  • Got the carb swap 349 fired with the help of my son Saturday morning, fired off fine after adjusting for the correct distributor trigger type on the Petronix ignition box and twisting the distributor a few degrees!
made some initial idle mixture adjustments but oticed the fans were not coming on so shut it off to avoid overheating, turn out I forgot to rewire the key on ignition wire on the fan controller after removing all the efi harness and ecu! That was an easy fix
2 issues - fuel pressure is bouncing and need to figure out how to make the factory tach work with the Pertronix ignition box then we can continue tuning and breaking in the new engine and clutch!

Sounds good, tight lash makes it sound like a hydraulic motor.

you can try running the feed line into a gas can and see how the pump is free flowing to see if it still pulsates.. when i broke my motor in on the stand i had a holley regulator that let fuel pressure creep up on me.. had to run 3 psi just not to flood motor during brake in.. ended up using a aeromotive reg. and made sure my return line was as big as my feed line.. glad you got it back running ! check the ground on your gas tank bad ground will mess up the fuel gauge..

thanks! i will check that ground on the sender!, i got the fuel pressure fixed, feed and return were backwards! i labeled the lines wrong where they cross over back by the fuel filter and go over the axle lost track of which was which i guess!

That is cool that your son is helping you with the adjustments and troubleshooting! Will you be in a good position to do a test drive once you get the fuel pressure issue figured out and the AFR's straight?

I'm hoping so, got to get the clutch broken in some and the tach working, should be pretty close after that!

I had a similar issue and it was due to the pressure coming to the regulator was to high so I ran a return but it looks like you have a return

Thanks, I figured it out, I got the send and return lines under the car mixed up! How are the solid rollers working out for you? So far I'm liking mine, got them set at .004 on intake and .006 on exhaust.

@@vrm86gt love solids I will never go the other way again. That’s exactly how we set ours up ya you may need to adjust and check every once in a while but definitely the best way to go.

Change pumps. I run as low as 4psi. The TBI pump would work.

After close to 100 or so square body builds and the majority being carbureted the simplest, in my opinion, choice has been the in tank TBI fuel pump. It lives a long time and doesn't hurt the wallet. The Walbro unit works great. I use return style regulators from Holley or Aeromotive at 5psi or higher. Below that pressure I use a pump dedicated for low pressure use and run it dead-head.
The high output of an EFI pump is hard to return down to a pressure that low. The size of the return line would need to be larger than the feed line. At normal operation, 60% of the pumps output is already being returned and at nearly 90% of the return line's capability. There may be a regulator out there that can return down to that pressure, but it wouldn't be my first choice.

What fuel pump is in the tank?

kenso 340lph - I got the issue sorted! had the feed and return lies crossed on the regulator, that was the clicking sound was the fuel pushing up on the regulator spring and it snapping back, just glad it didn't rupture the diaphragm, regulator working properly now!
