I have osteoporosis of the spine and osteopenia of the hips diagnosed 3 years ago. I refused fosamax, took vitamin D and vitamin K2-MK 7, walk daily if weather permits, ate a healthier diet such as plain yogurt, dairy. Calcium supplements made me constipated....ugh. My dexa scan this month shows no changes in the spine so at least I'm stable, and both hips had a minor improvement which is likely from my walking program. I'm also post complete hysterectomy with ovary removal due to endometrial cancer 10 years ago. Age 67 now so will keep up with my program and add in weight training, and confer with a physical therapist to find out the best way to go about weight training. Also, just diagnosed with breast cancer so really working at being as healthy and fit as possible before surgery. Thanks for the info....I really appreciate this channel.
Congrats! I have same thing. Finally agreed to Reclast treatment, but still continuing program similar to yours. No calcium supplements due to having had hyper-parathyroidism. See what my next DEXA shows.
I just have to share how happy I am today- 2 years ago I had my first dexa scan showing osteoporosis in hip but more spine at - 2.7. I just had another scan and I was really scared it would be worse after 2 years. All my doctors are trying to shame me into the drugs but I won't take them. My results are now -2.4 in spine so now officially osteopenic bot osteoporotic. I know there can be variability with the scans but at least the trend is not downward. I haven't really done much except forcing myself to get enough protein, calcium through diet, magnesium, started K2, Vit D and doing some exercise. I can't tell you anymore so no point in asking. I dont know how it got better but I'm just relieved 😊
My first dexa showed osteopenia of the spine, and my second showed a normal spine. My doctor at the Osteoporosis center said if the position you are in is the slightest bit out or a different machine is used, that can affect the results, that's why dexas are not the best, It doesn't differentiate between different kinds of bones, cortical or trabecular. The best is a scan called EOS scan which is used in a limited area within the UK and is expensive.
If there is anything I learned from this channel is there is no silver bullet in preventing osteoporosis. It is living a healthy lifestyle, good diet with lots of protein, suppliment vitamin d,K. Weight training, high impact exericses. Not over training with cardio cause it depetes the bones. And it's never too early to prevent bone loss.
Thank you, Dr. Doug. God bless you; I am 20 a 20-year-old student in college. From the past 7 years, I was feeling pain in my spine and hip joint: On August 3, 2023, I had my MRI, which revealed osteoporosis, and did a Dexa scan, which showed -2.6 T & Z score in the spine and -2.1T & Z score in the Hip. My endocrinologist just prescribed vitamin D and local sachet, Anti Drug Bisphosphonate, but after watching your videos, I have gained knowledge, and today, 1 June 2024, I did my Dexa Scan, which revealed bone density increased by 27% in the spine and 25% in the hip in just 9 months and 14 days. I followed a complete road map like supplements, exercise, etc.
CTX and P1NP tests need to be conducted before any medication is issued. My endocrinologist didn't do this and warranted medication, he was out the door when I found one that would issue the test. How medication is warranted without a starting point is beyond me.
Dr. Lucas - what I’m not sure of is this: does the Calcium and Vitamin D have to be taken together at the same time? Meaning twice a day for me. Thank you so much for all your support!
Great question! Checkout our health span nation if you have not yet, you get exclusive access to me and a community of people pursuing health and longevity. These are things that we discuss in there and it allows us to go into detail rather than doing short chats through this platform. You can find more information here --> www.drdouglucas.com/healthspan
You are correct saskhiker: Try your best to live a healthy lifestyle and then..... Do your research people and talk to your urologist and nephrologists if you have/have had lots and lots of kidney stones as I …….. “HAP (hydroxyapatite) crystallites on the surface of renal epithelial cells are nests that can induce the formation of Randall plaques and even kidney stones.” And let’s face it - we are guinea pigs - the “practice” of medicine is always ongoing. Even Dr. Doug has recommended supplements or the amount of supplements and then changes what and how much to take! Has Dr. Doug helped - indeed he has, but be you own advocate and research, research, research any given subject and just do your very best to offset osteoporosis, kidney stones/disease or whatever you have going on, and then try to do your best (along with your physicians), so you can regulate multiple medical issues.

I was recently in the past 2 years, diagnosed with osteoporosis and just visited the osteoporosis clinic. I have been taking calcium and vitamin D since this diagnosis. The doctor told me to come off the calcium as my diet consumed enough, the calcium in my urine was high because of the supplements. I feel the supplements are not necessary for this reason and would not have known this had I not done a 24-hour urine test, which I had to request. Not enough water samples are taken in the medical field which obviously doesn't show up in blood tests. People on trial should not be taking any of their own supplements, as this doesn't make them good subjects
The importance of vitamin K is conspicuously missing from this conversation, especially as related to cardiac arteries. Also absent from both the study and the video is the importance of strength training for bone health. If some women walked or ran and did some form of resistance training, that would have affected the outcome. Perhaps do a video about that?
And you need vitamine A. A good intervention study would use a set of 4-5 supplements in two different reasonable high doses. But that would mean like 20-30 arms. Nobody will do it.
Thank you so much for your videos. Does your program include which supplements I should be taking and where to purchase them? I want to make sure I’m getting exactly what I need.

I so know that it can be overwhelming, but we can only do our best to regulate both. In a 2022 study, The Reciprocal Relationship between Osteoporosis and Renal Stones - CONCLUSION: "The presence of osteoporosis increased the susceptibility to renal stones in the adult population. In addition, the presence of renal stones elevated the vulnerability to osteoporosis. The reciprocal relationship between osteoporosis and renal stones needs to be considered when managing patients with osteoporosis or renal stones." Study all you can. I do hope you can ingest dairy products. I try to take 1000-1200 mg of calcium a day through food - no calcium supplements: milk, cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, and if you cheat with some desserts, I'll make (not premade) puddings made with milk. And know what foods are high in oxalates. And of course, lots and lots of water. And of course protein - I do through dairy and meat (not so much red meats). Along with Dr. Doug (and still be your own advocate and do your own research to determine what is best for you), go to ruclips.net/user/thekidneystonediet and you can get your kidney stones under control - it works! I have congenital anomalies of my kidneys that produce stones. Do I still have 16 stones remaining, yes, but they are stable in size and hopefully my osteoporosis is also stable - don't know just yet. I wish you all my best........

CTX blood test very important. Below 300 is very encouraging. DXA is part of the story but not everything.

If the study didn't take into account personal supplements, what is the point?

It seems that the 1st study was not measuring serum vit d either, so no way to tell anything at all.....

You need to add magnesium and boron.
Unless in case, you have a sensitivity to boron
We need all rare trace minerals and basic magnesium taken as a family - the metal kingdom is a kingdom for a reason ❤

Yes, It definitely helps to listen to these videos multiple times
Were these people also taking potassium k-2?
