  • Rare footage from an Eastern Airlines Flight Engineer, recorded on a VHS tape in 1986. Shows an Eastern Airlines L-1011 TriStar, registration N317EA, on the ground in New York City. The full tour includes exterior shots, a cabin walkthrough, the galley on the lower deck, and cockpit shots.
    Exterior tour begins: 0:11
    Cabin tour begins: 3:16
    Galley tour begins: 7:11
    More of cabin: 8:53
    Cockpit tour begins: 9:28
The plane, N317EA, was delivered to Eastern Airlines in 1973. After the unfortunate closure of Eastern, it was delivered to Air Algerie for a few months, and then American Trans Air. In 1991, the plane was delivered to Delta Airlines under the registration N784DA, and was broken up in 2003 at Marana Boneyard. More information, as well as photos, are available online.
The Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, is an American medium-to-long-range, wide-body trijet airliner by Lockheed Corporation. It was the third wide-body airliner to enter commercial operations, after the Boeing 747 and the McDonnell Douglas DC-10. The airliner has a seating capacity of up to 400 passengers and a range of over 4,000 nautical miles (7,410 km). Its trijet configuration has three Rolls-Royce RB211 engines with one engine under each wing, along with a third center-mounted engine. The aircraft has an autoland capability, an automated descent control system, and available lower deck galley and lounge facilities. The aircraft also has a dedicated smoking section, 7 lavatories, giant movie screens, large ceilings, and multiple elevators that take crew to the lower deck galleys.

It was far more advanced when it was introduced than any airliner of its day. There was never a L1011 that crashed because of design issue. All of the crashes, which there were not many over its 40+ year career were results of human error or weather. You may want to educate yourself a bit on the topic.

This is very precious footage! The cabin looks soooo much bigger and more spacious without the overhead storage bins in the center. I suppose part of the reason for that is that in those days there was only one large pull-down movie screen for each section of the cabin and I suppose inner cabin storage bins would have blocked the view and indeed the film projection. But I am surprised about how worn and dirty things appear to be especially in the galley. I do love all of the analog equipment in the cock-pit. And for people who may not remember... smoking and congregating was allowed on these flights. And although I was never a smoker I would usually go to the back of the cabin and hang out with the smokers as they were typically congregating and talking it up. A ten hour flight goes so much quicker in friendly group conversation!

The L-1011 was easily the best built wide body jetliner back-in-the-day. Air Canada always had the tendency to buy and fly the best, including the Tristar instead of the DC-10. Flew on its L-10’s on a number of occasions.

Thank you SO much for posting this! It was 1986 or 87 when I first set foot on an L1011 -- I would have been 7 or 8. It was this configuration (meaning 5 center seats and no overhead bins above the center seats) which made this plane look MASSIVE -- even after just getting off of a DC-10. As a child who knew nothing, this became my favorite aircraft and I always wanted to fly on one again. I only flew on the L1011 twice but I loved it. A big, warm, spacious, thoughtful, comfortable aircraft. I do miss them so it was nice to see a video of one still humming away in service (even it it was 34 years ago).

Delta had a fleet of them. I flew on one from Los Angles to Atlanta. I really miss them & wish they were still made. Incredibly comfortable & great ride. They would probably double the amount of seats in them now. They also served meals in those days, not just snacks. I was on the free champagne flight.

What an awesome video! Brings back so many wonderful memories of flying with Eastern. I was a CTC travel agent at the time and had been trained on the Eastern Airlines SODA reservation system. We were able to print boarding passes right in our office, remember stapling them to the back of each respective flight coupon. Flew the L-1011 many times, especially to training in Miami. Oh what wonderful days those were. The L-1011 was so spacious and you really felt special being a passenger aboard one. The interior was so roomy. I will never forget the droning sound of those RR engines. So unique to the L-1011. Eastern was a top notch airline in its time. My first flight was aboard an Eastern Airlines DC-9-14 from STL to my hometown of EVV in August of 1968. We were so fortunate to have Eastern serve our city for so many years. It was so sad when they went out of business. I can't count how many Walt Disney World tour packages I sold for them. Really enjoyed the non-revenue passes, back in the day when it was relatively easy to fly standby with so many flights offered each day. I am so thankful to have experienced these glory days. Thank you for sharing this gem of a video. It is just like reliving a dream. Thanks again. P.S. Loved Canadian Sunset being played over the intercom system. I had to add this note as I used to travel a lot on Delta and did many day trips, that is fly in to my job location in the morning and fly back home in the early evening. Delta used L 10's heavily on the Atlanta to Tampa route and of course also returns. I can remember getting on nearly empty L10's at Tampa to fly back to Atlanta. You could just sit wherever you liked. They were full going down to Tampa however. I also thought it was neat how the had 5 restrooms spanned across the rear of the plane. They had a very good safety record, the most notable loss was Eastern Flight 401, the one that went down in the everglades in Dec. 1971. It was due to pilot confusion and is well detailed in the book " The Ghost of Flight 401". Interesting reading from the surviving crew members.

As a flight attendant with Delta for 32 years, ive got fond memories of our L1011 fleet, one of my favorite aircraft to work on, my very first transatlantic flight i ever worked was on an L1011 from JFK-AMS. You've really brought back great great memories, thank you so much for this historical video of aviation.

We are lucky to have this historical footage! 11:16 if one of those bulbs had not failed in 1972 we would not have lost 101 souls and a beautiful aircraft. RIP.

One of the best flights I ever took was on a L1011 from DFW to ATL. Maybe 1978-79.

Thank you Baxter Cat for posting this, I flew for EAL as an F/A from 1976 to 1989 and the L-1011 was my favorite A/C out of the whole fleet to work on the galley R-2 position other than L-1 senior position were the best, this brings back some very good memories and of course nightmares as well.😎

Wow!!! Thank you so much for this posting. I remember L1011s. I flew on TWA with many flights and a few on their L1011s...I had friends that worked for Easter Airlines back in 70s and 80s.

Hi. Did any of your friends ever tell you about any of the stories that were floating around in the mid 1970s about some of the L1011 planes Eastern flew that were supposedly haunted? I came across it before and was always curious if any one who worked for Eastern ever knew anything about it.

@@sharksman20rocks Theres a lot on social media from people who knew people, or had relatives, that worked for Eastern. When you have that many people saying there was truth behind it, you can't dismiss it as nonsense. These thing do happen, more often than most of us realise, Did you have a personal experience or come across someone who did?
