That's the thing, this clickbait channel tries to get you to click by saying dumb things like "katana SUCKS, we made it BETTER!" when in reality the katana wasnt supposed to be used like a longsword where youd get into these grapple binds with a huge cross guard. If that's what you find yourself doing when katana sparring then you're doing it wrong. Obviously the Japanese didn't feel the need to have a larger guard otherwise they would have made them larger easily. And we do find examples with larger guards occasionally.

His dual wielding gimmick is just that, a gimmick; when talking about real.combat he preferred things that were more reliable and gave the user the most options, including grappling.
@@leonardomarquesbellini That's literally the opposite of what Musashi says in his book. He emphasized learning to wield a sword in one hand from the start of your training. He says he doesn't like two-handing a sword, because it limits your movements and restricts your hands. He actually says that it's not speed, but rhythm that wins a duel; striking too fast makes your blows sloppy and too much power puts you off balance. As far as calling dual wielding a gimmick, rapier/dagger duelists would disagree. Regardless, the way Musashi views it, he effectively said that because the swordsmen of his country wore two swords, it's better to use both to survive, than to die with one of them dangling uselessly at your side. There's a whole lot more evidence for Musashi's dueling style being one-handed, but I'm not writing an essay here. If you take the time to read Musashi's words, there's no way you could mistake that his dueling style was anything other than one-handed. He probably didn't dual-wield in all situations, but I'm very certain he preferred one-handed, because he said so himself and I'll take his word over yours.

I bet it offers an extra attack each round, just like that.
A Western crossguard may be advantageous, and a pommel may improve balance, but a threaded rat-tail is the WORST possible way to hold anything together that will ever be subjected to impact and vibration.
Maybe a faltana would be a good name? As for new ideas and cursed combinations, really the only oddity that I'd want to see tested would be where do you draw the line between a sword with a really long handle, and a spear?
Personally I think it would have been better to just made a tsuba with a crossguard. Inspired by a crossguard with dual side rings. I'm picturing a larger more protective version of the Musashi style tsuba with quillons. That way it wouldn't be moving as far away from its traditional Japanese design. But rather, keeping the overall Japanese design and feel, but bringing in the idea of more hand protection.
@@dhampirdp3489 Yeah... But that was an abomination of terrible design. It was basically a tsuba with a god awful and pitifully small crossguard above it. Also, it was ugly as hell and blatantly just a tsuba and a crossguard that were never intended to go together, slapped together on a single sword.. What I'm picturing could be made from a single piece of 5-8mm sheet steel. By either cutting it out by hand, milling it or laser cutting it out. Some filing work to round over the edges. Then assemble the sword.
I had a similar thought. Maybe a long tsuba, not full crossguard size but bigger so that it can actually protect the hand kinda like a flat, oblong cup hilt lol
@@benjaminotalora363 historical Katana and Tachi did have larger tsuba. The smaller type we commonly see these days comes from the standardisation of Katana during peace times.
Would be cool to see same thing but with katana hand wrap instead of simple thin cord. Probably would have been able to improve balance by starting with oversized pommel and grind it off, checking balance till you get it right. That or could do a sectioned pommel where one could add spacer weights to tune balance slightly forward or back. Loved the format, excellent episode! Tachimitar maybe? Only need to drop the s from scimitar and h jump one place forward to interlock both. Tashadtar to bring channel into it!
I think my favorite thing about this video, is the concept that, in between filming Shad likes to stand in his backyard... alone... stare at pool noodles... and occasionally practice slapping techniques.

A Katona isn't a messer because it doesn't have a full tang, It's not a falchion because it doesn't have a peended pommel. The difference between a falchion, and messer is how the grip is attached. You made a falchion because of how you attached your grip.
The only thing I would say is, in future rehiltings, try grinding down and threading the tang itself, rather then welding on the thread of another sword. Just thinking of long term durability, other then that, this is a beautiful piece and one I would love to own.
Basically a heron marked sword. The bevel of a katana would be the best design on a sword that never loses its edge and is almost indestructible, and the European guard design would be the ideal hand protection. Though I think a complex guard more akin to a swiss saber would better pair with a long o-katana like blade for a fantasy sword like the heron marked blade.
Here’s an idea that I find interesting and would really love to see: “fix” the longsword next by thinking in mostly the opposite terms and making the longsword fit the usage of a katana. Dull it on one side to allow for easy noto (sheathing), give it a hard wooden scabbard, remove the bulky cross guard that only gets in the way and instead add a smaller disc that’s enough to keep your hands from sliding onto the blade and allow for breaking habaki during unsheathing. And so on and so forth, you get the idea. If there’s time you could even go one step further and try to get the longsword to also fulfill the other important role of the katana as a spiritual item, “the soul of the samurai”, by imagining what “the soul of the knight” could look like and what that would mean for a longsword beyond “just” adding some christian imagery. I think the results would be really interesting! :)
I love these rehilting videos. I would like to see you guys get more creative with designs like this (curved crossguard, made from scratch handle as opposed to repurposing the tsuka, maybe find a way to use loveless bolts as fasteners). I would LOVE to see you give this treatment to a moroha-zukuri (double edged tip) katana blade.

It's probably challenging to make, but I want to see something like a spear with a cutting part added near the tip. Similar to a swordstaff, but much more focused on the spear design, while still having the ability to cut decently so your only attack isn't a stab.

You know, Red Dragon make a steel version of that pommel form the synthetic training swords that was used as a replacement on the original katana conversion.
Call it a Falshimatatachi, Falchion Simatar Tachi.
Great content. Always love seeing you build and test weapons and equipment.
If tyrinth wants a different name for it how about Falchana with the ch pronounced the same way as it is in Falchion?
I like this. I was thinking "Faltana," but yours might be a little cooler.
How bout falc'hata?
@@dustinbrandel59 Sounds too much like falcata imo... unless that was intentional.
crafter's pride, and then Shad just cuts that noodle like a chef cutting a cucumber to pieces, cackling crazily... what a sight. :)
a possible name could be hayabusachi, because falchion = falcon... at least it sounds like it. also this sword seems to be fast. I bet it offers an extra attack each round, just like that.
Seeing Tyranth use a Dremel makes me feel like less of a layman 😄
A Western crossguard may be advantageous, and a pommel may improve balance, but a threaded rat-tail is the WORST possible way to hold anything together that will ever be subjected to impact and vibration.
Maybe a faltana would be a good name? As for new ideas and cursed combinations, really the only oddity that I'd want to see tested would be where do you draw the line between a sword with a really long handle, and a spear?
Something like a Naginata?
I love ALL Shadiversity videos!!!! ❤
Windlass heron marked blade had something like that
@@dhampirdp3489 Yeah...
@@RainMakeR_Workshop ohh really? Guess I'll have to make some research. I've only seen display pictures where its not easy to look at the details
O-Falchiana for the name.
Madmen all of you!
Calling it now, the longsword with katana hilt is gonna be like a two handed Jian. A "Chu Jian", I believe they call it. 😂
Katilij. Spirit of the Katana and Kilij. ... or go all Japanese, maybe "Tsurugi no Tamashii" (剣の魂), which translates to "Soul of the Sword" or "Spirit of the Blade." This name captures the essence of the katana while alluding to its fusion with the crossguard or "bodyment of the cross,"
Here's an idea for another freaky hybrid weapon! How about a sort of "two-headed long-mace"? Essentially taking something like a bo staff, and putting mace heads on both ends?
How to make a messer:
Step 1 Buy a katana
Step 2 Give said katana a longsword handle and cross guard
Step 3 Enjoy your "home made" messer
Edit: i stand by my messer comment Even If they say its a falchion or a scimitar
That’s pretty ‘messed’ up my guy
I agree pal, that def is a kriegsmesser with a more curved blade. I don't see why so much babble.
@@GerdLPluu What you mean is Carcinisation (the one about the crabs). So, it'd be more like *Falchionisation* I think (that is, if we consider that the blade itself has made the change to adapt to its user/environment) xd.
@@ccelik97but didn't Anthony Kiedis sing a song about Falchiornication? And then there was the TV show about it starring the guy from X-Files?
@@blackjacktrial Meh.
I like your enthusiasm for work, I have a lot of ideas, but execution is my Achilles heel.
Yessssss
@TYRANTH_ It's an Aumetachi!
Cause it's was made by Australians, and it's a Messer tachi
Shad being in the middle of casually slapping the sausage when Tyranth arrives LMAO.. this is the sort of stuff that makes this channel so wholesome
Cackatana.
You're welcome.
I find it hard to believe that a thousand years of Japanese sword smiths did not come up with a adequate cross guard.
I really love your work, Tyranth :)
I have been waiting for this for a little bit. I’m pretty excited.
Messy-Tana!
Gross Messer-katana.
Great build, and God bless!
Health and longevity's cultivation's blessings to you and all shadeversity bros and your familys🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🙏🙌🏽🙏🙌🏽🙏 . Great content as always 😂🤘🏽and hope you all are able to work together well and good like this onwards as well.🙌🏽🙏🤘🏽🔥👏🏽🙌🏽
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉. The katana looks great👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾. Just thought that the handle seemed less in its length or maybe it is my my mind in confusion 😅.
- mad guy out
A Katona isn't a messer because it doesn't have a full tang, It's not a falchion because it doesn't have a peended pommel.
The difference between a falchion, and messer is how the grip is attached.
You made a falchion because of how you attached your grip.
Beautiful
two handed Oschim Sword
We've had Bastard Swords.
Now meet: The Whoreson
The only thing I would say is, in future rehiltings, try grinding down and threading the tang itself, rather then welding on the thread of another sword. Just thinking of long term durability, other then that, this is a beautiful piece and one I would love to own.
I would just call it Bob
Basically a heron marked sword. The bevel of a katana would be the best design on a sword that never loses its edge and is almost indestructible, and the European guard design would be the ideal hand protection. Though I think a complex guard more akin to a swiss saber would better pair with a long o-katana like blade for a fantasy sword like the heron marked blade.
I think it looks like a Talwar honestly, just with a longer handle.
Im going to rehilt a Coldsteel Kreigsmesser soon so im loving this video iv been waiting for it for a while the original Scimitana video is why i subscribed now im waiting for the full review video and the rehilting of the Longsword with Katana fittings as inspiration for my own rehilting
Every notification iv gotten from shadiversity and even RUclips in general iv gotten all excited hoping it was the full review of this Scimitachi
I would love to see genuine kendo Japanese master reaction and review on both of those swords.
me too aryan homophobe!
It's probably challenging to make, but I want to see something like a spear with a cutting part added near the tip. Similar to a swordstaff, but much more focused on the spear design, while still having the ability to cut decently so your only attack isn't a stab.
ok now turn a katana into a rapier
An arming sword with Japanese fittings would look a little bit like a Gladius.
Man at Arms: Reforged audition tape comming along nicely
05:06 - Well, everybody should know by now that's what adults do with their time.. Slapping pool noodles like that is actually.. a growing trend now 🤤
