REDEMPTION IMMINENT you are going to have to redeem yourself now. Or else this can get lumped into "great fishing story bro." This will be the punchline for a joke that could have been so good. I installed a fire extinguisher in my kitchen the day we moved in to our home, 4 years ago. Your fire reminded me that I had done that, but could not recall exactly where. So, of course I went and looked. (Right on the wall, over the trash can.) Then I also though about the possibility of fire in my kitchen. It was fairly high, as when we moved in we had electric burners on the range. But, I replaced that range with an induction one. No source of ignition exists anymore. I never thought about that when I installed the induction range, but that is a pretty big advantage. Not that there could not be fire from another source but we have reduced the possibility by a lot. In any case, thanks for the reminder that occasionally, we need to remind ourselves of where our emergency response equipment is located and that we need to verify that it is still functional.

I'm supprised no one had a desent carb to loan you or putting one on from a parts store. I totally get wanting to have a rig or toys that always perform well without having to wrench on them! I take alot of pride in my bikes, sleds, trucks, trailer... from having all electrical items working to having extra gear & full box of tools. My tunnel bags are crazy heavy with extra gear, goggles & 2 extra pair of gloves. Each sled has servival gear, first aid kits & lightweight shovels. Alot like you guys have done with your wreckers now. The crazy part is how little gear we use to worry about when we're younger & we did what Matt does... ahhh we will figure figure something out. Our emergency pull start straps were always busted & tied together to make a tow strap... I finally started packing a Leatherman. We bought gloves with black liners so no one would notice how greasy they were... sleds have come along ways & we have more funds for safty gear & actual elastic straps for towing. It's a way different world than the 80-90s! The best part is you had a blast with good friends & made new memories!

Re driver side door hits: Back in the early 1960's when we did demo derbies on the east coast, the cars had to be pretty much stock with no structural steel added. Drivers side door hits were frowned upon unless they were unintentional. As far as your participation in this event, I saw a video the day after the event and was let down by your lack of performance. At that time I thought you were playing a "hide and don't get hit" game with only minor contact to keep from being eliminated for no contact. Now that I realize you were actually having engine problems, all I can say is I'm still waiting for you to come ready for the fight and to put on a good show! MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Having personally thrashed together derby cars by myself in a weekend, i fully understand the absolute exhaustion of finally having the car "maybe good enough" and it still wont run. It's absolutely soul crushing. I do find the difference in regional rules very interesting. those cars are way different, the whole cage is built different. our door bars go outside the doors. The absolute calm during the countdown is entirely accurate. As is the distraction of starting the dang engine, its funny how the tunnel vision in such a high stress situation is so hard to ignore.

that's good advice. I keep one on my welding cart at all times. It is the most likely cause of a fire in my garage and central to any fabrication happening. What is interesting to me about decisions like where to place the extinguishers or alarms is there are often events, tragedies, that are learned from to help prevent future tragedies.
For instance having the doors in a public place swing outward. It seems like a trivial decision that could be made based on so many factors from the flow of people to the architectural design, but doors swing out so people don't become trapped in a panic situation. Looks like the NFPA code actually says the doors must swing out if it is serving a space where 50 or more people will be.
We have the Iroquois Theatre fire to thank for that safety improvement. 602 people died in that single event. Many factors contributed to the high death toll. One was egress doors which needed to be opened inward. Another was difficult to operate latches. This tragedy also helped spur the implementation of panic bars so in an emergency you just push the bar to open the latched door in the outward direction.

Matt, BRO, you need to get HALON fire extinguishers for the shop to pair with the powder extinguishers. The HALON will remove the oxygen around the fire without dumping powder all over the motor. Also the HALON is like an aerosol so you can use it over and over unlike the powder style that need to be refilled no matter how much you use. HALON is so much cleaner and convenient but it is more expensive than powder but no cleanup is priceless.

    • @buckwildxp1

Halon is not a great option. As a respiratory protection specialist at a commercial nuclear power plant I feel it is necessary to say this. I recognize your point, that powder style extinguisher are messy and can leave behind damaging and corrosive residues. However the oxygen removing properties of Halon, in a confined space, are immediately hazardous to life in said space. I'm sorry for sounding like a know it all but people need to be very aware of the hazards of any fire suppression techniques and products. I agree with you on Matt needing a better fire response plan, though! 😂

One of my old tricks for a poor running engine is to use an unlit propane torch and move it around the engine bay to see if the engine picks up rpm. I'm essentially checking blind for vacuum leaks. Sometimes it yields a result, sometimes not, but it always rules in or out a vacuum leak. What a beast that car was. With more time....

East coaster here. Haven't derbied in more than a few years, but when I did a lot of that cage that you guys use is illegal.
No door bars, one piece of tubing (with a max dimension) between the B pillars & that's it. Driver's door hits are illegal, and they paint a white line on the wheels so the judges can watch for braking on door hits. (door hits are kinda legal if you contact while braking). That & "No Imps" are the standard county fair rules. There are derbies around with far less rules, but you'll see the no drivers door rule a lot here.
I wonder if BSF would put a team together for a derby? I know I already want to see him show you all up at the Wisconsin Wrecker Games, but man I'd like to see how Eric does as BSF derby crew chief!

If you can don't use a fire extinguisher. Get your air hose with a air blower. The extinguisher makes a hell of a mess.

Around here they paint to doors white and it's a foul to hit the doors. Some don't have cages in them. So it's a safety reason. Also they normally hit with the rear of the car to keep the engine going longer. They also flip the rear axle over to make the forward gears go in reverse to get more speed in reverse. I never have seen a derby where they smash the front of their own car up.

Call your local FD, they should be willing to set up a training seminar to teach HOW to PROPERLY use an extinguisher… a company I once worked for did that for us

So much good stuff! But! The editing on this video must of been crazy (and is crazy good!), and the build-it montage edit was amazing, the audio edit and tie-in. Really really great stuff. Loved this series because of seeing the whole family working together (mostly). Great stuff!

Great stuff to all involved. I am sure that the engine fire and the use of a fire extinguisher on it caused you engine challenges. You melted something and the chemicals in those extinguishers is not helpful to anything other than smothering a fire.

MATT in the 70's Drivers Door shot was a instant DQ. There is a LOT MORE expensive stuff done now. had to run a full firewall. there was always a trans fire from the trans puke tube, on the exust..... Great Vid. Miss TREVER... He was like part of the family. Miss ED doing the weather reports.

Quick suggestion from a mechanic and volunteer firefighter: halon or CO2 extinguishers work well in shops because they leave no residue on or in the engine. No cleanup whatsoever.

Run derbies in Eastern Wisconsin, and at all of them, the only door that would get you black flagged was intentionally hitting the driver's door.

powder fire extinguishers are highly corrosives and destroy pretty much everything they are sprayed at. prefferably you use foam for everything (except oil fires^^)
