Thank you!
I have played The Last Of Us Part 1 at least a dozen times, & I can say that this show is the best videogame adaptation ever! It does what any good adaptation should do; be mostly loyal to the original source material, but change just enough so there's something new yet still enjoyable to watch. For example, about 80% of what we see in the 1st 3 episodes is from the 1st few levels of the game, but the remaining 20% is things like expanded backstory & more development for certain characters we didn't originally get. Here's hoping Season 2 is as good & faithful when they adapt Part 2.
YMS just telling homophobes they need to work on themselves 😂 Thank you for this!
Hey Adam, to help you a little with the pronunciation (dunno if you are gonna read this message), it's Gustavo "Santaolaja" (think of the "j" as in "jaws" or "jealous"); he is Argentinian, we tend to pronounce the "ll" or double l's as "j" (different pronuciation than "standard" Spanish)
@YourMovieSucksDOTorg please review season 3 of the walking dead now. I want to see you put yourself through it again
Why did you like your own comment?
It’s good whenever adam is being super positive in a review and you can hear the joy in his voice talking about his favorite bits from the show
It's so relieving to hear honestly. Rather than his usual tone
It is good I wanna hug him :)
yeah his old smartass reviews are worthless
It's why I go back to his Synechdoche New York videos so much; he's all shaped up to be this dude who trashes movies relentlessly, and sometimes it's nice to remember he does that because movies are usually such incredible pieces of shit. Whenever someone gets their act together and actually produces something with some talent, effort and art to it, he loves it and it's great to see.
If there wasn't episode 3, this would be an 6/10 for him, easy.
Love that the main characters from the game got to play a role in the show. Joel played James, Ellie played Ellie’s mom, Marlene played Marlene, Abby played no-name nurse, and this one took me a while to find out but Tommy played the man with the beautiful beard who got domed by the big zomboy. Loved it
I didn't know that! so cool that they all got some places in the show
And they managed to do it without any of them feeling forced or like shoe horned in cameos
@@rubbish_katAshley Johnson took me out a little bit (Anna) just because I'm so familiar with her voicing Ellie, at the start of the episode especially though I didn't really mind after that. I was like holy shit when did Bella Ramsey get so good at imitating Ashley lol
Speaking of brokeback mountain, Gustavo Santaolalla (composer for tlou) won an Oscar for his score on that movie.
Oh my fucking god in a way EP3 really was like Brokeback Mountain. 😭😭😭😆😆😆
@@oldflowers1342No it wasn't

@@oldflowers1342 What narrative similarities are there between this episode and Brokeback Mountain?

Is it me or yms is awfully nice in this video? like even when he critisize he sounds like a happy person lol. I like this energy more though
I think him recording videos during a livestream changes his tone
His best tone change I’ve seen was in his hellraiser review, showing really great appreciation for some of the writing they done for the main character.
The Last of Us is just THAT good
When you like something, critcising it is way less stressful and more low-stakes. You don't feel this blanket of negativity where you don't feel like your criticisms have to come together to make a cogent thesis of "this thing sucks because of all these problems".
Well because normally he doesn't really like what he's criticising. But he actually likes The Last of Us so the tone is different.
I can’t wait for Adum to give Fast X an X/10
XTREAMLY HORRIBLE/10
I hope he gives Fast X part 3 a: X pt.3 /10
Something I felt was rushed in the final episode more than Joel's killing spree was when they get knocked out and taken by the fireflies. I remember when you come upon that subway tunnel that's rushing with water in the game, I got a big sense of dread knowing that Ellie was gonna fall in. I was just waiting for it to happen with every jump. Then the whole set-piece with the subway car and she jumps down to rescue you and the huge sense of panic when you both get submerged and you see her body motionless in the water and you need to swim to her. Joel dragging her out of the water and pleading and ignoring the fireflies that come up to him because Ellie isn't breathing. All of that was skipped in the show for a super unclimactic scene of the fireflies throwing a flashbang at them. I liked the addition of them opening up to each other and us learning about Joel's attempted suicide, but holly hell I think them skipping the whole water set piece was such a disappointment.
Feels like they ran out of budget by the time they got to this episode.
I personally didn't mind the exclusion of that scene (at the very least the Fireflies knocking out Joel when he's trying to do CPR on Ellie). Just because I think that the game portrays the Fireflies as way too incompetent for a cure to be viable and thus reducing the impact of Joel's decision to save Ellie
Lmao it's so funny when you're looking up directors of episodes and shit but you just keep calling Frank's actor the skinny guy
Adum moment
@@YMS a long time ago
a long time ago
My biggest complaint about the show is that I think it should have been longer, 12 episodes would have fit the story better in my opinion, with the 9 we got it feels like the story gets too compact at the end and the show never really show the moment when Joel really starts to care for Ellie, it just happens out of the blue.
Agree 100%
Also iirc it was one of the thing that people criticized about episode 3 : the show is already kinda short and you're waisting time with side characters.
I disagree as I loved the episode but I get it. Although the homophobia of some was blatant, let's not kid ourselves.
And btw, I ended up disliking the show overall, mostly because of the lack of chemistry between Joel and Ellie (I never bought Ramsey as Ellie), so I guess this little side step with Nick Offerman, whom I adore, was perfect for me.
Stop using homophobia as a crutch for criticism. It really just wasn't an interesting episode.
@@samuelgeaney7556
1. That's only your opinion.
2. I said "the homophobia OF SOME", acknowledging the fact that others had, indeed, legitimate issues with the episode. That is precisely what I started my comment with.
3. Go back and read some comments when the episode first aired maybe? When the main issue of some people is that they saw two men in bed together, yes, we can talk about homophobia.
@@Unherist
It was a pointless episode that did nothing to merit its inclusion in the series and only bogged down the pacing
Fans of the game could also point to how it was a slap in the face to how the same content was treated vs its adaptation
It was a bad episode
@@TOAOM123 writers, directors, actors, showrunners, setpiece designers, FX artists and an army of HBO number crunchers all came to the correct conclusion that the kind of person whose media literacy is weaker than their weird hangups about certain types of person is not worth catering to. They ignored you, and the show benefitted from it.
I found that Tess and Joel arriving to find that Robert was already dead - in the first episode kinda robbed Tess of a bit of ruthlessness - how she shot Robert in the face with no hesitation or emotion in the game...But in the Movie she just tells Ellie "we're bad people" kinda didn't feel like it hit in the same way - I didn't buy it as much. I dunno if you felt the same way?
Ditto, I wish they had retained more of Tess’ hardhearted violent side. It really made her and Joel feel like two of a kind. And seeing her go from no bullshit ruthlessness to desperately seeking a little redemption was a really tragic and compelling way to set Joel and Ellie on their journey. I still liked the show’s version but it didn’t carry the same weight regarding Tess’ guilt and regret about who she was in life.
100% agree. She didn’t seem as tough and it felt like she had to make up for it by swearing twice as much 😕
(Spoiler) It felt so out of character when Tess stood still and got ‘infected’ by that super slow moving infected. I imagined her to have screamed on the top of her lungs, and that she’d stayed screaming to help Joel and Ellie as long as possible to make sure they were safe. Or at least to struggle when one infected came up to her.
It made the infected seem less scary.
This might be an unpopular opinion, but Tess in the show was kinda awful for me. The way she was written to be way, way, way more vulnerable than her video game self who was already vulnerable in ways but still such a badass and capable character. The actress with her fake raspy voice who would deliver some of her lines while slipping back to her Australian accent which was comical. Whatever the hell they decided to do with her in those last moments with the infected which was just odd as all hell.
The show kinda just butchered Tess for me, who was one of my favorite characters from the game despite her relatively short screentime. Hell, she's one of my all time favorite female characters in any game ever.
The problem with the show and the second game is that the two writers who used to contribute the most to ND's narrative driven games, weren't with ND anymore. Neil Cuckman took over and got rid of them. If you read into what his ideas for the first game were, and how the other two writers had to keep the idiot on a leash you quickly realise, Neil Drukman didn't actually make TLOU.
“It’s fine” -Rich Evans-
I had never considered Nick Offerman as a good actor before this show. I've always seen him in sitcoms where he is just himself but in this show my mind was blown by the vulnerability he showed. Would love to see him get more roles where he can actually shine like this
I thought he was good in Devs
He was very good in Devs.
I liked that episode but it felt pretty rushed to me
@@silentninjat I'll check it out!
Then you consume media like an idiot. Offerman is a great actor.
You can tell Adam is into movies more than videogames because he thinks videogames that are more like movies are better than videogames that are more like videogames.
Had the same thought.
I disagree, I don't think he implied that he thought movie-like games are better than game-like games, I think he meant that he just very rarely sees move-like games done well that he really appreciated it. I think it would be more accurate to say he views them as apples and oranges, rather than apples and better apples.
@@bbabamzel8238 from what he was saying in Episode 2, it sounded to me more like he doesn’t like the contrivances common to video games-like rubble conveniently falling in a doorway to block the player from backtracking. He considers them somewhat lazy ways of guiding the story, and appreciated that the Last of Us videogame avoids using them.
You can tell you’re insecure about your own taste
This is the stupidest comment I've ever read. WTF are you talking about?!?
One _tiny_ nitpick, Adam. Dogs can growl without "looking like" they're growling. Otherwise, FANTASTIC review. Love 'em.
I came here to say this as well. My dog does that closed mouth growling thing all the time
ironic since he mentioned media warping one’s perception of reality with the fire scene
I was looking for your comment. Adam maybe never had a dog. lol
It makes me wonder how many nitpicks people have of media are based on their assumptions and not even true lol
@@GuiiBrazil probably for the best, lol
I love how at the end of the first episode Joel picks up the soldier's weapon. Just because in the videogame you wouldn't expect to obtain such strong gun right at the beginning, but it's a TV show, so it's more realistic this way
I like how Joel in the show aquires a different gun every episode.
That's an easter egg references how Naughty Dog views its' animators.
@@Blerwerler Has anyone actually said that or is that just a very generous interpretation?
@@Blerwerler is it not just an allusion to players switching their gun out in a video game ? 😂
it's just a nice touch, shows that the people who made the show get the game
@@Blerwerler Sounds like a copout lol
I think that show had a strong start, but as it went, I would catch myself often comparing it to the game (which simply did most of the things better). It also took me some time to get used to this version of Ellie. All in all, I feel I would have enjoyed the show better if I didn't play the game, because I was really having trouble disconnecting one from another.
Same, even Henry and Sam were so OOC I couldn’t handle it. It’s such a beloved game and it seemed to me they were lazy with the writing, not even much action. Killing frank off just to fit the LGBT agenda (what purpose does that serve killing him off, I don’t care about the sexuality, some people think it was implied in the game so I don’t care) and deciding to do a biiiiig explosion with millions of zombies and one bloater like wtf lol. Shows often do this with adaptation; strong start and then they deviate a way. They show full naked bodies in many HBO shows but showing Joel killing people is too much? Ugh, I can’t 🙈🙈🙈🙈 maybe it’s because I’ve played the game six times before the show even got announced 😂😂
I love hearing how much you loved episode 3 bc I remember feeling floored by it when I first saw it. I watched it twice in a row it was so good. The performances were just so moving
Nah, it was shite
Left Behind in the game had context behind it, at least. You were playing Ellie's flashbacks of her initial infection, but also her in the between of Joel falling off the horse and suddenly being in the suburb. There was a duality to her trying to save Joel, a person she loved, and her thinking back to the last person she loved, although a bit differently, and the fact that she failed to protect them. In the show, we didn't really get that dynamic.
i interpreted the flashback happening in episode 7 as being done to show ellie being triggered by potentially losing another person that she loves. but i also understand your critique of it!
I saw this in the same way. In the game during this time Ellie was on her own searching for supplies to help Joel and having to face some men. I think this episode would have benefited from some version of that being in it, going back and forth between the flashback and the present.
To me the Left Behind episode (Ep.7) feels pretty out of place and people kinda felt the same way, like Adum said it happened immediatly after Joel got stabbed and fainted so people were extremely invested in him we tuned in the next week only to get slapped with a DLC story out of nowhere I think thats why no one really cared for it
Also, I think the chemistry between Bella and Storm was kind of terrible. Bella's performance was really fucking compelling and Storm just felt really awkward on camera. If that was better I might've enjoyed the episode at least a bit more.
I'm sorry but Bella was an awful Ellie.
Honestly, my biggest criticism of episode 3 has more to do with the fact that it ultimately didn't add much to the overall plot except *some* characterization. I think that was the issue with some later episodes, where some of the stuff we had earlier didn't amount to much of anything. Like, thematically, Bill's guardedness and his opening up to live was something that could be mirrored to Joel's character arc, but the series goes in a different direction to explore the "dark side" of love.
I think the issue I had is that there are some great scenes that are well shot and acted, but the show seems to have a balancing issue with its plot and its characterization. Ellie's flashback episode gave us a fair bit of context as to who she is, but I feel it could have been shortened and allowed for either development of other aspects of the world or story. Same for this episode.
Though to be fair, I'm not sure how I would do it differently as I also tend to struggle with characterization and plot progression at times.
THIS! I've been saying this for a while. I LOVED episode 3 and cried like a baby, but it was just too long compared to the rushed feeling of the rest of the show.
it plays into the theme of “it’s always worth it to keep goin” and the importance of human connections and relations, also inspire and show the younger joe a new way to be born again and live etc
the series doesn’t only explore dark sides of love, a great story is multifaceted and nuanced.
the point of last of us even as a game isn’t to get through the plot as quickly as possible.
ellie’s flashback cleared the behaviours from before and it didn’t seem long at all, i do not see any scenes which could be cut to shorten it but perhaps that’s on me. i am actually curious as to which “other aspects of the story” would you have favoured
you can look up on youtube as to why episode 3 progresses the last of us very much so, i remember watching them back when i wasn’t sure if i should watch the show in general (huge and old fan of the game) and those analyses swayed me.
@@theaizere Again, it's not that these episodes aren't well shot or acted, just... they kinda add very little or nothing at all to the main plot. Maybe thematically they do to an extent, but the overall picture is lessened when you sit down to discuss the actual story.
For example, I think a very interesting bit can be seen in Ellie's interactions with Riley. Riley sees the remnant of the US government as "fascists" that starve the people and Ellie points out that the Fireflies aren't really helping anyone because they blow food supplies up.
Riley kinda stops the conversation right there by expressing annoyance with Ellie, and instead, they go on into the mall to goof around. Good for characterization, sure, but... instead of adding to the grayness of things, most of the Left Behind episode is about Riley and Ellie goofing around. It's not *bad* but what does it add to the plot?
At first I thought this was set up to show how gray things are in the world so when Joel kills the Fireflies later on there's a heavier weight to it, but... no.
As you said, it shows us Ellie's behavior and attitude and how she discovered she was immune, but very little else comes from it. Did we need the entirety of the episode dedicated to that while we could've set up the cannibals a bit better? Did we need the chat about how Riley sees FEDRA as fascists when that never comes up again since neither FEDRA nor the motivations of the fireflies are brought up after this?
A lot of this kind of applies to episode 3, though at least that one works more for theme, but it adds very little. Same for some of the flashbacks.
Basically, it's story details that go nowhere.
Did we need the opening scene of episode 2 to be where the virus was discovered?
It didn't really add anything to the plot except by cementing that a vaccine is impossible, but then the show acts as if the Fireflies could still make a vaccine without adding an explanation as to how.
Imagine if we cut some of the flashback in episode 3 and instead focused on how the Fireflies were trying to make a vaccine, what did they discover that convinced them they could. Then the flashback in episode 2 at least adds something as suddenly the fireflies have done what scientists in 2003 with all their logistics and tech could not.
But we don't get that and all that flashback does to the main plot is hang the idea in front of you that a vaccine is impossible.
Presumably this was not the intention as in interviews Druckman stated that this episode *was* supposed to be about the darker side to love, as Joel would've slaughtered the Fireflies to save Ellie regardless of a vaccine or not, but at the same time the show almost implies Joel is even more correct here than in the game because with what we have seen the idea that a vaccine is impossible and that the Fireflies may be worse is all but established and nothing was done to push against it.
Ask yourself what good thing does the show mention the fireflies are doing? They're hiring kids to carry out bombings, Ellie notes they purposefully blew up food storage facilities to try and push for revolution all while FEDRA, for all its faults, has maintained some level of order and when we do see an uprising in the show overthrow FEDRA the results are even worse.
Basically, we get set up for elements of the show that didn't go anywhere, and as I said, that's my biggest criticism of the show.
Which sucks, because The Last of Us has some pretty bad world building in the games that could use some expanding on, and the show looked like it would do that... but it kinda gave up, I guess?
Episode 3 is the best isolated episode of television in awhile.
The writing, Nick Offerman, and gorgeous way they ended on the curtains like the game's menu screen.
I wish the episode would be more connected to the main plot, but yeah, is a great episode, I totally would see a show just about them, upgrading the house collecting resources, farming.., a slice of live zombie apocalypse
If it were a movie, it would be in my top 10 favorite movies ever. Its was so damn good.
@@justinianthe1st790 It's a shame Craig Mazin acted like people had to be "tricked" into watching a gay romance, especially on HBO Max.
I don't think I'm alone in saying I'd have liked to see Bill and Frank be part of the main cast instead of buried like this was a very special episode.
Objectively worst episode, they ruined any sense of subtlety the game had
I'm probably biased because by coincidence, episode 3 was the first episode I saw and was speechless. Then ... i got disappointed by the rest of the story. That episode is done so well I expected the rest of the show to follow. And sadly it was just ok.

I felt that seeing the town Joel’s brother is a part of, seeing how nice and safe it is was a better decision than in game, for the sake of gameplay you meet Joel’s bro at their power plant that gets overrun which yeah it’s fun but you don’t get that break from the horror.
Its funny, the 3rd episode started with me not caring and being like "can we get back to the story" and by the end of it, that window being open felt like such a punch to the gut. They did a great job showing their relationship evolving and making me care about them and moreover, what they MEANT to eachother.
You could have named "The Other Guy" It's Murray Bartlett. He has been putting in fantastic performances in for the past few years in a lot of varied roles.
This was a good tv representation of the game. Most of it abides the story very well, yet still having some originality to it. Fantastic job from the directors and actors of the show.
I wish they had abided a bit less by the ending, since that sucks in both versions, but oh well.
@@4203105 There was no way they were ever going to touch the ending since it's arguably the most iconic part.
Hard disagree.
@@justin9744 currently running an investigation to find the suspect "who asked"
Not to downplay the effort and talent because it will never be easy but it's not a game for which that much work had to be done to make it fit for the screen.
I find the Last of Us quite frustrating. It's good, I won't deny that, but it bothers me to see it put on a pedestal as a showcase for what games can do. What it's mostly good at is emulating what movies and TV do well. A successful adaptation into that medium also doesn't mean much while people are saying "finally good videogame adaptation".
My biggest gripe was just feeling like SO much wasted time. Despite the ep's length a lot of the important character building blocks were left out or not well paced after bills story. By the time the finale comes it's over in a blink because the writers kind of screw around.
Also dedicating A WHOLE EP to Ellie and Riley was a bland af because it was a DLC. Non-crucial information to the plot. A goodie bag for players who wanted more after the game, but it just chops off the pacing in this show for me. idk they could have shown flashbacks of Ellie & riley in small parts throughout the whole show to waste less time until they found an appropriate moment to reveal her end and a traumatized Ellie discovering her immunity. More impact that way idk.
After ep 8 with the cannibals there needed to be another episode of Joel and Ellie just enjoying each others company like in the game while also dreading the trip. So by the time the finale hits (preferably a 10th ep) it really rips you apart seeing Joel come to the end of their adventure and having to chose to let her go.
As far as game adaptations go, this one set the bar really high and was great. But there was still wasted potential.
Nick Offerman is better getting an Emmy for that performance. Otherwise I'm going to flip some tables.

Episode 3 had an incredibly slow pacing and technically in the grand scheme of the story could've been skipped. I loved the episode, but IMO it could've been cut a few minutes shorter to give more time to the main duo.

on the other hand i loved episode 9's length. it was straight to the point and the fact that it ended "early" gave me time afterwards (as someone who didn't know the story) to think about what happened
I watched a lot of reaction videos to Ep. 3. Even the most gangster ass, monosyllabic cavemen I saw were crying. They had a weird reflex when they realized they were gay. But most of them got over the uncomfortableness they had and thought it was beautiful. I think the love that episode got actually says a lot for how far we’ve come.

19:26. Not even 2 weeks earlier, Kathleen's Militia killed all of the FEDRA in Kansas City for the freedom of the people. But, her quest for revenge against Henry for getting her brother killed resulted in her, Perry, & most of her militia getting killed by the Horde of Infected. So, now there's hardly anyone left to defend the city as the Horde makes its way towards it. Seems like a good example to foreshadow what might come in Season 2.
Joel whipping out the Chef Boyardee and Boggle in the same scene where the Murano is in the background was the funniest thing I've ever seen.
It's like they were just rushing through all their product placements that they forgot to do earlier in the show.
I agree with the point in the beginning of the review how different mediums affect the way we interact and perceive a story. That being said I only missed some of the moments of levity from the game.
When we arive at the end of the road Joel's reaction to Ellie, comparing her to his daughter felt strange, bacause without the silent moments walking through the ruins of the world, intercut with small jokes every now and then to build their relationship we get to the end with only glimpses of what we were supposed to have felt. We can understand where his feeling come from and Pedro's acting does a lot of heavy lifting there, but we haven't seen a lot of it actually play out in the series, robbing the weight of the final episode.
The scenes with the giraffes is such a pivotal point in the game bacause after fighting your way through hell to get to that point you stop to breath in almost a surreal experiense, whereas in the series you dont really have as strong of a frenetic experience to break from.
Also, the series was the perfect place to flash out the enemies you kill like what they tried to do, but it doesn't feel like the series wants you to feel empathy for them, going against the whole point of "this is the apocalipse and we are all just people doing what we can" from the secound game and more of "these are the bad guys, go nuts" of every action shooter. For most of it, anyway.
In the end it is indeed really well produced, acting is great all around and the script is well rounded with all it needed to tell the story and some great choises in changes to it but reatining the same message overall. I just wish we had more time with these characters and this world, with is not a bad feeling to have "I just wish I could see more", so yeah, it was a great series.
The episode 3 hit me so hard, I couldn't stop thinking about it for days after watching. And you said it all, it's because it felt so real and genuine, seeing real love and happinnes in the hell that the world has become. I connected with the characters in such a level that I can't remember the last time it happened to me in a TV show
The thing about episode 7 involving it being an entire flashback episode is that I feel that the game did that one better both present-day and past scenes took place in a mall one where Ellie was trying to save Joel and fight for her life and the other where Ellie was enjoying being a kid and hanging out with her best friend I felt it really would have been more interesting to see Ellie wandering around a snow-covered mall maybe trying to hide from some Infected or Raiders as she's looking for what she needs to help Joel and while she's hiding she gets a glimpse at something that reminds her of the time that she spent with her friend and it could have led into one of the flashbacks.
I was excited to see your review ❤ I very much enjoyed the show and slightly thought you might not but was looking forward to listening to your critiques. Glad you enjoyed the show and your review was a good listen 😊
It was good to see the voice actors of the game as characters in the show
My problem was that in the game you felt Joel go from wanting nothing to do with Ellie to slowly and gradually caring for her like a daughter. It felt more organic and drawn out. The show he started laughing at her jokes way too soon. I feel like they rushed their relationship to where the ending didn't feel justified. In the game, even though it felt wrong, you could feel his motivations. You couldn't decide if Joel was a monster or if you would've done the same thing. In the end of the show it just felt selfish.
You can tell when Adam is invested in an episode when he is either praising the acting and the writing, or complaining about how the floor breaks lmao
Hahaha I loved the Chris Stuckman reference at the end. :) Another great video from Adam.
I like how Adum showed the IMDB ratings for episodes 3 vs episode 7 and the pilot. It really demonstrates why it's so important to make your own analysis of media rather than basing your opinions on the broad ratings shown on large media review sites.
bro those sound effects at the end when he was blasting the guys in the hospital 😂
It’s so weird hearing you saying you love a story I had to do a double take and check if I was on the right channel 😂
Unexpected crossover with that 'get Druckmannised' line.
Right? Just "huh? Adum knows the positive optimist reviewer?"
As a lover of the first game as well, I had to give the show a go. Had to hop off again after the first big scene cause it was done nowhere near as well as the game. Felt like everything was gonna be the same but with less impact.
Good choice. The show sucked.
Cliched as it may sound but one of my fiance best friends worked as a prop master/set design. It was really cool to see his designs and eventual prop work. Buddy, worked on this, the exclusive muppets show and even a bit.... on that misconceived R.E. netflix bomb.
I made the mistake of watching the "game movie" on youtube before the show came out and it´s so much better than the show. The acting, the dialogue, the action: it´s all significantly better than whats in the show.
What is the “game movie”? Is it just clipped together cutscenes/cinematics?
@@elsa_gbasically
It's not a mistake, the show is a mistake.
I didn't notice the dog not growling on first viewing, but now that you pointed it out, I can't unsee it.
Curious to know if Adam watched any of the behind the scenes stuff that plays after each episode that gives some background as to why some of the decisions were made.
this show rapidly became one of my absolute favorites. it’s genuinely such a good portrayal of humanity when pushed to an extreme, every action the characters take feels deserved, thought out and realistic.
i’m a sucker for character-based stories, and this is, on a fundamental level, just that. there’s no bad people and good people, the show presents real, flawed individuals and makes us perfectly understand why they do what they do, whether we agree with them or not, like the infamous climax in episode 9.
i love it, haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since i watched it.
Glad you enjoyed the show. Hopefully more studios take the reception as a sign to produce high quality video game adaptations.
Please no, there's going to be a lot of good stuff sure, but it will kick off a trend where so many good games' reputations are going to be smeared by endless shitty adaptations.
I love seeing (or hearing I guess) Adum talk about something that he actually likes. Gives me the same vibes as when he was talking about the original Old Boy in that YMS video.
Original Old Boy is a masterpiece. I didn't know YMS liked it, but it makes complete sense. I do wish he did more videos on the productions he liked, there must be more...
So 'the skinny guy' in episode 3 was played by Australian actor Murray Bartlett, who won an Emmy for his performance in the first season of The White Lotus. Hope he gets more roles in the future
Fun fact: Bartlett can sing and play the piano really well and had to learn how to sing and play the piano terribly for that scene.
@@MilleniumRoci That is a fun fact!
Your analysis (and response to the haters) of episode 3 was perfect and awesome, thank you!!!
I went into this blind as I never played the games and absolutely loved 1-3. I think you said it well, my expectations were too high after those. I still enjoyed the show as a whole though
3, really?
@@kiamventer4456 yes I found myself enjoying the character development as well as Nick offermans performance. What did you not like about it?
i guess i'm gonna have to play the game now, since i agree with everything you said about the show and you love the game so much. Thank for the review. :)
I think a good point of episode three is that they won.
They got to live and die of old age with the person they love.
also plays into the theme of “it’s always worth it to keep goin” and the importance of human connections and relations, also inspire and show the younger joe a new way to be born again and live

There are aspects to the show that I feel the game did much better, spoiler for episode 8
When Ellie kills David and runs into Joel after walking away. I felt it was more impactful in the game where Joel finds Ellie chopping up David and stops her, and tries to calm her down Ellie snaps out of it, realizes what she had done, then hugs Joel felt much more impactful in the game plus the music really packed more of a punch.
30:08 that came out of nowhere 😂
Thank you so much for adding Master Chief death noises Adum. Seriously thank you
Show was great. And episode 3 was actually my favorite. Gay Ron Swanson surviving the apocalypse should be a show in itself. I don't even think a straight couple would work as well. A straight man finding a woman survivor does not have the same effect as a man finding another man. Unfortunately. Theres an essential "fear" of other male survivors as they could potentially overpower you and take your shit. Theres a tension that I don't think would be there otherwise that I think plays more into the moment of intimacy. I didn't play the games, so I was expecting the survivor to take advantage of the situation and make Nick's character suffer for welcoming him in. When that didn't happen, it was a greater pay off for me. But who knows, maybe I'm just biased.
It was super nice to meet you at FWA, Adum! It was a huge surprise for sure, and I hope you didn’t get recognized too often and you had a ton of fun!
Overall the game is slightly better for me
Same, but I appreciate that they changed aspects of the show even if I didn’t like every change. Made it enjoyable for the people who already knew what was coming.
I think so too! Its a very good series. The game has a little bit more going for it but the show changed stuff that made complete sense to be changed because a show or movie is something you have to FEEL, you cant experience it interactively except with your emotions
What an incredible breath of fresh air to hear you talk positively about filmmaking. While I love hearing you explain what didn't work in other movies, there's something really educational and intriguing to here your thoughts about things that impacted you positively as well! I hope you do more of this on the channel, though I'm sure you also bring some of that energy to the podcast (that I will definitely get to one of these days...)
Interesting perspective. I actualy really liked the game-y parts as a homage to the orignal medium. Havent played the game yet, so it was fun to guess, what scenes mightve come from gameplay sections.
I haven't played the game, but the show convinced me to get it as soon as I get a PS5.
The comparison to brokeback is the isolation of the couple. not as ignorant of a comparison as you think
I think that piece of music in Arrival was originally used in Shutter Island, the DiCaprio film from a few years earlier.
I think for the scene in the burning building, to make it more tense and less rushed they could have filled the room up with smoke and have Ellie crawl around trying to escape David through the thick black blaze and have everything else play out the same but have some tense moments where Ellie could maybe have to hold in a cough from the smoke. could have fixed both the problems with one cool unique design element.
Translating media is always bound to have problems, but I think everyone who worked on the show did a pretty good job with it.
I've never played the game, didn't know anything about it, and it definitely felt like the daughter was the main character. I was devasted and very impressed with the narrative at the end of the pilot
it makes perfect sense why you wouldnt like the song from arrival in this, but i love that track so much and it made me feel nostalgic for it because of how impactful arrival was for me and i dont think that was a bad thing. cheap for sure but its welcomed imo
Episode 3 is like Broke Back Mountain in that it is almost it's own standalone movie.
I was quite taken with this episode and it solidified the series for me. I can't believe a television show took me for such a ride
My dad has cried very few times… episode three was one of them.. the whole family was speechless after
I do not believe you.
@@justin9744Yeah the way people suck episode 3 off seems very forced and people are just scared to be labelled homophobic for criticising it.
@@samuelgeaney7556for real. The number of people absolutely fellating The show for that episode is just setting off red flags all over my mind.
Maybe it’s my highly attuned gaydar and being able to recognize when people are trying hard to pander to me.. ‘look, there’s gay! You like this right? There’s is gay here! Gay!”
I hate it.
That and all the plot holes and cheesy tea party nonsense just gave me ‘Ellie’s Lesbo love shack” vibes from the second game..
But no, because I like blokes, I’m supposed to just fawn over the episode as though I’ve been blessed by Jesus or something…
Pass.

Very interesting to see how fans of the original think of this show since the show was actually the gateway of the story for me.
I will say that the game is worth every second. If you have a PS3, PS4, or PS5, it is worth a look. My girlfriend cried her eyes out and I may have had an allergic reaction in my eyes.
If you like the game, pass on the show.
I highly recommend Tim's video on Hello Future Me about TLOU 2. He had critisims too, but has some really good points about the story and what it was trying to do.
Given that the composer is from Argentina, the pronounciation is Santaolasha (emphasis on the penultimate syllable)
The Last of Us games feel like someone obliged to make a game but really wanted to make a movie or show. Such bland games with pretty alright narrative for the first game.
Episode 3 was so insanely good that the rest of the series, though great, couldn't live up to that immense high. One of the best episodes of tv I've seen in years and years.
That’s a sad condemnation of the state of modern television as I’ve ever heard.
Did you notice the actor playing Ellie's mom in the last episode is the voice actor for Ellie in the game?
Was waiting for your video on The Last of Us.
Game was better, if you want actual depth play it or watch the cutscenes from youtube. I find this TV series a watered down version of something better.
Also ep3 being about "something worth fighting for" ending with suicide is really funny way to describe that episode xDD
I rewatched the first few episodes on mushrooms with my roommate (I don't do mushrooms often) was so amazing. Looked insane and had this feeling where every person was part of the environment. Also the gay couple episode video had me crying pretty hard by the end at how beautiful it was. Great show.
Great video bro
Speaking of the not knowing the the skinny guy's name, that's along the lines of the mnemonic I use to remember which is which out of Bill and Frank. Bill is the big one so the other is Frank, though I supposed you'd have to remember both of their names first.
Agree with you on TLOU 1 is a masterpiece and the show had some tastes of that in an accessible format I could share with friends. Sucks to hear about the copy headaches.
Hey adam idk if you'll ever read this but do you feel like you being familiar with the characters from playing the game fills in the gaps of the show's characters? Because i honestly feel like thats the case for me. I dont think the show alone builds up tess, sam/henry and david enough.
My wife, a non gamer, said pretty much the same thing. "We didn't really spend a lot of time with the main characters and didn't really get to know them that well. So, in retrospect, while good, episodes 3 and 7 are a waste."
20:10. "Threat growling can be very subtle to the untrained eye. It may be at low volume accompanied by a closed mouth, dilated pupils, stiff body language and no breathing. Owners often don't recognize a threat unless it comes in high volume and a ferocious looking snarl"
Awesome analysis and opinion of the show. I wish it had more video gamey stuff like the over-shoulder shots or Ellie crawling somewhere to open something (plus more combat). Sadly, this show hasn’t left me with anything that the video game didn’t already do. Again, great video
Resident Evil Seems unadaptable...yet the guy who wrote SCARY MOVIE 3 AND 4 made The Last of Us adaptable !
I mean to be fair he was also the showrunner for Chernobyl and that was pretty great
Yeah, turns out that if you stick to the source material of an already good story and just expand on characters and worldbuilding people will like it, who would've thought!
I think re2 could make a solid action horror movie that's less than 2 hours long. There's very little information that you need to know, the characters are incredibly basic, it could seriously be an awesome B movie. Though I think the entire Claire plot could be deleted. re2 is the only one that feels almost adaptable.
The Last of Us was already kind of a movie. To fuck it up completely would be an achievement
@@user-ly2ll5od1rI think RE4/7 are also highly adaptable. As you said about 2 I see 4 being a really solid B action/horror film. 7 I see being an atmospheric psychological horror movie along the lines of the Christophe gans silent hill movie. There is massive potential with the franchise overall in the right hands IMO
They really turned up the graphics for this one.
Liza Johnson directed Silacon Valley and Barry? You gotta check those shows out for sure, Adam.
14:33 THANK YOU, this was my one main issue with the episode too. I even began to write this comment to say that including it just felt like cheating before you said it yourself. Loved Murray Bartlett's expression at 13:20 as well.
The third episode really encapsulates the "paradise lost" element. It's the last bastian of human civilization. They had a farm, hot showers, electricity, etc.
It clashed with the rest of the world building of the show, in a very bad way…
@@Beuwen_The_Dragonwriters, directors, actors, showrunners, setpiece designers, FX artists and an army of HBO number crunchers all came to the correct conclusion that the kind of person whose media literacy is weaker than their weird hangups about certain types of person is not worth catering to. Episode 3 is a great episode, but it feels so isolated from the main plot (and the show is very plot driven), but still a great episode, it touches in so many themes and is so devastating, really love it.
And the final episode, it feels kind of rush, it could have done something more to end the season stronger, but is still a very satisfying end.
Pd. I'm familiar with the games but I haven't played any of them.
I feel like it was still pertaining to the plot though, as at the end it serves to further flesh out Joel’s character development via the note that Bill left him. Also the relationship between Bill + Frank being a sort of parallel example to Joel + Ellie (Along with every other relationship ie. Henry + Sam, Ellie + Riley, etc), and with each of these relationships ending with either losing someone or both dying just pushes Joel’s drive to save Ellie in the last scene to 1000%.
*episode 3 was the worst episode
I think episode 3 was really good. Incredible even. I just think having it as a oneshot made more sense. I'm not entirely convinced it was necessary for Joel's story, at least not the whole episode. I think a lot of the game boiled down to a character drama about Joel and dedicating so much time to something else, even though I got it (Bill and Frank's story is Joel and Ellie's in a lot of ways), felt like a lot for a nine episode season.
Liza Johnson is a director on some Barry episodes, which is a show I think you would enjoy.
I really wish YMS would cover more series
Let's be real, we're all jumping to the Episode 3 timestamp first.
"Why would anyone make the Brokeback Mountain comparison?"
Maybe because the episode director admitted the goal was to "trick people into watching a gay romance."
@@mariokarter13People took a joke and twisted it like he was some moustache twirler lol Same thing with Druckmann saying "we don't make games that are fun".
@@jerpusmaximus The problem is that the episode itself is a complete non sequitur. The episode based on the Left Behind DLC at least had the excuse that it was Ellie's backstory. Both of the characters in episode 3 are dead before we ever meet them.
@@mariokarter13 Even if that's true (source please) that still doesn't make it anything like brokeback mountain.
@@mariokarter13 It's an exploration of the themes of the show. It's an indirect exploration of Joel as he is the same as Bill. It's an exploration of Joel's backstory, as he is in part of the flashbacks.
Also Ellie and Joel are in 27 minutes of the episode (Joel more if you count the Flashback), Bill and Frank are in 45 minutes. You act like we never see Ellie and Joel in the episode at all.
Episode 3 was so great, a real highlight of the series.
