    I live in south Mississippi and my microclimate has gotten so bad with ground solar radiation over the past 5 years that we can no longer grow anything in full sun. We have had to move into our forest. We are growing in filtered sunlight and YES it's working! Our gardens were burning up by June 1 so there was no summer crop at all. We have always used a good amount of mulch from ground leaves and old hay but even that didn't work in full sun. I noticed just today that even our plants that are in more sun than others in the food forest are already burning up. We grow now in dappled sunlight during the summer. We have found that every microclimate needs to adapt to what can best be done.

    Thats what ive been doing lately, following what the big box stores has been putting out. They put out sweet potatoes i buy and start sweet potatoes they put out onions and garlic well im starting those too. And i full on believe that every one starting a garden should totally buy starts. Then you physically see it every day. Theres no guessing game to it. Ive done that before. I Planted pepper seeds in my first raised beds and had what i thought was 1 come up. I babied that little plant, turned out to be a weed 😂

    Victory gardens were promoted in World War I and II, in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Germany. Increasing the food supply was important but so was the positive effect it had on civilian morale. It certainly improves my morale to know that I'll eat every day, regardless of the money situation and so will my neighbors.

    Whew...an excellent video!!! Something else we've added to our 9A-B Victory garden (besides vegetables) are tropicals: Chayote, chaya, cassava, jicama, longevity spinach, jamaican cherry, Roselles and Spanish Hog plum. They are super interesting to learn about and often have a history of feeding huge populations in other countries. We're not experts on them yet, but we are enjoying the challenge of growing them.

    I’m trying with a very small garden this year, but I have such a black thumb. Just went out today to water and apply some fungicide and noticed that one of my pepper plants was snapped in half at the base. I don’t know if it was wind, rain, wild critters, or one of my own pups that did it. In previous years, even if I did get a few veg, the squirrels and birds wrecked them.

    Hi, I'm in Lakeland which is zone 9b. I will be planting a firebush and am curious how your plants survived the cold temps. of this winter specifically the firebush. Here in Lakeland we had one night that went down to 28 degrees. I think, if I remember correctly St. Pete was warmer that night. Just wanting to know what to expect. Thanks so much for what you do.

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  2 года назад +1

      Usually St. Pete is warmer than Lakeland in the winter. The firebush looked sad when it was in the 30s. Now that it is warming up, it is dropping all the sad leaves and put on tons of fresh growth. My yard has a pretty good microclimate even within my neighborhood. Frost all over people's grass and not a bit on mine. BUT Firebush can take a good beating of cold and grow back from a stick. It just needs to be established. So if you are planting it now, it will be in good condition if we get a cold front this coming winter.

    What are your thoughts on using Preen weed prevention for flower beds? We have been removing massive amounts of wends that are taking over our flower bed. I’ve heard of preen and purchased it in hope to reduce the weed take over. I’d like to plant flowers and other plants to attract butterflies and bees. Would preen be bad for them?

    • @WildFloridian
      @WildFloridian  2 года назад +2

      The general sentiment is that herbicides can be problematic for the caterpillars and bee larvae. I don't know Preen specifically. I would say use mulch or do a solarization before using an herbicide. And then if you have a really tough weed... then spot treat. I hope that helps and wish you the best in you butterfly gardening!

    Ah yes, the original weapons factory. You just compost the whole garden with water, for a couple weeks, with some nitrogen fixing legumes.. then, with the liquid, you fractionally distill nitric and sulfuric acid, by heating the liquid to the boiling point of those compounds.
    Then, combine with charcoal, by burning the leftover dried plant material, or by powderizing the leftover plant material, it can be combined with nitric acid, for smokeless powder...
