I just tested it yesterday in a highly risky and extremely dangerous situation where the Disco was sliding sideways as soon as I wanted to progress just as lightly as possible. Leaving the gearbox in 1st gear with LOW RANGE of course with the engine stopped. I was even able to get out of the Disco to reshape the terrain with a pickaxe and pile up stones to balance the vehicle, and all that for more than two hours! On the X5 you have to activate the HOLD mode by letting the engine run as you can see on the video (When tires are not matching the terrain)
However, this is not specific to BMW. It's pretty common to all car manufacturers. You can try the same approach on your own car. The purpose of the video is to make people more aware in case they will be faced with such scenarios and more particularly in off-road. The next videos will be the subject of this problem in great detail via a lived and real situation 😉
When you park a BMW and switch off the engine, the parking mode is automatically entered and the gearbox is locked. This should not be possible on a four-wheel drive car. But a rear-wheel drive car…
Park mode (gearbox) only affects the rear wheels. I tested it simultaneously with the handbrake and it gives the same behavior. I did the same test for Jeep_Rubicon, BMW X3/X4/X6 with similar results.
Have you tested transmission parking brake on Discovery 2 on the same slope

You must send this to BMW immediately and ask for 3 million dollars.

This is unfortunately comon to all bmw xdrive vehicles.
Other 4x4 brands are also concerned too.
