Some good points here aimed at players in the real world. You need a lightweight portable board if playing out these days. Many gigs we do are smash and grab slots where multiple bands are on the bill. All gear needs to be portable and quick to set up. For drives I use the Thorpy Dane drive and boost. Wampler tumnus mini. Fuzz is the underrated JHS mini fuzz V2. Lots of scope there.
Thanks Bryan, I try to target most of my videos that way because that's my background as well. Agree on all points - multi-stage pedals that clean up w/ guitar volume and work well with other pedals seem to be the ones that stay on boards these days. Sounds like you've got a great set of gain stages!
Bro, love this video. You always have a simple, yet practical approach to playing and tone building. I lowkey wanna make your pedalboard for myself hehehe
This is actually almost exactly what I do. I am a working guitar player. I actually rock a Light Speed, Winford, And a RC booster. Sometimes a Keeley SD1. It’s perfect for home gigs when I can play into my edge of breakup Plexi. Or when I have to use a Deluxe Reverb or something. Something about less is more. Fantastic video.
Thanks for checking it out! I’ve been meaning to try the Lightspeed. Also, agreed…it’s crazy how once you start working, the pedalboard becomes a mix of tools to maintain control over your tone and then stuff to add extra flair. You never know what the backline situation could be
First, I’m enjoying your videos. Second, that Moniker is sweet. Third, I have many different OD/Dist pedals on the ready, but never more than 2 or 3 on my board. I typically run into a clean amp because volume is an issue. I prefer to keep things small on my board. What goes on my board depends on the gig. I currently have a total of 5 pedals on my board including my tuner. My chain is as follows: TC polytune mini, Lovepedal Super Six (for light gain), Nobels ODR-1 (to add another gain stage), BOSS BD-2 with a Monte Allums mod (for solo boost. I can make it clean or dirty.), and an Earthquaker Devices Dispatch Master reverb/delay. Considering swapping the Nobels with my old OCD. Haven’t decided yet.
Thank you so much, glad you are enjoying them. And thanks, love this guitar and particularly the pickups (Bareknuckle Mule neck and Peter Florance Voodoo '59 bridge). Sounds like we have a similar take on gain pedals, I'm the same way, my board is sort of "tailor-made" depending on the gig or my mood just to keep my travel light and not load my signal chain down with anything that isn't necessary. Those modded Blues Drivers are sweet, and the EQD Dispatch Master is such a space saver, I wonder if they can be modded to get the rev/delay on separate footswitches? Sounds like an awesome rig man!
Great video, Andrew! I really liked the second method you described. That's what I gravitated toward. Since a lot of the shows I was playing a few years ago didn't even have a PA, I would push the clean amp but roll off any natural distortion with the guitar volume knob and bring it up as needed. Then I had an Ibanez TS for solos and an extra distortion pedal basically just for more sustain. I really found myself loving the volume knob and having that dynamic approach (at least it felt that way to me).
Thanks Brian! Yea I love using the volume knob too. I find myself using a deluxe reverb a lot and those just don’t wanna breakup, luckily there are a bunch of pedals that imitate that “slightly pushed” dynamic thing and I end up leaving it on for 90% of the set. I actually like the “clean” with the guitar volume rolled back to around 3 better than the straight deluxe, it tends to be a little compressed and less transient to my ear
@@eyoungil nice! I used the HX Stomp for a really long time, great device. Just checked out the Protein pedal, I've never heard of that and it looks really awesome, thank you for sharing!
Great video! I use Setup#2. TCE Dark Matter with gain at 10 o’clock. I put a Tech 21 Boost Fuzz in front of it. The boost channel on the Boost Fuzz gives the Dark Matter more punch when i need it, and i also always leave the drive on when i engage the Fuzz. I also have another boost after the Dark Matter for when it’s time for a solo, no matter what gain pedal/s are on.
Thanks for checking out the video, glad you enjoyed it! I didn’t think the Dark Matter took pedals well, that’s great to know. Are you boosting for solos before your gain pedals or after with a clean boost?
@@AndrewLynchMusic i run 2 boosts. A clean boost before the Dark Matter to “goose” the gain, and one after to boost the level for solos. The TCE Dark Matter also stacks well with TS type pedals. If i need something with a little more bite for a gig, i just replace the Dark Matter with a Boss SD-1. I can relate to this vid a lot. I rely on a venue’s backline amps, and i also don’t wanna lug around a large board. Keep the videos coming. Cheers! 😊
@@alsuazo4824 nice options. Feels great to find some gain pedals that work well together and then we can just focus on the playing! Appreciate the support, thanks again for watching ✌️
Andrew Sir... I have the Earth Quaker Palisades into a Jhs Charlie Brown V4 that gives me 3 stages of gain plus a boost. The tones are versatile and dynamic..! Subscribed.
Great video! Personally I like to do what you described, having a core sound and boosting it. Right now I’m using the Wampler Plexi Drive Deluxe for my core overdriven sound. The nice thing about that is that it had a built in tube screamer. I also like to use a RYRA Klone to boost into the front end as well. Works great into my 65 DRRI.
thanks Chris, really appreciate that. Love the Plexi Drive, great MIAB that also cleans up great with the guitar volume. Great compliment to the mid-scooped Deluxe clean sound, it's the closest thing to AB-ing between two amps! DRRI is such a great pedal platform. Check out the Winford Drive if you ever get a chance, it's one of my favorites and I've tried an embarrassing amount of overdrive pedals...ha
Awesome video! I really like the setup of your pedalboard :D I don't have a Winford (awesome pedal!) so I stack different low gain od to have different nuances, first is the fuzz (the great jhs mini fuzz v2), then ehx hot wax, dual od, the right side is set to medium gain and the left as a boost, then I have a vs audio straight flush (bluesbraker) set to low gain followed by nux morning star (another bluesbraker) and finally a clean boost. I usually stack two or three pedals to get different gain stages, using the straight flush as my foundational od. I tried to downsize to 2 drives, following the concept you explained, but I don't have a medium to high gain pedal so I cannot get all the sound I need without all 4 od. However the pedalboard is 12 x 23 inches, so still relatively small. Your video really helped me to better understand my pedalboard, so thank you! I would love to watch a rig rundown of your pedalboard! Do you use other modulation pedals other than the chorus, from time to time?
Hey thanks so much for checking it out! Sounds like you’ve got a lot of gain options when you combine those pedals. And true, the only way you could use less drives is if you have one that does medium/high but also backs down to get those middle shades, also assuming that you are comfortable using your volume knob all night (not everyone is and that’s okay!) I’ve actually changed a bunch around since I made this video so I need to do a pedalboard rundown for sure, hope you can check it out once it goes live. In terms of modulation, I would add a quality univibe if I had space for one more pedal. I use a wah pedal frequently (that sits off-board) and find that it’s frequency manipulation kinda gets in the ballpark of phaser/univibe. Flanger I wouldn’t have much use for (although thru-zero flanging is awesome). More the kinda thing I would mess around with just jamming at home than actually use at a gig and I tend to put much of my focus (and money) toward those things.
@@AndrewLynchMusic The univibe is a great choice, I also use a mooer phaser (tiny and awesome) as a substitute for a wah-effect :D (Almost half of my pedalboard is composed of tiny pedals, tuner included, so I can save a bit more space for another pedal/sound). I'll watch the rundown for sure! I switched the notifications on
Awesome vid bro! I'm a Breaker > TS everyday of the week.. but yea I agree sometimes that "amp in a box" is the only thing that will do if the track needs it..
Thanks Joey! Yea man, a combo of lighter drives can get pretty close to a MIAB pedal, there are so many ways to get there. I can admit, I'm still changing my gain pedals often (and have been for many years!) hah...the quest never ends!

I've been interested in the Winford for years, with the main draw being it has a reputation for working with almost all amps, but I'm leaning toward getting a vox copperhead drive that has the additional bonus of going direct if need be! I have a bogner blue that I like but it's a bit limited in its possible applications (I like it best at low gain settings)...
Hey thanks for checking out the vid. I highly recommend the Winford Drive, but that is awesome that the copperhead has built-in cab sim, that is a huge plus! Bogner Blue I've heard is cool too, but there's something about the Winford that they just nailed with the amount of compression in the gain, it's really open but still has a lot of guts, it's really a great pedal
Nice video!! I use OCD with a touch of gain as "second channel" of my clean amp, and klon clone for boosting the ocd and ehx double muff for boosting ocd in the fuzzy way lol 😂

Good video :) I tend to take my amp around for gigs (runt 20 head), and texture it's gain with an OD in front. It's a bit heavy to carry around but I can't afford any "amp in a box" pedal yet
