- In this first part of a special TAB episode examining the history of the ArmaLite AR-10 Vic discusses the early origins, history and development of the now legendary 7.62x51mm rifle.
At the heart of this episode is a remastered version (certainly the best currently available online) of the c.1958 ArmaLite/Fairchild promotional film that features Eugene Stoner and shows many of the early 'Hollywood' ArmaLites in action!
The first part of this special documentary concludes with Vic examining a Hollywood-made AR-10B (the last iteration of the US-made AR-10s).
In part two of the episode includes an overview of almost every Artillerie Inrichtingen (A.I.)-made model of AR-10 including the Sudanese, Cuban and Portuguese models!

That promotional video is simply amazing! I never thought there would be a quality copy available to view. Thank you very much for making that possible!
Thank you Sir, for spending the time and effort to collect all these artifacts of history and presenting them in a very enjoyable fashion.
Glad you enjoyed it
When I was younger, I was fortunate enough to see a dealer sample, Dutch manufactured AR-10 purchased from Armex International. I wish I would have payed more attention to it then. I still have their catalog where the price for a dealer sample was $450 to $500 dollars. I never knew about the selector switch position of the earlier model and only 56 rifles were built by Armalite in the US. Excellent information and I love your back ground and story behind the story. Great information and much appreciated.
This AR-10 promotional video is of a much higher resolution. Thank you for the upload!
A criminally under-viewed video! Excited to get my own AR-10 some day soon. :) Keep up the excellent work!
As a fan and owner of one of the Dutch AR-10s, this vid is right up my alley!
That was fantastic. Thank you so much for putting that together.
That original promotional video is simply gold! Wow!
So glad you had the spinning TAB logo. Don't know what the fuck I would do without it!
Thanks for watching.
Was that Dr. Stoner storming the beach at 9:30? I'm pretty sure it was!!
It sure is!
Great video . Could it be that a young Jim Sullivan is briefly shown in it ?
Retro video. Super👍🙂
When are you going to do the Steyr ACR? I consider it to be one of the more interesting entries in the entire program and i think if they used regular bullets instead of flechettes, it could have gotten somewhere.
It's coming!
Sound on this video seems odd throughout - and out of synchronisation until after the promotional video. Is it just me? Thanks.
John Usher It's an overdub John, Vic used some footage as a background for his early history intro! So it's not just you! - Matt
OK, OK, it's my fault.... I won't do it that way again :-)
Vic
9:39 Eugene Stoner storming the beach with his baby
Iconic
I believe that the gentleman who you could not identify in the promotional video is AR-10 co-designer Jim Sullivan. Check out this interview with him on Forgotten Weapons channel :

"No tools required for disassembly"?? HAA! I see lots of tools being used : ) Now in Komifornia, even a bullet is a tool now. I think Brown is the biggest tool of all. Great watch!
Sudanese 7.62x39 ar10 next?
Does the Finnish army trials AR-10 still exist anywhere?
The man you can't identify is Eugene Stoner who invented the AR10.
He was the chief designer and chief engineer for Armalite.
Nope 7:49 mark of the video he shows him and names him.
ArmaLite still makes the AR10 and is fantastic !! Expensive ! But Fantastic !! Finally the AR10 is being adopted and used in limited numbers the US Military after all these years.. As this Video explains, there were many reasons the AR15 was adopted over the AR10. In my 14 years of Military experience , I would say the biggest reason was killing power and weight. The AR10 has way more killing power and weighs more , both ammo and weapon. The ideology adopted by the US Military was that a dead enemy soldier takes one from the battle. A wounded soldier takes 2 or more from combat as he will need attention, medical ect. That was the theory anyway which is why the AR15 was adopted and not the AR10. Also the AR15 was lighter as was the ammo so more could be carried. Very accurate tack driver same as the AR10 . The AR15 would cause a lot of damage and injured party would need attention for sure. A rather cruel approach, but this was the approach. At closer range, house to house, the M4 5.56 is also used. Super high velocity at close range causes these little 22cal projectiles to explode when they touch anything and really do a job on what ever they hit. Hot lead for sure !! Anyway. For longer range kills, the 7.62 is the better round and still performs well in close combat for sure. House to House.
Amazing Rifle Eugene Stoner Was Way Ahead of His Time 😊😇😀
the AR 10 was 7.62. Mommy I need
Superior to the M14 by leaps and bounds
Did Arman Lite invented it? A Filipino.
bruh HAHAHA Am Filipino but no, a Filipino did not design the AR15 system
sound is out of sync with the video ...
bavariasuhl No it's fine! The video at the beginning is just a placeholder while Vic's voiceover gives some background before looking at the promotional film and the final segment, where he looks at an example of a Hollywood AR-10. Thanks for the feedback! - Matt
Like watching an old kung fu movie.... poor dubbing ruined what is probably a great video.
Hurlburt FamCamp we can only do the best we can with what we have - only the first segment is dubbed. Next part will be a succession of live filmed segments looking at various models. Thanks for the feedback. - Matt
Looking at the video now I understand peoples frustration at the intro dubbing. It reminds me of the old martial arts series 'Monkey' from the early 80's!
Vic
Semi and Auto are in the wrong position ...
They were originally. Field trials showed dragging the rifle while crawling could move the switch to a fire position, so they were changed.
