Opeth Guitar Lesson - Benighted (part one)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 6 янв 2010
- Welcome to my first guitar tutorial. This is a breakdown of the first half of one of my favourite Opeth songs, Benighted. I play through each section slowly and give some hints along the way. Start off slowly and learn the movements cleanly but keep a sense of the timing. Build up speed gradually and eventually play along with the original. Have fun.
Tabs are available (in PowerPoint format). Please message me with your email address if you would like a copy. Видеоклипы
I've been working on this song off and on for two years. When I started, I couldn't fingerpick or really play guitar well at all. Now I can play the whole thing. I'm stoked. Thanks!
Practice makes perfect!
Hey there sorry I missed your message. Thanks for watching my video and glad to hear your fingerpicking has improved.

@@eezerian So wholesome responding to a 6 year old comment.
Thank you very much for these videos!
I just have to comment on how EXCELLENT this video is as a tutorial.
You have some very effective ideas in this video for guitar tutorials, such as the semi-transparent tabs on the bottom.
The fade in's between sections of the song as to emphasize their separation is also really effective.
Plus, you seem great at regular teaching. Your hard work is very apparent in the video. Nice work.
Hey AngelofDeath, it's great that you enjoyed my lesson. Yes nylon is very nice to fingerpick. OK, more tutorials on the way. Man thanks for noticing the set up of the tabs because that took f'kin ages. Anyway, it's set up now and easy to change the numbers for the next song. Good luck with this song, it is a great one to play.
All the best
Eezer
Never even thought to look this up on youtube for some reason.
This is amazing man.
I'm learning on steel string electric so my fingers are burning like hell but it's worth it for that sound.
Props to you! 🤘
Perfectly done lesson. been learning this during quarantine
ME TOO :)
Saaame
Same here!
Great tuturial,
It's great to see a tuturial (and guitarist) that doesn't mess around treating you like a kid and actually knows their way around a guitar.
Rock on!
you are invaluable.no nonsense, straight to the point, really clear and great strong player. THANKS
All of your videos are spot on man, you're really good.
I don't usually comment on RUclips videos, but I just have to say thanks for this one. Not only do you give a great walkthrough through an awesome song, but you've also helped me develop some fingerpicking skill (which I never really got the hang of before this). Thanks a lot, and long live Opeth!
this is an amazing work! congratulations and thank you!
Love the lesson . Opeth has something so unique and rare as a whole band, absolutely cherish what they have done over the years .. opeths not just a band they are a whole ass mood
Hey man sorry to take ages. Thanks for your comment and I hope you’re getting somewhere with this amazing track. Yeah couldn’t agree more about Opeth as a stand-alone entity in its own right, untouched and pure. I feel so lucky have had then recommended to me, I’ll be forever in their debt..music just doesn’t get more classy than this.
Eezer
You, Sir, make it seem so simple! Thank you for this.
@eezerian you are very welcome, you provided me a great service. I just recently discovered opeth and must say it is beautiful. I struggled with the pick and almost gave up but now that I am fingerpicking, I have a renewed motivation.
There's a few parts where I can hear that the tabs/instructions are different from the recording, but without this lesson, there's no way I would've figured any of this out. Thanks a lot, your lessons are seriously the best.
Dude this video was so good....you made it really easy to understand ...thx
Finally a good tab! Thanks!
Excellent lesson.
Tabs are a great idea.
Wow!!! It sounded awesome...
Thnx for posting this... this is the most beautiful song i've ever heard... An Accoustic Masterpiece... 5/5

Eezer
Amazing tutorial mate this will help me learn the entire song finally 😅
Thanks Morg, such a great song. This is some sublime writing. Good to know that you're sticking with it because it can be tricky in parts. Good luck
Eezer
You show how to play but also, some tecnique; thank you very much!
very good lesson, and trust me when i say it, very good teacher!
thanx for that, keep the good work up mate!
Excellent tutorial thank you!
Thanks dude. 2 days and I got it. Ty for your work
You’re welcome Ivan. Such an amazing track to have in your repertoire. Thanks for commenting.
Eezer
The thing i love most about this video is that the "Opeth" on your t-shirt frames the guitar. At no time are Opeth out of my line of site. I love it!
Marvelously played. It seems almost effortless ;)
Genius lesson, mate.
I'm taking awhile but it's coming together slowly.
Cheers.
great lesson love opeth
I have been coming back to this for years. It's the best out there for how to play this song. Knew it by heart thanks to this guy for freshman and sophmore year, forgot about it years later and now I'm back to relearn this amazing song
Thanks for returning to my video. Great ro hear that you found it useful. More to come.
Eezer
@@eezerian Is there really though?
@@voodoochile6796 yes, there are more definitely. I know it is ages between videos and so many are getting requested. I’ve been very close with a number of different covers including Epilogue, Face in the Snow and Hours of Wealth but I’m getting bogged down with the sound quality. Gear has been upgraded and I’m getting a PRS at some point, but I will be uploading again, for sure. I know you have been a fan of my channel for years and I appreciate that very much.
All the very best
Eezer
@@eezeriancan’t wait for face in the snow!!
this is a great lesson thanks for the video
Thank you so much man. I can finally play one of my favorite song. Also, you just got a new subscriber :)
Great lesson! tabs are set up really nicely and help a lot /,,/
Gotta get myself a nylon string xD

rock on.
Thank you so much!
Thanks a lot man, you're incredible!
You're welcome seabra... thank you for watching and commenting.
Eezer
Thanks now i finally can play the song clean
Wow, thanks a lot for the video, I'm a beginner guitarist and even for me this lesson is easy enough to follow. The song is still impossible to play correctly, but I'm making progress ;) Just wanted to thank you for this and all your other videos, simply amazing!
Thank you guys .
Great thanks! Very helpful!
Wota lesson!. Great Man.
Lol! That was awesome!!!
Thank you man for uploading this video... It helped a lot. ;)
great job Eezer, you did really a very hard work, it shows high determination, I'm a beginner, i got your videos on my bookmarks, i watch them and i follow :), i just wanna say Thank you!, keep it up.
Hey nphec, thank you for watching and commenting. Awesome choice of song to get you back into playing your guitar, good luck building up your calluses and maybe you can post your version when you're done learning it. Thanks again,
Eezer
I hate that tabs online are incorrect so often, and usually I sort it out by ear, but fingerpicking is not my main speciality so this tutorial helped me so much. Still in process of learning it, but thank you for putting in the time and effort to make this video. Rock on!🤘
Hey Karlis. Thank you for watching and commenting on my first tutorial. Yeah I’m in the same boat re online tabs. I make plenty of tab mistakes in this don’t get me wrong but I like the way it sounds when I play it so that’s how it comes out in tabs. Well I’m pleased to hear that it helped your fingerpicking, to be honest fingerpicking is all about choosing the right song and here, you’ve chosen an absolute beauty. If you want to improve your picking, then this, as well as Patterns one and two will help you get there. All the very best.
Eezer
thnks for this awsm video...tabs especially...keep rocking dude
Great video man. Thanks a lot!!!
You're welcome. More to come when i get time.
Eezer
thanks dude!
Thanks !
Hey Rockedellic, thank you for checking out my first tutorial. I think I'll be posting some more in the coming weeks. Love your work too man.
Eezer
Thanks for checking my new videos, Jess. Yeah I bought the shirt at the concert in November (I'll never be the same again, it was the first time seeing Opeth live...). I hope you have a go at this song and nail it.
Eezer
@Drac0nium Hey man, you say that being wrong happens to you a lot, well this time you are absolutely correct and very well spotted. I hadn't noticed the mistake until you pointed to it. I'm making the adjustment now. Thanks so much for watching and commenting on my tutorial. And also for watching so closely that you saw something no-one else has!...more Opeth coming very soon.
regards
Eezer
rea´lly old video, but still so good. Thanks man.
Your awesome, playing opeth hurts my brain but i want to so much, not to hot on arpeggios but how ever this is a great vid and i will use it and persevere! than man !
Thanks! :D
You're an amazing player Eezer
Oh wow...it has been such a long time, I can’t thank you enough for following my videos all these years.. so nice to hear from you. I really need to make some more videos...sigh. Thanks again and I hope you are well.
Eezer
Thanks Dorf, for commenting on my videos so positively. Hopefully you can pick up some helpful hints and nail this song. I hope you do, please let me know how you are going with it. All the best.
Eezer
Thanks maxito, good luck with the touch-ups, I hope it comes together for you and you can fill in some gaps and play the whole song right through, because it just rules so much from start to finish.
Eezer
@KCWpG You're welcome. Glad that this was helpful for you. Loads more to come soon.
Eezer
Hey Eezer ;) I see you have reuploaded the video, since I had commented on your first try yesterday already ;D great job on this tutorial! Now I'll be sure to get myself a guitar and start learning till I starve!... or until I can play the song ofc :) Looking forward to your next work.
Dorf
@Gothos Thanks for watching, yeah it's probably harder than it looks to be honest, I don't think it's an easy song to play well, which seems to ring true for their music in general. I'm glad that it seemed easy, that's when I know I've put enough work into it. Cheers for commenting.
Eezer
oe tío gracias por esos cover que nos da !!! toca muy bien esa guitarra gracias, desde Colombia
@BassGeekJack Hey man thanks for commenting. Glad you liked my video, such a fantastic song, oh..and my shirt, yeh you gotta get one, doesn't matter which one, they all look great. Thanks again
Eezer
Hey man. Thanks a lot, I really liked this tutorial and finally could play this song. But you missed some bridges and parts in the verses where the notes go down and down with the voice. And how to connect to the solo part and the end of the song.
But after all, it's a really good tutorial. Thank you so much.
@ggtach thanks for checking my vids and you're right. I've been meaning to put this bit as part three of the tutorial. I'll get round to it soon. Thanks again.
Eezer
thank you veery veery very much
Cheers Kenny, good first day of the test today, two centuries. Thanks for watching my vid man.

Man this song is technical.. I can improvise pretty well on the last part though ;) Great job.
10 years later, I watched your video and it's great. Could you email me a copy of the tabs?
do more of these please :]
@DragonGooey Thank you for watching and commenting so positively on my first tutorial. It was a lot of work but well worth it, people seem to really like them. Many more to come (when I find time)...
Eezer
@tomersimhony Hey there, thanks for watching, subbing and commenting on my Opeth guitar lesson. Glad you enjoyed it. desperately trying to find time and motivation to do more.
Eezer
Thanks adam, you're right on. there is a section missing. I'll upload an amendment as soon as I can get round to it. It's only a small bit but it matters a lot.
Cheers for watching...has it been helpful?
Eezer
@oivindschoyen1 Some suggestions of easier songs (by Opeth) would be the acoustic part of 'For Absent Friends" and "Ending Credits" but for the most part Opeth's stuff is generally hard to play (well). Hope this helps you. Thanks for watching my videos and for responding.
Eezer
@CaptainPancake1 You're welcome Captain, I enjoyed putting the lessons together and I will soon have plenty of time to do more....there WILL be more. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Eezer
My guitars is comin in the mail in 5 days im ready to learn
bob bobby sounds good bob...bet you can’t wait
@norman4k You're welcome Norman, more to come. Eezer
Hello nice Tutorial,
Correct me if i am wrong (that happens a lot :P) in 8:40 part, 2nd tab, the 3 on E String should be in A string at least i play that in A string, nice right hand technique btw, keep up the good work and spread the majestic of opeth's acoustic guitar parts :D they're surely amazing!!
Best regards
@Elililo Thanks, I'd love to do a lesson on Credence but I'd have to learn it first. It's on the 'to do' list so I'll let you know if there are any developments. Thanks again.
Eezer
@shaadkhan91 Hi, thanks for watching. I'd give anything to play the acoustic parts of "The Hounds" too. If I ever work them out one day I'll definitely post a tutorial. Thanks again
Eezer
@underageguitaristavi Hey thanks man, yeah I missed a couple of chords and have been meaning to do another video to fill in some gaps, ...too lazy lately. Glad you liked it and that it made things easier to work out.
More to come,
Eezer
@neurotguitar You're welcome, I have more lessons planned for the near future. Thanks for watching my videos.
Eezer
Hey Eezerian, not sure if you still are willing to share the tabs, but if you are, I would love to have them. Great cover and lesson.
@arcanefistSC Hi, thanks for your comments, yes it can be a bit like that, calling the strings and finger numbers etc but you get used to it after a while, course the tabs help, I have them on another screen to help me as I record the video. Thanks for your generous words too man..
Eezer
please make a video of burden solo also
hey man its obvious ur are amazing at this songs (i've been watching ur vids) i just have a question, do u like also the death metal side of opeth or death metal at all? as amazing as they are with their soft and acoustic they can be pretty heavy and evil as well, well good luck and again amazing stuff ur doing here
@BigCanOfBeans Thanks for watching, 2 weeks only, you're doing well...really well. I can't think of a better song to learn for your first one. Good luck with the rest of it. I just recently posted a tutorial on "Face of Melinda" if you get inspired further. Great job...
Eezer
You're welcome and thanks for watching. Keep trying with this song, it is tricky but if you play it slowly (painfully slowly) then you can eventually pick up speed and play along. Ignore mistakes and keep going and you'll be fine. Good luck and thanks again. BTW, just uploaded a new one.
Eezer
@theevilnerd666 I don't know whether it is the one they use, it's just my interpretation of the song using a variety of tabs and what I can hear. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Eezer
@xurxo12 Thank you for watching and commenting. There will be more during the holidays when I get more time to myself.
Eezer
can you do feathers fell by dissection?
and/or to bid you farewell?
@ukfemaleguitarist Hi, just uploaded 2 more opeth lessons, when you get a moment, thanks again for watching my stuff Dee.
Eezer
Thank you for wathing my vidoes BmArthas. It is a beautiful song.
Eezer
There's a part missing at the vocal section dissected at 5:13. The riff is repeated and there's a "tail" at the end the 4th time, exactly when he says "from our weak and crumbling lives"/"In what's vanished from your eyes". That being said, your tutorial is way more accurate than my tabs! thanks a lot!
Alfie Solomon yeah thanks Alfie. It was just one of those things where I thought I had covered everything. Nice spot and I’m glad that you got something out of it...cheers for commenting and thank you for watching.
Eezer
@@eezerian You are most welcome. thanks to you i finally managed to play this whole first , and i plan to learn the other ones you posted. Your playing is pristine! instant Sub!
@MochizMuM lol, just goes to show every note is a gem no matter what. Keep going with it. Did you get an email yet?? If so let me know and I'll send you the tabs.
Cheers
Eezer
@maxhardattack Hey max, I don't know if it's correct or not. It's as accurate as I can hear it. If you've found tabs that include some more open strings and it sounds better then go for it. Great song choice btw and good luck with it. Thanks for watching my tutorials.

You are so awesome, could you please make a hopes leaves lesso n

I can't seem to find a way to contact you via RUclips but I'd really like to get the TAB. Where can I send my email for the TAB? Thanks so much for making the video! It's awesome :)
