This is the greatest sport on earth. Those who say otherwise have not seen it played, nor understand the rules. It's fast, brutal and spectacular. The game was first played in 1858. The Melbourne football club, established in 1859, is the oldest in the world.. Being the 4th highest attended domestic sport on the planet says it all. There is nothing that compares to being in a crowd of 100,000 people cheering. Welcome to the AFL rabbit hole. If you are genuinely interested, I suggest you start by watching the highlights of the 2018 West Coast vs Collingwood Grand Final, and then begin your journey. Greatest marks, big hits, best goals. Aussie rules started in the late 1800's. Rugby is a different sport completely; plus we have two codes, Rugby Union and Rugby League. The AFL developed from the expansion of the Victorian Football League(VFL) in the 1980's. Most games now have quarters that mostly exceed 30 minutes. The AFL has teams from Victoria, along with teams from South Australia, Western Australia, New South Wales and Queensland.

  • @Roddrummer
    @Roddrummer 2 года назад +16

They are COMPLETELY different. Both rugby codes are sports based around huge blokes running into each other monotonously over and over, whereas Australian football is based on extreme all-round athleticism. These players run 13-16 KMs per game, and they have to be incredibly strong, have amazing endurance and to execute the difficult skills of the game under constant extreme pressure is incredible. At the same time, they can soar spectacularly like an eagle, almost defying gravity. It is BY FAR the superior spectacle.

What is good about the game is the oval ball. When the creators of Aussie Rules, Tom Wills and others, designed the game, they deliberately wanted an element of randomness in the game and so chose a ball that would be erratic in play, which is the oval ball. The ball keeps every player on alert!

To tell the difference...American football is almost the same as Rugby..since American football originally came from rugby.
Aussie Rules football is a totally separate game that was invented in Australia and was declared a proper sport in the 1850's...even before soccer, rugby or American football...making it the oldest football code in the world.
It has small leagues in other countries (including the US) that started by Australians that moved to those countries where locals took a liking to it...but because of Australia's relative isolation it has not had much time to spread around the world.

In the mid 1800s the cricket players travelled by sea, took 3 months plus, so they stayed a couple years then sailed back, the cricket players invented Aussie rules to keep fit in the off season, the very 1st game had hundreds of people, no teams, just get the ball 🙄, the biggest clubs have 100 thousand members, smaller teams have 50 to 60 thousand members, our field in Adelaide seats 55 thousand, in Melbourne the MCG seats 100 thousand, at about 30 dollars 💸 for a day ticket, 400 dollars for 11 game membership 👍

Love seeing your passion for a finding a new sport. To be honest the only real similarities between AFL and Rugby is that you can you can tackle and the occastional field goals kicked in rugby can sometimes be similar to AFL goals. AFL is much more of an airiel sport compared to rugby with marks (catching the ball) and in particular speckies (a player jumping on another player to mark the ball) being a pretty iconic part of AFL.
Some videos recommendations to give a bit of a wide range of AFL things:
    - Cyril Rioli highlights (Probably the most skilled player I've watched in my life)
    - Either the top 50 marks of all time - Or the Best of the decade: 2010-2019 spectacular marks
    - Eddie Betts greatest goals of all time

Sydney are consistently a good team and you usually see them in the top 8.

We have all codes of Football in Australia, but Rugby’s roots are in New South Wales and Queensland. AFL’s roots are in the southern States Tasmania, Victoria and South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory. Saying that, Victoria now has a Rugby team and AFL has a small footprint in New South Wales, ACT and Queensland. We play, soccer all over Australia and we actually have an American gridiron ground locally. We start attending “Footy” early. It is a family game and it is rare that a family member supports a different team. It’s like a religion. I once sat next to a couple who had their baby dressed in their team coloured jump suit in the baby capsule seat. It is a very fast game that gets so thrilling when the score swaps backwards and forwards. We organised a Company night at the football once and a Vietnamese member of staff attended with us and brought her husband along. They became so excited that the husband was vibrating up and down on the balls of his feet. So funny to see a first timer get that excited. Australians love their football no matter what code it is. Imagine one City, Melbourne in the State of Victoria having NINE professional AFL teams and another regional team, Geelong. It’s like the video says “it’s a big deal”.

My preference is Aussie Rules over Rugby or Rugby League. It is player v player / one on one. Really any person can play Aussie Rules regardless of size. If you watch an AFL game note on the back of the players team Guernsey you can notice a small rectangular shape. This is a GPS tracker and the broadcaster can show you how much ground a player has covered, during a game. It is nothing for some of the players to run basically a half marathon during a game. When you at the ground watching a game the time clock counts up at the start of each quarter. The actual quarter is 20 minutes, but as a spectator at the ground you have no idea when the siren goes to end that quarter as the ground clock does not stop. The quarter could go 30 minutes plus. The TV broadcast is the opposite so it takes the excitement out if it is the last quarter and a close game.
To see the passion I would suggest watching the "Final Draw Collingwood V StKilda 2010 Grand Final Documentary"
There have only been 3 drawn Grand Finals in over 100 years plus.
Enjoy our own indigenous sport. Cheers.

As someone who's grown up in the UK, I don't get Aussie rules, but from everything I've seen it looks amazing! Hard hits, athleticism, teamwork, skill, tactics, it's got it all. The problem is it is only really played in Australia so no one else really knows about it yet. No one else grew up playing it, can watch it and follow it regularly and appreciate the finer details of the game. Rugby (union more so than league now) has been played around the world and has the broadcast time and marketing it keep up its fanbase, though I suspect is not as entertaining to watch as AFL if you grew up with both. A similar niche sport that i think you'll be intrigued by is Gaelic Football, only really played in Ireland!

    • @flamingfrancis
      @flamingfrancis 2 года назад +1

If you look up AFL teams there are a number of Irish players spread amongst the teams. The two codes have many similarities (the Irish are the maddest) so much so that to gain an Internationl presence the two combine to play what is called International Rules. So each year an All Australian team plays an All Ireland team. The AFL boffins do their best to spread the word but it is difficult to ever see it with the global popularity of RU for World Cup and Northern and southern Hemisphere Nations Tourrnaments and indeed the Olympics Rugby Sevens.

    • @russe19642
      @russe19642 2 года назад

St Kilda. We are halfway through the season and are desperate to remain in the top 8. We were 4th on the ladder until last weekend. Saints lost their game and other teams won and pushed us down to 8th.
I just re-watched your video on AFL, and for someone that has no idea about the game in that 10 minutes or so they have basically explained the rules of the game for a learner. Really there are not that many rules to the game. The crowd know the rules and they let the umpire know about it if the reckon the umpie gets it wrong.

4:27 thats not quite right. A 'mark' is when you catch the ball, after another player (from either team) kicks the ball and it travels over 15 meters.
If any player (from either team) touches the ball in between the kicker disposing of it, and the receiver catching it, then it is not a mark and it is play on.
Same as in when scoring a goal. 6 points through the middle.
1 point either side (big and little post).
1 point if it hits the post (the two middle, larger posts)
1 point if it is touched by an opposition player, in any way, before crossing the goal line.
1 point if touched by a team mate by anything other than their foot/below the knee.
out of bounds, and a free kick to opposition player if ball hits either small post 'on the full' (which means leaving the players boot and striking the small post without the ball having hit the ground first)
and a throw in if the previous action happened and the ball did hit the ground (of either team).
After having wrote this it looks fucking confusing but it all makes perfect sense once you watch it a few times.

This is the first football anywhere. Older than your NRL. It is fast and fun, played by elite players that can run up to 20 kilometre’s a game while keeping all skills. It was started to keep our Cricket players fit during the off season. This is more fun than Cricket and the Women’s teams are just as tough, they are the AFLW league and are getting more teams each year. There is usually a live game on RUclips each weekend because a lot of Americans have learned to love it.
You have 50 teams in America who play it but they don’t belong to Cities you would expect. Look up Mason Cox, he is our only American player and in my team. Mason is 6’ 11” tall and he signed up before he ever saw a game.
People here love one or the other but more of us love AFL and Rugby League. I was raised to love all sports so I love Rugby Union and soccer too. I have had an NRL team since I was a child. My Dad played Rugby League and Field Hockey after I was born, he was also a Road Cycle Racer. He taught us if either team does something good then you had better acknowledge it. If we can only cheer for our team then stay home. I miss him.

Great reaction mate. You missed hearing them say Aussie rules has the fourth highest weekly attendances of any sport in the world.
Rugby is only played mainly in New South Wales and Queensland. The crowd for the NRL rugby match of the day is anything from about 12,000 to 20,000 people. Many AFL matches are double or even triple those amounts. Special weekly games can draw as many as 90,000 people.
Aussie rules is by far Australia’s number one sport. Many diehard rugby fans don’t like AFL, and believe their game is better. The crowd numbers tell the true story. Most AFL fans don’t like the stop-start nature of rugby because our game has less stoppages, is fast and furious, has high-scoring and is super exciting. (A grand final is usually around 100,000 people.)
AFL was first codified in 1854 and is older than soccer, American football, and basketball. Tom Wills created Aussie rules as a way of keeping cricketers fit during the off-season. Some people say he took some aspects of an English rugby game, but he had a close association with Australia’s aboriginal people, who for decades before that played a game called Marn Grook and it’s believed that he got many of the ideas for the game from them.
Some parts of the video are badly explained. You must bounce the ball “within” 15m, so many players bounce it before that so that they do not exceed the distance which would result in a free kick to the other team. Umpires are a pretty good judge of if you have run too far without bouncing it.

*Some people say he took some aspects of an English rugby game, but he had a close association with Australia’s aboriginal people, who for decades before that played a game called Marn Grook and it’s believed that he got many of the ideas for the game from them*
Tom wills had wealthy parents and they sent him to England to attend Rugby School of Grammar in the town of Rugby in 1849 for higher education. He didn't just take "some" aspects of Rugby, then known as Football but he became their Captain of the Football (Rugby) and Cricket teams while he was there. Early Australian Football had many similarities to Pre-codified Rugby and Soccer games, this is all documented.
Although I do believe some (only small portion imo) aspects of Marn Grook are in Aussie Football, there is zero documented evidence suggesting he grabbed ideas from it. We only have verbal information handed down through the generations and we all know what happens to verbal info over time, it always becomes inaccurate.

Rugby (Union) is technically older but not as a codified sport with it's own rules. Australian Football is the oldest codified football game in the world.
Australian Football invented 1858 codified in 1859.
Rugby Union started in 1845, was called Football then and there were many different versions of Football (Rugby), Soccer was also called Football and there were many different versions of that too, in-fact Soccer and Rugby were just a mishmash of each other before they were codified.
      Codified Football Games:
Australian Football, 1859. invented 1858, Mostly based on pre-codified Rugby and Soccer.
Soccer, 1863. Most rules adopted from Cambridge (1848) and Sheffield (1857) rules.
Rugby Union, 1871. Most of the rules were adopted from Rugby School of Grammar 1845.
Gaelic Football, 1887. Many rules adopted from Australian Rules of 1866.
Rugby League, 1895. Breakaway sport from Rugby.
Canadian Football, 1903. Mostly originally based on Rugby in 1862 but later adopted more American Style of Walter Camp 1880.

Nothing like Rugby whatsoever.....Lacrosse is closer to Aussie Rules Footy. 2Hrs on the field each week....full 360 degree motion, non-stop 30min quarters. With 200 to 250 pound guys running 10miles per games whilst getting bumped, tackled, scragged all game. They kick the ball like a QB throwing it...and they sometimes catch the ball by standing on the shoulders of others (teammates & opponents) jumping for the same catch. Teams score around 80-120pts per games..so lots of scoring (goals)...and it's been around for over 150 years (before NFL, NBA etc)...Best sport on the Planet

When you say It's a mixture of other sports, it's more likely the other way around. It was codified in 1858. It's the oldest major football code in the world. Nothing whatsoever to do with any other sport. It was originally designed to keep cricket players fit during the off season, hence the size and shape of the field - they were originally cricket grounds.

Rugby is different there are two types one is rugby league the other is rugby union and have some different rules
Both are played internationally against a number of countries
Where commonly known as Aussie rules or as you just seen Australian football which is only played in Australia 🇦🇺
The game is over hundred years old started sometime in 1800s
Also even though the balls look the same they are different and to pass the shape of the ball makes a big difference I played both sports as a child it's was the main sports play at schools even during breaks between classes like lunchtime it's Almost a way of live for kids
Every Aussie home will have a football and used at picnic when at beach or park
When they show you the score 20 is goals worth 6 points and the 10 is points that when you add up gives total of 130 points which is the most Important score as who ever has highest point total at end of game wins
Hope it helps you cheers mate enjoy
Just to confuse you some more another popular game played on off season is cricket which is another international game we play against other countries
Also plat in schools as well it's a summer sport
Where football and rugby are winter sports
    We play heaps of sport
Commonly played in schools and club levels starting as junior players
    Aussie rules football both genders
    Rugby both genders
    Basket ball both genders
    Net ball females
    Tennis both genders
    Soccer both genders
    Baseball rarer both genders
