I’m American as well and started following AFL when it would pop up on cable sports here from the late 80’s on. I’m a huge Collingwood supporter. They’re the most popular and hated club in Australia lol. What I can tell you is the game is fast, furious and exciting. If it ran same time as NFL for a whole season, I’d never watch NFL, that’s how much I love this game. It really is the best sport there is. These players are the greatest athletes on earth.

I’m an eagles supporter 😂 just had to add that in because we have a rivalry but eagles are also one of the most hated teams in the comp by other fans so go us 😂✌️ and being seriously here loved buckleys send off, he definitely deserved that and MORE, that game was amazing and he is a legend of the sport! sad to see him go!

I started following the late 80’s when it started popping up on cable sports here in the states. As a Pies supporter I have to agree the late 80’s/early 90’s AFL was so exciting to watch!

There has been a professional national Women's league since 2017 I think but smaller clubs have had girl's programs for years, this year is my 5th season playing and I've played 60 matches
Yes, the 16 yards (or 15 metres to be precise) is an approximation. It's roughly 10-12 running strides for the average player, and you can usually get away with a metre or two either way. The umpires usually won't penalize a player unless it's blatantly obvious he's run too far, because like you said, there's no way to accurately measure it on the field. And yes, it is rough on the body. Injuries are common, and some very serious, sometimes ending a player's season. You tend to breathe a sigh of relief when your team gets through a game with all players unscathed.
Haha that makes sense. I would't be surprised if an injury free season is a rare occurrence!

Richmond Tigers have won 3 of the last 4 Grand finals and Dustin Martin has been the best players so you should check his highlights. also Lance Franklin as well.

While Dusty is certainly one of the best of the modern era, if I'm to recommend a player's highlights, it would have to be Eddie Betts. Not as good an overall player as some (still a champ though), but the stuff he can do is unbelievable. One of the few players that no mater what team you support, you just have to jump to your feet and applaud him.

The atmosphere at a Grand Final is unreal. Been lucky enough to go to a few.

Been lucky to get to 1 (might even be the one they show - was a Hawks v Syd one in 2012). Will never forget the atmosphere. A buzz around the ground, silence for the National Anthem, a roar afterwards, that escalates deafeningly at the first bounce for about the first five minutes. And of course every crowd noise from then on is significantly more raucous than a minor round game.

There’s a USAFL now with teams all over your country. They have their own website where you can look up where the nearest team to you is.
I actually moved to the Netherlands at the end of last year! And after doing some research, have found that there are some teams here too!
There are quiet a few Australians working in the US that are part of the USAFL. They aren't professional players but some of them are excellent athletes.
The USAFL has 50 men's teams and 27 women's teams with over 1,000 registered players.
It is also played in Canada, South Africa, The UK, Germany, France, Russia and many other European countries.
These players have been playing since they were young

Oh I forgot to say, on Grand Final day there are over, 100,000 people in the stadium and from what I gather not many stadiums around the world can hold over that amount. I was saying I'm from Perth Western Australia and we have 2 teams in the AFL - West Coast Eagles & Fremantle Dockers. We have a brand new stadium here and world class and holds over 60,000 people with the most led lighting in a stadium in the world. Would love for you to visit Perth & Melbourne to get the perspective on the game & experience. Cheers !!
Other than the granny (grand final) another game you must attend is our Anzac Day clash at the mcg. 25 April is our Anzac Day, pretty much most important day to Aussies, where we honour our service people. Collingwood and Essendon play as a key game and it’s spine tingling. Similar to a Memorial Day game. Even all the other clubs and fans watch this and respect this game. 100,000 people and you can hear a pin drop during last post. Either game (granny or Anzac Day) if you’re lucky to attend you wear your own club guernsey with pride for the love of the game. I’ve attended a few proudly but only one where my team competed in the grand and lost!

When they explain about the score "Collingwood 20 10 130, the 20 are goals, 6 x 20= 120, the 10 are 10 points, which are added to the goals, so 20. 10. 130 equals 20x6=120+10+130. Sounds like a 7 year uni degree, but you do get use to it. Love your work brother

The grand final is fantastic, best day of the season. I wish you luck getting a ticket, every year there are people walking around with signs saying will pay big money for a spare ticket , normally a fruitless exercise.
Come to Australia between March and September for the footy season. Most games are played each weekend in the city of Melbourne.
And Adelaide, Sydney, Perth, Brisbane
as an australian it is very cool and funny to see a non aussie actually really like the sport and with the 4th highest attendence in the world with our small population it could easily be the world most loved sport
Another interesting thing about this sport is the history, some of these clubs are over 150 years old.
Melbourne is in fact the oldest continuos professional football team in any code starting back in 1859.

The Melbourne Football Club and the Geelong Football Club were both formed in 1859 and are the oldest football clubs in the world.

One of my favourite reactions so far, mate.
The record attendance is 121,696 people for the 1970 Grand Final, there's more seating and less standing room now so capacity has fallen to around 100,000. Collingwood pulls the biggest crowds and has been involved in the top 5 highest attendances of all time and regularly brings a million people through the turnstiles each year, their average attendance per game is a little over 80,000
You are by far the most intelligent person ive seen react to the afl, just the understanding of the game and your assumption are so much better then some things others say
And I saw someone say that lance franklin, Dustin Martin and gary Ablett jnr are the best players to react to. I agree with the first two but gary Ablett doesn’t have the best highlight reel, like I know he is probably the best to ever play the game but he doesn’t have the best highlights. You should react to Cyril Rioli and Eddie Betts instead. They are crazy!

I'm from south Australia mate and footy is everything here. During the season they cover front and back pages of the newspaper usually before any other news
It's an amazing game, played or followed from the age , and 10 yo me got to 1970 grand final, official crowd was 122,000 and they used to open the gates after halfway, so l got to watch approximately another 15,000 climb onto the roof of the stadium from late entries. It was deemed to dangerous so they started to limit attendance til they got it down to 100,000 seats. The crowd get so loud you can feel the ground vibrate.
Your intuition is excellent. it's a great game because play keeps going, stopping for less frequently than similar games. Soccer is similar for the continuance of play, but AFL is more aggressive and back-passing to keep control happens a lot less. Hopefully you've seen a bit more by now, and, yeah, if you can get to a grand final, you'll love it. The roar of the crowd is a physical thing that rips at your chest and makes you scream along with them. The noise goes through your body, and the play is fierce. They are elite athletes, with a bag of skills quite a bit bigger than most other team sports, and the players have a great blend of agility, endurance and toughness that makes it more exciting to watch, to my mind, than any other - and I do watch a lot of other sports around the world. AFL is like the pinnacle of them all for athleticism. And no fake injuries - these guys pride themselves on being tough, and,. for the most part, honourable sportsmen. Shout to the women's league, too, for having the same values. Cheers, mate.
There's also an Amazon prime series highlighting last season during the epidemic and such. It's called "Making Their Mark" I think. I highly reccomend it.
I am an avid "Western Bulldogs" fan in the AFL. I live in Melbourne not far from their home ground and go to the game when I can. It is such an exciting game and the players are so fit. You enjoy!
From personal experience, having traveled from the west coast of Australia to Melbourne to attend the grand final of an AFL season, I can tell you it doesn't come cheap. On top of premium priced air tickets, upwards of $1,000 return, accommodation is also hard to get and very pricey. Then comes the game day costs.
You can't just turn up and buy a ticket on the day. You must buy your ticket before the 6 month season even begins and you can't just buy a seat. You have to buy a package which consists of a breakfast including all sorts of entertainment and panel discussions, and your seat at the game. Very ordinary seats are the most likely to be available, and you'll be in a stadium with about 100,000 other people. Total cost for the exercise, excluding airfares from the US, would be in the vicinity of $4,000.
If you want a place in a corporate box, just pick any two digit number and start adding 00000's!
All that said, it's worth every penny.

It is also the most inclusive sport - any size can play, small nippy forwards, midfield bulls and smaller scrappers, lanky forwards and rucks! As a kid, even the smallest younger can believe that they could one day make it into the afl.
I absolutely love that aspect of the sport. As a basketball player, I literally remember the day that I realized i wouldn't be able to make it professionally in America because of my height and genetic composition when I was like 12. I love the equal opportunity!

I still have played some pro U21 basketball here in the Netherlands! If I set my mind to it I could probably take it further but it’s not my path. Will undoubtedly be a passion for my whole life those. Gotta make my way to Australia as soon as possible. Gotta go to a game and find some people to play some Aussie rules with!

Had I my time again, I would have elected for aussie rules - I watched it as soon as I arrived, but never found my way to a local club.

The other unique thing about AFL is there are roles for tall people but what we use to call the rovers are much smaller players - for some roles there is an advantage in being smaller.
I love it. It gives equal opportunity to a larger group of people - thus resulting in a larger pool of elite talent!

AFL is played on a cricket pitch. Early on it was a sport to keep cricket players fit in winter. Many children still play both sports.

The shorter guys play in the centre. They run an average of 20 Kilometre’s a game.
My team is Collingwood and we had your American player. Collingwood are the Magpies or just pies. We called him American pie. You always knew when he was near the ball when over 90,000 people started chanting USA.
He is loved and he had to play lower levels for 4 years until he made first grade. When they got into a Grand Final his parents flew here to watch.
We had football 10 years before you did. It was to keep Cricket players fit in the off season. It is one of the oldest codes of football anywhere and one of the best. If you love a really fast game.
I watch your football and my team is the Green Bay Packers. My Dad got me to watch everything. He played Rugby League, Field Hockey and was a bicycle road racer, a really talented one. He really needed a son first.
The black guy who takes that amazing mark is Nic Natanui, a Fijian background who is 2m (6'7 for the people who still use it) tall.

Carlton football club is one of the first founding clubs and holds the most premiership cups in the league
It is also one of the largest clubs known as the sleeping giant that the other clubs fear to awaken
we start playing this game as kids. you learn to bounce every so often at a very young age. Also you don't have to bounce you ac just hold it and touch it to the ground

Port Adelaide is my team. Any game with port Adelaide vs Richmond games are always great battles, even though Richmond has been the most successful team since 2017 up till 2021 , having won the trophy in 2017 , 2019 and 2020 , they are the team that has dominated AFL in recent years. But every game between port Adelaide and Richmond are always great battles and so intense that you should really have a look at. Especially in 2020 and the game they played just a couple of weeks ago. 👍

@@AverageSportsFan . Imagine a player kicking for goal after the siren has gone. (If a player takes a mark or gets a free kick before the siren sounds, he’s allowed to take his kick after the siren.) Imagine it’s a grand final, and if he kicks the goal his team wins the premiership, but he misses, and only kicks a point and his side loses. This has happened, so imagine doing that in front of 100,000 people.
There are certain games throughout the home and away season, such as the ANZAC Day match and some of the historically grudge teams, that they will be over 80,000 fans at the match

You have to watch Buddy Franklin get his 1000th goal. Only happened a couple of months ago. One of the best moments ever in any sport. Same guy that took that one handed mark that you reacted to late in this video.
yes catching the ball is a "Mark" BUT a player catching the ball, jumping on the back of a anther play is as well a mark but also a "Specky" (A spectacular mark)

Also. Most players can hit a pass 60 yards or more. I haven't played footy since I was 14, I can still kick 50 yards (45m) with good accuracy
You should find a bar near you where expat Australians hung out find Australians who know AFL to help you with the finner details of the rules.
That only tackling between shoulder and knees saves so much damage injuries, from tackles in afl are a lot rarer then one would think
if you want to watch a good game look up the schedule and catch a game like richmond vs geelong or port vs richmond, some games are a snore but if youre keeen look up Port Adelaide vs Richmond that played two weeks ago, two great teams, very close game and very loud crowd.

They need to rephrase "bouncing every 16 yards." You can't run more than 16 yards without bouncing the ball. You can bounce it at any distance under the 16 yards. Given the shape of the ball, a bounce can go wrong though. If you do run more than 16 yards, the umpire blows his whistle and you forfeit possession. Most players don't manage more than three bounces before kicking the ball or handballing - an opponent is usually coming at them by then And yes, the 16 yards is a bit of a "guesstimate " on the part of the umpire, but they are good at it. The crowd also lets out a mighty howl if they think an opposition player has exceeded the 16 yards!

There have been lots of great player but unlike NFL and Soccer AFL really needs the whole team if they are not pulling together, you can kiss that fame goodbye no matter how great a player you have on .

The field is big because it's actually a cricket pitch. The game was invented to help cricket players maintain their fitness during the off season (winter).
In regards to bouncing the ball, which isn't explained quite as well as it could be in the vid, the rule is a player cannot run further than 15 metres (about 16 yards) without having touched the ball to the ground. The most effective way to do that is obviously to bounce it. The umpire judges it by eye. If the player runs too far the crowd also starts to react. In reality, players usually bounce the ball every few strides, just to make sure, so giving away a free kick is rare.
A good vid to watch of the game play is the highlights of the 2017 grand final. It was a bit of a blow out, but the crowd goes off. It's a good video to get a sense of the atmosphere. The 2019 grand final was a great game, too, as the end was a genuine nail biter.

There is also no send off or sin bin rule, you can be reported but you can stay on the field and finish the game.
Another fun fact about the AFL Grand Final is the highest attendance for that game is 121,696. It's roughly 20,000 more than the highest attendance for the Super Bowl

And find a way to get yourself to a grand final mate, been to one and it’s an experience like no other!
In regards to bouncing the ball, its just a rough estimate, usually the umpire will just get a 'feel' for a player running too far without bouncing it, its quite obvious to spectators too. Might only happen once a game, if that. Plus an added extra you dont 'have' to bounce it once every 15meters, you can litrelly bounce it 3 times if you wanted to within that 15 meters.
Oh alright that makes sense. I really think its a cool rule. Adds a whole other skill to the game
I’m a massive Brisbane Lions supporter… Pretty much the entire team is on fire right now in terms of skill, accuracy and possessions.
My friend there are so many games of AFL that are great. Try the 1989 Grand Final played by Hawthorn and Geelong. It is possibly one of the best ever played!

Forgot to mention .....The bounce every 16 yards means that you can't run without bouncing it once within 15 metres which is 16 yards .. It;s a bit like a travel in basketball rule.. It's not measured officially but the umpires judge on how many paces the player takes ..They rarely get it wrong ..Also on 15 metres ..That's the minimum distance a kick can cover and been caught (mark) to be legal . If it's deemed too short the umpire calls play on and the player can still be tackled ..The vid doesn't cover the in possession rule and a few other key rules but the best way to learn them is to watch an actual game live or even a highlights package that the AFL posts on every single game every week .. Most of them go for about 6-7 minutes .. You'll soon pick up on the little things . There is also two other Americans that feature in the game . Dani Marshall from Arizona is the first woman to be drafted in the AFLW which is the professional womens league that's been now running for several years .. The other one is from my club , the Richmond Tigers . Her name is Peggy O'Neal from West Virginia who is the first woman to hold the post of President to any VFL/AFL club in history .. She is a wonderful lady and there are video's abbout her on You Tube too ..Cheers again ...

Other than bouncing the ball on the run..a player can lean down and touch the ball to the ground as he is running. Mostly when the ground is wet slippery etc.

*at least* every 15 metres, or more like 15 strides. You can bounce as soon as you get it theoretically. Look for a club near you, probably is one if it's a big city.
Best players to watch are lance franklin, dusty Martin and Gary ablett jr, best teams are sydney swans, Richmond tigers and Geelong cats

I'm not a Richmond fan at all but ya can't deny that Dustin Martin is an absolute king on the field. Worth checking out his highlights. Ben Cousins was good too in his day, before he fell down the drug hole.
