A few weeks ago I flew out of MCI (Kansas City) and I was shocked to see a Boeing 747, DC-10, and L-1101 all parked next to each other off to the side. To my knowledge, these planes rarely flew out of Kansas City International to begin with. It was like a 1980s time machine.
I worked on that very aircraft while at Lockheed! At about 0:19 if you look at the underside of the wing just outboard of the main landing gear you will see a long "stiffener" that the Lockheed engineers decided that was needed. This was only installed on the first 8 or 10 aircraft if I remember right, the wings after that had the additional stiffener added at the Avco factory. It was kind of funny. My crew worked overtime installing these while the rest of the plant had gone from about 6000 down to less that 500. The amount of man-hours they figured it would take was around 50,000 per aircraft. We got it down to about 40,000 and our supervisor told us to slow down otherwise we would be laid off. So yeah a lot of sleeping was done in the wing tanks. Part of that interior being configured that way was from its last years as a Flying Hospital.
Thx for this comment. I try to improve my english and i'm a trijets enthousiast, i remember saw them when i was a child🫠 I always dream to fly one of these beautys❤❤ Trijets have something kind of magic or powerfull and savage... maybe like the TGV PSE with his unique train engine profil and 80's color^^ When i was a child Concorde, DC10 and other trijets make me dream...❤ Sad to never fly one of them... but glad to fly onboard A300 and the fisrt A330 commercial plane with Air Inter, beautyfull bird for a short flight to Calvi😎 Your comment is very interesting, not loke mine😂
This video is an aviation history gem: It's the only video out there that shows the futuristic powered doors on the L1011 in operation with their awesome badass sound when they lock into place. Please make another video with just a complete opening and closing cycle of one of the doors. For millions of people this sound always marked the beginning of a wonderful journey aboard the L1011 and it will be lost forever once the last L1011 leaves service.
I have to admit that I loved the way Lockheed Martin made their Tristar engine a part of the airplane tail rather than mounted on top of the plane like McDonald Douglas did. The L1011 had more style. I'm sure the engines of today are powerful that you don't need a third, but the tri-engine on planes did look very cool.
Every time I see a video about the Tristar it reminds me more of how blessed I am to have been a flight engineer on the Tristar in the 90's. It was the first airliner I rode on as a child and was lucky to have been a flight crew member before it was close to it's retirement. I still miss her.
I was just happy to have flown on them as a passenger several times. I would get that tingly feeling when I saw my next flight had an L1011 at the gate. Yeah it was a great day indeed! Don't feel that way any more these days, unless it's a 747
Gulf Air used to operate Tristar L-1011 and I had the chance to travel in of them! Huge plane and wide body, but the hand luggage compartments wabble during takeoff.
That widebody is SO much better. Looks more like a movie theater room than an airplane, unlike the others where you feel like your inside a tube of Pillsbury crescent rolls.
Amazing!! Simply Amazing!! It is a true revelation of things that would ordinarily not be seen. My goodness, I love it. I wish the Cameraman would have taken a step back and videoed the entire plane from a distance (so that we can all identify it) before panning in close. I loved the view of the lower crew rest section. It is very rare to see such. Kudos.
Such a gem of a plane wish i could fly in one it is sad to see the tribute plane like this in my country just out in the open and rottening not even a hanger over it 😢
I remember seeing these at London Heathrow, Zürich and other larger airports while changing flights from Helsinki traveling to Malaga. I newer got to fly on a Tri Star, my father flew to New York a few time on these and liked them a lot! The only tri jet experiences I got is from traveling on Finnair's MD-11's and one trip from Helsinki to Malaga I got to sit in the cockpit. My old neighbor was a DC10 & MD11 pilot for Finnair and he took me with him to the simulators a few times, I have landed the DC10 at Kai Tak and the MD11 at several airports. That was an unforgettable memory that I will always cherish!
This applies to cars, planes and all other types of vehicles, but it’s so fascinating to see how what was once a part of everyday life is now a piece of history that younger generations look on in awe at.
I just see the lots of overtime, and engine changes every night, went to Atlanta to change two engines, flew on it back to Mia,on take off for next flight ,one of new engines blew.
I've never flown in this aircraft at all in my lifetime...Air Canada was the only Canadian airline that had this in their fleet! (Then-rival airline CP Air had a similar trijet, the McDonnell Douglas DC-10!)
I flew in one of these Tristan planes, from Santiago-Chile Miami an Aeroperu then Orlando-Florida to New York, Easter Airlines the first plane spotless the second airline terrible, we were lucky that it didn’t crash.
I hope that this specific airframe may be useful for building a replica for Microsoft Flightsim 2020. So far there are only the other trijets like the DC-10 and MD-11 in development. One can only hope!
That is actually not the case. The L-1011 was ahead of its time. In that nice Aircraft new technology was introduced which was in that times only known in military aircraft. As well computerized flying was well improved with the L-1011. It was one of its kind which allows real autoland capabilities, enabled by two auto land computers.
@@kampfpanzerleopard346 Not Correct - this bird as since been stored and parted out, it is not airworthy anymore. The only airworthy and flying L-1011 is N140SC Stargazer operated by Orbital ATK. That is the last flying L-1011
@@kampfpanzerleopard346 It is one of mine as well - thankful that Orbital ATK is still flying the final one! Would definitely be cool to see one restored or be able to do high-speed taxi runs for aviation days

Also a BAc111
I honestly didn't think there were any L-1011's left!

The L1011 always felt the engineers had to have been pilots and artists. Unlike the DC10 which felt like the evil sister that no one liked.
What a giant, beautiful, high tech bird. Its a shame none are still in service. They were built like tanks. Loved the tour.
There is one, Stargazer.

I'm surprised modern cabin designers haven't taken a less from the luxurious Tristar seating arrangement.

The Tristan was always my fav airline (closely followed by the 747’s). So this vid is simply awesome. Especially seeing the lower lounge 🤗

beautiful vault & wide cabin
This is a former Worldways Canada L1011, and I worked on this aircraft many years ago as a Flight Attendant!
So did I, was wondering about the lower lounge, not many made but Worldways had 2 of them.
Just such a wonderfull plane

Omg 😱 😍 … is this somebody’s personal L-10-11 or something? Wow 🤩
Pues será el de la Northrop grumma supongo
Looks like it was converted to a mobile medical facility and operating room... maybe for some Non Profit organization is my guess on this one
I THINK THAT ORIGINALLY WAS ONE OF THE SHIPS WE BUILT FOR P.S.A. IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY WE BUILT 3
Yes it’s in the video description
You built Tristars? 😍
Greetings from Italy Micheal! I had so magic moments aboard TWA Tristars on 1992. I was 18, my first trip in USA with my family.
When I'd travel with my Granny in the lower lounge car everybody would just smoke and drink one after the other!

Fantastic ! Do you have a video with a closer look at the cockpit instruments ???

Looks cozy
Looking very nice.
Still looking very nice...
Ones from Delta looked more nicer after they remodeled the inside of their L1011 aircraft in 1994.
Thanks. Yes, those old L-1011s looked really nice when our airlines use to have them in the different fleets.
Been a while since I heard the music of an RB211, do these still fire up ???
I wish i had had a ride on the l1011 please.
Originally with PSA airlines then worldways of Canada only 2 build with the downstairs lounge extra protection in nose landing area
They should paint a PSA smile on the old bird. Just because.
Reminds me of Passenger 57 (1992)
New to me. What was this used for? And, is the PSA mentioned, the California PSA airlines? It almost looks like it could be a hospital ship.
PSA owned it first, it later became a flying hospital, then it was stored in Tucson for YEARS. I used to see it every time I went out of the airport.
What an amazing post, you sir are a steely eyed missile man, hot damn!
PSA only had one L1011. It was called Mother Grinning Bird.
They ordered 3 but only had one delivered.
Wow a plane that you had to fly and not let the computers do all of the work..
Not really, was the Most Technological Aircraft in it's day. You can basically let the Plane, Take Off, Fly, and Land by itself.
I’m confused. Where is this plane and are those engines firing?
Where did the Bae 1-11 come from?!
What's the story on this one?
Of all the Tristars to be preserved, this is probably the best example, with the peculiar underbelly lounge.
nice!
Is it airworthy and can fly?
Yes, far as I know it's the only L1011 left that is airworthy.

flying hospital?
Lockheed Martin should create a supersonic plane that will leapfrog boeing and airbus.
Why do people use these silly cameras trying to fit everything in but instead distort the plane so you can't appreciate the actual look of the plane??
If you can't do a little.. just a little narration, then don't bother.
Harsh. The video speaks for itself.
Don't bother find something else your good at maybe.
@@morthren yea lighten up Tom .... its a Tri Star.
Why didn’t you go film this and narrate it yourself?
