You bring up a good point ive been trying to make for several years. When i train muay thai, the basic kick is actually 3 distinct steps. There is no arguing that a proper muay thai kick is very powerful, but it telegraphs itself way too much in a real combat scenario. Granted, you can always get faster and it becomes faster, and less telegraphed, but even at higher levels, the basic moves can still be a sign. Ive gone to more of a hybrid style question mark kick that bas rutten uses.

Hung Ga guy looked a lot better than I thought and that's excellent to see. He is in fact very good and looked comfortable in close quarters, blocking and dodging a lot of stuff while countering we himself. Hung Ga is one of my favorite Kung Fu forms and it ironically took Tony Jaa, who is a Muay Boran master himself, to put me on to it. I'm not sure how much of a fan of martial arts movies you are but if you haven't seen Ong Bak 2, I highly recommend it for those who love Hung Ga Kung Fu. Tony Jaa did so well in this, it made me think no one else should play Reptile in Mortal Kombat live action than him.

This is very much modern wingchun (a mixed bag of different things). The older versions had non-telegraphing of movements (and very particularly, non-telegraphing of footwork) as *the* essential element. Almost the entire specificity of the style among other Southern Wushu schools was down to exactly this. Not to mention that this is not short-bridge punching at all and the force is not generated the way it's supposed to. This is modern "sports" "wingchun" (aka slightly awkward kickboxing)

@@robmen1402 agree mostly, but it's also how they get trained by their instructors. majority of the chinese martial arts instructors have never fought nor sparred, and so, the lack of practicality spread far and wide. I trained predominantly in chinese martial arts and taijiquan before self-teaching myself JKD. i'm not a pro and i stopped training mostly, but when I was active, I sparred quite abit, got into street fights and was able to handle street situations plus most sparring situations. it's really the instructors who are bad and not teaching the right way to train. it's sad.

@@NexGenRepublicthe ruleset forces things to look more like sanshou cuz those techniques score best in that ruleset. With even those 10oz gloves on, you lose hand speed and most ability to grab wrists and hands. So clinching will become more basic. They might not train that much for the competition rules, which leads them to look worse/less experienced than their gym style.
When I first competed sanshou, I had simulated the leitai in the boxing gym using the ropes, but the actual size of the leitai changed ring out strategy completely, and my timing and distance on push out attempts were way off. No to mention the mat was way softer than anything I’d been on
