I can see why you like playing this song. It's a wonderfully subtle groove with amazingly complex parts that sound very simple......to us non drummers.
Lovely video Chris. I'm a massive fan of Jeff's and by chance, I was working with Mark at British Grove last week on his Sky Arts series that he does with Brian Johnson. I mentioned Jeff working on the album and Mark (and Guy Fletcher, who was there noodling on a Mark project) just softened. They absolutely loved Jeff. Everyone did. You did an awesome job on that tour by the way. Saw you twice!
Chris, this is amazing! I was a 15 year old outcast at school in the early 90s by being into Dire Straits (all my friends were into indie bands like the Happy Mondays) When the On Every Street tour was announced I couldn't believe it. My best mates Mam took me and him on a 5 hour coach trip from Cumbria to Birmingham NEC to watch you guys. My first gig and still the best! The start of the show with the percussion and the big reveal for Calling Elvis blew my mind. Its giving me goosebumps thinking about it now! God bless you Sir!
I'm a bass player but have always been into drums and probably know more about famous drummers than most drummers out there. When I was a teenager in South Africa I saw Chris on the telly playing for McCartney and I said to my drummer mate that this guy is one of the "tops". When "On the night" came out I was ecstatic to see Chris again. This same drummer friend and I were absolutely obsessed with Chris' drum sound on that tour. We would watch/listen to the drum break in Calling Elvis over and over again. We literally wore out the VHS tape. We had never heard of Noble & Cooley drums but it became part of our "gear vocab" thanks to Chris! So glad you have started this channel Chris. I actually feel quite honoured that you might even read this. You had a positive influence on two young and passionate music fans and I want you to know that your talent is very much appreciated and admired!!
Love the concert in Wellington, New Zealand for OES tour. My favourite album. Brothers in Arms I have also a joy of an album but On Every Street is my favourite. Got the program still too! I was 19 in 1992. Nearly 50 now and play drums still since age 10.
Chris, such a great drummer, with DIRE STRAITS or Paul McCARTNEY... I really appreciate you covering songs applying your personnal touch. Keep on grooving ! Greatings from France !! Fred
The drums from On the Night represent a huge inspiration not just for me but for an entire community of drummers. Thank you, Chris and please share more videos with you🥁❤
Beautiful Chis, such tasty playing as always. I seen you on the Dire Straits tour in the Point Depot Dublin. It was a 3 hour drive from the west coast to the east to see the gig but man was it worth it, I was a young drummer back then starting out and trying to make waves and this gig came just at the right time for me, it was a drumming master class and completely changed my attitude and approach to play drums, the way you played and led the band with feel and grace was a revelation to me, It just all clicked that night and I came away with a very clear idea and vision about what a drummer's job is within a band. As a result it completely changed my playing and approach to the instrument and I've been lucky enough to play tour and record professionally since but it all started that night. For that I am truly grateful so many thanks and all the very best to you sir.
Great groove ❤ you've been one of my favorite drummer since the famous drum intro of Money for Nothing that I desperatly tried to replicate a thousand times😅 Many thx for all the great job done 🤩
One of my favourite drummers. Purely on how the songs are played. I am a pro drummer myself and have always looked up to Chris as a massive influence. Met him once at the Wedgwood Rooms in Southsea.
The on the night live album was my first ever cd, I got it for Christmas back in ‘93 I think. To this day the drumming on the live album is a big inspiration for me. I really enjoy the music to this day, thanks for this performance.
Hello from Russia, thank you very much. Many years I have been watching Daire Straits 1993 live concert. You did a really good job. Such a fantastic sense of time
Cannot be overstated Chris how understated this drumming performance of 'When It Comes To You' is.... so easy to overplay but you felt every slow beat and every slow groove, just marvellous, which in essence really made the song, class act my friend, best regards Richard from OZ.
Hi Chris. I Saw Dire Straits in Lisbon and Faro. The band plays When It Comes To You in Lisbon. Its a great song. For me The best live recording in "On The Night" is "You and Your Friend".
The album On Every Street is one of my all time favorites, I really like how you play in that live show with Dire Straits. The tempo of the song "When It Comes To You" is on a sixteenth note basis but I only realized after watching your video that the drum groove is played in a shuffle tempo..and the affection that is created is fantastic! thanks for the videos you post, they are really interesting. You are one of my favorite drummers, I met you and took inspiration from your way of playing in the live shows where you play both with Paul McCartney and with Dire Straits. Great!
When It comes to you is my favourite song on the album. Your videos, your pics from that tour and your comments in the A Mark in time forum are really appreciated. It would be great that you put all this information in book form. Greetings from Northem Spain
I can’t tell you how excited I was as a young 14 year old drummer to discover your live work with dire straits and Paul McCartney. Really made me sit up and listen. The energy and momentum of your drumming and the fantastic sounding kit led to me wearing out the vhs tapes I had of those concerts. What a big influence you’ve had on so many of us.
Dear Chris … this song is so fantastic … as I heard it the first time i was so 100% clear that it was Jeff‘s playing .. for me one of the greatest Drumtracks ever ! Your playing is fantastic too 👏👏👏thx for sharing this with the Drum Community ! 🙏
Great groove, great sound! I saw you on tour with PMC in Frankfurt in 1989 (one of the most memorable concerts of my life). And I am very happy to see you again after all those years in such a good musical and personal shape. Keep on rockin' and groovin' and best greetings from South West Germany :)!
Hi Chris! I just wanted to let you know that it is truly amazing for the fans that you take the time to record those videos, it's very precious to us to hear about this Dire Straits last tour! I hope you 'll find time to make more RUclips videos!
Finally we are able to listen to the live performance of this along with many other epic songs that were missing so badly from the original On The Night. Your drumming really shines throughout that concert, Chris
Ohhhh!! This is fabulous! It's just popped up on my feed. I truly love your playing. Your feel has always been amazing - sooo in control and funky. Good luck to you always. Top stuff.
Good on you, Chris, we loved your drumming on the OES tour (which was recently re-mixed and re-released late last year in the rest of the world, and in the US I think in January, 2024, as “On the Night” DS live with some new tunes not included in the previous 1990’s release). Tunnel of Love reappeared again, live, and your drumming was sublime, especially the middle “Check it out” breakdown. Thank you!
Definitely amazing Chris and it sounds just like the original version of the song of Dire Straits “on every street” album. I have that album at home on a CD. I’m so glad you talked me into watching this drum cover video of yours as well on your RUclips channel. Helped me understand how important you and all the other band members were for Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits back then in 1991-1992 during their final concert tour. Bummer that you and dire straits didn’t do this particular song during your live concerts in 1992 in Nîmes France, or Basel Switzerland. Odds are you’ll never be getting back with Dire Straits again as you’ve probably reached the end of your awesome musical career. My parents btw were also nice enough to be able to record that Dire Straits live “on every street” tour concert from Nîmes France late night overnight one night in 1992 on a television pay channel. That was back when we had VCR’s in our house here in my hometown of St. Louis Missouri USA and not DVD players of course like we have today. I still have that VCR tape at home from that wonderful Nîmes France concert but I don’t watch it that much anymore. I prefer to watch it here on RUclips more often. I really liked it when they had you move on down on the main or lower part of the concert stage in 1992 in Nîmes France with mark Knopfler, John Illsley, and Phil Palmer plus the others who joined in later on for the hit dire straits song “Sultans Of Swing.” Seems like you used two separate drum sets or drum kits as some call them for that France concert plus the one in Switzerland too that same year. Hope to hear back from you again on my comment here. And as far as I can say, LONG LIVE DIRE STRAITS! Jason Winter.
Hi Chris, taking the time with these videos explaining your time with dire straits and playing some of their/your songs is truly fascinating! Thank you. And also awesome playing👍

Great song and drumming Chris. OES is such an underated album which I think is one of the top three DS albums in my opinion. Such a wide range of different song types played during the OES tour, and credit to you Chris for nailing them! As well as the On the Night DVD (which had footage from two concerts) one of the best gigs of that tour is the Basel gig, go check it out on RUclips. It has one of the best live versions of Sultans and Telegraph Road you will find where all of the band were on super form! Mark's playing was awe inspiring.
But I believe "You And Your Friend" was also a pretty rare song on that tour compared to the rest of the songs. Probably on par with "When It Comes To You". Both are my favorites too, and I'm glad "You And Your Friend" made it onto the live DVD because it's a masterpiece and blows the studio version out of the water. Amazing playing as always!
love that groove with the ghost notes and it sounds like there is a slight syncopic accent on the hi hat although visually its not very noticeable. but it really adds to the feel of the groove. love it.
On Every Street is one of my favourite albums, and I have watched On The Night many times. So good to hear this great album track, and some of your experiences with Dire Straits. I imagine The Bug is a good one to play Chris?
OMG Chris, one of my favs back in the 90’s. Believe it or not I fell in love with N&C drums thanks to you in a McCartney concert in Milan around 89/90. When I read your name on the Dire Straits album “On Every Street” I thought that 1 day I wanted to meet with you. Unfortunately didn’t happen yet but still hope it happens😉
I remember going to the mall back in 1991 and getting 'On Every Street' on vinyl. 'Nevermind' by Nirvana was standing next to it on the shelves. Also, got to see the farewell tour on one of the very last dates, October 4th 1992 in Barcelona. Much love, Chris.
Chris.. This is Kere (Buchanan) here. Drummer in Sydney, where I met you many moons back. With Rex Goh? Sounding beautiful man. Hope you're well. All the best, Kere.
I can see why you like playing this song. It's a wonderfully subtle groove with amazingly complex parts that sound very simple......to us non drummers.

🙏
Chris.. This is Kere (Buchanan) here. Drummer in Sydney, where I met you many moons back. With Rex Goh? Sounding beautiful man. Hope you're well. All the best, Kere.
Hi Kere 👍🏻
