It’s going to be beautiful. So excited for you and your garden. In January I got Covid and my sister weeded my garden ended up pulling out a lot of my plants so I am going to be planting some native plants again
Skullcap, I had it alllllll over the yard. I didn’t even buy it it came in another container. It is very pretty. Hard to contain but very pretty in bloom.
This year i decided to stick to container gardening and increase my native plants ( I was contemplating adding some small beds). I'm going to expand my front and side yard natives, then work in some areas in the backyard (where my containers are). You gave me some ideas for plants to use in some areas in the front. But native nurseries here in South Florida are not easy to find, but I will keep on searching. Thanks for your videos!!
Gaillardia was found to be introduced, right? Not that it matters much, it’s not an aggressive spreader anyhow, just worth mentioning when discussing natives.
Love all the plants, you can never have too many plants right, ha, was wondering if you are going to Localtopia tomorrow in St.Pete, its from 10am to 5pm I think, I live in Pasco and have a small backyard garden, lots of vendors and food trucks, I am sure the parking will be insane, but that's ok looking forward to it :)
I wish… I’m working from 5am to 6pm 😛 So no localtopia for me. One day I’ll have a job that doesn’t take up 60 to 70 hours. But it sounds super fun! I hope you have lots of fun 😄
@@WildFloridian oh that stinks, they always have other events you and your family can go to when you have time off, hope you get to garden a little this weekend 💕🌱🌱
I just put a few plugs into my yard in bare spots. Frog fruit in a drier spot and sunshine mimosa in a wetter spot. My goal right now is to just figure out which ground cover in my yard does well. I don’t mind so much the turf grass but want plants that do a little more for the ecosystem. So I stopped irrigation, spraying herbicide, and fertilizing my yard. What I do is mow bags of leaves into the yard a few times a year. So far my yard has improved a bunch. I switch from St. Augustine grass to Bahia.
I buy most of my native wildflowers from Wilcox in Largo. But I also have got plants from Little Red Wagon in Tampa. I also hear really good things about Sweet Bay down in Parrish but it is a bit of track for me. Hope this helps you start your wildflower garden! 🥰
Depends on the type of native plant. Some are made for swamps and some for beaches. I would look for ones that like a typical Myakka soil (sounds like that is what you have) and many of these will do well (the ones in the video). I add mulch where I'm trying to keep the weeds down.
I have rich, dark soil. My sister has white sandy soil. I can grow stuff she can’t. She can grow stuff I can’t. There’s an amazing number of FL natives the 😍 sandy soil. Dune sun flower being only one of them - and it’s a beauty! Fire bush grows wild in he yard. As does partridge pea, and many others.
Question… we are restoring an old abandoned apiary in Putnam County. I was gifted some seeds for Borage. What are your thoughts about this plant? We were told it was a great plant for bees. I don’t want a run away plant that takes over everything like the vines we battle. Thank you in advance from The Honey Stand. :). Love your videos!!
Hi there! I have never grown borage. If I was in your position I would test it in an area and see what it does. There are lots of plants that are native to Florida that are great for bees. My neighbor was gushing about seaside goldenrod the other day. 😄 Hope that helps and best wishes!
Once the frost is past or water them right before to help raise ground temp or throw some blankets on top. I actually planted these right before it went into the 30s. They got a good watering the next morning to warm up the roots.
I'm just a little north of you and I've been adding through out the winter. As long as you are buying from an outside nursery. Not from a greenhouse nursery.
good weekend !
Yes! Thank you jean-loup ☺️

Thanks for so much inspiration. Making a butterfly/native flower garden.
Thank you ☺️

Thank you @Elderberry Jamz for bringing this up! ☺️

Frogfruit and sunshine mimosa can be good turf grass substitutes as well. I’m adding both to my front lawn turf ☺️ hoping they compete well.
I love it! I want to swap out my grass with Frog fruit. I also saw a twin flower yard.

So where in Florida are you located? I heard you say zone 9b/10a in one of your videos. I'm in Indialantic in the same zone as you.
I’m in 10a Pinellas County 😁
Where do you buy your native wildflowers? Anywhere near Tampa? I absolutely love this idea.

My yard is all sand, do I still have add soil or mulch to it if I want to grow native wildflowers? Or will they still grows since they are native?
Easier to plant seeds but most of them will do fine if you plant now and water in well.

Cool video!! You definitely need to research Promo-SM!!!
What is that?

Love what you do! I am in Spring Hill, Hernando County. Is it too soon to plant these wildflowers? We have been getting a lot of frost lately.

Do you have an email address. I would like to send a photo of an area I would want to do something with for the butterflies
