I’ve never really understood how to use oil pastels, so I stayed away from that medium. It was really interesting watching you work with them and I’m curious about what type of pencils you used with them. I actually felt the opposite of how you did, where I was more comfortable sharing artwork with friends and family, but hesitant to share with the public. You’re doing great, try not to worry about what others think. You are happy with what you do and that is what matters. :)

It's so fascinating how quickly my brain wants to tell you there is no need to be so insecure while I don't even have that confidence in myself. But it's also inspirational in that sense, it's okay for me to take my art seriously.

I totally understand where you coming from, I always wanted to become an artist but as I grew up, people started asking me if I was sure that is what I wanted to do-will that be enough, etc. so I ended up getting a engineering degree but now I’m slowly started to let go of that fear and accept the artist in me and starter painting again! Thanks for sharing this! 🥰

I definitely understand where you are coming from. I get embarrassed when people ask to see my art because I’m always worried they will be judge mental. I have a whole separate instagram for my art that I haven’t told anyone about because I don’t want the people that I am close to judge what I make, I need to get more confident in myself, I’m glad you shared this video, it helps to know that I’m not the only one who struggles.

You are an artist, plain and simple. I have always felt that artists, by nature, are self employed. As soon as you do something at someone else’s behest, you are illustrating their artistic vision rather than your own, in which case I would refer to that as being an illustrator. Be an artist as long as you can make it work. Though clients can motivate and inspire you to try new things, they can also really take the joy out of creating. It may seem hard to believe now, but there may be a time when RUclips is no more or they may just change the algorithm and kill your income. So diversifying is a very wise decision. Love your channel and have for a long time.

I totally get you! It's pretty hard explaining what I work with, I never know what to call myself, am I an artist, an artisan, a small business owner? But when I think about it I am really proud to say that I work for myself, it's so satisfying to know that I can do this on my own and not have to depend on other people's business to be succesfull you know? Makes me happy

When I was younger, my mom was very supportive of my art and always loved to talk to people about how artistic her daughter was. But the older I got the more my mom seemed to be… embarrassed/impatient with how passionate I was about art. I ended up hearing a lot of “ok but what are you ACTUALLY going to do with your life?” And I feel like that really affected the confidence I have in myself and my art. I’ve only recently been able to get over it and move on with my art journey

Not really the same scale, but when i was a teen around 2012 i made an animated video for a justin bieber song lmao, i was really proud of making it but boy did i not want anyone to see it haha. I gave it a really complicated name so noone could find it and luckily noone did. I'm still pretty proud of it considering it was made with paint and moviemaker but i totally understand your desire of keeping such a personal thing as your art safe. I'd hate to hear others criticize the things i make.

When I was in high school and told my family I wanted to be a full time artist they got so disappointed and said things like:" you will starve, artists are poor, you won't have a successful career" (when literally nobody in my family is). They insisted so long for me to stop chasing my dreams that I gave up. I still attended my high school art classes but no longer said "I'm an artist and I want to do it as a career". The only person that always believed on me was my boyfriend, he's super supportive. Still to this day I'm afraid of telling people that I like and do art, and when I do I rush to say:" it's just a hobby". Don't let people break you and your dreams like I did

Honestly, the fact that you are processing all these feelings now at such a young age is endearing to me. I didn't realize until I was almost in my 30s how mean and unsupportive my family and a handful of friends where/are. People outside of my inner circle clued me in but I thought "that's just life. I can't change that." It took a major life event to wake me up to this fact and that I could create a different life, a life I wanted. Having support from family and friends is really everything. You can do almost anything with a good support system.

Imposter syndrome (thinking you aren't good enough to be doing the thing you do) is a real thing that lots of people have. Once you internalize that most people feel the same way, it helps you feel better...though not sure the feelings ever go away completely. (I've been in my profession for 20+ years and still feel it at times)

What you talked about in the video was so good to hear, it's something I needed to hear as as fresh-out-of-school illustrator. And like the good thing is, after school I did find jobs, bigger ones and smaller ones (I'm still so surprised about it haha) but in my mind I'm still "looking for a real job" cause my parents or other adults can't understand the concept of being independent/freelancer. And I'm here applying to 9/5 graphic design studios even if it's not what I studied, just because that would be a "normal" job in the eyes of society... ugh, ok rant over. I told my friends here and there, but the rest of the people I went to high school with I still don’t want them to know about it. I just didn’t want it to affect how I post, I wanted it to be a worry free zone. I do think if I ever got decently big that maybe I would share it more in my personal life because I am proud of it and my art.

this is exactly where I am with my youtube channel! my parents knew right from the start and have always been very supportive about my art and I couldn't be more grateful for that (some other family members know as well). I only recently told one of my friends and she was lovely about it, but none of my other friends know. I feel embarrassed with my channel but I'm also proud because why else would I be uploading? so it's a weird blend. I think it's also because I come from a small country where youtube isn't that big. there are only like two “big” youtubers here and they focus on vlogs and lifestyle content. I don't plan on making this my career, but I think the reason why people question your career is just pure ignorance; not knowing how it works, that it can provide good income, and perhaps some may think it's unstable. either way, I'm proud of how far you've come and I think it's very admirable

"oh, you should try THIS, you'd be good at it!" etc. I'm sure they don't mean it in a bad way, but I'm never confident enough to say, "No, I'm actually doing what I really love, and I hope it can become a full-time gig at some point!"
I have a long way to go with my channel, and just art in general. But I'm able to do what I love, and I'm happy with that! :D

You actually are one of my inspirations and its interesting to hear the way you try to explain that you are an Artist. I think its just the way you phrase it which will tell them that you’re an artist that will help sell that your confident, know what you’re doing, and that you are earning a living from it. Its a bit hard to phrase it via typing since you can’t hear how I would phrase it. Normally my “elevator pitch” to answer that question is confidently saying something like: “I AM an Illustrator and Animator who normally takes Commissioned Work and do My Own Projects.” Then if they have any further questions continue with the same confident tone to answer them and get a bit technical and personal with them after that. Sadly I fib since I rarely get commissioned work, but other people who don’t know me need to know that. I will still fake it until I make it come true. As you really never know who might hire you for their next project and the way you project yourself might be the selling point between getting hired or not. But this also comes from a person who has always wanted to be an artist and grew up in a family who although financially supported me, has never really believed that I will ever really make it.

This video is so relatable 🥲 I graduated two years ago, I don't have the following you do but I'm trying to still make this my career because every time I work in retail I get really depressed and physically in pain. My least favourite question to get since graduating is when people ask me what I'm doing, what job I have etc. I can NEVER explain myself and even when I try and they ask MORE questions and I can't deal with it. It makes me so anxious and depressed and feel like I'm being judged. I've also always struggled with being consistent on my RUclips channel out of embarrassment. I hope someday I can reach the place you are at 🥲I've been following you for some time and you are one of my favourite artists online, I'm so happy things have worked out for you and I'm sure you'll continue to grow and pave the way for the rest of us! 💖

Like in high school I would make sure to have my personal insta logged in instead of my art account, and I would only check my art account if I was in the restroom or something. Not wanting people you know to know, but wanting a bunch of strangers to watch your videos is so relatable 😂 most of my friends know I make RUclips videos, but I kind of hide all things RUclips from my family. Especially making voice-overs…I am so freaked out my family is gonna hear me recording and make fun, so I’ll turn the TV on downstairs so they can’t hear me. I’m a whole adult, but it still makes me nervous 😂 I also haven’t promoted my channel on my personal accounts either. Correct me if I’m wrong, but basically it sounds like the main fear you have currently is people thinking that what you do is not a real job. My advice here would be to focus on overcoming that fear. I’m not sure exactly how you should go about it, as everyone’s journeys are different, but I’m thinking that you would probably need to isolate that into two categories:
    - To not be held captive by the opinions of others
    - Accepting *who you are* and what you do and the progress you are making.
You could possibly go about this by journaling, praying (I know not everyone does, but it sure works for me), thinking, or however else you may process things.
As always, thanks for sharing your journey and I hope you get some really awesome breakthrough with this.

May be sometimes we need to shift focus from 'me' to other. like not all people know abt art field so when they ask if u work for design firm that's generally what they know so they just ask .but you don't have to feel insecure about it necessarily when you just tell them confidently that you are freelancer and have an online shop and youtube and they will ask about it more.
Think from their point of view so u will understand why they ask it and will not have chance to think abt your insecurity 😅this happens to me too.
And i realized most of the time people just ask what u do nd all to keep on the conversation it's not necessarily that they care so we don't have to think that much abt what they think bcoz they ask nd they forget too (as ofc they have their life and problems so )

First part of the video is so true to my life.. i've been sharing my art with another people on the internet for about a year already and only now two of my friends, who are also my classmates, discovered my blog. And they told me something like "oh I found a strange blog yesterday and you know what, there was your art there!". I was like "oh.. okay" but inside i wanted to scream and cry because finding my blog is literally the worst thing my classmates can do.. and i actually don't know why. I've never been laughed at and probably if someone found my art in social media they wouldn't care, but still I'm really afraid of it. Hah, some days ago my classmate was just like "hey guys, I've made a ticktock account and I've already got 1500 subscribers!!" and everyone was like "wow cool". I thought "how can you talk about it so freely..". Still don't understand:D

Great artwork as always :)! Also, thanks for sharing your story. I could relate to a lot of those situations and insecurities as an artist. It's so difficult when others don't understand that art can be a job. To me having a 9-5 (which I've had for a while) is living an unhappy zombi like life and living for the weekend. A lot of people I worked with felt like that and took every moment they could to leave early and motivated each other that it's almost a weekend. This is no life, specially for artists. I don't care how much a person gets paid by the end of the day, if they're measurable for life. Anyways, keep growing as an artist and good luck with your business! You are so talented I know you'll make it! :)

I think the way people ask that question, like, “Is that what you’re doing now, do you want to work at a firm?” I think that comes from the way people typically look at work, culturally. Most people work -for- somebody. They’ve got a boss and an office they go to, so being self-employed in a way that isn’t typical for things outside of a creative field, that just doesn’t occur to them at first thought and it might take some explaining to give them perspective on the whole thing.

I always enjoy how personable your videos are, but this one especially. Imposter syndrome is something Im very familiar with ;-; it's so weird how your mind will trick you into negative thought processes or presumptions. And now having to fight the stigmas of not only being a self employed artist, but a content creator as well :O I can totally empathize with you. At the risk of sounding mushy or cliche, I'm so glad you decided to pursue this and continue to put in so much work to grow it. It's been so cool to follow you along on this art journey.
I wonder if it was weird at first to have so many strangers around the world who love and support your content?? Especially while really feeling that imposter syndrome?
Also, the foxes came out great! It was fun to see how you would incorporate a new a supply into your usual work ^-^
Excuse my novel, this video really spoke to me :b keep up the great work Jel

I'll just say it. As someone in there mid 20s, seeing someone confident enough to put their art and videos of their art on youtube is incredible. I may be ageing myself but I never felt confident enough to put myself on social media. Period. I was so unconfident that I was ashamed to displayed my work at all. It took me till my mid 20s to be displayed in a non-juried art shows. I've limited myself so much that now I realize I have to play catch up.
I found it really funny, when you mention people didn't understand your career path and asked if you were a graphic designer. That is so foreign to my experience!
I have family and family friends who do not understand what that even is and think it's a made up job that I chose instead of saying I'm an artist.
I'm self taught and did certifications to become a self-employed/employed entry level graphic designer. It literally took 3 years for them to identify that the certifications and job was real.
So It is my humble opinion the route you took really took a lot of personal confidence in your own ability; more so than you could have probably have realized at the time.

I have similar fears for putting my art out there, but I don't think I'll ever get to the point of it being a job. I think I could handle other people looking at my art irl as long as I don't deem it bad enough to be embarrassing lol, but no way will I be able to handle that with voiceover! On a sidenote the fox(es) are so cute and vibrant

Id start with, "I'm very fortunate, I've been able to develop and ptomote my art online. Being self employed as an artist has been such a creative adventue, I honestly don't think I could work for someone else after depending on my own business skills for so long... " Id practice some stock phrases like that to politely make it clear from the start that you're doing very well and you're delighted with the situation. I can understand why you feel so uncomfortable though, it would make me feel really awkard too!

I was nodding my head throughout this whole video! I felt like this when I was making music years ago. Confidence and security in your art definitely comes with age. 😊
I think our current 'rat race' culture means a lot of people have a hard time equating 'job' with something creative and enjoyable, or that the creative enjoyable thing also pays bils, which is a shame.

I do do client work and even though saying I'm a freelance illustrator is a much simpler response than trying to explain the content creation thing it's STILL extremely frustrating talking to non artists about my job. A lot of the times I just get a patronizing "oh!.... wow!" with no follow up, though I want to believe they aren't intentionally patronizing it's just that the average person is so far removed from the world of professional creativity that they really have no starting point for a conversation ar any understanding at all. This can be kind of lonely with my partners family (who are almost all doctors) because I rarely get to talk about my work. Of course, not everything is about work, but my career aspirations are the main thing in my life and it does sting to not be acknowledged or taken seriously. Since they almost never ask, I assume they think I'm just sitting around doodling all day and not working, or essentially being a housewife. Then the family members who only know my art based on like my Instagram and haven't seen me in a while always manage to bring it up in away that sounds dismissive even if it's not intended. The worst was at the beginning when I was first looking for clients because even though I KNEW it was possible to make a living as a freelance illustrator and it would just take some time to get there, but I didn't have anything to show for it yet. Now that it's been a few years, I have the satisfaction of name dropping clients and mentioning my literary agent, and that helps a little ;)

Hm, oil pastel tip: use a brush and some odorless turpentine and 'oil paint' with it like water on colored pencils.
You were just shy with RUclips, I still am too and I'm 39.
As far as sharing your job with others, most people work for someone else and not for themself but I know plenty of artists who only make 1 art piece, sell it on ebay for $5,000-$6,000/month and that's more than I make & they get to do what they love so who cares if no one else understands. I'm glad you can live off of it, don't stop unless you want to.

ah I honestly wish we could do away with it being the standard to ask people "so what do you DO?" like i know it's just an ice breaker and networking type thing but i always feel pressured on how I respond, especially as a creative. I feel like I have to say something that's so profound and amazing otherwise people will just think i'm not really doing anything that matters, and I know self-worth doesn't rely on what other people think of you, but I'd just appreciate it if that one response didn't sum up how people look at you >.< there's more important things in life than how people try to accumulate money to live

I know these feelings all too well and dont think I'll ever get over them... Before I got the bigest artist block of my life (still ongoing) I started making top-down recordings of my drawings with the intention of uploading them to youtube and theyre still sitting in a folder... I hate my art, Im embarrased of it, embarrased of my voice so i will never VO, embarrased of my appearance so I will definitely never go on camera for fear of trolls and bullies, embarrased for people to see my hand drawing because my fingers are stumpy and I bite my nails, I have zero confidence and I know there are so many miliions of artists out there better than me so why would anyone bother clicking on my videos, especially as I barely get ny likes or comments on photos of my work. I would love to make money of youtube but I know I'm a failure so I hold myself back. Im scared that people will insult me and my work and drop my confidence even more :/
Your work is so beautiful so I'm glad you overcame your fears

honestly feel that, I want to grow my instagram art and youtube online but only to strangers hahah, I feel VERY embarrassed when someone irl follows me on my art account and I'm always scared they'll be seeing the posts, I even block most of irl people from my stories out ot embarrassment, hopefully I'll overcome that one day. Also I do horror and weird art content that tends to freak out some people, I wish I didn't care about what they think tho

  • @YellowMelle

Wait, why not just say you're an artist? I'm surprised they don't just assume you sell the art. Most people have some romantic idea of what an artist is, let them have it lol. I quit my day job in 2019 thinking I would find another, but then 2020 happened. So now, I make a tiny pittance doing gig work part time, and then do art part time, and I'm terrified that ppl judge me behind the scenes, but everyone's been nicer than I feel I deserve, honestly. They all just assume I'm selling art successfully and never pry, when the truth is, I make almost no money at all thru art😅

i think as a possibility, if you felt this was a good explaination/suggestion, you could say that you are a self employed artist and that you have your own business. you have a online store and then if they want to know more they can ask more. (todays the day i learned i cant spell explaination -_-) your art is really good. i also think that You tube as a way to make income is kind of a new thing, and that there are people that don't know that its possible to make a income off you tube. i look forward to your videos, the topic is always interesting. : )
p.s. what is the yellow thing you use at the end (the big chunky one)? is that a crayon of some kind ? if so what brand? I love this channel. i always learn about new art supplies like col erase pencils.

What you can tell people when they ask is, "I'm an entrepreneur and an artist. I make money from different streams, avenues. And if you don't wanna answer a question just say, "I'm not comfortable answering that" or change the subject by asking them a question instead. Lol

I don't do what you do but I think you can sum it up as "I use my art skills and work very hard to generate multiple streams of income." And if anyone says art isn't work, tell them to go a month without music, no movies, no tv shows, no books, take down all their home decor, no podcasts, no make up, no jewelry. Dare them to go completely utilitarian and see how long they can last.

For some reason, I'm always worried an estranged acquaintence will find my channel and then call me out publicly for daring to think anyone could care about my stuff, for being a conceited narcissist or something, I dont know. That's the thing about irrational fears, it's irrational!
