Thanks, you answered so many of my questions about probable causes of my osteoporosis journey. In short, I am 74, very active, painfree currently. Had a hip replacement at 64 after a nasty fall while trail running on rocky desert trails. Osteoarthritis was mentioned so I changed my diet to include meat and started using goat milk in coffee and cooking. No alcohol or cigarettes and intermittent fasting for the past 6 years. I wear a fitness watch and complete 10K steps daily. The game changer I believe has been the addition of Strontium, Berberine, Boswellia extract, D3/K2 with my other vitamins. I put powdered Magnesium Glycinate in my morning coffee. I was following a vegetarian lifestyle for a few years before my hip fracture. My recent DECA scan reports normal bone activity with low probability of fracture. Thanks for your advice and input on this very important topic.

Glory B offers some reasonable jump and high-impact exercises that check out with current research. I give her credit for introducing me to that concept and I'm appreciative. I find the rest of her content unsupported in the available literature. We have to be our own advocate, and do our own research, taking the good from various sources, not just one. Thanks for this great video, respectfully presented.

I really don’t believe whether a person eats meat or is vegan is a factor in getting osteoporosis. I personally have osteoporosis and I am vegan. I have not always been vegan but only became vegan when I was diagnosed with possible Lupus and definitely Sjogrens. A plant based healthy diet has helped manage this and I do feel better eating a plant based diet. But as far as osteoporosis, I did not exercise, I am small, 95 lbs., only 4 ft 11 inches, white, light complexion and a family history as my older sister has osteoporosis and she is not vegan. I think it is important to eat healthy and exercise especially weight bearing.

@@margarethawk3073 I largely agree with you. I always try to research the constantly changing and sometimes deceptive "science" across the spectrum, and I also allow for differences in individuals.
I was a vegan for 5 years and felt great the first 2 of that. I gradually started getting negative symptoms and eventually had to eat animal products again. I've been keto-vore for 3 years and feel the best ever. I also have a small frame and found it very difficult as a vegan to get enough protein to build and maintain muscle mass and the energy for rigorous exercise. But that's my journey and I'm thankful I've found what works best for me, just as you seem to have. That's why I steer clear of extreme recommendations for every one. I pick and choose what works.

I'm so glad I found you. I have been following the Save Institute and Dr. Susan Brown, who also is adamant about the alkaline diet. I had just discovered Glory B and was more interested in her exercise than diet. I've been doing keto and don't want to give up most of my meat. Also, I've read as you get older (I'm 67 this month), you need more protein. My older sister was a vegetarian for years and had severe osteoporosis and a fracture in one arm, broke the other arm, and a broke a leg, all due to falls in one year. She never regained the strength in her leg. I have osteoporosis and need to get serious about exercise. I'm thankful I don't have to become mostly vegetarian to help my bones, that would be too much of a change in addition to adding in the exercise. I just downloaded your book and look forward to learning from you.

Stop apologizing or you're going to be mistaken for one of us Canadians! Haha. Your passion for the topic is clearly evident and very much appreciated. You have a clear, concise way of discussing the topics and to be honest, I'd even prefer a bit more length/increased resolution for certain things (an example would be when a clinical term for an I/O condition is used in a synopsis, which might have the effect of excluding all the "grey area"/non-clinical status that most of us live in) in order to help those of us that are seeking to be proactive so as to not degrade into those negative clinical diagnoses, arguably the most frustrating part of self-directed health goals. Thanks again for this great resource you've contributed to the online community.

Your recommendation to listen to people who know a lot about the topic we want to know about is why I am listening to you about bone health. I recently had a follow-up DXA scan because after my breast cancer surgery, I was going to be taking Anastrozole. I was 74 at the first scan before starting the medication. It showed a very healthy bone density. (e.g.: lumbar T-score = -0.5; mineral density = 1.115 g/cm2) Two years later, my DXA showed a decrease in mineral density to 1.040 g/cm2 with a T-score of-1.02. While not terrible, there is more of a loss than I want. It puts me into the osteopenia category. So, while I have not as yet seen your Best Diet recommendations, I have increased my protein intake and resistance training since getting those latest results a couple of months ago. I plan on requesting another DXA next year to see if my efforts are working to overcome the effects of the anastrozole. If not, well, I will cross that bridge when I get to it.
Thanks for this video. I’m confident that the one on the diet you recommend will be just as informative.

I appreciate your perspective but disagree a bit. Well done studies from over 10 years ago should be considered as legitimate. We haven’t changed as a species in that time so a well done study should be fine to consider.

@WomblePuppy -- How long ago a study was conducted is not relevant. What matters is how well the study was designed, how well it was conducted, and how accurately the results were reported. Nowadays, too many so-called studies are nothing but junk science (poorly designed, and with strong ideological and financial biases).

I agree with a few commenters here.. sweet podcaster but…
    She had osteopenia
She pushes Garden of Life vitamin mix that contains strontium. This substance was used in the famous COMB study (the NIH report is interesting ).. Strontium, along with K2, magnesium, D2 etc.. and weight exercise. There was a good result.. HOWEVER, strontium changes Dexa results which was not mentioned so you can’t be sure of the scan results and the reports I could find were all mixed on safety long term of Strontium which I found scary.
Another RUclips channel, Dr Susan Brown,PhD pushes the alkaline diet and (of course) her huge line of vitamins. She is a medical anthropologist and nutritionist.
I am so very grateful to you for clarifying this topic. Too many out there are “experts” and muddy the waters for those of us who want REAL ANSWERS-based on actual science-not twisting the facts to suit the narrative.

Loading the spine can be difficult. Osteostrong uses load through the arms to generate multiples of body weight. Carrying heavy weights can do it but must be done with caution and direction. Marodyne reports improved spine BMD with use as well. The neck is very difficult to load and I’m not aware of any studies looking specifically at this.

Glory B and you both mentioned that a diet of fruits & vegetables would make the body more alkaline. My question is, does alkaline water have the same effect? I inherited an Enagic Luvaluk machine that turns tap water into a more alkaline water to drink (acidic water, usually siphoned-off, can also is used from skin cleansing to sanitizing). I drink 9.5 Alkalized water exclusively for several years now. I was also recently diagnosed with Osteopenia (70 yr. old female. 5'6". 240 lbs.), and I was wondering if the two are related. Also, Glory B mentioned that that acidic lemon juice can be alkalized in the body, so does so-called 'acidic' foods like meats and animal products also become alkalized during the course of digestion into the body? I prefer the Ketovore Diet and am concerned if being Keto or Carnivore would also cause bone-loss...🤔

    • @Dr_DougLucas
      @Dr_DougLucas  8 месяцев назад +2

It’s a confusing topic. Alkaline water is bad for digestion as it neutralized stomach acid. The only response then is more stomach acid production. It’s not healthy. Just drink filtered water.
Meat won’t change your blood pH.
      Basically, ignore the pH fallacy.

I didn't read all the comments so perhaps someone has mentioned this already. At 30:00, you mentioned that the EPIC-Oxford study indicated a higher fracture risk for vegans and vegetarians. If you search pubmed, you will find an abstract that says this increased fracture risk was very likely due to an inadequate calcium intake in the **vegan** diets. "Conclusions: In this population, fracture risk was similar for meat eaters, fish eaters and vegetarians. The higher fracture risk in the vegans appeared to be a consequence of their considerably lower mean calcium intake." Vegans (and all people) should be very careful to check that whatever diet they follow has adeequate nutrition. I wouldn't be surprised if vegans with a higher calcium intake were comparable to meat-eaters wrt fracture risk. It seems like many people will alter their diets without checking to make sure they are not now missing nutrients - something that might come back to bite them later in life. Please track your nutritional info every now and then and see if you need a supplement. I'm sick and tired of the refrain that supplements are a waste. Clearly plenty of people need them.

That's possibly true but we don't know that for sure. I doubt it's just calcium related as osteoporosis is not a calcium deficiency for most people. It's likely a combination of deficiencies.

Thank you for the discussion. I am a 72 year old woman who has been working on reversing mine for 5 years. Next thing I am going to add to my healthy lifestyle is hormone therapy.
