy. Heart attack. This could happen any of our children. His father spoke beautifully of all the joy they experienced together. No one was speaking about the study he did, etc. He was looking forward to going to university. Exam finished, waiting results and course offer. I share this hoping this story will help someone reading it to cherish children. Let them have some fun. Enjoy them. Life is short. Make the most of it. We have only one life. An old Gaelic saying. Mol an óige agus tiocfaidh siad. Praise the youth and they will come ( be fulfilled).

Hey Sienna, very interesting topic and video! I just wanted to say that I lived one year in Seoul before and can just agree with all your points. Korean work-culture makes living the family life really hard for the korean people. Also there is pressure from every side of the society to achieve both a succesful carreer and a family. That said a lot of these problems are problems that are put on the younger generations all over the world. You already mentioned the housing price thing that is really a global issue. I am kinda sad about the reality we live in and your video brought my memories about Korea back into my mind. I remember that I was really sad for my korean friends that they had to go trough so much suffering and impossibilties with no real chance of ever being able to afford a family. I just hope that one day the Korean society has a change of mind in the fields of social law and the "work-hard" culture. Because in my opinion it destroys the mere foundation of a peacful and social life. It almost feels like the SK state wants to create work robots and no humans. You mentioned the high suicide rate before. A lot of people feel terrorized by this society and I can't imagine how it feels like to grow up in this society. Anyways thanks for the video and let's hope things will change one day down the line (I know that in Korea cultural issues take a lot of time to change because of the old people and their thoughts dominating puplic opinion).🥲

As a Westerner living in Korea, Korean working culture is so toxic and not as efficient as people think it is. Go to work early, hardly do work, pretend you're working and go home late. Hence, my girlfriend is now self-independent working for herself. Excellent video which highlights the current predicament for woman and the spillover effects this has on society in general. Sadly, Korea is still decades behind on many social issues. High cost of living, housing issue, inflation, over-competitive society, high cost of education, long working hours, too little well-paid Chaebol jobs, lack of employment, jobless graduate issue, judgemental society, some radical conservatism/feminism creating artificial divides, toxic cultural norms, always RESPECT YOUR ELDERS, etc... However, at the same time, their grandparents lived during the 1960s when North Korea at one point was economically stronger than South Korea and had an average of 5+ children in poverty. People don't want to make the necessary lifestyle changes and they want to live the "good life" that doesn't involve making the sacrifices of having children. I teach in Gangnam and many of my students always talk about how badly their parents want to move to the US, Canada or Australia. Sad reality.
@@klove5974 Good point. A little less materialism and a little more sacrifice is what a lot of societies should strive for these days. But our minds are so warped from marketing and advertising, it's hard to go against the herd mentality and what is shoved into our faces on TV. If a housing market correction occurs, younger people will want to have and raise children instead of moving abroad.
I would assume US would be worse! My American friends only have 10 days holiday and are always working compared to me here in the UK with 30 days holidays and my manager makes me log off at 5pm
You just can't handle the game because you've have been bro in America or whoever you are. You only care about social issues. Just do it! stop complaining or go back to your western world where we care about social issues. Dont criticize other culture. Thats who they are.
The overall stress sounds truly unbearable especially because it damages the soul and psyche... hence, the highest suicide rate. Hoping those 'with power' will recognize the combination of factors causing their citizens such grief & enact needed change.

I live in Russia and people of my age (generation Z) see marriage in another way comparing older generations. We consider it to be not so important. Lots of young people wanna live a free live and are not quick with that. And I think the same. But EACH person of 30 and more age have had such experience in their live and most of them are divorced. So I’m pretty skeptical when it comes to this topic. Society just made us thinking that it’s an important step in romantic relationships, when actually couples where partners are together for a long time and not married - happier.
I'm from Eastern European country and honestly being 32 year old childless millenial woman, the best thing I ever did, was not getting married or having kids. All my peers are divorced and woman are left as single mothers. There is no child support system, so the woman gets screwed. As a kid in the 90s and early 2000s, I remember abserving how little boys and men in general were treated like kings in Eastern Europe. They could do evil things to woman, cheat and no one would call them out. I'm not surprised that Eastern Europeans are going extinct at fast pace. People resent me, because I'm living the life that most people can not dream of in Eastern Europe. I'm financialy very wealthy, childfree and I don't have to do nothing for a men. Our government hates women like me.
@@teoleno4019 my sister and brother are divorced too now. (when i texted this comment they were married btw). now my sister is alone and brings up her kid with our help. i have a lot of bad examples of marriage in my life. i consider marriage to be unreliable. The obvious fact for me is that people get married because they think they must, but not the WANT.
@@teoleno4019 I was on Facebook for a while, was focused on European news and related interests (I'm from the US), and was really shocked at how many young men over there "come out" AFTER they get married and/or babies are born? What's with that? It's like there's an epidemic of men in central and Eastern Europe who magically decide they're ghey or bi AFTER they've already put a wrecking ball (babies) through a young woman's life. These young women will NEVER be able to get their youths back, and likely will NEVER be considered "marriage material" by any other man. It's so cruel and heartless. Then the girls are totally abandoned and humiliated. It's painful to see.

I find it interesting that women are so discriminated at work in general despite the fact, that Korea should encourage having children, root for everyone to work, be productive for country...And yet there is also strong anti-feminism in Korea...
Feminism isn't the solution either, as europe and the US are showing right now, as once they get into power they discriminate just as badly as the men they claim to fight against. What we need is egalitarianism, in which we can treat men and women broadly equal. Not 100% equal as men and women are different and have different needs, like a woman physically needing some time off work before and after labour. It is a necessity for healtyh children, and a society needs healthy children to survive, any society that self-selects against procreation is self-selecting it's own extinction. Men needing an outlet for their competive energy, you need to let them be men. At the same time, work is not making anyone happy, neither men nor women, especially not women if the reports in the us and other countries are to be believed. What is making us happy are what we do with the money we worked for, we work to live and for our families. The problem afaik is that obssession with the aesthetics of a hard working life in Korea, namely the insanely high hours they work. The work culture should focus more on efficiency and using the work time efficiently, without overworking the workers at the same time. Korea is just an accelerated pressure cooker variant of what's happening in the US and Europe, when higher education is overvalued and you have tons and tons of people with a diploma but at the same time you are dissing the people in the crafts jobs and those that keep a country running like plumbers, electricians, train drivers, postal workers, etc.
@@LupusAries wtf how can you say 1) women are less happy in jobs than men. What is your point??? 2) Comparison between the PREGNANT woman taking time off versus the men being a men...wtf is that supposed to mean? So men need to let of pressure through what? So they need the wife home.for the beating??? 3) And what is Europe and Co showing?
Sad, but unfortunately true video. Several of my female Korean friends tell me that they terrified of giving any indication to their companies that they might get pregnant. Feel as if they are being watched when they are of a certain age. So sad. HR departments often sweep things under the rug as opposed to penalizing bosses who pressure their female employees.

The cost of living vs the cost of housing has been becoming more and more unattainable for everyone in every major city in the world. Unfortunately Canada isn’t unaffected by these problems despite them not being as severe as Korea. It also may be true that laws are set up and there are “rules” to what you can or can’t be asked, however employers will simply not hire you for whatever personal reasons they have regardless.

I looked into this issue carefully. It seems a very blurred topic which their is no direct answers. People are always blame external factors. However South Korean people and some asian cultures need to look at themselves. South Korea people are actually quite shy this makes it hard for them to meet eachother. Also since they study so hard their minds are quite developed. So that more likely take to finding a partner through an analytical method of having a list to tick boxes then following their heart or emotions. There was a study that showed that the low birth rate is "Not" parents not having children but actually people not getting married in the first place. Because the study found married people actually have on average slightly above 2 children on average. So the bigger question is what has happen to South Korea dating culture? You never going to get a good answer asking single people this question, because they are always going to save face, people like to pretend they have a good game. Men and women need to come to an understanding how to meet eachother. I think the fear of being judged is strong in asian cultures, the fear of shame. It makes it harder for people to open up to eachother and date. No one is perfect, maybe they feel since they didn't get into a good university or have a top job they aren't good enough.

I agree with the video and the comments about cultural and economic issues. I would also add here demand and supply mismatch. Everybody wants comfortable employment in an office, but there are not enough office jobs available. Also, education has diminishing returns after a certain point.

This ties in with a greater global trend, as countries urbanize and industrialize they have fewer and fewer kids. There's mulitple reason, like cost of living, cost of raising a kid, the education of women, lower infant mortality, etc etc all have correlation with dropping fertility. But a big thing is kids go from being free labour on the farm, to kids taking of 100's of thousands of dollars+ to raise. Adults aren't stupid, when kids go from free labour to expensive pieces of furnature that are pretty much resource sinks, people are just gonna have less kids, it's simple cost-benefit. Yea society and social structures play a big role, but all countries that industrialize even the most progressive like Sweden and Denmark have had their birthrates plummet to below 2.1 (replacement level). No country has a higher birthrate compared to in 1960's in the future we are gonna see a massive demograpic and population collapse and unless we are brutally honest about the subject, no amount of social or policy gerrymandering will fix this, Europe has proven this. It's likely gonna have to take a large systematic change in how our societies function, and no one really has an answer.

As someone who understands the issue and the almost imposible solution to it i have only one solution to the problem and that is ARTIFICIAL WOMBS rellying on people and spending so much money on incentives that do not work is just foolish the governaments should just make kids through artificial wombs, school them and let them find a job and care for themselves. The state of the world is pretty sad I agree, but I just wanna mention that not having kids doesn't necessarily mean you're going to end up lonely and sad. This stigma pushes people to end up having kids anyways, even if the society they live in or their circumstances ends up making that choice regrettable. In turn, you can also end up sad and lonely even if you have kids.
i respect it, i always tell the younger generation and even my own kids, they shouldn't have kids just to have kids and or get married They should focus on building themselves and their lives and becoming stable financially and with themselves. Then once they are ready they can focus on having kids, or marriage or whatever their next step would be in life. Why struggle with something when you could build a foundation for it first.

I appreciate this content you share. I wonder about bosses pressuring employees to go out after work to drink. I find it counter productive. If I wanted my company to prosper, I would prefer my employees be healthier. To rest, to drink less, to be stronger in mind body and spirit. An employee with a drinking problem, unrested, stressed and hung over is not the type of employee I would want at work. They are working on an empty tank. How much more prosperous and productive the company would be without alcoholic employees, with rested employees, with responsible employers. Imagine if google and apple pushed soju on their workers instead of smoothies and meditation. Imagine where Samsung could be on smoothies and meditation instead of soju.

And don't forget retirement. Women retire with less money than men because we keep taking these long pauses to raise kids. Women are starting to see the trade off doesn't pay off.
Corea is so expensive. I pay 20 cents for a coffee but I make it at home or 1 dollar at most when going out. People get excessively pressured to get married and have kids, the housing crisis and the cost of education is making them unable to start a family. The Government should definitely do something about this, otherwise there will be an economic collapse and no money to pay the pensions for the elderly and who is going to look after the current generation when people get older?
Agree, the government decided long ago to prioritize minimum wage increases, small mom/pop retailers, and the interests of labor unions and similar guilds (rather than cost of living). The cost pressure has built up over time and is now a real problem.

There's so much catch 22, double edge swords, stigmas and contradictory thought processes behind making life sustainable. I personally believe there's no way to make a life for yourself without having the bigger man (or women) looking down on you whether it's during the interview or during your career. On top of that you're trying to find your niche, how you're going to fit in with society, how you're going to balance family life most importantly how your finances are going to support you into retirement. It's too much and gives hopelessness to wanting to birth a child in this world.

Thank you for explaining this. Most of the sources out there make it seem like Korean women are married to their jobs, as if that is a selfish personal choice. The discrimination aimed at women at mid-20s/30s, the intrusive questions from bosses about marriage and family, the work hours that add up to an extra 2 months of work per year, high inflation…sounds like the perfect recipe for burnout and believing there simply is not enough time for a husband and children. I’m curious if outsourcing child and house care is considered an option, or simply unaffordable. Either way, that’s how many middle and upper class Americans make it work with demanding jobs. That costs a lot though, definitely not an option for all.
Great presentation by beautiful Sienna! Very thorough, Sienna shows a complete understanding of all the reasons behind Korea's low fertility. And this problem is going on all over the world in developed countries. You need to pair-off to procreate.

This makes me appreciate the work environment I enjoyed in the USA. My daughters own their own company and all the full time employees are women (although they do contract with male photographers and other talent). They have the happiest employees because they are very lenient if a mom has to leave work early or take a day off for child reasons. Their bottom line is if the employee is efficient and gets the work done, not the number of hours they are in the office. This attitude makes top notch people want to work at their company and no one ever quits - they even have several employees working remotely from other states (when they had to follow their husband’s jobs). SK needs more women bosses.

You'd think as population declines it would reach a point than stabilize but all the work is still in the cities so until the small towns and rural areas are actually abandoned, people will flow to where jobs are and than not have babies. all over the world, this has become an issue especially in major coastal cities.
It's hard at the moment :(
Dude - people live with their parents until they get married in Korea (unless they move to a different area for a job).
Can’t be worse than the 40s
That makes logical sense but when South Korea had over population, it was a much poorer country. I think like Europe or Japan, throwing money at low birth rate will have opposite than intended results.
This may be uncomfortable but it’s female empowerment that is the main cause. Low birth rate or shrinking population can be a worth while price to pay for gender equality but let’s not ignore facts. Old generation Korean women had no rights to work (with few exceptions) so their best prospects were to find a quality husband or even any husband that can provide and become mothers. Marriage was more about survival and livelihood than emotions or looks or romance.

As someone who’s absolutely not interested in having kids it’s interesting to hear why people around the world don’t want them.

That is a cultural issue, because parents don't want to live in more affordable housing (which does exist: although still expensive.) because they're afraid they'll be "judged."
Second, as mentioned before - 90% of the issues stemming from low birth rates are due to cultural factors, not that it's impossible.
It's always better to look for alternative routes, and let them have their childhood.
your quote on point on that imo
And for China it‘s the exact same problems
@@anthonyju6392 Very true. As an employer I would rather hire someone with experience than a degree of the same subject.

Why? Well some "Journalists" in various media sources, including mainstream, used clips from those games/Simulations and claimed they were real war footage. And because those "Journos" were too stupid to tell a game apart from reality, all the independent content creators were punished.

I lived in Korea for 5 years, 2015-2020, and many times I would hear about couples having a wedding to appease the families but never register the marriage, as a way to live together without actually being married, and then in 2 years after getting "married" they would decide whether to register or not. I really found this odd, but I guess it was common enough because I had a few colleagues that when I would say "my husband" about my husband, that I actually married and registered with the Korean government (neither of us are Korean, we met and got married there though), some of my colleagues didn't believe me that he was legally my husband and thought we were just living together, lol. But I mean we were foreigners there that eventually wanted to live in other countries so no, lol, we weren't just calling ourselves married so that the Korean culture and society would get off our backs, lol

Most women I know consider themselves "career women" say having kids is just a burden and not worth wasting the time.

The state of the world is pretty sad I agree, but I just wanna mention that not having kids doesn't necessarily mean you're going to end up lonely and sad. If I wanted my company to prosper, I would prefer my employees be healthier. To rest, to drink less, to be stronger in mind body and spirit. An employee with a drinking problem, unrested, stressed and hung over is not the type of employee I would want at work. They are working on an empty tank. Corea is so expensive. I pay 20 cents for a coffee but I make it at home or 1 dollar at most when going out.

Just tell them what they want to hear so a few months down the road you could say you’ve changed your mind, want to settle down and have kid(s).
It would be legal; just playing by their own tricky rules.

Given what I've seen of the school and work culture there...I'm surprised people even have the time to look at each other much less date and get married.
Good to see an honest, down to earth reflection on what IS, a growing problem re marriage, amongst the new 20 - 40 year olds; S Korea not being an exception to these problems. Totally understandable as to why. Those who have got richer whilst the poor have gotten poorer is NO understatement re the truth. Corruption in S Korea is a serious problem. 😗The Sewol ferry disaster, still enrages me when you see the uncovered truth re that and I weep for the parents, for the FAMILIES, who lost loved ones thanks to so much corruption, so many failures AND denials re the truth for years after. 😗NO wonder why the 20 - 40s generation have little or no respect anymore for those who claim to ne self righteous, all knowing and caring yet often are exposed to be anything but self righteous corrupt bigots.😗

Ah India, the former back water cess pit of the British Empire. The place where they dragged out the next lot of emaciated kids to parade on western television whilst pleading poverty. .. Or where their so called sacred river the Ganges is chemically polluted, where cows poo in it, where garbage and rubbish floats amongst those bathing in it.. AH yes indeed the 'famous South Asian country'.@@basugunja

Excellent video! A lot of parallels to my own country the US
The irony is that the refusal to create humane and good work culture in societies Korea, USA everywhere in the developed world will almost guarantee a collapse . You'd think as population declines it would reach a point than stabilize but all the work is still in the cities so until the small towns and rural areas are actually abandoned, people will flow to where jobs are and than not have babies.
In a shockingly short time there will be too few people to maintain the cities as well . This happened in ancient Rome where during its peak the city had a population around that of say modern Changwan and lost 99% of its people taking centuries to recover and eliminating the western Roman culture

18:44 “My pain ends here” … yikes, that is bleak. But I wouldn’t want to pass that on to my child, either.
I think one big factor of people all around not wanting kids is that your actions are more limited as a parent and you have less free time, with this being such a hectic stressful situation you get barely any reward raising them and don’t have any money to fulfill your wish.

A lot of Korean women are forced to quit their jobs for child birth or child rearing.
After witnessing all these, young women who studied so hard all their lives don't want to sacrifce everything they have.
No one is asking them to, but many men and women want children but can't because they simply can't afford it.
Being fully committed to a company is bull Squeeze. When is a company EVER fully committed to you? Never. It's like when a company tells you it's like a family, Yeah, right. it only means you are expected to go above and beyond for the company but should you ever need the company to cover for you, you become a ghost. You need to work to live, NOT live to work.
I'm sorry to say this....but HR should actually sort out this issue where these companies are asking personal questions that most interviewees feel uncomfortable with. There is a reason for HR in this kind of situation💀😭

Whether in Korea or any other country. You need money….money doesn’t solve all world problems but it solves about 98% of them. 🤷🏻♀️
